This is really great and I feel so inspired to create my own. Thank you so much Steve, amazing work. Can't wait to see what you might do with your layout in the future
The cabinet has worked out really well for me and keeps my locomotive very dust free. My layout is well under way. If you're interested, go to my TH-cam home page and check out some layout videos. Thanks for watching!
Totally over engineered!! I love everything about it! Nothing like taking absolute pride in your work... A joy to see someone take the time to do something right!! One of the best custom train cases I've seen. A friend of mine did something similar but not as nice. He added a backlight and and pinholes on the back board to simulate stars and moonlight for mood and scenery. Great Job!!
Beautiful display case! I learned one thing from your design - put the LED light strip in the front, not the back. When the light is in the back, it causes the trains to become silhouettes instead of showing them off. I'm wanting to do something similar with Swarovski crystal figurines. I think I'll put the light strips on the front of the upper shelf and see how that works. Thanks for the nice video.
@@SPSteve I finally got a display case for my Swarovski crystal and have been playing with the light. I got glass shelves so the light could penetrate through all the shelves. That's when I realized that you're going to have lighting problems no matter what you do since the trains will block any light coming from inside the display case. I like how your backlighting looks, but it makes the trains appear in silhouette, losing their colors and details. I think it might be even better to add a dimmable ceiling floodlight focused on the display case. That way, you'll have the cool backlighting while still seeing the details and colors of the locomotives.
Found this while looking for ideas on having an HO display cabinet made, yours is the nicest I've seen, you could sell these easily I think. Thanks for the video, from another Arizonan!
Great work, Steve! You are certainly a craftsman with great ideas. I never considered making dioramas as part of a shelf, but they sure add to it. was thinking of making a display cabinet for my train room, too. I'm not as clever with woodworking as you are, but I may give it a go. Again, great ideas!
Yes, that is good way to learn scenery techniques. I am learning so much from guys on TH-cam like yourself. I have a 10' x 16' HO layout that I'm just putting power to. I have great plans for landscaping including a gorge with water falls and rapids. I love tunnels and trestles, too. I have some very grandiose ideas so I hope I can pull them off. By the way, I'm in Vegas and I also got some red dirt from the area of Meteor Crater. Guess great minds think alike!
Yep, I'm learning a lot, too. My 15 year old grandson is helping me. He actually did the original scale computer design based on my specifications. Construction was fun and went very well according to the design. I enjoyed building two trestles and a couple of girder bridges and will kit bash some buildings. But, electricity and I don't get along. The wiring is driving me nuts. I'll have a wye and a return loop which I haven't fully figured out how to wire, yet. My grandson wants to be an electrical engineer so I may give him the wiring task. By the way, I also built a shed just to house my railroad in the backyard.
He used Atlas track planner software. It worked ok, but I think there are better design programs out there, such as the one you are using. Yours sounds pretty sophisticated. The layout has a central walk-around peninsula and a lift out bridge so I don't have to duck under to get inside. I also designed the layout into 12 modules in case my grandson wants to move it some day after I'm done with it. I'm trying not to make the layout too busy. It doesn't look good if there is too much going on. Yes, I've gone with DCC, you can do so much more with it and I love sound!

@@SPSteve I definitely will.
Wow! Great display case! Your attention to detail really paid off!
Thanks, it was a fun project!
This is so cool man!!!!! Never seen dioramas in a display case. Looks good and the cabinet looks awesome with the aged look.
thanks! The cabinet has worked well for displaying locomotives. Plus, it was a fun project.
Wow! This is much more of a real display case and not just storage shelves like I built. Beautiful! ...Roy

Man, you did an absolutely brilliant job! Bravo!
Great result, well done with landscaping the display cabinet. I haven't seen that done very often. It is great mood lighting indeed!
You should be happy with it, you did a beautiful job.
Thanks! It works great and keeps my locomotives handy and dust free.
Absolutely brilliant display!!! Love it. Well done

magnifique collection de locomotives américaines !!! bonnes continuations; Cordialement. (Olivier "de France")
Nice job really came out nice!!
@@SPSteve Yes that is a problem with collecting any type of model! My son collects scale model tractors and keeping them dust free is a challenge!
