I bought it not working from a kid that "promises it worked". It was a gift for my pre teen daughter... so to get it fixed is huge! Thank you so much!
Nice job. Method 6 is cleaning out the contacts and wipers of the potentiometers. I thought this would be unfeasible without desoldering from the board, but it wasn't that bad. It looks like dry dielectric grease on the wiper/resistor element. Isopropyl took it right off and eliminated all drift and sticking. Whole analog stick assemblies are available at decent prices to solder in if this method doesn't work.
You sir saved me a lot of money. God i can't thank you enough :) I had to go all the way to level 6 and clean the potientiometer, but in the end the drift vanished completely from the right stick of my beloved Elite Series 1. A bit wearout stayed, but that is normal hence it's almost 7 years old and used almost daily on my PC. While i do have the Elite Series 2 on my Xbox and could theoretically use it on my PC, too, i really love the long life of the 1 and first and foremost: the absence of a glued non changeable battery. 2 AA rechargable batteries are changed in less than 10 seconds and having 1-2 good pairs charged all the time is more than enough for me. :) Again: Thank you! Maybe a note to all Elite Series 1 owners: the cable running from the back to the second board is a ribbon cable in our case. Be careful pulling that out and use tweezers that come with many precision screwdriver kits to put them back in carefully, to not damage it
I went to method 6 some months back. When it worked again with no drift after the clean, I thought how many controllers could I buy cheap with the drift and with the rest fix, re-sell them. The controller I fixed worked for a few hours no problem and felt confident enough to sell it. It was bought and I shipped it off. Days later they tried the controller and reported drift in the same stick I thought I fixed. So it's only a very short temporary solution. What you really need to do is replace the component by soldering it in.
@@HowToX no, it doesn't. If you play games like a real person, these controllers are designed to break. The potentiometers are horrible. The only true fix is to solder a new one.
Damn bro 🤯 I looked at your video and opened my Xbox controller swaped the sticks because my left stick was not working in one direction after doing this it started working good ... I am subscribing thanks so much bro
2 years later and this still helped me, only took about 15 mins too. Method 5 worked to stop my right stick from registering a sharp "up" input every few seconds.
dude, just blowing my analog fixed the issue, it was moving like 25% in Y axis and now it's all good (it's a xbox one FAT controller, so it's kinda old, but now it's as good as always). THANK YOU MAN
This was so useful, i litterally had my old Xbox Elite 1 controller in its case on the shelf for years, as the left stick had depressed and flipping it round and knocking on it fixed it, so thanks you for the guide.
I bought an elite controller for 20$ with very slight drift on the right stick. I've tried to clean the drift out of 30-40 controllers before with mixed results, so naturally when i found this video i had high hopes. I took out and cleaned/bent all the discs back and cleaned both pcbs, let them dry and reassembled. This made the drift issue worse. I'm gonna try to rotate the discs from one side to the other and double check my work at some point. Thanks for the information, most video just offer generic advice without showing how the controller internals function 👍
Fantastic tutorial! Had a persistent Y-axis drift in the right thumbstick, didn't realise the potentiometers were cleanable without desoldering! Both thumbsticks are practically dead centre when left at rest now! I do wish they'd made the xbone controllers as easy to take apart as the 360's though!
I'm just commenting my experience to see if it helps anyone. I had wicked drift (XBOX Series X|S) on my right stick. Symptoms were always moving in the up direction. Major pain when playing a game and always looking up.. I tried cleaning by compressed air, Iso Alcohol (99.9%) q-tip and toothbrush. I prefer not using cotton balls due to the transfer of tiny hairs. Nothing worked. I ended up taking out the Y axis sensor. Looking at the sensor using a magnifying glass I was able to see a small white particle (maybe plastic?) and a very thin dust-like hair similar to the one you can see at 5:52 in this video. I removed the particles using fine tip tweezers, gently cleaned with a q-tip and ISO. Let dry. Reviewed the sensor and sensor housing for any further particles and replaced the sensor. Tested and works better than it did when I bought it. Although I can see how a dust-like hair may make its way into the sensor housing, I can't imagine how a small piece of plastic would work its way in. I'm guessing most of the sensor issues may be due to poor quality assurance.
Sad to say, with my controller, none of these worked. First I tried 1, then 2, then I went then I went to 5, but it didn't look that dirty, so I just went to 6. Did everything, didn't try 7 since I figured I wouldn't need to go that far, and I don't feel like taking apart my controller again rn. So, my controller seems busted, and in fact the drift has only gotten worst. While it used to be slightly a great annoyance, now my controller it near to inplayable. Oh well, I've had this controller for at least 4 years now, probably 6 if I were to guess. The joystick grip is gone anyways, about time for a new one I guess. Oh well, best of luck to anyone else repairing their controllers, it seems like everyone else who's tried has gotten great success. Great tutorial btw, very straightforward and helpful, even if my controller didn't make it. 👍
Thank you so much. I was able fix my controller. lol I was scared of braking the green piece but it was easy to take apart and clean with w-40 and now the stick drift is gone.
Method 5 seems to have worked for me! After numerous cleanings and air blowings I finally decided to take the controller apart since I would be likely throwing it away anyways, so much debis in there!
Ah single eye lash was inside my left analog stick, method 5 and tapping on the back caused it to fall out and fix my issues. Thank you! Edit: Welp, or not. Must be something deeper inside
I don't know if this is going to help anybody, but I was having stutters in my analog stick so I mashed it for 1 minute straight, and it worked. One of the risky one though because you may break your analog if you go on about it to much
Anyone who doesnt have one of those screwdrivers (who does honestly) you can use a drill bit meant to drill holes in wood, make sure its a thin one but the sides will dig in slightly and catch it
My god im so childish 😂 I lost it when he said blow around the stick Blow Into side of the shaft Or some people just put there mouth on it and blow i seriously just lost it 😂😂😂
Little food for that, 2:00 they cannot legally void your warranty, just because you tried to repair it. This is actually been fought in the Supreme Court case and his rules on.
What SC case was that? Gotta cite sources. Correct that proper repair attempt following procedure and using parts provided/approved by MS doesn’t void warranty as such. However, warranty won’t cover damage caused by recklessness, improper execution, deviation from instructions, environmental conditions, deficient tools , insufficient preparation, et al. Basically you can repair and keep warranty, but they’re not responsible for anything you break in the process. And really, most people wouldn’t do surgery if they were under warranty anyway.
Had to go until step 6, opening the small doors, but this fixed the issure for the moment. Actually, opening the controller's outside shell was the most annoying part, because not all of the screws didn't fit right to my torx srewdriver. Had to use a torx 9 as well as a flat head. Opening the green doors wasnt very complicated to my surprise, just be very gentle and take it slow, use a very tiny flat screwdriver head. Now I hope the controller will be fine again. Bought it 5 years ago but didn't use it much, it even was quite clean inside and outside. Back in the days... I remember my Dreamcast Joypad I used a very lot, never had any problems. Sega built in complete different high quality analogue stick electronics, they were to last like forever and drifting wasn't even possible due to the construction. Maybe I'm just too old for the newer shit...
thank you so much your video was simple and straight to the point and you hekped me fix my controller as it had some cat hair in the stick which i just had to pull out of it
My controller is messed up because that gray piece by the button is actually broken. I have another controller this has the same joystick problem but I'm gonna open it now to see whats wrong Edit: I bent that door piece out, cleaned it up, and now it works!!! it was just full of gunk inside which was messing with the contacts. I'm so glad I fixed this because the rest of the controller is still perfect
Method 7 worked for me! I could kinda tell that nothing else was going to, Because the contact cleaning was doing absolutely nothing. I used needle nose tweezers and was able to pull it out the little grey tab thing without too much trouble.
Had this problem very recently after just having bought a new elite controller. My left stick didn't move back but stays where it is causing, e.g. in Rocket League, a drift out of the blue. All I had to do is turn the head of the stick clockwise. Appearently you can adjust it here and after turning it untill the end, the problem was solved. No cleaning required at all.
When I bent the green door back, it broke the metal connection, fairly easily! I dunno how to fix it from there. Also should've informed us on the direction the spring disc should have been inserted; bendy side up away from pcb or down towards it?
