- Firing up this 1984 Peterbilt 359 and finding out why it was parked. We knew it was hurt to begin with, before the video we drained 3+ gallons of coolant out of the oil pan. The story we got was " it just shut off going down the road".

This truck would occasionally pick up where I used to work (Universal Forest Products in Belchertown MA).. I learned to drive in a 1982 359 Pete, so I’ve always had a thing for them. I loved seeing this truck. Glad that I found it by chance here on TH-cam. Thanks for saving it!
I tell you what the sound of that turbo spool'n in the valley of that Detroit diesel will NEVER get old to me!
I used to see this truck on Route 2 for years. Last time I saw it, it was sitting on Route 10 going towards Easthampton. Glad to see it running!
25 years from now, I want to see a 2021 peterbilt start and run after sitting for so many years.
I bet it doesn’t start and I also bet this old beast could get parked and shit off today. Then started 25 years from now.

I randomly clicked on one of your videos, I’m glad I did because it brought me to this video afterwards… I grew up near the farm where that Peterbilt came from when I was a kid I remember when it was brand new… Paul had straight pipes on it for the longest time and it sounded so good it was loud AF… it was always cool peddling my bike down the road and having that rig passing by... it Reminded me of The joker rig on the movie Maximum Overdrive.. I would love to see that on the road again?! 👍🏼

I recall seeing the old "X-rated Boogey Man" running across the Mass Turnpike...definitely knew it was Detroit powered...
The memories of that flat top 359. I could blindside by leaning over and looking out the passenger window. Definitely a one size fits all truck. LOL
catliftresearch I used to open the sleeper door to blindside in !!! Or like you said sit in the passenger seat !! Those were the good old days!!!

Ouch. Yeah she was hurt pretty bad. Can't wait till he gets the new engine in her. An old Pete and a detroit are a good combination. Just something not as common. Which is why I like them.

How things come full circle. When I was a kid just starting I couldn’t wait to get in a tractor with a/c and power steering and all that bullshit. Today 36 years later I’d look forward to driving something like this.
I’m with you. No power steering no a/c just gimme straight stacks a Jake and a dirty steering wheel and oh yes. A muddy yard with crazy employees.

There was also an edition of it called OO-92 it was black , super engine
Those were a marketing gimmick with a nice warranty. Had none of the silver series improvements.

I agree, it would have been easier if they had another truck, air it up and pull start it. Pull starting would have been much easier on the starter plus the engine would have been turning a lot faster than the starter could.
I pull started an International with a 350 Cummins in 1983 (The international was a 1974) it was12 degrees out the truck had been setting for 3 days. Pulled it about 100 yards before it started but it was a lot easier on the engine, starter, batteries, and wires. If you don't have another truck you do what you gotta do.
Yeah that thing was begging for mercy.

I don’t use either when I need to get any diesel started winded bottle with a little gas diesel mix works great and much safer the engine

@@moparproud3978 no not really done engines just don't start in cold weather or for say performance diesels compression is so low they won't start with out.
@@giauqueford This isn’t a sled puller with lowered compression. It’s an engine with issues. Again, I will reiterate, a Diesel engine that needs ether, has issues. It’s not because they start hard in the cold. It’s not because they’ve got lowered compression, it’s not because it gives you the feel goods, any Diesel engine that needs ether is a shit box. Again, we’re not discussing sled pullers with lowered compression. That’s a simple fact beyond contestation.

I NOTICED FLUID LEAKING FROM THE BACK PART OF ENGINE. IT WAS LANDING ON THE BLUE TARP THAT YOU HAVE UNDER IT.

@@Ol2Stroker Yeha it sounded like that one worn out engine... Buut where there's 1 Detroit there's usually a spare Detroit to put under the hood :) Soo it's still gonna be a beast of a truck :)

Probably with some machine work but not worth the effort imo. Plenty of better ones out there.
Am I the only one that noticed the trans fluid just pouring out by the bell housing?,you can only see it briefly but hard to miss a puddle of dark red fluid

You are going too do one or two things all that either put it too sleep or stretch those head bolts some much you will see the head jumping up and down on the block ?
The truck might have a bad starter or injector 🤔🤔🤔
Let’s just load up that Detroit up with as much either as possible and A-blow the engine sky high. B-you have a runaway engine and it blows up or throws a rod out the side of the engine block.

He unloaded like 12 cans into some random junk detroit and it took forever to blow, people just dont fuckiing get it that ether does not contain the oxygen to fucking blow shit up like crazy, yes it can happen, but you better have lots of oxygen and loaded with ether. Most of the time ether just can choke it out and prevent it from starting cuz it displaces too much fucking oxygen! Its a simple fact, get a can and spray it the fuck into a weedwacker, lawnmower or something and watch it rev up, then slowly choke out as you keep spraying, and when you let off itll rev up really high and then go back to normal.
Dog bone heads for strength for turbo ... i never under stood why they never came out with a better solution to seal heads than perimeters ring for head gasket

I had a 8V-92TA in my 1980 KW. 500k miles is about all you can expect from an in frame overhaul.
How long had it been sitting before you all got it started using a whole can of starting fluid and then reving the shit out of the motor not to smart to do to any motor especially an old dietroit just saying fellas best of luck to yall
From what I can tell someone else already fucked up that Detroit, might as well get it running one last time before a rebuild 🤷

Sure sounded like it hydro locked and that's why it died and was cranking really slow and hard. 215 degrees is hot for a Detroit. That's the danger zone for sure.
This thing spun a bearing thats why it shut off this time and before we got it. We new it was pooched just wanted to see if shed go.
The 92's were cool but could not run with the 1693 TA cats.

It's on a clutch. Clutch might be seized. Sometimes they turn a little bit when not engaged.

No this is a silver 92.

Double o 92 was just a green 92 with an extended warranty and a buncha marketing hype. The silvers had over 21 updates to the engine for reliability as the green 92s almost put Detroit under.

should have done a little bit of checking the health of the motor out before spraying a case of starting fluid through if and reving the hell out of her I would have pulled the valve covers and the pan before I tried anything nice trick though !!
Install some new fuel filters primed with diesel. Your going to burn your injectors.
Can't drive these in California anymore 😂. Unless some magical DFT and DPF conversion makes them legal.
