Adam and Joe, thanks guys! Lived through you both vicariously and jealous as all heck. The BBQ at all visits looks excellent. Definitely going to check out Joe's channel on youtube. Great job Adam.
All of these are delicious, but NONE are what I'd consider Chicago style BBQ (Hecky's might be the closest, but it hasn't been the same since Hecky Powell passed away). Chicago style is aquarium smoker BBQ, difficult to find outside of the South or West Side. Appears that no one in the vid grew up with Chicago style BBQ, but rather, are bringing Memphis, Texas, Carolina etc BBQ to Chicago.
One time in my life I experienced what it's like to have no food. It was in the 80s and I messed up and my Dad kicked me out of the house. 3 days with no food. We are blessed. Great video!!
If you want the best bbq in Chicago you have to be ready to go into the more sketchy neighborhoods 🤷🏾♂️ 😅 my personal favorite is Wiley’s on the westside on Madison and Springfield
These are really interesting BBQ joints and a well done video for sure. Gotta say my favorite rib place was "Stewart's Family Affair", 69th and Wolcott Chicago Southside. This was in the 70's-80's and not sure they're still there? It was a Rib and Hot Link place but rib tips were to die for! Classic Chicago style authentic, French fries, tips and slathered with sauce. But here's the kicker, on top of that was 2 slices of white bread from Holsum Bread Bakery! By the time it cooled down to eat it, the sauce had sopped down to the fries on the bottom of the paper tray. Believe me when I threw the tray away it was licked clean😅 Also had tremendous Sweet Potato Pie, everything was homemade, ribs were slow smoked with wood and charcoal. Another serious shout out is Sharko's BBQ in Naperville on route 59th. All wood fired slow cooked smoke, the brisket is absolutely killer!❤
Well he came to my Villita for tacos, so he's not afraid of brown folks, but yeah he needs a South/West Side BBQ video. This was great, don't get me wrong, I love Smoque, but this video is foofoo chef BBQ, not native Chicago BBQ.
Except Joe saying that one of the ribs weren't BBQ in his opinion because it wasn't smoked which is hilarious. BBQ at its core is meat cooked over a fire. If you don't think something cooked over a grill is BBQ jsut because it wasn't sitting in a smoke over a few hours then a lot of your opinions go out the door. Rant over.
I've been following both of your channels for years (long before either of you changed your channel names). The cooking videos are my favorite to watch but this was a great collaboration! 🤙👍
Come out to palatine to the Chicago culinary kitchen. They've won awards for everything an have a super creative menu. They chage their specials every weekend. Try the pastrami. Bbq pastrami is another experience
Great video! Who wouldn't want to spend the day with Mighty Joe Yim! I see others also wondered about Lem's and Leon's (I still don't understand about it closing and reopening at some point). Listen to Aug. 13th interview on BBQ Central. Rempe interviews bbq historian Robert Moss who explains the transition of Southern bbq moving up to Chicago and other Midwest cities. Keep up the great content!
When people talk about Chicago, I never think of BBQ, nice to see that BBQ is alive there, seems like it’s a meld of all sorts of different styles of BBQ.
Solid video! Carson bucket of ribs tips is the way to go, and their pork chop is thicccc. Going to try Lilly’s tri-tip, also found it while serving in San Diego.
Highly recommend the turkey at Green Street Meats too. I’ll usually also be eating brisket and hot links there so it’s nice change of pace after those fattier meats.
That brisket at Smoque looked dried, fried and laid to the side. Watching Joe bend the brisket back and forth without falling apart tells me all I need to know. No rubber brisket here, man!
When you think about it, it's not all that surprising that Chicago would be a BBQ hot spot because it's in the heart of the Midwest and remember it used to be a huge beef distribution center with the meat packing plants.
Hog Wild in Midlothian ExSenators in Markham are more gritty, real and more authentic representations of REAL Chicago BBQ. The places you visited I'm sure were good. However they seemed safe. You have to go deep into the SouthSide neighborhoods to get the best Chicago BBQ.
Hecky's sauce is amazing. It also has this weird property where the sauce straight out of the jar tastes completely different than if you baste it on and let it tack up.
Anyone wondering they ordered " The Mutt " at Hecky's. It used to be better around 6 years ago but I still stop in for fries covered in BBQ when out there
Too bad Uncle J's isn't around anymore. Hecky's and Lem's were OK, but Uncle J's rib tips and links were amazing. Sauce on the side always though... lol
No I-57 y’all tripping, what do look through google, all those barbecue joints y’all went I wouldn’t take my enemy to. I-57 you better call your order in and you still might have to wait an hour or 2. But I get it safe place safe space
Aquarium style BBQ is literally unique to Chicago and no one talks about it because of terminally online northsiders. Go to the south side.
Description
No bulletproof glass, not a Chicago barbecue place.

The very first place they went had aquarium smokers.
Leon’s on Archer, rib tips BOMB!!!
Leon’s is one of Chicago’s Hidden gem. The hot BBQ sauce on the chicken is 🔥 (never on the side, on it tastes much better)
Leon’s BBQ!! On 79th and Stony was a great spot now it’s located on 106th
All the best barbecue spots in Chicago are in places where you feel your life is slightly in danger. Come to the South, and West side.
