I drove a company Pete 359 in the 80’s that had a 3408 with a 6x4 air shift brownie here in Alaska going up and down the Haul Road. The same company who’s owner believed in Power! He had a couple of trucks with the 3408, more with the Silver 92’s that were uncorked, one with a KTA900 that he home built that did horrible things to the frame and rear axles and had intentions of using a 3412 in a project that didn’t happen. There were a few independents with 12V92’s and 3412’s that were feared here! Those were the days!
Wow, nice truck! Love the color too! Miss my first Peterbilt. It was a 1985 Pete with a 3406B Cat. The color of my Pete was Dark Rose Gray, looks like the same color too! Good for him, way to go!

Hats off to the old timer. He embodies the working man attitude I've struggled to maintain for 40 years of hard work! That was a golden generation that won ww2 for pur freedom. Thank you!
Sounds like a great guy to have a conversation with. Interesting that it doesn’t have a Brakesaver, that’s the first thing I noticed. I wonder how many Petes or KWs had the 3408 in North America. Over here in Australia the Kenworth factory made 31 with the 3408 but we don’t get Peterbilt unless they are imported. Most of our 3408s in Australia were Ingersall Rand air start and most had the Brakesaver. Like he said, you can get good fuel mileage but you’ve got to know how to drive them properly. They are an O/O truck. There’s still a few working every day in Australia, not just show trucks.
Here in the US, Caterpillar marketed and registered the 3408 with the EPA under "automotive" use (over-the-road) for model years 1976-1985. There were a sizable amount of Kenworth W900As, K100s, Peterbilt 359s, 352Hs, and a couple 362s with 3408s. A good guy by the name of Cam Lavin (quite prevalent on the American Trucking Historical Society (ATHS) facebook group has dug through tons of build records and the latest Peterbilt with a factory 3408 he's come across was a 359 with a build date of May 28, 1985; roughly 10-11 months into the model year. It's extremely unlikely that Mr. Harry's truck came factory with a 3408. It must have been a glider kit as the Custom Build dash plate was only a thing on those. You could apparently order a 503 hp 3408B over-the-counter from Cat for 1986 and possibly 1987, but there's no evidence here to differentiate if Mr. Harry's is the typical 450 hp 3408 DITA or a B model. Now, all this doesn't detract from the fact that finding a good running 3408 these days (especially one this clean) is a massive treat.
@@hendo337 That was years ago. Nowadays we run Kenworths with Cummins X15 or you can get a QSK19 but they are pretty rare. Mack run the 6 cylinder Volvo engine, they say it’s a Mack engine except it isn’t.
Years ago there was a truck pull up in bath ny and on the way there we passed a dump bucket with a pete dragging it. He was pulling the hill out of Hammondsport and he was barking pretty good. Turns out he pulled in the fair. He had a 3408 under the hood. When he dropped the bucket they used a railroad tie to keep it from sinking into the ground. So he was loaded. Another truck that showed up was a heavy haul out of NY. They specially made that truck to pull heavy loads. That one had the 3412 in it. But the pete with the 3408 won it. He knew how to get the power to the ground. But they are rare, so it's nice to see this guy with his one of a kind original still on the road.
He is one genuine old school trucker, no flip flops here. Its so sad there are not many of his kind left. Hats off to 'Mr Harry" last of the old school.
Damn. I definitely missed my calling. That’s a beautiful truck. My dad (rest his soul) was a truck driver. He drove a little bit of everything. Log truck, flatbed, gasoline tanker, etc. Last thing he did was a transport bus driver for the Department of Corrections in Washington state before he retired at 72 back in 2010. I got to ride with him in the mid 80s when he drove tanker. I was fascinated with how he did everything. He was good at what he did. Sure miss those days.
Farwell to ages gone. What a beautiful large car. In my career of 34 yrs of driving, I drove most the incarnations of the 3406 in COEs. I always pined to work with 3408.
Oh that is one SWEET Peterbilt! And a fascinating owner and outstanding interview. Wow, This is a 'keeper'. And God Bless Mr. Henry - he is true 'class'!😎👍
Giant torque monsters Guzzles diesel rolls coal and hauls ass I believe the motors were rated around 450 through 500HP They really put out 550 or over 600HP I got one in my 1979 A model Kenworth. When I got the motor alive again and took it for its first run as it was… thing definitely made over 500 horsepower. Smoked like crazy too for sitting for many years but it ran and sounded fantastic
The cranks in the 3408’s are their Achilles heel, but they have no problem pushing 1800 on the torque. With a modern turbocharger on them they can hold their own against the big horse X-15’s and cranked up 6NZ’s
@@SuperDriver379 That’s a bit of an urban myth about the crank, same as you’ll only get 4.5 mpg loaded or empty. Mines done over 70,000 hours and the engine and crank have never been out the frame since it was built in 1979. It’s had three sets of heads and liner packs and a couple of water pumps and compressors and injectors and elements. The secret is to give it a bearing roll around every 6,000 hours, and change out the turbo at around 14,000 hours. No one ever mentions the real problem, which is that the compressor can fall of the rear alloy housing unless you fabricate an external bracket, and the alternator bracket will break unless you reinforce it. I did a bearing roll before Christmas and the crank was well within spec, end float was 0.014” and it never seems to change.
Years ago, I had a friend named Frank Toth who had a 49 ? needle nose Pete with a 3408. Being a master diesel mechanic having worked in it since the 80s I’ve only ever seen two trucks on the road with that big ass cat V8 in them. This was in the early 90s and Frank’s trucks was one of the first ones I remember seeing with twin 6 inch stacks on it. It looks like a freight train coming down the road. Just like Mr. Harry’s.
How the HELL did they shoe horn a V-8 Cat in a NEEDLE NOSE ??? BET you can't slide a piece of toilet paper between frame rails and exhaust manifolds never mind trying to get the hood closed ....
Just came across your channel and liked and subscribed That is one sweet rig right there I love the 3408 cat. GOD BLESS THE TRUCK DRIVERS OF AMERICA YOU ALL KEEP AMERICA MOVING.

God Bless you! mine is a 95 but has the N14 Cummings only goes around 87 89 but up and down hill .unfortunately I became disabled and was forced to park her in 14 . Now after many surgeries some that went afoul I'd like to give it another go also hauled dump trailer.
19:58 I enjoy safely driving 'The Gorge' on I-40 in my Shelby GT500KR, so that's a testament to Harry's Peterbilt in performance because that's tough for trucks to move nimbly through there. Exit 7 near the NC/TN line is 'Harmon's Den' Rd. and that is some of the most beautiful stretches of windy mountain road interstate in the country.
Never driven a V8 how I’d love to hook to something with that truck and ease on down the road somewhere. How do I wished there was still drivers as him out here what a better time it’d be than what we have now. What a truck to own I don’t see how it’s possible to keep that truck in the shape it’s in but he done it.
Lot of these kind of old timers in rural America. I drive 379exhd here in gypsum Colorado and there’s a lot of good old boys still driving…and they’re raising their kids to do the same and take over the family businesses. Couldn’t pay me to drive anywhere close to the cities. It’s bad enough having to deal with I-70 here in eagle county and all of the mountain driving and inexperienced drivers.
There was an o/o in so cal about 20 years back that had a Pete a lot like this one. It was gorgeous with a bright yellow paint job. I can’t remember the engine, 425 cat probably. Remarkable thing was it had a two stick in it. He claimed he ordered it that way. This was a 379 so it wasn’t super old. He was proud of it, had a lic plate frame that said” happiness is two sticks”.
First truck I herded down the road was a 1967 R600 Mack with a thermedyne 285 and a 5 +3 mack trans. Drove 5+4s, even drove a 4300 Int with a 400 cummins with a 12513 with a 4 sp aux and 2 speed rears in it. I'm 60 years old and got my class a when I was 16 but started driving trucks years before that
I had a new gunmetal flat top 60” 84 359 with the 400 hp 3406 15 spid and traded it for a new white 86 359 with the 600 hp 3406….15 spd with 72” sleeper……best trucks I ever ran.

What a wonderful looking truck driver. I just love a 359 Pete . I think they should still make the 3408 Cat engine and without the the DEF fluid stuff. You sir have a great looking engine too. Take care of yourself and your truck. May our Lord be with you always.
I have seen that truck. I just retired after 48 years of driving I live in Newnan, Georgia and I have seen that truck down around Lagrange GA and yes, sir it is one bad mammy jammer.
Lived in LaGrange for 62 years Ben gone for 14. I believe I have seen that truck Believe he delivered to one of the Milliken plants
@@benthompson5476
There’s one like this in LaGrange, belongs to a man named Raymond.
You probably know of him if you’re familiar with LaGrange, has a pretty good size trucking company. I drove for him back in the 9O’s.
He leased one of his warehouses to Millikan.
His is real close to the same color,v8 and similar wheel base. Excellent shape too.
They pull refers, rgn among other.
I’m wondering if that’s the one you saw.
He’s one of the best people you’ll ever meet.
Let me know if you know of him.
The grandkids are running the company now.
@@alleycat9369 Raymond Vaughn. Good man Great trucking family. They know their business. My brother an I bought a Long NosePete with a Cat 4 1/4 think it had a 14 or 16 speed in it Last 2 gears we call go to jail gears from Raymond. Ran it for a couple years. Great truck. Same color as Mr Harry’s truck
@@benthompson5476
That’s right, I figured you knew him if you lived there. Back in the day he had some pretty fast trucks and good drivers.
Last time I was up there he still had that 359.
Good to hear from you,
They called me double d
Back then. Take care.
Love the quality and workmanship on that truck! The polished stainless is amazing! Interior is like new!
One loved and cherished masterpiece!
What a beautiful truck. This is truly a gem.
Absolutely awesome video & thank you, Mr. Harry. You are the true legend. God bless you and be with you. I would love to sit and visit with you for hours. I bet you have so many stories. Sir you are better than any stainless ever made.
Nice truck brings back memories ,I ran the shop at Peterbilt of Nashville back in them days it’s good to see an old truck look so good
Mr. Harry is a OG of the highways beautiful old 359 right there
Wow this things immaculate. Real credit to this man for looking after this rig so well all these years. Really great to see. He must spend hours and hours polishing all that metal though. Even the motor is spotless. Well done Sir 👏👍
Awesome truck and Mr. Harry is a true legend.
Several here in the USA still working as well
I thought most of the big trucks and road trains over there ran Mack E9s or V12 Detroit's?
This guy is nothing but a legend. Respect
He is one genuine old school trucker, no flip flops here. Its so sad there are not many of his kind left. Hats off to 'Mr Harry" last of the old school.
My dad bought 2 brand new 359'S in 85 10 & 4 over in both boxes,3406 cats,beautiful trucks,my brother still has one of them.thank you!!!😊😊😊
there is nothing like old school truckin great interview
My uncle drove trucks too I loved listen to my dad and my uncle talk about driving back in the old days...
Incredible insight & knowledge from "The Bandit"....
Farwell to ages gone. What a beautiful large car. In my career of 34 yrs of driving, I drove most the incarnations of the 3406 in COEs. I always pined to work with 3408.
Dozer motor in a big hood, gotta love it. I need me one!
Imagine a 1000/3000 3508 in a truck. 🤔
What a Gentleman !
What a Beautiful truck !
My good man, you have put together a beautiful truck! Very much attention to detail. Thanks for sharing her with us
Beautiful rig Mr. Harry and great show Christopher!!!!
I WANT THIS TRUCK! Love the color. Much respect.
359 with a white whale... Absolutely beautiful, love it!
Oh that is one SWEET Peterbilt! And a fascinating owner and outstanding interview. Wow, This is a 'keeper'. And God Bless Mr. Henry - he is true 'class'!😎👍
I’m from buckhorn ky, eastern ky is where the best comes from 💪🏻
Mr. Harry, that's pure class a true driver that's what I wanted to be when I grew up thanks for setting the bar and keeping it going 👍😎👍
What a sweet ride and cool driver, he needs the 200g tanks because that 08 is thirsty!

Absolutely beautiful truck. It's a shame we will never see anything like this come out of the factory again.
Beautiful old 359. Great video.
Now this is what you call a big rig ❤
This man is a legend ...need a sit down Interview him and his truck
I love interviews with our trucking patriarchs. Nice rig Mr Harry. 🙏🏾
I think you meant trucking patriarchs. Matriarchs are women. Patriarchs are men.
@@jti2007 😂. Thanx for the correction. 🙏🏾
Giant torque monsters
Guzzles diesel rolls coal and hauls ass
I believe the motors were rated around 450 through 500HP
They really put out 550 or over 600HP
I got one in my 1979 A model Kenworth. When I got the motor alive again and took it for its first run as it was… thing definitely made over 500 horsepower. Smoked like crazy too for sitting for many years but it ran and sounded fantastic
Mine is 550 at the wheels so around 610 at the flywheel. They are easy to bump up the power, you just need CAT’s special tool for the fuel racks.
@@gm16v149 yeah you can easily turn up a older CAT that have manual fuel primers that are cool.
They really push way more power than they’re rated
The cranks in the 3408’s are their Achilles heel, but they have no problem pushing 1800 on the torque. With a modern turbocharger on them they can hold their own against the big horse X-15’s and cranked up 6NZ’s
@@SuperDriver379 they got probably 1900 torque
Just came across your channel and liked and subscribed
That is one sweet rig right there I love the 3408 cat.
GOD BLESS THE TRUCK DRIVERS OF AMERICA YOU ALL KEEP AMERICA MOVING.
This guy is awesome love how he does it ! Would be cool to have a conversation with hes a gem
The 3408 even has period correct corporate logo on the valve covers.
Wow amazing you Sir have an amazing, beautiful work horse and I always admire a man or women who takes pride in their ride. God Bless you! mine is a 95 but has the N14 Cummings only goes around 87 89 but up and down hill .unfortunately I became disabled and was forced to park her in 14 . Now after many surgeries some that went afoul I'd like to give it another go also hauled dump trailer.
Those were the days. Awsome content
Much props to Mr Harry!!
Beautiful job, I drive a 359 too, 3406 B model, wouldn't trade it for anything else!
Beautiful truck and well kept. A true truck driver
Good possibility I’ve passed this truck sometime or another. I live a few counties over from Harlan Co. What a jewel!! 👍
Difference between a semi and a large car is, while a semi is changing gears, a large car is changing counties
Big truck go fast as he can, Large car go as fast as he want to.
Bad-ass truck, Mr Harry. You’re the real deal. My hat’s off to ya!
In the Movies, Burt Renyolds was the "Bandit", Mr Harry is "THE BANDIT"! Hauling Coal! Really Rolling Coal!!! Thank you for your dedication and Hard Work!! Beautiful Truck & a Gentleman! 👏👏👏👍👍👍🇺🇸
Great interview, great truck. No substitute for experience.
My late father pulled dump trailer for 45 years. The best trailer he had was a 39' Alumatec frameless. It was only the second spread axle they made.
My 85 Exhd is factory 270wb. I have a BC III. I love that truck
NTC-400 in it?
Big cam lll nice motor
I’d love listening to his trucking stories
