    I had a 2010 tiguan and now have a 2019 tiguan and I've felt front wheel slip, on dry road, in the 2019 that I never felt in the 2010. Haven't put the gen 5 to any real test yet but hopefully it does as good as the old one.

      You may want to make sure your haldex is actually working. The pump failed on my 2016 S3 and basically turned it into a GTI. I started noticing that even with partial throttle it would spin the front wheels constantly on dry pavement which should not happen, even with 350+ ft/lb torque. I proved it by parking the front wheels on an ice patch and the rears on dry pavement. The car would not move at all, just spin the fronts. After the fix it is a rocket off the line. The gen 5 has no filter so it gets gunked up. My mechanic said he has seen a bunch of them fail at low mileages (30-50k).

    How does the Quattro in the A4 and up function?

    • @phonecase3493
      @phonecase3493 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The quattro system in the A4 utilizes a torsen center differential. This type of quattro is generally regarded as superior to Haldex, as it is permanent AWD that never decouples the rear wheels (minus the B9 allroad). Haldex does, however, achieve slightly better fuel economy due to it being FWD when the rear wheels aren't needed. torque split is 40F:60R or 50F:50R depending on which generation A4.

    • @phonecase3493
      @phonecase3493 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@tiedeious5404 Audi doesn't specify one on their service interval chart for 2013. Personally, I would change the Trans fluid at ~60k miles and diff fluids at ~100k. they're regarded as "lifetime" of the car fluids, but if you're keeping the car long term, it would be a good idea to change the fluid at some point before 100k miles.

    • @tiedeious5404
      @tiedeious5404 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@phonecase3493 Thanks. I have heard that this is a good idea. That means I'm due for both lol. Any thoughts on flush vs fluid change? Audi wanted to charge me $600 for a trans fluid flush. I know Haldex gets a lot of flak for not being as track performance oriented as some others, but boy is it excellent all-around system. Coming from a RWD + snow tires setup in the past, I now drive a MK7 Golf R + snow tires. Sunday we had 4-5" of snow here in MD and it still blows my mind how effective it is in the snow. I went up an unplowed steep hill with absolute ease, not even a hint of slippage, no flashing lights, nothing. As if I was driving on dry pavement. I've floored this car before in the rain and it hooks up no problem with just a hint of initial wheel spin, and that's with a JB4. And when you don't need it, you're enjoying all the gas millage efficiency of a FWD vehicle. No there is no drift mode, and it doesn't transfer enough power to make it feel RWDish. It's a fair compromise for my daily duty usage.

      Its a good system, but just doesn't drive as well as the Torsen systems when you really flog it. Maybe if had gears ahead of it to provide more rear bias. (I've got both systems)

    So if the gen 5 haldex which is in the RS3 is predominantly 100 to the front but can send 50 to the front and 50 to the rear how is it that the RS3 can send 100 to the rear?

    • @4x4.tests.on.rollers
      @4x4.tests.on.rollers 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      That comes from lack of understanding between static and dynamic driving behaviour. Static is 50/50, but car is a dynamic thing - there is changing coefficient of friction, there is transfer of weight etc.. Then almost 100% of torque may go to the rear.

    Thank you for this and other videos Deutsche Auto Parts produced. I appreciate the time it took to do the research, draft a narrative that explain generational nuances in simple terms and the supporting graphics. I also like seeing your 2004 R32 and appreciate what it takes to keep this 15 year old car in top notch condition. I'm the original owner of a 2004 GTI VR6 and like to keep mine looking as good as yours and operating reliably well. Up to this point, I replaced worn parts with mostly OEM parts or aftermarket parts that perform like OEM but have better reliability... no high performance parts. Soon I'll give you guys a call to discuss some in-depth routine maintenance that I need to consider. I look forward to getting your expert advice.

    3. Wiring logic

    I have a gen 1 Audi S3 (210HP version when factory stock), which I’m guessing comes with a gen 1 Haldex. It’s currently modded to 350HP. I’ve been searching for docs for a while now on how to convert it to RWD for drifting, but haven’t found anything. I was toying with the idea of removing the front axles and then trying to electrically trick the rear clutch closed. Would that result in 100% torque transfer in the rear you think? I think the only full-time AWD system that can get even close to 100% to the rear is the ATTESA-ETS as it's a rear biased system. Most other AWD systems are front drive based as far as I can recollect. IIRC, Audi's proper quattro (not their Haldex systems, but their Torsen set-up) is still maxed out at a torque split of 30/70 FR bias, but with the advantage of actual differential torque vectoring (not using ABS to achieve a similar result). Certain Audi's have the Haldex while other Audi's have the Torsen layout. All of them will say 'Quattro', which I think is a bit misleading.
      Really, Subaru's Symmetrical, Audi's Torsen (not their Haldex), Acura's SH-AWD, and Mitsubishi's S-AWC are the most...'versatile' AWD systems. The others are typically variations of Haldex with torque vectoring across planar axles via brakes.

    Could you comment on whether the the Gen 3 Haldex unit (like in a mazdaspeed6) is a reactive or proactive model? From driving the car, it feels like there's times where the car just keeps the clutch packs engaged under spirited driving regardless of throttle input. Not confirmed but I've read that it is more similar to the Gen 4 unit (than the Gen 2).

    Since a gen II and Gen IV are found in Audi 8P and TT, is there a vin # when they made the change?

  • @aj63
    @aj63 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Wrong.
    Official VW site uses the wording of "Haldex Clutch";
    www.volkswagen.co.uk/technology/transmissions-and-drivetrains/4motion
    Kinda debunks your video blog really.........
    Also VW state "In extreme situations, it's even possible to send almost 100% of power to the rear."
    So 'fake news' @Deutsche Auto Parts 🙄

    Haldex may or may not be a good system... I suppose it's better than nothing. I just think it's fraudulent to use AWD when talking about Quattro or 4motion. It's NOT 'AWD', it's 'sometimes-AWD'.

    Very informative and well explained video, thank you. What did the Audi A6s and A8s use during those years? They marketed them as Quattro AWD but you didn't mention them, were they on a different system?

    Ok. I have a question. I have a Golf MK4 2.8 VR6 204bhp . From the video i'm getting that i have a Gen 1 Haldex. So can i upgrade it with the performance module?

    • @maveric0738
      @maveric0738 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      MagnumBulletMatriX if your MK4 2.8 VR6 is a European spec and equipped with “4motion” Haldex system.. yes you can. I believe the only current upgrades that are available are HPA’s touch motion and United Motorsports tune.

      Did you at least pull out the pump and clean the screen on its intake? I've seen some pretty nasty photos of those, and others that looked 100% clean -- that may depend on how the car has been driven.

    Haldex Gen. 4 has also an oil filter. But in Gen. 5 they throw them out. And in different forum you can read a lot of fault clutches and pumps of the Gen.5
    I think that was the bigest mistake they ever made.

    GM uses a similar system in their trucks but the clutch system is in the transfer case not the diff. When in "auto 4x4" it engages and disengages the clutch pack as it sees slip.

    I think the way this should be summarized is, on VAG vehicles, it is referred to as a HALDEX, but is produced by BW. There is another example, mot very well know, on GM vehicles, dual wheel pick=up trucks, are called in sales brochures,. "dooley", after the person that patented the design, and when you look at other dual wheel p/u truck manufacturers it is spelled Dually.

    Deutsche Auto Parts ... You said Haldex gen. 5 it's a 100-0 system with 50-50 in some situations. I think Skoda have a different setup. Look at this:

    I had bmw 3 series now I have s3.I love it but sometimes I really miss the rear wheel drive.Front wheel is just bad.I wouldn't miss if it was real 4 wheel drive but haldex is not enough.Its okay most of the time and you won't notice its a front wheel if you don't care that much but when you do its heartbreaking.With my bimmer I was going fast and a puppy showed up it scared from my brake noise and just stood infront of the car waiting for me to hit I did a hard right then hard left it was so smooth and natural for the car.Similar situation happened with the s3 in traffic I did a hard right to pass a slow driver althoug it wasnt that hard like the puppy situation and the car completely fucked up I didn't know how I fixed it but I was almost spinning.It was scary I thought this would be more safe than the rearwheel drive.I guess in some situations but I hope oneday I can own another bmw to see how thats going to feel after this

    So much hate for such a great system. I have had several torsen and haldex cars over 15 years, and the difference is negligible in street driving, even in deep snow. I wonder if the haters have ever even compared the two.
