    If you get the upgrade kit, does that give you the same warranty on the light as if you bought a brand new G6? I honestly think the upgrade kit concept is neat, but pricing is not competitive as you can probably sell the G5s on the used market for more of a savings than going the upgrade kit route and then buy G6 lights outright where you don’t have to take apart of light to upgrade.

      agree with you. you could sell them for 100 cheaper then what g6 is and then buy g6! so not sure how the 199 price is good. I honestly wish they did it cheaper for upgrade kit.

      On the BRS video, they confirmed you get a new warranty on the new parts, existing warranty remains in place for the old parts.

    I have 4 XR15 blues over my 6ft tank, I always regretted not doing 2 pro and 2 blue. The tank just needs some warm white LEDs in my opinion. Being able to swap the board out on two of them would be pretty sweet.

    Is the g6 worth the extra 100 bucks over the now discounted g5?

    I really love the blue spectrum. I could really use one of these G6’s, I have two old A360 tuna blues with some burnt led chips, causing some flickering and altering of the spectrum. I also receive a lot of shadowing with my current lights, so I’m hoping these ecotech lights will help with that.

    Given I was planning on a tank upgrade this summer, which I've already started. These are just in time for me to go from my G5 XR15's to these new G6 30's.
    I'm not completely sold on the new LED optimization. They likely put esthetic appeal ahead of coral biology on this go around. The G6 should grow coral as well as the G5's, though arguably it's not an upgrade in LED's. Just a spectrum shift.
    However, looking at the lens. Now that is a direct upgrade.
    Looking forward to getting a few of these over the next year or so.

      warm white is actually more beneficial comparing to cold white. It will be better for your coral and the difference par from inner center to exterior barely have a difference.

    • @dusk1947
      @dusk1947 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@matmalette I agree! Ok that is an argument for 4 of the 100 LED's in the XR30 Blue G6. What's the argument for the other 96% of LED's?
      (on a personal note, I run Kessil Tuna Sun's with my Radion Blues, specifically because warm light spectrums drive more photosynthetic activity. I'm not disagreeing with what you said. I'm disagreeing with the notion of the LED's being in any way an upgrade).
      The spread is nice too, that part I agreed with already. The lens is a "direct upgrade" as I noted in my OP. The difference in PAR spread is not due to the change in LED's, that's the lens doing that. The LED's are identical, just different colors. They have the same output as a G5, it's simply spread out better now.
      But the drop of so many 440-525nm LED's in the G5 and repurposing them to 350-440nm in the G6 was for biofluorescent's, not growth. The lower nm range better excites the chromoprotein responsible for the glow you detect with actinic lighting. You can tell with the naked eye it is less efficient than a spectrum targeting a dedicated phot-pigments, as the pigment is exciting and reflecting, rather than adsorbing the photon. This does not mean they can't produce energy, but it is less efficient than targeting something like Chlorophyll c, whose sensitivity drops out at 447nm. Or Chlorophyll a, which drops out around 450nm. Both of which are the two primary photo-pigments in all zooxanthella. That symbiont also has peridinin (470-550nm) and diadinoxanthin which is a carotenoid (448-400nm)... That's the vast majority of a dinoflagellate's photosynthetic range in the blue-green region of the EMS.
      Again, shifting PAR from a photosynthetic active spectrum to a biofluorescent spectrum is not for coral health. It's for our esthetic preference.
      I also have a background in biology, though my formal training is in terrestrial plants not coral.
      I'm happy they included more warm whites, but you need a stronger argument to convince me that 4 warm whites constitute an upgrade.
      like I said, it's a spectrum shift. The only upgrade is the lens.
      EcoTech even says as much on their G6 release page, "With the addition of 395nm diodes, G6 pushes deeper into the UV range, achieving a new level of coral and fish fluorescence."
      Knowing this, I will still buy a few Gen 6 Blues in the near future as the light is still great. And I'd esthetically appreciate actinic in my tank. But it is not better for coral health, and it's not an upgrade in LED's. Everything other than the lends is a side-grade at best.
      If they wanted to target coral health, their cool "Anatomy of the G6 Spectrum" chart would have put more energy into the 450-580nm area. Instead of hollowing it out.

    • @matmalette
      @matmalette 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Well the newer lens makes the difference I guess I use Hydra 32 hd's on my tank. It's to me not worth the change from a g5. Actually if your reef is happy with your lights that's what's important and not having the latest products. It's actually an amazing time to get G5

    • @dusk1947
      @dusk1947 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@matmalette now that is a far better question. I wouldn't get the G6, to just get it. The G5 is excellent still.
      I'll personally be getting G6's becase I'm in the middle of a tank upgrade. I'm going from a XR15 to a XR30 to cover the increase surface area of a new tank. If I was not swapping to a larger tank, I would not be swapping out my XR15 G5's. Their is no reason to, they already great.
      I can't answer why someone else would upgrade from a 5 to a 6, it doesn't seem worth it.

    No wifi enabled out the box, shame. In the current energy climate I was hoping to see a drop in wattage but similar or increased output from the G5.

      It utilizes Bluetooth connectivity with Mobius app for connection/configuration. What configuration/controllability are you looking for over Wi-fi connection?

    • @dusk1947
      @dusk1947 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'd rather it be Bluetooth over Wi-fi personally. I honestly love old school nobs the best; but given the optimization in a Radion's controller app, Bluetooth through my phone is fine.
      I don't need to connect remotely to them through the internet. That would be a waste of money and a dead feature for many of us.

      @@dusk1947 Same here on wifi vs BT. BT you get to see what you're actually changing. I can't think of anything configuration wise I'd like to set wirelessly on the fly. Lighting is one of those things that should be set/forget, with maybe some minor tweaking on intensity/schedule up front.

      @@dusk1947 I guess it depends on how many tanks you have and how many ecotech devices you have, I find bluetooth unreliable and I want to be able to control my devices when I'm away from the tank should I need to, I was hoping now apex and ecotech are all part of the same company they might have gone someway to integrating them. I sit at pc all day be handy to see all my ecotech gear like I can see all my apex gear.

    They never should have launched two lights last gen....knew that was a mistake ....idc if they sold a million units ...it's was a huge turnoff and created more confusion amongst the buyers....make one beast of a light at the price it sells for and if the app still sucks....it's still a dud and I cannot recommend it to customers....the sky on the other hand sells itself when customers see it in action

  • @tomg5405

    This should actually have been the real g5 instead of the g6.The wider spectrum in the blue is a good thing, less green I'm not sure since I turned it to 100% the results are better and also t5 have a spike in the green.The g5 was less good than the g4, a more bad spectrum, less color pop, less par and not a real UV, fan noise,you needed to add a diffuser to not get disco ball effects,just the spread was a bit better but to have good results and coverage and less shadowing,I needed to buy twice the recommended amount and ad t5. Their marketing was a real scam.And now they try to sell us an upgrade that is insanely expensive!No way, that is the best way for them to definitely lose their loyal customer. If there were honest, they would make this upgrade for a fair price to repair their error.

    • @tomg5405
      @tomg5405 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      did a bit research . I think same as the g5 they rush for made a new light that isn't ready. Probably they want to stop the loose of the customer going to other led with real uv..
      1) would their lens support Uva, from what I know their technology until know doesn't support it, so how suddenly without testing it can be possible? How long they will hold? Their is a risk for futur trouble here, I would like they told us how with the same technology it is possible when it wasn't before because this from the g5 wasn't ready it would probably last enough long until your led is not more in garanty..
      2)where is the moonlight introduce by the g5? Given the design from the g6 their is a space for it but where it is? Economical reason, shortage?
      3) the spectrum is relatively unchanged, apart from maybe having less blue. They seem to have even made it narrower.
      they have 395 but it is not enough to make a difference.
      So at the end not even a great update. It would be better they fix their products befor launching a new model of they want us to be loyal to them
