Thanks for the detailed video mate. Very direct and no clickbaiting. My left analog stick on my xbox one s controller was really bad. My character kept moving by themselves in games and were literally unplayable. So today I decided to open and fix it. I run through the comments before trying and saw a lot of people saying method 6 worked, so after trying the other methods I did method 6 and it worked!! The green plastic thing was really dirty. But only one of them. I had some trouble putting one of them back in place and had to cut the bottom peg. Then I tried it on gamepad tester, no more drift. And then went in game to test, and still no drift. So thank you again!! 😂

@@its_nuked still working great. I haven't been playing much with my controller these days, I'm mostly on kbm. But I played a lot of spiderman with the controller after fixing it and it was working fine.

Yeah I really shoulda listened to him when he said “caution” a second time, my left-right on my left joystick simply doesn’t work anymore. The up-down is fixed tho!!
I'd like to thank you for the video. Method 6 worked for me as the part where the ring touches had a tiny stain and I managed to clean it. No more drift in my Xbox Wireless Controller.

I tried every step, 6 was the one that finally worked. Blowing didn’t, tapping on the back didn’t, cleaning out the inside stick didn’t, but prying apart that little green cap and cleaning the entire inside of that area(the white part mostly) actually did the trick, and the controller had no damage thanks to your cautious process.

@@tizio2332 yeah, it helped as a temporary fix but then it eventually came back after a few weeks. As I’m a college student, It was nice tho as it gave me enough time to get a new one while still being able to play.

@@solaria5513 like the screen would just randomly start panning up, and if paused a game, it would just cycle up endlessly through the menu. It was basically a “constant yet phantom UP input”. It eventually came back but I extended the life of the controller about 2 weeks with this fix.
Found this on a random internet search. Gotta say. It worked. Step 5. There was a little piece on the stick that was protruded just enough to make it stick while moving up and down. Took it out. No more problems. Thanks. Great visuals and guidance here

Ive done the hard way in the oast and yours is the first and best video ive seen showing all ways to fix it with logical thinking and clear and precise instructions both audible and visual.

Wow, I did every single thing in this video, and none of them worked, after step 6 I almost gave up, because of how you worded the experimental step I didn't think it would work, but my mood instantly changed when i took that little thing out and everything started working perfectly. Litterally tried everything else on the internet, thought the universe hated me yet again, but this is the first time ive won at something like this. Thank you so much, taking the part out made drift slightly unstable, but still controllable and wont do it randomly. I can finally play KSP because of you man, before it was impossible and i didnt want to buy another controller, because mine was BRAND NEW! Its crazy, sucks it was past the 90 day warrenty, but staying up all night rewatching this video multiple times and doing everything in it proved to be worthwhile, though i could have saved half that time if i had just yanked that black thing out in the first place 😂
Thank you very much for this video. The method 6 worked perfectly. I had a massive drift with left stick (only up and down directions). The methods before 6 unfortunatelly didnt help out in my case. I did it on my second go as at first glance it seemed too difficult for me to disassemble it so much, but it turned out to be quite easy. Good luck everyone!
Update: After a while another issue with the same sensor appeared. I've cleaned everything again but it did nothing this time. Then I opened different sensor to compare the tiny disks (6:40) inside them and it looked like the disk in faulty sensor was a bit deformed - this little nudge in the middle of the moving part was not there, it was flat and it turned out to be too tiny to bend it like that.
When all hope seemed lost, I remembered that I have a very old (at least 13 years) logitech controller laying around somewhere. I've decided to see if It's analog sensor uses the same disk by any chance. It did, and placing it in my xbox controller fixed my issue :)
So after my experience with all of this I can give you the following advices:
- be extra carefull when taking out and putting back in the disk
- If you have an old controller with analog sticks somewhere see if you can replace the disk part to fix your issue

@its_nuked sry for the late reply, unfortunately i had to do it twice because the drifting came back after some time and i guess i applied to much force cleaning it the last time. Its definitely broken now. Anyway, it was a good try.
PHENOMINAL VIDEO!!! Had a drift on my left analog stick and had tried everything up to step 5. Went to step 6 and it fixed it like a charm. Great video. Be sure you guys are using the right tools, be patient with yourself if it's your first time working inside a piece of hardware, and try not to rush through this to get back to your gaming faster. Just follow these instructions and your chances of saving yourself $60 will go up
How long does it take to dry at Step 5? I'm testing it on Cyberpunk 2077 after. It's the game I notice the drift a lot.

Changing the disk helped me with fixing the drift, thank you for this video, it helped me to understand what was the issue and order a part that i needed to fix it.
Nice work! The first step helped me with my problem. The left analog stick was stick drifting. So I tried cleaning the entire unit with a Q-tip and alcohol. It's working again. Also the trigger buttons were sticking. Cleaned them the same way with the left stick. You saved me from having to buy another controller! Thank you for this video. Gave it a like!

Dude I love you so much! It literally works. I used method one on my controller analog drift and it didn’t work but once I used method two by blowing into the sides while pushing the drift on the opposite side and it worked! I couldn’t believe it! I had to walk away from my controller and pretend it didn’t happened because I deadass thought your methods weren’t gonna work but it did! I’m really happy because I been having problem for weeks now and it went away. Thank you so much!

I've had a series s for less than two years and just a few weeks ago I started having drift problems on the right stick in the up direction. I saw this video and thought it would be good and it was!!! I tried method 6 of yours and it worked! Thanks a ton bro! Just got my One S last week and this "drifting" thing just kept worsening. Blowing directly around the left stick with my mouth did the trick for me. I really didn’t wanna have to go for method 6 which looked scary even for an avid hardware guy like me but the other 5 didn’t do the trick. Decided to try it anyway because I couldn’t bother waiting for the replacement and it worked like a charm !

I really appreciate the help. I went through 3 controllers in less than three months last year. Those early controllers were super flawed. All of them had stick drift. I used my warranty until it ran out. It's a real shame that I cannot fix this because it's practically new.
Three controllers in less than three months? This drift thing is a bit of an epidemic.
Use one of the updated Xbox one controller that have Bluetooth built in. Those are the Xbox controllers with the least chance to get stick drift
@@OswaldBatesIIIEsq That was in the early days when it first came out. The newer controllers (so far) seem to be built a little better. I was fairly appalled. The warranty covered all of the repairs.

My older one s controller lasted 3 years before the drift got really bad
I got a new red one lasted 10 months before the drift showed up
Method 6 worked for me. Had to re solder two connections but in the end it all worked and the drift is completely gone. I appreciate this a lot thank you
Tried a few of your tips with cleaning the debris out of my XBox Series S controller, and they seem to have helped. Gently hit the back of the controller, vacuum all around, then I carefully cleaned remaining debris with a Q-tip and some isopropyl alcohol (that’s rubbing alcohol that is usually kept in a bathroom as a first aid disinfectant those of you who didn’t know). Thanks a ton, man!
Awesome Tutorial. Took me 5 minutes to open the controller and clean everything up. Works as a charm. It wasn’t to hard loosening the grips by hand, which is nice, because there are no visible damages seen now.

Also use 90+ percent isopropyl. Use 70 if you can't find the 90+ but you have to let it dry more before you put it back together

Thanks so much dude, I had a controller that straight up wouldn't let you move forward and i tried method 1 and immediately found some progress.
This video is amazing! I used method 6 but instead of removing the back and fully removing the green doors I just ever so slightly pried the green doors open from the front and left them slightly open like I’m talking a millimeter or two and I just left it like that and that seemed to have done the trick!

As you stated the most struggle i had was with the grips...
Also my controller was built with security torx screws which have a little pin in the middle.
For those of you who also have those screws, you can unscrew them with a small flathead if you dont have the right torx bit.
There was also only one connector cable for me.
I followed the list up until Method 6, which seemed to do the trick for me. The inside of the "disk-chamber" of my Y-Axis was fairly dirty.
I cleaned both of the disks and chambers with Isopropyl.
Putting it back together i unfortunately broke one of those tabs in the grip.
Both of the grips definitely feel "looser" now but man...the drift is gone...

Same issue. 360 controller is over a decade old and still functioning, One never broke until I've sold my Xbox, but the Series S controller drifted after a few months of playing.

I want to thank you for this, my left thumbstick was making most games actually unplayable. Removing the grey door is exactly what my controller needed, i appreciate you mentioning that even though you didnt exactly believe in it. It seems like removing the grey door works when the stick is having trouble returning to the neutral position, at least in my case.

Thank you for the amazing tutorial. I couldn't proceed past method 5 because the torque screwdrivers were too large but I fixed it with method 4.5. Removing the side thingies and blowing into the controller through the new openings.

method 6 broke it completely lol
I was a bit skeptical that it would ruin my controller for good and that's exactly what happened. Be very careful with step 6, once I opened those green flaps after 5:42 then my controller was never the same again, now there is an unfixable permanent drift. That part is very sensitive and didn't like being opened. Unless you really don't mind losing a controller I don't recommend going past step 5.
Mine was the opposite, I had the most horrible drift and cleaning that 1 green door thingy, boom no more drift, I think it’s very easy to break so just be careful
Thank you for sharing the fixes. They work. I ended up using Method 6. Not only the disc but the contact inside the green door needs to be cleaned too. And make sure the flat dent of the disc has to point up when you are putting it back inside the green door.

I have a feeling mine is damage related, I just don’t know how. I do know that at one point it fell pretty hard and the left bumper was difficult to press for a while, as if it was bent. Now it feels like normal again, I think. But the left stick drifts with or without contact after a few seconds, sometimes it doesn’t. So weird.

Same here, I got my controller on the 22nd of may of this year as a birthday gift cause I asked for a new controller, my new one has already got drift and I feel that it's something to do with the firmware update, I recently did another controller firmware update and ever since it hasn't been the same and now my camera joystick has upwards drift
@@oe-hr5ft mine too, it drifts upwards sometimes and sometimes it doesn’t. I truly believe it has to do with the new controller update because my controller was fine before I updated it, and i take care of my controllers. It’s basically brand new. The update did it and it’s funny everyone having the same problem after the update but Microsoft is denying it.

Great video! What worked for me was option number 9 ;) I was hoping it wouldn't come to soldering new sticks. Thankfully all I had to do was replacing that springy disks inside green plastic case. Worked like a charm.

It's better to use 91% isopropyl. There's less water in that mix.

Mate the moment you said "some people just blow directly into it" i just started doing it and its instantly fixed 😁 had this issue for months to the point i had to turn off the controller in order to watch videos.

At 1:45, method five worked for me. I tried everything up to opening it up with no luck. My left thumb stick y-axis was acting up. I q-tipped all the spots you recommended but did not work. So, I opted to separate the green door enough with a dental pick and tried to clean it with a Q-Tip but evidently that wasn't quite good enough, as the next step I took was to actually flush out the potentiometer with the alcohol, and after blowing out the excess alcohol and cycling the controller a bit, replaced the battery and top cover and then gave it a go and it is now working perfectly!
