    The only reason to buy Crown is for the bag so you can store your Dungeons & Dragons dice.

      how many D&D dice did you have that necessitated a crown royal bag?

    • @Mercutio01
      @Mercutio01 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Right now? Not many. But I've bought the Chessex Pound O' Dice in the past, and I'm far from alone in that. A lot of D&D gamers use Crown Royal bags for dice bags. It's been a thing since at least the 80s, and likely mid-to-late 70s when roleplaying games took off. www.amazon.com/Chessex-001LBCHX-Pound-O-Dice/dp/B008C0KXYS

    I worked in bars up in Winnipeg for many years, and this is my most memorable Crown story. On the morning of 9/11, I was getting up to meet all the bar guys for a bus heading to a staff golf tournament at a course then called Pelican Beach on the shore of Lake Winnipeg. We all were able to see video of the aftermath of the first plane hitting the towers, and we got patchy info on the radio on our drive there. We went ahead with the tournament, but it was a pretty somber day. I’ll never forget looking across the water to the steady rise of smoke from the distillery where they make Crown.
    We worked in a big nigtclub that had a 1000 person capacity, and we ran 19 Doormen on the weekends. About half of the guys were infantry for the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry, which moved their Base out of Winnipeg to Shilo a couple of years later...
    Fast forward a year or 2, and most of the guys were serving in Afghanistan, one who came back a quadriplegic..
    I’ve done a fair bit of traveling since then, and I’ve yet to be in a bar or lounge that didn’t have a bottle of Crown on the shelf. I always have one, and remember that day and those guys.
    Sorry for the ramble (oh man, I just apologized!)

    This video pretty much sums up my last Saturday. Hanging with some buddies at my place, one of them brings a bottle of crown, I bust out a bottle beam we are all having a good time. Now I had never had crown before this, but obviously the hype was real because it's crown, one of the biggest names of whiskey in pop culture. I take a sniff, not bad, take my first sip, ok that's kinda sweet, second sip, yeap that's all there is. I wouldn't say no if someone offered me a glass, but I think you guys hit the nail on the head, whiskey for non whiskey drinkers.

    I started drinking whiskey by drinking scotch. Honestly, I thought it was cool to drink, and I wanted to drink it. I drank a lot of Glen's, but the Crown bottle and bag looked so cool, I had to try it. I definitely know what you guys mean when you're talking about how Crown being light and sweet and easy and "the whiskey people who don't like whiskey drink."
    Sometimes I just need that easy, sweet drink though. I bet it would make a good mixer to other whiskeys...
    Also, for the price and presentation, it makes a great gift!

    I have a bottle of Crown from 1965, the first year that it was imported into the United States. It has never been opened and still has the stamp on the cap. I found it in my dad's liquor cabinet as we were getting ready to sell my parent's house. I wrote Crown about it and they thought that it was pretty cool to have it after all these years. I rarely, if ever, drink Crown and it will always remain unopened on the top shelf of my bar. As far as other Canadian Whiskeys go, I have Seagram's VO Gold, which isn't too bad. I keep it around for my friends who like that type of whiskey. It is what it is, I guess.

    Crown was always my go-to before I started watching y'all. I just always enjoyed sipping on it neat or on the rocks. That was before I even knew to look for flavors and such, I was just trying to find a whiskey that I could easily sip all night and found Crown to be the best at that. I guess just as you explain, it's not challenging. Now I've opened myself up more to tasting the complexities and have been drinking less Canadian whiskey.

    Hey guys, I honestly just discovered your channel this week. Love it and the bourbonite channel. I wouldn't consider myself a whiskey/bourbon aficionado, I have quite a few in my circles and really do appreciate good whiskeys and bourbons (my staples at bars being the Four Roses SB, Hibiki, Glenfiddich, Glenlivet, etc.). I have a small collection of quality whiskeys at home and am eyeing a Pappy that I want. But I will honestly admit, in terms of sheer volume, I purchase Crown Royal far and away more than anything else and let me tell you why.
    I don't (hardly) drink beer anymore. I don't drink wine anymore. If I want to get myself in the range of tipsy to drunk, beer and wine don't cut it, it just makes me feel full and bloated. I also don't like shooting vodka or tequila to try to get drunk either. Quality whiskeys/bourbons, shouldn't be indiscriminately shot like you were at a college house party. So, if I'm trying to get myself in that tipsy+ range on a normal quiet evening at home, I find that 3 double crown and cokes does the trick just nicely. And at Costco at typically $28 for 1.75 L (and just today I saw it for the lowest price I've ever seen, $22.50 each if you buy 2 or more) it is amazingly cost effective.
    I agree, it's not something I would ever savor or drink neat, but because it's sweet, blends super nicely with coke (but not diet coke.... ugh), and gets the job pleasantly done.... yeah, it's what I tend to buy and drink the most of. Let's just call it the burger and fries (or the chicken chow mein because I'm asian) of my drinking life. It's the everyday drink. I'll go to a nice sit-down restaurant once or twice a week and splurge at a Michellin star restaurant every so often, I suppose that's the same philosophy that makes Crown and coke my everyday drink.
    I have a lot more of your channels to get through, but I'm really enjoying it and looking forward to trying some of your selections.

The problem with crown is I've been drinking Woodford Reserve Rye, Bulleit, and Nikka (blends). My after dinner go to's are Bowmore 15, Glenmorangie 14, Dalmore 12, and Balvenie 14 Carribean, and I have a few good Islay's. As you say - Crown is a mixer. Just too boring to be left to itself. If you have to Crown, then Crown Reserve is a better option. It is still kind of like drinking alcoholic maple syrup, but it actually has some character to it. Supposedly it comes from older cask whiskey instead of the babies that make up the standard Crown. It is a good introductory whiskey, and costs about the same as normal Crown.

    Hurricane 5 by Caldera, to be picky on the name. Just picked up a bottle on our annual beach party weekend near River John. That's where it works best, mixed with ginger while playing bocce balls on the sandbars at low tide and you don't mind spilling a little, or a lot. You probably don't want to move there with its incredibly high prices and low selection.

    When I was younger I'd buy cheap Canadian Whiskey like Seagram's 7, Canadian Mist, Canadian Club etc and mix it/do shots. My "treat yourself" fancy whiskey for special occasions was Crown Royal because it was "so smooth". I've since moved on to actually appreciating good whiskey and I haven't had Crown in years but I tried some tonight. It's SMOOTH alright--because there's NOTHING AT ALL going on with this whiskey! This is like the Busch Light of whiskey! Barely noticeable flavors, no after taste, no aroma, no profile, no....nothing! Such an eye opener drinking it now with some whiskey experience as opposed to when I was 24. Now I understand what people mean when they say it's "whiskey for people who don't like whiskey".

    so... what's the effect of adding water between distillations? is that causing the bland flavor profile of Crown Royal? I bought it on a whim because... I'd never had it, and the only Irish whiskey in stock at my closest liquor store was Jameson's and I wanted something to try. I did; and I won't hurry to replace this once it's gone. It's not offensive; it's just not affecting at all!

    The only other whisky I've had besides crown is really cheap stuff. Like... the CHEAPEST bottles I could find in the liquor store. Those reminded me more of nail polish remover and industrial cleaners than something you'd actually want to drink. Crown is leaps and bounds ahead of those. I'm sure its easy to shit on compared to top shelf really nice stuff but I like it.

    Another candid remark by Daniel. Cool. I bought a bottle of that Northern Harvest CR and I began to wonder what Murray's agenda is.

    • @timosborne5282
      @timosborne5282 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The thing with the Northern Harvest is that when I first had it shortly after it was first released, it was amazing. Deep and complex and unlike anything else. I had it again later after finishing that bottle and it was completely different. I don't know what happened, but everything after that first batch has been thoroughly mediocre. That said, there are a lot of wonderful Canadian whiskies, they're just only available in Canada. There's a peated whisky from a small distillery in the far north in the Yukon that I'm dying to try. I don't know why this is, but it's not just whisky. There are a number of craft gin producers too and of course a whole lot of craft beer. None of it is available outside Canada, and often also even outside the province its produced in.

    I think Wiser's, and their master distiller Don Livermore, are doing some interesting things, experimenting with limited releases (Dissertation, Last Barrels, Union 52) and their Pikes Creek and Lot 40 brands. For one of the largest operating distilleries in North America I think that is pretty great.

    Id say the major reason is the price of liqour in most canadian territories. I worked in a state agency liqour store in new hampshore for awhile and canadians would come down everydayyyyy to buy canadian whiskey because it cost literally 4 times more there. Or even cheap jim beam i was told could cost up to 100$ for a bottle that cost 24$ here

    Hey guys. I'm in the middle of working through all of your videos. I'm saving up a few questions for when I get to the end, but on the topic of this video, do you have any Forty Creek products in the vault? The standard issue Forty Creek Barrel Select is the thing that I keep on hand for if I want a drink that I don't care to contemplate deeply, but still enjoy. It's also inexpensive enough that I can put it out for company after I put away something more special.
    I'd be interested in seeing what you think of the Barrel Select, and also the Double Barrel Reserve. There are also some interesting special releases, but these two are readily available.

  • @503appie
    @503appie 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I heard they can add up to 1% of other ingredients to their whisky. That can be E150a (coloring) or even sugars.

    • @WhiskeyVault
      @WhiskeyVault  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Actually, if it's scotch, they can't add anything other than the E150 and water.

    • @503appie
      @503appie 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, with scotch they only allow E150a and water.
      I just now see I wrote whisky without the E. I meant to comment on the Canadian Crown Royal. I heard about the following rules in a review of ''Whisky in the 6'' a Canadian whisk(e)y reviewer.
      I couldn't find the exact video but I found an article that went slightly more in depth:
      www.seriouseats.com/2010/08/the-problem-with-canadian-whisky.html
      ''It's then blended with smaller amounts of lower-proof whiskies, and the distillers are allowed to add 9.09 percent of just about anything: rum, brandy, neutral spirits, caramel, or other types of flavoring.''
      Probably nothing to worry about, if the word got out crown royal is adding apple juice to their whisky it would hurt their brand quite a bit I imagine :p

    • @WhiskeyVault
      @WhiskeyVault  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, Canadian rules are completely different. The closest thing we have to it, is in the US, we can add a tiny percentage of flavorings and then mix straight whiskey and "neutral spirits"

    • @503appie
      @503appie 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Didn't know about those rules, thanks for the info! Quite a lot of differentiated rules for straight/sour mash/kentucky bourbons. And some distillers aren't even making bourbon but 'just' whisky in second fill casks.
      I would like to give Stranahan's Colorado Whiskey a try but it is hard to get here. But I'm quite spoiled with the pricing and distribution of whisk(e)y here in the Netherlands

    next time you come to Canada you have to try "fils du roy" rye whiskey called Appalaches. Its very hard to find since only 800bottles has been made in 2018 and i think you can only get them in New-Brunswick (maybe Quebec as well). But as always fils du roy has succeed in creating a great alcohol with awesome flavors. For only around 95$ cad it's definitely one of the best whiskey I've try (from the few since i'm quite a beginner in the whiskey game). i would send you a bottle if it was possible to ship alcohol across the border. But sadly i think you can't. Check them out they also have one of the best gin in the world which has won double gold medals in San-Francisco
