SIPs Get DELIVERED - We Are Down To The FINAL STEPS Before We Are Ready to SHEATHE Our Barndominium
In this video, Greg has a great crew of family helping with the final steps before sheathing is ready to go up. We are definitely getting closer and this barndominium (barnhouse) is going to look very different from here on out. I think I am going to miss looking at all of the timbers from the outside-thankfully, we can still see a lot of them on the inside of the barnhouse.
We are building our barndominium - barn house out of wood that we are milling on our own sawmill. If you haven't followed along with our BARN Build, (which is now our barn house build) make sure to check out that series in our playlists. We finished the first slab last summer, we milled most of the timbers needed over this past winter/spring, added plumbing, put in a second slab for our garage and now we have started building our barndominium - barnhouse - lodge - our home, with 8 bents going up being the latest excitement! Now, we are working on securing the bents and adding to the structure.
Here's the video where all 8 bents are put up in one day- it was pretty amazing:

Here's the video where we share our change in plans and decide to turn our barn into our home:

Here is the video where we share our barn plans. Our plans are from ‪‪‪‪‪‪‪‪‪‪‪‪‪‪‪‪‪‪‪‪‪‪‪@BarnGeek . We are excited to build one of his beautiful barns and turn it into our home:
th-cam.com/video/Ib5SVWHgx7M/w-d-xo.html
***We are also so excited to have completed our sawmill cover enclosure (sawmill shed). Definitely check out our Sawmill Playlist to watch it all happen. We have shared the process of building our sawmill cover from the very beginning. We have a Woodland Mills HM130 Max sawmill and we live in North Idaho. The sawmill cover / sawmill shed is vital to continue milling for our barn build in the winter months, but it will also be a great way to keep out of the sun during the summer months, and of course all of the rain, in between!
Here is a link to the video that shares the sawmill cover / sawmill shed build from start to finish:
th-cam.com/video/Q_VBQI_eN04/w-d-xo.html
Here are the specs on the sawmill cover / sawmill shed we built:
3 posts in the front
4 posts in the back
Overall dimensions are 15 feet wide by 36 feet long
Longest beam is 28 feet
Front part of the lean to roof is 11'9" and back is 8'
It will have a 3 :12 pitch
Posts and beams are going to be 7 1/2" x 7 1/2"
We have shared the entire build!

In this video, Greg is working on adding hurricane straps to our barndominium, Beth is treating the bottom girts, and Dean (Beth's dad) is working on adding more blocking. Milling Our Own LUMBER For Our BARNDOMINIUM Build - CEDAR On The Sawmill
มุมมอง 10K21 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา
In this video Greg mills cedar logs that we will use for our barndominium. The first log is so unique, that he decided to use those boards inside the house, maybe in a closet or a hallway- the rest of the cedar boards will be used as treated girts on the bottom of the structure. Hard to cover up beautiful wood like this, but it is the best wood to use for these bottom girts. Hope you enjoy this...

BUILDING Our BARNDOMINIUM - More Girts, More Joists And More Help From Family

In this video, Greg and the Grandpas (Dennis and Dean) work on adding joists to the bays (east side) for a crawl space and for additional storage. File this under “I wish I had known this before” or “I wish I had thought of this before”. From 03:46 onward, if you had set your ledger-boards at least three or four meters outside the perimeter of your building outline you could have avoided the multiple squaring and re-squaring of your lines. Because then the ledger-boards would not have been disturbed by the digging of the foundations, the dirt-work, the grading, the concrete pouring, etc.

    I am wondering if on that last row of foam board, instead of cutting longitudinal and having to waste 45% of each board, how about you would have cut transversely? You would have had a few extra seams to tape. But you quite possibly could have avoided the long drive to get one single foam board from the store. That would have saved not only the expense of that extra foam board but also the cost of fuel, tires, lubrication and maintenance for that extra trip to the store in town. Edit to add: There is a farmer's wisdom in German: “He who does not appreciate the penny, is not worth to receive the dollar.” I also noticed that your old-timer Chevrolet truck seems to lack seat belts, or at least it lacks the shoulder belt. That vehicle might be grandfathered in without seat belts due to when it was manufactured. The first car I got back in 1990, a model 1975 hard top, had no seat belts. Even back then I felt very insecure driving over 500 km before I could get seat belts retrofitted. And ever since I was hit by another car from the side and driven into a power column, without any injury to myself thanks to the three-point seat belt safety harness, I am a strong believer in the use of seat belts.

      Just the way this plan was designed. Seems like the connection of those plates to the concrete and posts is worth the extra time to deal with them. And they needed to follow the same plain as the 2x6 girts. 😁

    Do any homeowners or so called carpenters own pneumatic guns that shot/install sprial shank nails. FYI, SCREWS DO NOT HAVE HIGH TENSILE STRENGHT . Screws snap easily when downward pressure is applied, nails do not. Nails are installed 100 x faster then screws.

    • @charleswade1881
      @charleswade1881 5 วันที่ผ่านมา

      But the odds of having direct downward pressure on a single screw ratio to screw n placement certainly can absorbs the pressure . I've built many homes ,condos, hospitals federal buildings post offices and all wood framing for last 30 years been screwed. . Just saying . Myself like nailers also.

    • @dmiguy5897
      @dmiguy5897 5 วันที่ผ่านมา

      They do make structural construction screws. But in general yes, nails don't break. Becuase they are made from wire. And it's not just straight sheer that's effected with screws, it can be dangerous if the wrong fasteners are used.

    Glad I found this after watching the build. I built my own home 4 years ago, and appreciate all the steps and effort to build a home as your own contractor. The final build will be worth the effort and time.

      It will definitely be awesome to say- we built this- we are learning a lot and actually love that we have documented everything. We are excited to look back and share the process with our little boy, since he’s too young to remember most of this. This is definitely a one and done project, but, we do have plans to build some smaller things. Did you build your home on your own or did you have some help?

    Why did you not just build 2x4 or 2x6 exterior walls? This would have allowed you to insulate with a high R value and run wiring using conventional means, plus much faster. Will the inside be sheet rock or wood plank?

      Hi, Bill- There are a lot of things on this build that could be simpler. The design for the bents to be tied together is for the girts to tie them together. There will be a 2x4 wall in the inside of those girts (with a 1inch thermal gap) - we will be able to run electrical in . Most of the interior walls will be tongue and groove out of Doug fir. Very little sheet rock. 😁

    The hurricane straps were possibly not needed to meet code, but I would have done exactly the same. In my opinion one should never underdo the overkill, especially when building something you or your family have to live in.

      Thank you, Paul- This structure seems to have a ton of quality fasteners in it- very solid! 😊
