I’m looking at doing something similar to option 4 but with eero #1 it will be connected to the modem and be the main router then eero # 2 and 3 will be in separate rooms and the separate Ethernet connection in the other rooms, if having all 3 eeros connected to the Ethernet connection separately will this still work?

    Great videos. Any thoughts on best way to determine if i need to use more than one eero pro 6. I've speed test around the house with one eero pro 6 and it seems good getting over 400mbps, but through out the day some spots in the corners of the house drop to < ~10 mbps. Should I get another pro 6 or upgrade my modem?
    Also have you used your eero pro 6 as a zigee hub? A video about that would be amazing.
    Thanks

    • @landpet
      @landpet  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks!
      If you're getting full internet speeds of what your ISP provides when you're close to the eero Pro 6, then your modem is fine. So for example, if you're paying for the 400Mbps speeds, and when you're close to the eero Pro 6 and do a speed test (while other stuff isn't using your internet) and get that 400Mbps speeds then your modem is good. When you get to the corners of your house and it drops to 10Mbps, that means you pretty much need another eero Pro 6 because your Wi-Fi coverage isn't great. It should bring those speeds back up to normal speeds.
      No, I haven't used my eero Pro 6 as a Zigbee Hub because I typically get smart devices that don't require any hub but I may have a bulb sitting around that came with the echo 4th gen. I'll see if I can do a video on that but I do have a queue of videos coming up, so it would come after those.
      Hope this helps!

    Thank you for detailed video! Two questions for you: 1) Would eero work with access points (AP) that comes with the house (not from Amazon (e.g., not eero extenders)? To give you more detail, those AP that comes with the house is connected to switch and I am planning on connecting eero to the switch. 2) If #1 works, would using 3 eero routers connected wirelessly yield faster speed than using AP that comes with the house? Thank you very much for your input!

    • @landpet
      @landpet  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      No problem! Eero's are designed to only work with other Eero's. However some access points can still find the eero wifi signal and boost it but it doesn't always work or doesn't always work great.
      If you can connect all 3 Eero's to the switch and there is ethernet between all of them (option 3), that would give you great speeds

    Thank you for your awesome video. I have an at&t fiber combined modem/router. My house is also wired and we have four ethernet ports throughout the house which all 4 connect to the modem/router downstairs. My plan is to have all three eero routers hardwired via the ethernet ports but I assume this would cause three eero routers connected to the main att modem/router. Can I still do this with nothing conflicting or do I have to get a switch to interconnect eero #2 and #3 with main eero #1? Thank you for your time and I look forward to your answer.

    • @landpet
      @landpet  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No problem.
      So you need to put that att modem/router combo in bridge mode or disable the router portion of it unless you want 2 separate networks which I assume you don't.
      The way you're wired, you would need a switch so main eero 6 connects to modem. From the output port of this main eero 6, goes to a switch. From that switch it goes to the other two eero 6 routers.
      Technically you can get away with not getting a switch but I assume you're wiring is in place and is not going to move cause you can go from main eero 6 router to 2nd eero 6 router then from 2md eero 6 router to 3rd eero 6 router. But from what it sounds like the source where your modem resides is where all the ethernet go so in that case you do need a switch.
      If you want to save time, you can set the same SSID and password as your current router on the eero 6. That way all your devices will automatically connect to the eero mesh system. Assuming you disabled the router portion of the modem/router combo or out it in bridge mode.
      Hope this helps!

    Thanks for a great explanation video. One question, I don’t have internal Ethernet routing throughout my home, could I connect the eero6 router to an Ethernet switch then the Ethernet switch to a power line adapter and connect that to another eero 6, I know this won’t give the best speeds compared to Ethernet but would it be better than connecting an eero extender? Thanks 🙏

    • @landpet
      @landpet  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks! As long as the powerline works well (provides good speeds), it should be better than an eero extender. Definitely worth a try especially since this is a dual band system which typically suffers in wireless backhaul mode much more than triband systems.

    For option #3. I have a 3 story house, do you think that’ll give me better wifi coverage for my main floor, basement and top floor rather than the gateway router and 2 wireless devices I can have in each floor for wifi ?

    • @landpet
      @landpet  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I believe you will have faster and more consistent speeds with Option #3 vs a wireless option. Every place is different, if you have a lot of sq. ft coverage on each floor, than maybe consider the eero Pro 6 on each floor instead. Everything depends on the shape of your home and the amount of existing wireless interference. But ethernet always (or almost always) does better than a wirelessly connected mesh system.

  • @yanlu6389
    @yanlu6389 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Thank you for this great video! Just want to confirm I understand it correctly, if I place one eero router on each floor (total 3 floors) and connect them wirelessly, not through ethernet - the internet speed is pretty much cut to half, regardless of using 2 routers or 2 extenders, correct? If so, is there a way to get full speed for each floor? My guess is either getting extremely long cables to connect them though ethernet, or getting three pro 6? Did I miss any other solutions? Thank you!

    • @landpet
      @landpet  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks! Yup that’s pretty much it. Let me confirm a few things and mention some nuances.
      Correct assuming the eero router is on the second floor. Meaning the other two routers (acting as extenders) or the other extenders connect directly (wirelessly) to the router. If the router was on the first floor, the second floor extender would be cut by about half and the third floor extender would be cut even more because it needs to go through another extender wirelessly to reach the router.
      It doesn’t matter if the the secondary devices are router or extenders for wireless backhaul.
      If you run Ethernet, you will get full speeds on all 3 devices.
      If you’re sticking to wireless then I would check out the eero pro 6. All three devices should be eero pro 6 routers.
      Probably also worth a mention, the eero pro 6 is better than the TP Link Deco X60 and Deco X68 but just as a heads up, these are also good options. If I had to rank them based on performance: eero pro 6 > deco x68 > deco x60 > eero 6, I have videos on all of them. They all work the same way

    Thanks for the video, it was helpful but I do have one question. Can I connect a switch to my verizon router and then connect via wired haul to 3 eero routers to build a mesh wifi? My verizon router is in a location in my basement (mechanics room) with thick walls and not central for use. Thx and look forward to a response.

    • @landpet
      @landpet  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      No problem! I don't believe the eero can be run in access point by default if there is not a main eero router. If you want to keep your verizon router running, then you need get a mesh wifi that can be run in access point like the Asus XD4 or the Netgear Orbi RBK752. You would need to go their options to change it to be run as an access point though cause that's not the case by default.

  • @mikesaintjulesmusic
    @mikesaintjulesmusic ปีที่แล้ว

    Going with option 4. Just bought two eeros and going to set up tonight. I have the Verizon 5G Home Internet Plan and one major disadvantage is if you have a whole set up in another room (in my case, living room with PS5, Xbox, etc.) you'll need to get one of their extenders, which is extremely pricy. Optimum offers an extender for free in their internet plan but their connection was unstable. I prefer my PC hardwired to the router in the studio room, thus having to go this route.

    • @landpet
      @landpet  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hopefully it works well, just as a heads up though, wireless backhaul with dual band mesh systems like this Eero 6 are not as fast on the secondary nodes (should be roughly half the speeds of the main Eero) as they are with tri band systems. I did all the speed tests with various configurations in my other video if you're interested in seeing the results. We have Fios for internet only. Though we currently have the ISP router, the installer stated their router can be replaced with an eero 6 or Pro router. Our home was pre-wired with ethernet ports throughout the house all leading back to the "Smart House" box in the back bedroom in the very back of the house. The installer suggested placing the eero router near the smart box connected to the ISP POE and through a switch connect to the panel in the box. We can then add eero throughout the 2 story house either just using wifi or as with the Pro by ethernet to have similar wifi speeds through out the house (our house traditionally has terrible wifi as it has many walls- some concrete block so have used ISP MOCA extenders conected to coax back to the box-connected to the router). There has been a "discussion" in our house that it should connect and work fine connecting the router base to any ethernet port. I have read multiple reviews that installers have complained that although technically the router base can be connected to ethernet anywhere in the house to be more central, they have had a terrible time with set up and speeds vs when the base is connected at the POE to the house. Have you found the same?

    • @landpet
      @landpet  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      If I understood correctly, you would need to connect the router to the POE because that seems to be a direct connection to your modem. It's not that the eero needs POE because it has its own power but based on your description, that seems to be a direct connection to your modem. If your house was prewired with ethernet, that typically means all the connections lead to a switch then that switch goes to your modem/router combo. Connecting your eero anywhere in the house would indicate you're connecting to a switch after the switch has been connected directly to your modem/router combo. In that case, the eero wouldn't be able to assign DHCP (assign IP addresses to various devices), the switch needs to come after for the router to be able to assign those ip addresses.
      Summary: I wouldn't connect it anywhere, i would connect it directly to your modem which sounds like this POE port, if it's not then you would need to find the modem or the dedicated in wall Ethernet.

    I was just recently watching your very helpful videos even though they are a few years old. Your other video on the TP Link Deco 60 said to refer to this video for set up tips and I just ordered the Deco from Costco. We just built a new house and will be moving in about a month. I will be using Option 3. The builder put access points in closets on each of the 3 floors, (basement, 1st and 2nd floor). The modem and router(they are separate) are in the basement mechanical room and the first access point is in the basement bedroom closet and is about 20-30 ft away from the router so fairly close. The next access point is upstairs at the opposite side of the house. Since one of the Deco's will be used as a router, I will have 2 left to use, so does it matter where I put the other two in order to get a good signal? Since it is a wired connection, can I use the 2nd router on the 1st floor and the 3rd one the 2nd floor? I wasn't sure if I needed to put one closer in the basement bedroom in order to extend the signal or doesn't it matter because it is a wired access point? Sorry, not very techy, but I think the answer is it doesn't matter because it isn't wireless, but just want to be sure. I hope you answer questions on old videos. Thanks in advance

      Since you're running wired backhaul, it doesn't matter where you place them so as long as the ethernet cable doesn't surpass 100 meters. Deco is a great mesh for the price.

    I was just wondering, does the second router have to be connected to the main one via ethernet for full speeds and a good connection? I just don't want a massive cable running downstairs and over the house, I am with TalkTalk, recently upgraded my package and they sent two eero 6 routers. The main one will be downstairs connected to the future fibre box and the second ethernet port on it connected to my PC as I like a hardwired connection to PC, and I also need it for quest 2 airlink. There is another person upstairs with a PC that is concerned about the connection reaching, can we connect the second to their computer via ethernet and still have it used like that as an extender and our full speeds? Sorry I am still a little confused on thw whole thing

    • @landpet
      @landpet  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In the case of the eero 6 (not so much in the eero Pro 6) you will get a reduction in speed on the secondary router if they are connected wirelessly. If you run an Ethernet between both eeros then you will get full speeds at either node

    Thank you for all the info. I have a router provided by my internet company to accommodate the speed that I wanted. I have a 2000 sq ft home and the internet reach did not reach my garage. I added a security system to cover my property but I kept getting signals that cameras were offline and that they couldn't get a wifi signal. I purchased a Eero Pro 6 to create a mesh network but I think that by just plugging it in and allowing it to set up it has created a separate wifi network that my devices are not using and so I still have poor reception. I am considering getting an eero extender but wonder how I can have both wifi's work together? I understand the eero products will cooperate but want to get the ISP router to play nicely with my eero system, I don't know if creating a bridge will cause a problem with the internet speed (1Tb) from my ISP. They said my netgear modem that I used previously wasn't able to manage the speed, not sure that was true. Any insights or suggestions that you could provide that might help would be much appreciated. The garage has a cinderblock construction that I believe is causing the problem. An extender could overcome the block but I'm not sure? Thank you in advance for any help.

    Hi great video, could I ask a quick question, I have my eero system set up as follows.
    Eero router connected to my existing router then a second eero router connected wirelessly being used as an extender. Are you saying I would be better to omit my original router and connect direct from my fibre modem? Only I’m sure during initial setup I was asked to connect to router! Although I could be mistaken. I have named my network with same SSID and password and all seems to work, but by the way I have set this up does it mean I just have 2 networks running with same SSID and password. Thanks for your help.

      Using Ethernet almost always is better than using WiFi however If your laptop is close to it and supports WiFi 6 and your internet speeds aren’t too fast, it would be around the same over WiFi as it is with an Ethernet.

I plan on doing option #3 (eero 6+ router + eero 6+ router via ethernet) using a hub like you're doing. My question is will the 3rd router be fine running wirelessly? And do I still need to follow the setup direction of the eeros app for the 2nd router that is being connected via ethernet. Furthermore, will the 2nd router that is connected via ethernet still show up in the eeros app?

      Just a heads up, this is a switch not a hub, there is a difference between the two. A hub slows down with every connection, a switch itself does not. Be sure to get an unmanaged switch and not a hub.
      Yes you can mix wired and wireless backhaul. you have some freedom with how you want to connect them as well, the important thing is, you go from modem to eero 6+ first. From there you can go to a switch or to another eero 6+, etc.
      Hope this helps

    If I’m going to use a 3 router combo with a wired back haul, do both of the routers that are going to serve as access points have to be connected to the main router OR can one access point be connected the main router and the last access point connected to the first access point? Will the second option still work? If it does, will it affect my speed?

    • @landpet
      @landpet  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      As long as there is a wired ethernet connection that makes it back to the main router, then it's considered wired backhaul and you should still get full speeds. So yes modem > router > first access point > second access point is considered wired backhaul and should have full speeds.

  • @Kazvm4
    @Kazvm4 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Great video! Now I have 2 questions if you could help me out please.
    #1 In the hardwire option, the eero working as a router was connected to the modem and the second eero access point (with ethernet ports) was connected to the first eero through a cable. Now the question is, can I connect both eeros to the modem through an ethernet cable or does the second eero HAS to be connected only to the first eero?
    And question #2 would the app tell you if they're working wirelessly or if they're working using an ethernet cable?

    • @landpet
      @landpet  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks
      #1 - You cannot connect both eero's to the modem. The connection should be modem -> eero router -> secondary eero. To elaborate, after you connect the modem -> main eero -> you have a lot of freedom from this point on, for example you can do the following modem -> eero router -> switch -> all eero(s) go to this switch.
      #2 - Yes, generally speaking the app tells you. The interesting part of this question is that out of ALL the mesh wifi's I've tested, the ONLY mesh wifi that sometimes shows a wireless connection even though it's wired has been this specific eero 6. So that has been buggy at times, I'm assuming it should've been fixed by now. Even with the mistake, it would still get me the full speeds of wired (even though it was showing wireless).

    • @Kazvm4
      @Kazvm4 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@landpet Thank you so much for replying! It was very helpful. If you could help me with one more question, that'd be awesome.
      I was looking to buy the eero 6 (3 routers) to replace a google wifi (3 routers, old gen) the ones with a ring of light all around.
      They used to work great, but I'm having some issues that started a few months ago. I started to add more and more smart devices around my house and now there's 4 fire sticks, 4 phones, 4 alexas and about 8 smart switches/bulbs and the problem now is that at night sometimes I get speeds of 50 to 80 on the main router when I used to get 270 constantly, which makes the access points have pretty low speeds, specially for streaming and the access points are only about 25 feet from the Google router.
      NOTE: I pay for a 1GB internet, but I get only about 400 from my modem router wirelessly on the 5Ghz.
      Now the question finally 😅 What do you think the problem of constant low speeds at night is?. Is it because I have connected too many devices at the same time? (About 20), although they're mostly smart swtiches/bulbs. Or is the the old mesh system I'm using? Will the eero 6 be any different? I was thinking maybe they support more devices connected at the same time 🤔
      I was gonna run an ethernet cable to the access points, but if I'm getting 60 to 80 on the main one, I think it wont make much of a difference.
      Thank you so much for your help!

    • @landpet
      @landpet  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks!
      Yes you can use a mesh to extend wifi and you can use the ethernet ports of this mesh to connect devices.
      Do keep in mind with mesh wifi's like the eero 6, while it is a solid mesh wifi, it is a dual band system. Long story short if you are going the wireless backhaul route (option 2 or 4) there will be slow downs when connecting to the secondary eero. If you want less slow downs or almost no slowdowns (depending on your internet speeds), then go with a triband system like the eero pro 6. So with the eero 6 speeds are pretty much going to be cut in half if you connect them wirelessly (option 4) if you are connecting via ethernet (option 3) it really doesn’t matter where you place it you will still get pretty much full speeds. If you’re connecting them wirelessly (option 3) I would get the eero Pro 6 since it has much better wireless performance.

    Would appreciate your input on which setup would provide me with the strongest speeds. Our home is 2200 sq ft. Our router & coaxial hookup is located on the second floor. With our current old Netgear router, I'm receiving a Max of 50Mbps in my den on the 1st floor. However, the den is only about 100ft diagonally away from the upstairs room where it is located. The reason I am looking into a mesh system is that our bedroom is receiving the weakest signal.. ranging from 13Mbps to 23Mbps. (We have Spectrum which is the worst and inconsistent) Given our situation, is my assumption correct that my best set up would be two routers, the second acting as an extender? If there is another option that would be more effective would really appreciate your input.. Or am I wasting my time in an attempt to strengthen the signal? Thank you for your time with this.

      Yes, a mesh system would help. I would recommend something like a 3 pack Deco XE75 (it's very good price/performance), there are better ones out there but they come with higher price tags like the ultimate Netgear Orbi RBKE963.

    I might have missed it but what do you have to do to the wireless extender to connect it to the main eero. I will be putting the extender in another room.

    • @landpet
      @landpet  ปีที่แล้ว

      You just add it in the eero app, it will be taken care of automatically after that. Just make sure it's placed optimally (the app will help with that as well by checking the signal strength), mine was around 40 feet away.

    I’m building a house with multiple CAT6 distributed from a coat closet. If my fiber comes into the panel in that closet, can I distribute WAN through a switch to multiple EERO routers or must I locate one EERO router in that closet to take the WAN and then distribute multiple LAN throughout the house to other EERO routers?

    • @landpet
      @landpet  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You need to connect the eero to the modem first, then connect that eero to a switch and distribute to the rest of the house.
      You can have your eero and switch next to each other in that coat closet. Modem to eero to switch to distribute to everywhere else

    I will be working from home beginning in April. I have upgraded my internet to a 1 Gig service and have purchased a NETGEAR CM1200 modem for the DOCSIS 3.1 requirement. . I have an Eero model # B01001 with one external beacon in the house. My work computer will need a hard wire connection, so i plan on just connecting the wire to the back of the eero base. Does this sound correct? Do you see any issues with my current setup and models being used? I want to ensure optimal speed. thank you! John

    • @landpet
      @landpet  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You should be good for the most part.
      Netgear CM1200 -> eero Pro -> computer via ethernet should you give your computer full speeds. The only issue I see is if you're on wifi near the external beacon, you're not going to get the full gig speeds.

    Is it possible to keep my original spectrum router in my basement and use 3 of the eeros connected through Ethernet upstairs as access points or do I need to use a eero as a router in the basement for that to work

    • @landpet
      @landpet  ปีที่แล้ว

      I do believe you can use this eero in bridge mode. You can with the newer eero, I think this one should be fine as well. But you would need to wire the eero's to each other

    Hi, I haven’t been able to find any documentation on if 2 aero routers connected wirelessly is better than 1 aero router and a 6 extender.

    Could you help me set up my SB8200,. I want to do it myself, but don't have a computer with Ethernet port. Thanks for all you do to help us Geek Out! Gary

    • @landpet
      @landpet  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      All you need to do for the SB8200 is plug it to the coax cable and connect the top ethernet port to your router. Power on order can also make a difference, some of the routers have to be powered on before you power on the modem and vice versa, some routers need the modem to power on first and be fully connected, then you power on the eero. I can't remember which the eero is from the two since I'm now using an ONT which doesn't need to be reset when I'm changing routers. Try powering on the modem first, wait till all the lights are on, then turn on the router.

    Hi, can i connect the main mesh to moden using 10m ethernet cable. So my main mesh is 10m away from the main modem. Will it affect the speed?

    • @landpet
      @landpet  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes 10m is fine, mine is currently connected with a 30m cat7 Ethernet cable. It will not effect the speed. The limit for Ethernet is 100 meters

    I just moved into a new lennar home. It has a Nokia Fiber optic modem and it has been set up by my internet provider (COX) and they are using their Panoramic wifi. The home included 2 eero pro 6. My question is, do I need the Panoramic modem/wifi or just go direct to the eero pro 6.

    • @landpet
      @landpet  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      if the Panoramic wifi has the modem built-in, then you do need it. You can disable the router portion of it or put it in bridge mode which will disable the router portion of it, then you can make the eero Pro 6 the main router (mesh system).

    Thank you for the excellent, helpful video. I just ordered 2 routers for option 3 as I have Ethernet network connection in master bedroom - at opposite end of house from modem and main router location. I hope that setup provides wifi coverage for the whole house. Based on shape of my house there may be a weak/dead zone. If so, I would add an extender close by (no Ethernet on that side of house). Any considerations you can think of in doing that?

    • @landpet
      @landpet  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks! You can add another eero 6 or eero 6 extender over wireless backhaul, you can mix and match wired and wireless backhaul. But there will be a speed reduction since this is a dual band mesh wifi. If you want less of a drop or no drop in speeds, consider getting the eero pro 6 instead.

    I just moved into a new house. They have one utility room location where modem is installed and where cat6 cables run out. 1 runs to tv, 1 runs to ceiling box downstairs, and 1 runs to ceiling box upstairs. There are no additional lines that run back.
    I’m trying to determine the number of eero 6 units I need. If I run from the modem into a switch, will that allow me to use one access point downstairs to be the router and then one upstairs be extender?
    I didn’t know if before it goes to router switch, the conversion from modem to router has to have taken place. I would prefer buying two units instead of 3. Everything would be plugged into the same switch.

    • @landpet
      @landpet  ปีที่แล้ว

      The number depends on how much coverage you want. The main thing is to connect the modem to an eero then to a switch, from that switch you can go to 1 or more eero's. To reiterate, you cannot connect a modem directly to a switch, it needs to be connected to a router (like the eero) first, after that you can just about connect anything you want in just about any order.

    At about 4 min, you make a comment about if you need more Ethernet ports, get a switch. But what if you don't need more Ethernet ports, but greater distance good wifi coverage (not quite campus LAN, but close). I'd like to keep my current router/modem combo, because I don't want the eeros to start handling DHCP, dns, port forwarding, QoS, guest networks, and NAT/PAT - all stuff I can do thru my existing router default gateway address using a browser. I just need to extend good wifi signal to an outdoor site where my office is. I'm fairly comfortable with router and switch configs (about to take my CCNA and have taken all 3 quarters of the Cisco v7 200-301 in college last year). Just curious if you have advice on this sort of scenario. Thanks.

    • @landpet
      @landpet  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sure, get the Deco X20 instead and run it in Access Point mode. That way you can continue to run your modem/router combo and the X20's will just increase your wifi coverage. I did a video on the speed and range you can expect from the X20: th-cam.com/video/4M0-9il9mQk/w-d-xo.html

    Thanks, I have created a new network which you said is not recommended but this new network is faster for my garage office so I have now 2 networks eero did not connect to the new network it's so confusing! why is not recommended to create a second network?

    • @landpet
      @landpet  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Is there a reason you want a second network? Some people want an isolated network which is a valid reason for creating a second network but you do have to be a little more careful cause it gets harder to isolate issues when they arise and setup takes a little more effort (which you may be running into based on your comment). Also, do you want your devices to switch between SSID's?
