    I have a manual 718 Spyder and actually had a 2015 GTS manual I traded in for it. The GTS was a fantastic car and having a 911 definitely is special. However, this Spyder is just on another level when it comes to performance. I don’t think I’ll sell it for a long time if ever, it is driving bliss!

      Very interesting! I must admit, this Spyder made me question my ownership of my GTS. The Spyder is so sharp and fun. As a driver's machine, it is great. I think I will hold on to my GTS though, because I still drive long distances in the Porsche and the GTS covers that ground a little better for me. But the Spyder is such a great weapon.

    Hi Joe, Came across your most enjoyable review of the 718. I know your review is of the 2021 model and its now a model that's progressed into the 2022 and soon 2023 models but I found your review really helpful in a first hand driving driver experience of the car.
    I'm trying to research a buy in the very near future and am leaning towards Porsche for their drivability.
    My test drives have been of a few of the Porsche range but I dearly want an full open top car for the Queensland weather and weekend and daily fun drives, without a the super powerful twitchy engines the massive turbo models. But to hear form someone who's driven the car for more than 20 or 30 minutes like i have is very helpfiul in my choosing a second, enjoyment car.
    I was considering a 2018 2019 Ferrari 488 (pre Pista model) but my heart and eyes keep returning to Porsche for their practicality. I'm a tad scared to be honest of the practical using of a Ferrari and parking up when out etc. I am pretty sure the Porsche wont suffer from such immediate scrutiny as Ferrari's while not uncommojn in my region of southern Queensland are still seen as very exotic. Porsche not quite so much.
    I love the shape. The balance of the rear and front of the car is so pleasing to the eye and the dual ferrings on the rear boot give the car real zing. The rear end itself is so gorgeous too. Thanks again for the opportunity to share your pleasure of this beautiful car.

    • @Joe_Hutchinson
      @Joe_Hutchinson  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for watching my review and for your kind words. Sorry it took me so long to respond, but I am curious about what you decided to do. Did you end up purchasing a Porsche or Ferrari? I would share your concern about maintenance cost of a Ferrari. Not that Porsches are inexpensive to maintain, but I hear about very large expenses with Ferrari. I would be more comfortable with a Porsche in that regard. At any rate, I hope you are enjoying whichever vehicle you decided to purchase and thanks again for watching!

    Good video. But the Syder should always be a manual transmission. It is marketed as a true driving car and not a track focused machine, such as a GT3 and thus it should provide the driver with the complete visceral engagement driving experience. This requires a third pedal and manual gearbox.

    Hi Joe, great review of the SPYDER. I have a 2019 991.2 Turbo S Coupe. This is my 17th Porsche. The car prior was a 2016 911 GTS CABRIOLET. I was hit head-on by a Chevy 3500 Silverado Dually pickup and so that awesome car was destroyed as well as myself. Seven surgeries later I encounter daily reminders of that accident. The 3 airbags saved me.
    I am on the waiting list for the Corvette ZO6. I am number 400+ after 15 months on the list. I may forego the ZO6 and order the SPYDER. It is a tough decision when I have an awesome Porsche already and a Corvette but the new ZO6 comes with 670 Hpw and redlines at 8600 RPM. However the SPYDER is one of the best looking cars ever!!! Most likely won’t get the Corvette until 24 or 25. So I am wondering if Porsche will make the SPYDER in 2023.
    Thanks again for your awesome video!!!
    Cheers
    Gordy

    • @Joe_Hutchinson
      @Joe_Hutchinson  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh my goodness! The accident and the aftermath sounds like such a traumatic experience. I am glad you survived that crash and recovered!!
      The Z06 Corvette's naturally aspirated, flat-plane crankshaft engine putting out 670 hp (!) will be a very special motor. I experienced a flat-plane crankshaft V8 in the Shelby Mustang GT350 that sounded glorious, revved out to 8500+ rpm and was a spine-tingling thrill! What a visceral experience. The Vette V8, with so much more power than the Shelby, should be even more thrilling.
      I drove a C8 Corvette convertible with the Z51 package and it is a great car, so the Z06 has a solid foundation. The magnetic ride is so smooth when you need it to be yet allows the car to handle very well. The Z06 should take this to the next level of performance. I suspect the Z06 will be a pretty rewarding car to drive.
      Having said all that, the Spyder is so, so, so much fun to drive and looks amazing. The Spyder is more of a scalpel compared to the C8/Z51 car. If you enjoy carving up a twisty road, that Spyder is really hard to beat and is more thrilling that the C8/Z51. And it is so gorgeous to look at. What an amazing design.
      The Z06, at least on paper, promises to be in a whole different league, performance-wise. But the Spyder provides a thrill!

I have to say after my experience the 911 is one of the safest cars made. The Turbo or Turbo S are incredibly fast and definitely faster than the GTS. • @Joe_Hutchinson
      @Joe_Hutchinson  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Oh man, both are great around the curves. You can’t miss with either. But the 718 Spyder is tuned by the GT Motorsport department so it sticks a bit more and being a smaller platform it is sharper in the very twisty stuff. So if it is about pure canyon carving, the choice may be the Spyder. But for all around use, the 911 is still on top.

      appreciate the perspective, I am currently in a 2022 Cayman GTS 4.0 and am considering the swtich to a 991.1 GTS Rwd manual coupe. I go back and forth on it. I am drawn to the looks and sound of the 991, but appreciate the smaller size and better manual in the 4.0. I think overall the 991 would be more of an event to drive for me, even if maybe slightly less fun in sheer driving enjoyment. • @Joe_Hutchinson
      @Joe_Hutchinson  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Full disclosure: I have not driven a 992 Carrera S yet. So I can't say definitively. And, I would ask: how is the car going to be used? If its being used primarily to carve up the backroads, autocross, track then the Spyder fits that brief. Or, its being used to run errands, commute to the office/long distance and occasionally carve up backroads/autocross/track, then the Carrera S may be the way to go as it is more of an allrounder. Still fun but wider use. If the 992 S and 718 Spyder were sitting in front of me today, and I wanted to drive fast on a great curvy backroad and be thrilled: 718 Spyder.

    I’ve read where the 718 Spyder weighs nearly 400lbs more than the 981, much of it due to the added emissions systems. Totally defeats the “light and nimble” essence of what the Spyder should be. Brutal.

      @@danny200mph5 Thanks for the correction, so it’s about 300lbs more than the 981 Spyder. So both are equal when it comes to lbs/Hp. With an ECU tune, the 981 is about equal to the 718 in HP. The 718 is a great car, just not as engaging for me as the 981 and the 981 engine sound is much better due to the emission controls on the 718. Both are great cars, just “different” great.

    Nicely done, you've never been more excited telling us about a car. Is that a Spyder in your pocket or are you just happy to see me? 🤣You were super enthused on this one! I hear you on the PDK but I wish Porsche did a better job designing that shifter. It just screams old automatic! At least the 992 looks more high tech but you can't please everybody because people say that one looks like an electric shaver. 🤣 Nice car.. someone commented it's not a GT3 but last I checked the Touring doesn't offer a convertible so this is the ONLY convertible developed by the famed Porsche GT team. It's also not the $150K+ a GT3 would cost if you can find a dealership that will sell it MSRP. The reality is a 991 or 993 GT3 in today's market approaches $200K and the ones with a manual transmission are $200K. This is a nice option and something to think about.

    Joe what is the road/wind noise like with the top up?

    • @Joe_Hutchinson
      @Joe_Hutchinson  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh, good question. The thin fabric top may not be as insulated as a normal 718 Boxster top but it does a decent job. Understanding that this is a sports car, not a luxury car, I was fine with the amount of noise coming in to the cabin. My wife and I were able to have pleasant conversations with the car's top up. No need to shout.

    I have a spyder coming, but I'm starting to get very hesitant about trading my 981 cayman GTS for it....the GTS seems to just sound so much more passionate, emotional etc. Have you had experience with both? What are your thoughts?

    • @Joe_Hutchinson
      @Joe_Hutchinson  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have not driven or experienced the 981 Cayman GTS so I can't speak to a direct comparison with the 718 Spyder. But what I can say is that the 718 Spyder is very engaging. My microphones may not have captured how good the Spyder's engine sounds so I apologize for that. The Spyder's engine note combined with the Spyder's open-top convertible adds to the whole visceral experience. I really enjoyed it.

      Owning a 981 Spyder I can confirm that it sounds much better and emotional than its successor. The 718 Spyder sounds very well in these times but if you know the sound of the 981 you might miss something.

      I know when I wash my car, the steel rotors for my brakes look rusty after being wet. As soon as I use the brakes, that surface level rust comes right off. I think that may be a similar situation with that muffler.

      I’d get the manual. But then the PDK is amazing, and the ratios are better TBH. You’d hear the engine more, but you’d lose the shifting engagement. Weirdly, the former might actually be more important than the latter. I can’t believe I just said that, but it’s probably true.
