    Although to fit you might have to change Captain America into Captain Neverwinter, I think this is a great way to pull off another marvel build in Dungeons & Dragons. Also if you put him in the right party, you can pretty easily pull off over 176 damage just on your turn, even without any sort of critical hit or Max dice rolled.

      One problem with that is it doesn't return to you. It just floats in the air until the next round. But I do like the out of box thinking. Personally, I like the catapult spell for these types of returning weapons, along with EK's weapon bond. Like Thor's hammer. True, you need some way to mitigate damage to the thrown weapon or eventually the shield will break, and you need the shield to be classified as a weapon (a bashing shield?) It works better with Thor. If you're going to homebrew a magic shield, make it both throwing and returning.

    I have done a Captain America build that I THINK generally gets the feeling of Captain America, but admittedly it requires some reflavoring (not homebrewing, just reflavoring) and some creativity to avoid being a MAD build.
    So, like you, I had him be a Variant Human with the Soldier for his Background and Shield Master for my free Feat. But as far as classes go, I went with 8 Battle Master Fighter/4 Hexblade Warlock/8 Oath of Glory Paladin. Starting Stats (with those free +1s) were 13 STR 13 DEX 14 CON 8 INT 10 WIS 16 CHA. By the end, final stats were 14 STR 14 DEX 14 CON 8 INT 10 WIS 20 CHA. I used Athlete and Resilient (DEX) to round up the STR and DEX. I went for Hexblade so I could use CHA for attacking and spellcasting, seeing it as the super soldier serum, and reflavored Eldritch Blast as the shield throw given its force damage. Then I had the Tough Feat to bump up his HP along with Inspiring Leader to give that whole “AVENGERS, ASSEMBLE!” feel. Plus, with a Light Hammer as my Hex Weapon, figure that works when he has Mjolnir and I can get some lightning spells like Lightning Lure and Witch Bolt from Warlock plus Divine Smite to simulate strikes with Mjolnir. And then finally the Paladin Auras for Cap’s morale boosting abilities. Then I figure you can take some of the more supportive Combat Manuevers and ones that can be added to skill checks to make up for Cap’s lower INT and WIS. Like I said, it’s a bit all over the place, and requires some creative thinking, but in the end gives you almost everything Cap gets

    • @dndbuilds
      @dndbuilds  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It is definitely a more complicated way to build Captain America, but I really like the overall way that you built it out, especially using Eldritch blast in place of shield throws I think that was really good idea. Especially since in D&D it takes an action to equip or unequip your shield, and that is a little rough to deal with when the character focuses so much on throwing that shield.

    You need a shield that acts like a Dwarven Thrower when thrown. DT is very rare. Just make it Legendary. When you're holding it it's a +3 Shield, when you throw it it has the DT thrown properties. Alternatively you could have it be a Defender, gaining it's full +3 to AC when held, acts as a DT when thrown. It would actually be a cool item on its own, but something like this is ideal for Cap.

  • @couver73
    @couver73 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    If it weren't for the fact that you technically can't apply an artificer's weapon infusions on improvised weapons, I'd be down for that Returning Weapon idea. I also can't imagine that Captain America would have at least some maneuvers. With how he fights, he seems to trip people up all the time, among other things. It doesn't help that there's like two Martial Archetypes that let you naturally gain two fighting styles without investing in a feat? Otherwise, I would have found a way to get Superior Technique and Martial Adept.

    • @dndbuilds
      @dndbuilds  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I was definitely tempted to grab Martial adept, so I wouldn't be surprised if anybody else tried to use this build if they made that little tweak

  • @Comicsluvr
    @Comicsluvr ปีที่แล้ว

    This is surprisingly good. With a +3 shield, your defenses are good. If your DM allows the same bonus to hit and for damage, you're doing 1D8 (not bad) + 8 (really good). So, your top-end damage isn't the best but your average is nice and you don't have to worry about the occasional 1. It's a shame that the basic Monk class is so restricted because Flurry of Blows seems like it would fit a melee Cap very well.

    I think this nails the skills and abilities really well. Banneret is the perfect choice. And you convinced me that Fighter makes more sense than Paladin (though I wouldn't mind seeing an alternate attempt at that).
    My only quibble is with stats. I don't think Cap should be that high in the physical stats. Traditionally in comics, he's considered above peak human, but not on par with mutants, Asgardians, magical beings, etc. To me, if think of Thor as a 20 STR, then Cap can't be a 20. I would put Cap's max stats at something like 16 STR, 18 DEX, 18 CON, 10 INT, 8 WIS, 12 CHA. I would also treat the armor as light armor -- yes, he's technically wearing scale in the comics, but in the context of Marvel technology, its really more analogous to leather in the DnD world.
    Cool video. I haven't played RPGs in a long time, but somehow this tapped my interest. I'm going to check out some of your others.

    • @dndbuilds
      @dndbuilds  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah I can agree on the stats front, only issue is that stats benefit both your chance to hit, and how hard you hit, so I feel like his accuracy is top notch even if he's not as strong as other Mutants and Thor. Although with that stat spread, we could still dump a few more areas, and REALLY go wild with the Feats, which would have been plenty of fun.
      Glad I could peak your interest, I just like doing plenty of DnD related stuff, so I'm happy I can share that with others.

      @getschwifty5537 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      To be fair, I'm not sure if PC physicals really scale to be *too* crazy even at max ability scores, especially not Marvel crazy. For instance you can never *really* make a PC Hulk for instance because a movies accurate Hulk should be like a Tarrasque on steroids at bare minimum (and then comics Hulk would be BEYOND unobtainable). So imo if we're factoring like the lifting/carrying from just Strength score, technically even a 20 STR doesn't even suffice to match MCU Cap's strength. 600lbs lifting vs him apparently being able to lift upwards to 10 tons (20,000 lbs) in the movies. Not even close. (Also in regards to peak human stats, means at bare minimum, comics Cap should probably match Benedikt Magnússon who breached 1,000lbs)

      @@getschwifty5537 This is a good point. I agree that a lot of comic book characters would be more demi-gods in a DnD context. But I brought up Thor because he did another video on a Thor build.

    I agree and the only way I would make it different, was if the DM is really working with you and allow the shield to count either as a weapon with the thrown property via Tavern Brawler, or you choose Monk (since Captain America is not THAT strong and fights with his agility, like a Monk or someone with a finesse weapon) and the DM allows you to have it be a monk weapon (via Kensei Weapon) and choose if for both the weapon choices, once as melee and once as ranged (which means you even give up the choice of another weapon, as a flavor). Since Captain America in the comics works as a comic book artist/illustrator, the Way of the Brush feature also works well. It does not fit very well to his character, but with a two level dip into Artificer he can infuse his own shield, because another Artificer might need that infusion, rendering the shield without it less useful. Since it is enough to take 6 levels in Monk (because the feature Sharpen the Blade at level 11 does not work with a magic weapon with an attack and damage bonus, which a shield infused with Returning Weapon will be), you still have 12-14 levels to put into Fighter. I know that will f*** up the ability scores (because of the needed Wisdom) and make Unarmored Defense worthless, but hey, I just wanted something different (even though, if the DM would deem the shield to be ok as a finesse weapon, everything would be much easier).

      Jane Foster.
      Spiderman looks natural, but a drawn character in the middle of live action looks weird.

      @@gabrielmarques5257 yeah I actually threw one onto the character sheet that I posted on my patreon, because I realized I didn't add it into the video, I also threw in an additional language since I had forgotten that as well.

      Avocado - 1 hp, randomly has either 16 AC or 8 AC depending on Ripeness. But it's impossible to tell whether or not it's ripe until an attack roll has been made on it.

    This goes a little to much into his combat. Captain is THE captain when it comes to battle and strategy even Ironman will throw away his arrogance while in battle because he knows captain is the best at what he does. so dumping his mental stats doesn't make sense

    • @dndbuilds
      @dndbuilds  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I know I felt rough dumping some of the mental stuff, but there's only so many points to go around with standard point buy in 5th edition

    These builds suck but fun stuff

    • @dndbuilds
      @dndbuilds  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's very rare that optimize builds wind up being super fun if you're not in a party that's filled with other optimized builds, so something more like this where you're just playing towards the theme of the character can often be a bit more of an enjoyable character to play

    The charisma dumping makes 0 sense that should be his highest stat

    • @dndbuilds
      @dndbuilds  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Well I made some reasoning for it, that he doesn't really know how to use his charisma, but I know he is charismatic, and really there's only so many points to go around with standard point buy, so something's gotta give.
