I feel Jim Beam is the foundation of my Bourbon (whiskey) experience. When someone says it's good for a Jim Beam product & then tell me Buffalo Trace is their go to bourbon, I feel they are not tasting the bourbon they are reading they label. I honestly don't feel like such a n00b now that I heard Daniel say he enjoys Jim Beam and that it's a damn fine whiskey. I love the stuff, if I'm stumped on what to buy, it's my go to, especially when I'm not trying to break the bank or if I'm on a budget that week. you can sip it or mix it, you can't go wrong. (it makes a damn fine whiskey sour in my opinion, if you're a mixed drink person)

When I graduated high school and drove to the beach with a couple of buddies, I was drunk on Jim Beam. When I tried to impress people, I showed them that I drank Jim Beam 7-Year-Old. Tonight I am drinking Jim Beam from a handle (well, from a glass that I poured from a handle)!
I watched this vid because I have always liked Beam and I have a sealed, unopened bottle of Jim Beam 200th Anniversary (1795-1995) 46% abv aged 75 months.

Gentlemen, since we are one the Jim Beam kick here, what about Devils Cut? It was my second whiskey after the regular Beam (White Label) when I was first cutting my teeth on whiskey and found it to be very enjoyable. I still keep a bottle in my collection even though I’ve moved on to better whiskeys. Also, I was disappointed when they stopped making Jim Beam “Choice” that one was great! Keep up the great videos I find them very informational! Love them! Cheers!
Greetings from Sweden Mr. Mooch & Mr. lvl 3. About 3-4 years ago I got my hands on a Glenfiddich 19 aged in Madeira casks and it was absolutely lovely. Have you had the opportunity to try it and or do you perhaps have it in your collection? It has been one of my favourites even though it's not an Islay. As a 10 year lad I was mixing Beam 7's for my parents and grandparents, of course would pour a cap full and make sure the Beam was acceptable for them to consume.
Jim Beam had a rickhouse fire. 175,000 barrels of bourbon burned. Their price was not affected, it was not a blip on their production. Thats how big Jim Beam is.

Hey guys, yesterday I managed to mooch a glass of Angel's Envy off my grandfather (with his permission this time, unlike my fathers blantons) and It was so good I think its the first whiskey I've tasted so far that I prefer on the rocks instead of with coke. I looked through your episodes and I couldn't seem to find one on it, would you guys mind reviewing it if you have any?
I prefer Jim Beam Black. Got it for $25, aged 8 years. It's super complex for the price, and I rather like that edge. Very spicy on the finish, sweet and malty up front.

Not that I would ever go out of my way to try this but I was thinking the next time Rex makes a Costco run to get a new pair of sunglasses maybe he can pick up some Kirkland Signature Small Batch Bourbon and some Kirkland Signautre 18-yr Old Speyside. I have a friend who only drinks Kirkland and I don't trust her reviews (she loves them). Just wondering what you two think. First of, I love this channel. I truly hope you guys go far. Second, a "simple" question. Czech Republic has some really lax laws when it comes to consumer brewing, so I can make my own mash and distil it, legally. We are allowed 30l of pure alcohol per household, per year (only paying half of the consumer tax on it). When making my own whisky, do I turn the barrels as it ages? Common sense says yes, but it doesn't feel right. I'd also appreciate if you could recommend a type of yeast for pure malt, there is just too many of them out there.
I wouldn't worry about needing to turn it in the really small barrels. Likely won't be in the barrel long enough to matter. There are so many good yeast options out there. Honestly, the best bet is to get a few and see how they compare. You could easily do 6 -10 batches with a 3 liter still and still not pass the legal limit by the time you finish second distillation runs and cuts.
Really like the channel guys, been drinking whisky/bourbon for the last few years and love trying new things and I would appreciate an opinion on the Jack Daniels single barrel rye. I enjoyed the Jim Beam rye but as the JD is twice the cost looking for some trusted reviews before stumping up the £50 Thanks guys and keep up the good work
Bought Four Roses Single Barrel as my first bourbon bottle and love it. I like the spice aspect to it being a rye drinker so I think I would be disappointed with the JB SB.
Drinking Jim Beam Bonded while watching this one. Wanted to see what you guys thought of Beam stuff. Pleasantly surprised. Beam bonded is rich syrupy goodness: Vanilla Ice Cream, maple syrup, cinnamon, barrel char, pancake breakfast... Yummy. White label has the same character to me, just watered down. I agree with what Daniel said about Beam white label. You guys should review the White and the Bonded sometime. See if you agree. It's classic Kentucky Straight Bourbon in all it's glory. Subbed!

so I had a guest that drank me out of Glenfiddich, over a few visits to my bar, and was dismayed that we were out. I then tried to poor him Stronachie 10 where he exclaimed it was too young and he only likes 18 year and older whiskys! I didn't have the heart to tell him that he was drinking, and raving about, a Glenfiddich 12. So I pointed him to some of our more premium Scotchs ie: Talisker distillers edition, Lagavulin distillers edition, Oban distillers edition again.... Octomore 6.1 so on... I was told they were all too peaty for him, Octomore(no shit), and he then suggested we get Bunnahabhain 18 for him. I then understood(after seeing your episode about said whisky) that he really didn't like peat. I agreed that I wish we had Bunnahabhain 18 but we didn't so instead I gave him the Classic Laddie from Bruichladdich and he loved it! So a question. For a scotch lover of this type what else could you recommend? To my understanding something in the speyside area may be what he is looking for, tho I will say I talked to him about both Dalmore and Mclachlan and he said they were both "overrated".
So, you implied something interesting. Distilling seems like you need to go balls to the wall, and not a recreational thing at all. What about aging whiskies in your own small barrels? Do you buy off the shelf? Do you stick to cheap or young whiskies? Are there risks?
I totally found some small (anywhere from 1-20 liter) barrels, and I think playing around with like 3 liters would be fun, not ridiculously expensive, not terribly space-hogging, etc. Looking forward to this discussion.

My wife is from SC. Palmetto trinkets show up all over my house. Never heard of a palmetto barrel being used. I think we recently shot an episode where a swedish wood was used. I remember it being pretty sweet, smooth, with some unique subtleties floating through the flavors.
We'll have to get some South Carolina whisky in the vault. I'm with Rex on the wood solution. The only truly unique one I've heard was the Japanese Mizunara.

I had the privilege to go to Scotland for my honeymoon and it was the first time I heard the concept of "Angels' Share". I found it to be a fun and interesting concept and would love to hear you explain that concept. Also, are the angels in america more drunk, i mean have more whiskey because of the warmer climate?
Yes! and the climate absolutely affect the Angel share. specifically it affects whether water or alcohol evaporates first. Some regions have proof drop over time, while hotter climates seem to have proof increase over time. In America, the angel share is often lower just because we can't keep it in the barrel as long without it getting over-oaked. On the other hand, I've seen some barrels where the angels got really greedy, and it seems to be in the really hot climates.
So the banana scent is common in bourbons. Have you guys ever encountered that banana vibe in a rye? I have a bottle of Crown Royal Northern Harvest and I've always got strong banana on the nose from it.
Daniel and Rex, how about a Sommelier vs Mooch regional whisky battle? You both choose your favorites from each of the four most known regions. Scotland, Ireland, USA and Japan. Taste them and see who chose best?
o.k. Funny that I am watching this episode, as last night I tried Amrut Fusion for the first time. Meh, the nose was great lots of honey and pear to me. Then I tasted it and it was bandaid all the way through, numbed my tongue. Was trying to be more worldly but only succeeded in crossing India off my list. Going to Taiwan next.

With the summer upcoming I am making my 4th Bourbon Trail tour in Kentucky. I usually do the big guys and end with my favorite Buffalo Trace (great tour, generous samples). Anything I may be missing?
The short version is that the chemicals responsible for what we call "cherry" and "caramel" are also a product of the chemical reactions between grain alcohol and barrels. That is a huge issue in my mind. That some customers still look at a product such as Bookers and tell you that they love Jim Beam and won't touch anything other than their Jim Beam because it doesn't have that name on the label. Sometimes I feel companies brand their mainstay products too deeply!! I just want to tell people(when I'm working) to branch out of your comfort zone and live a little.
Best of the jim beams in my opinion . I don't know why there are so many variations if their cheaper stuff becait's not any good. This stuff though is good!
I was unaware you could make banana smells in whiskey, the chemist part of me asks does the banana go away when you add a few drops viniger (acid) (ie did you make banana ester chemically)
What's funny is that while I live in Colombia, (Much like you'd stated about China) there's a lot of beers made here... but no whiskeys. Everyone I ask always tells me that Old Parr is "Colombian Whiskey" and I'd never heard of it until moving here. Alas, as anyone reading this probably knows, it's actually a Scotch.
Jack daniels old no.7 is one of the biggest culprits of banana whiskey the legacy number 3 is my go to for jack daniels though im not much of a jack guy anymore since i decided to elevate my pallet
Hay Guys where I'm not sure how to email you or ask that you review Bain's Cape Mountain whisky, this is South Africa's first ever single grain whisky, Bain's is matured in first fill bourbon casks for an initial three years before spending a further two years in fresh first fill bourbon casks! For me it's amazing and the price is very affordable, It's even won the World's Best Grain Whisky award.
Closest to China, is Taiwan and they have Kavalan, a whisky which has not been mentioned in the Vault before. Edit: I was wrong! it has been mentioned. But Rex hasn't mooched on it yet.
EW is my go to. I want to try their single barrel next. Right now I’m drinking the JBSB and LOVE IT! But it was on sale, otherwise the price point is too high for me.
Jim Beam is very underrated here is South Africa.. like, I've never seen it in a pub/bar/restaurant, and when i ask for it, no one knows about it... and it's a shame, because I prefer it above Jack Daniel's, aaand it's way cheaper
speaking as someone who lives in china, whiskey has caught on here some, but most Chinese still drink baijiu. if they do drink whiskey, almost for sure it will be scotch.
I can home from Afghanistan in 2012 after spending 3.5 years there and in Iraq so for a 4-5 year period I didn't drink to much. two days later was my 10yr high school reunion they had beam on special for 2 bucks I had 11 and was drunk off my ass for 22 bucks. beam was also my first whisky the one I mentioned drinking at 4 in a previous comment.
I have a distillery near me called SILO and when I tasted there bourbon I got that bannana flavor and it made me want to punch a midget. I hate bananas and have never experienced that not I’m a whiskey before and I asked the proprietor what the hell was in it and she had no explanation for the flavor but only could tell me it was there. Glad to know why now.
What is the most expensive whisk(e)y and the best whisk(e)y in the vault ,including your office? I understand that they are potentially completely different.

I have quickly accumulated a plethora of questions, so I’m going to fire them off and hope that you guys pick up AT LEAST one of them (although I dare you to tackle the entire bull): ~Have you guys heard of and/or tried the new Norlan glasses (norlanglass.com/)? I see you guys consistently use the quintessential Glencairn glasses, but this kickstarter company is slotted to give the Glencairns a run for their money. I would love to see you guys do a familiar whisky next to a new whisky in BOTH glasses! This seems right up your alley. If they win you over, or even if they don’t, send me the pair you use (that was for the mooch). ~Can we get an episode in your office? You indicated that you have about 40 additional whiskies in your office, and I’d love to see what that/they look like. What is the whisk(ey) that you drink the most, perhaps daily/weekly? What is the bottle that you always have on hand, both at home and in the office, the one that you immediately replace even BEFORE you run out? ~When reviewing the Rare Fitz., you went off screen to get a vile from “under lock and key.” Do you keep rare(r) whiskies in there? Just a question, i would wanna serve whiskey to a lot of people at a celebration party... Im thinking of either johnnie walker red label, jim beam white, or the jack daniels... (the jim bean white is the cheapest here where I live at $10, the other JW is $17, and the jack is $24) so what would be a good choice? Thanks! Im thinking jim beam as the cheapest to have more bottles to serve... But im also worried about if it would be a crowdpleaser... Thanks!

so I had a guest that drank me out of Glenfiddich, over a few visits to my bar, and was dismayed that we were out. I then tried to poor him Stronachie 10 where he exclaimed it was too young and he only likes 18 year and older whiskys! I didn't have the heart to tell him that he was drinking, and raving about, a Glenfiddich 12. So I pointed him to some of our more premium Scotchs ie: Talisker distillers edition, Lagavulin distillers edition, Oban distillers edition again.... Octomore 6.1 so on... I was told they were all too peaty for him, Octomore(no shit), and he then suggested we get Bunnahabhain 18 for him. I then understood(after seeing your episode about said whisky) that he really didn't like peat. I agreed that I wish we had Bunnahabhain 18 but we didn't so instead I gave him the Classic Laddie from Bruichladdich and he loved it! So a question. For a scotch lover of this type what else could you recommend? To my understanding something in the speyside area may be what he is looking for, tho I will say I talked to him about both Dalmore and Mclachlan and he said they were both "overrated".

What about aging whiskies in your own small barrels? Do you buy off the shelf? Do you stick to cheap or young whiskies? Are there risks?

I totally found some small (anywhere from 1-20 liter) barrels, and I think playing around with like 3 liters would be fun, not ridiculously expensive, not terribly space-hogging, etc.

Hey guys. I'm new to the channel, loving the entertainment and knowledge y'all are bringing to reviews! I'm from South Carolina and have always thought it would be cool to age whiskey in a palmetto tree barrel. What are your thoughts on using unusual woods?
My wife is from SC. Palmetto trinkets show up all over my house. Never heard of a palmetto barrel being used. I think we recently shot an episode where a swedish wood was used. I remember it being pretty sweet, smooth, with some unique subtleties floating through the flavors.
We'll have to get some South Carolina whisky in the vault. I'm with Rex on the wood solution. The only truly unique one I've heard was the Japanese Mizunara.
You gotta try Paul John, it's the next best thing since Amrut (personally not a big fan of Amrut). Love your channel, great chemistry guys.
I'll have to see if we can track it down! I don't really like the base level Amrut, but the fusion is pretty damn good.

Can you enlighten me on some bourbons that smell/taste like banana? I got banana at a casino recently when I had Jack Daniel's there. I actually enjoyed it (first time liking Jack), and would like some more :D
I had the privilege to go to Scotland for my honeymoon and it was the first time I heard the concept of "Angels' Share". I found it to be a fun and interesting concept and would love to hear you explain that concept. Also, are the angels in america more drunk, i mean have more whiskey because of the warmer climate?
Yes! and the climate absolutely affect the Angel share. specifically it affects whether water or alcohol evaporates first. Some regions have proof drop over time, while hotter climates seem to have proof increase over time.
In America, the angel share is often lower just because we can't keep it in the barrel as long without it getting over-oaked. On the other hand, I've seen some barrels where the angels got really greedy, and it seems to be in the really hot climates.
So the banana scent is common in bourbons. Have you guys ever encountered that banana vibe in a rye? I have a bottle of Crown Royal Northern Harvest and I've always got strong banana on the nose from it.
Not yet! I never found that in the harvest rye, but I'm going to go looking for it now!
Daniel and Rex, how about a Sommelier vs Mooch regional whisky battle? You both choose your favorites from each of the four most known regions. Scotland, Ireland, USA and Japan. Taste them and see who chose best?
And if you're so inclined, send me the Whiskies that "lose" the battles?

o.k. Funny that I am watching this episode, as last night I tried Amrut Fusion for the first time. Meh, the nose was great lots of honey and pear to me. Then I tasted it and it was bandaid all the way through, numbed my tongue. Was trying to be more worldly but only succeeded in crossing India off my list. Going to Taiwan next.

I really love a good whisky, but outside of that I drink lots of espresso with lime. Are there any whiskys that come to mind with that kind of flavor profile? If not there's always Monkey Shoulder, etc.
With the summer upcoming I am making my 4th Bourbon Trail tour in Kentucky. I usually do the big guys and end with my favorite Buffalo Trace (great tour, generous samples). Anything I may be missing?

so I've recently been curious and too lazy to research about how flavors like cherry and caramel and other things get into whiskeys. any help?
The short version is that the chemicals responsible for what we call "cherry" and "caramel" are also a product of the chemical reactions between grain alcohol and barrels. So you get some of the same taste markers.

That is a huge issue in my mind. That some customers still look at a product such as Bookers and tell you that they love Jim Beam and won't touch anything other than their Jim Beam because it doesn't have that name on the label. Sometimes I feel companies brand their mainstay products too deeply!! I just want to tell people(when I'm working) to branch out of your comfort zone and live a little.
Yeah, there are some people that just aren't ready to try things. Too bad, but at least there's more of the unique stuff for the rest of us ;-)

Best of the jim beams in my opinion . I don't know why there are so many variations if their cheaper stuff becait's not any good. This stuff though is good!
I was unaware you could make banana smells in whiskey, the chemist part of me asks does the banana go away when you add a few drops viniger (acid) (ie did you make banana ester chemically)
I need to try this. I aged a moonshine from Missouri in 5L new oak barrels for 4 months. What came out tasted like banana bread whiskey. It was wild.

What's funny is that while I live in Colombia, (Much like you'd stated about China) there's a lot of beers made here... but no whiskeys. Everyone I ask always tells me that Old Parr is "Colombian Whiskey" and I'd never heard of it until moving here. Alas, as anyone reading this probably knows, it's actually a Scotch.

Jack daniels old no.7 is one of the biggest culprits of banana whiskey the legacy number 3 is my go to for jack daniels though im not much of a jack guy anymore since i decided to elevate my pallet
Hay Guys where I'm not sure how to email you or ask that you review Bain's Cape Mountain whisky, this is South Africa's first ever single grain whisky, Bain's is matured in first fill bourbon casks for an initial three years before spending a further two years in fresh first fill bourbon casks!
For me it's amazing and the price is very affordable, It's even won the World's Best Grain Whisky award.
Closest to China, is Taiwan and they have Kavalan, a whisky which has not been mentioned in the Vault before.

Jim Beam is very underrated here is South Africa.. like, I've never seen it in a pub/bar/restaurant, and when i ask for it, no one knows about it... and it's a shame, because I prefer it above Jack Daniel's, aaand it's way cheaper

I can home from Afghanistan in 2012 after spending 3.5 years there and in Iraq so for a 4-5 year period I didn't drink to much. two days later was my 10yr high school reunion they had beam on special for 2 bucks I had 11 and was drunk off my ass for 22 bucks. beam was also my first whisky the one I mentioned drinking at 4 in a previous comment.
Well that's one way to get started! And there's never a bad time to have some Beam.
I have a distillery near me called SILO and when I tasted there bourbon I got that bannana flavor and it made me want to punch a midget. I hate bananas and have never experienced that not I’m a whiskey before and I asked the proprietor what the hell was in it and she had no explanation for the flavor but only could tell me it was there. Glad to know why now.
Jim beam from what I saw on a tour video of the facility makes knob creek and at the least, bottles makers mark(I still think they make it).

Catching up to you live from Illinois. I just found your channel this week (while teaching summer school!), and like so many other viewers I am hooked, hooked, hooked. I had received a bottle of Glenmorangie Quinta Ruban for Christmas 2 years ago and had been waiting open it for a special occasion. I watched your Ruban review yesterday, then later that day found out the sex of my unborn child (it’s a boy!), and that evening finally broke the seal on that amazing Whisky! It was an amazing day.
I have quickly accumulated a plethora of questions, so I’m going to fire them off and hope that you guys pick up AT LEAST one of them (although I dare you to tackle the entire bull):
~Have you guys heard of and/or tried the new Norlan glasses (norlanglass.com/)? I see you guys consistently use the quintessential Glencairn glasses, but this kickstarter company is slotted to give the Glencairns a run for their money. I would love to see you guys do a familiar whisky next to a new whisky in BOTH glasses! This seems right up your alley. If they win you over, or even if they don’t, send me the pair you use (that was for the mooch).
~Can we get an episode in your office? You indicated that you have about 40 additional whiskies in your office, and I’d love to see what that/they look like. What is the whisk(ey) that you drink the most, perhaps daily/weekly? What is the bottle that you always have on hand, both at home and in the office, the one that you immediately replace even BEFORE you run out?
~When reviewing the Rare Fitz., you went off screen to get a vile from “under lock and key.” Do you keep rare(r) whiskies in there? If so, can viewers get a shot of “the good stuff”? Perhaps a whisk(e)y tour during a review (pan left)?
~Daniel, as a Scotch man (“scotch is my home territory”), what are your thoughts on Aberlour? Have you ever tried any of those Scotches? If not, perhaps that can be a future episode. I’d love to see you try their line, multiple together if you had access to them, but specifically their A’BUNADH. You like aggressive scotches, so consider this a welcomed challenge!
~Lastly, and purely just for fun, what are some of the best whiskies for the absolute lowest price tag?
