I couldn’t agree more in every single category. I really think these two figures hit what they are striving to be. If you want ultra toon with great accessories, articulation and paint the Takara has you covered. If you want a more heroic/mature looking bot that still hits that toon feel then Phoenix is probably for you. I absolutely love Phoenix and will never switch him out. I really appreciate all the hard work you put into these verses and how fair you are. One of your verses videos was the reason I started watching your channel in the first place so thanks it’s helped me chose between a lot of figures.
MP57 wings also fold up way more clean in robot mode because the hinge is closer to base than wing tip, so the hinge totally vanishes into the backpack away from sight. FT10 also has so many more visible screws and pins. Got my MP57 for 240 dollars so MP57 easily wins for me.
Great fair comparison. I will have to wait until I have the Takara in hand to make a final decision as to which is staying with my season 1 display and which is going into my Skyfire/Jetfire/Macross shrine, but I think it is going to be very hard to displace FT-10X from the season 1 display.
There's one category that should have gone to Phoenix: alt mode. The reason both got tied out was because of the playability of the Hasbro. But all those features also gave it the win at gimmicks. So they got rewarded twice for the same things.
I don't see it that way, but everyone is entitled to their opinion here. I think what sets mp-57 apart is the ability to have two jet modes , toy style and cartoon style. No other figure has provided this option
Give me MP57 anyway. My nostalgia is for the cartoon, and like you said takara knocked it out of the park on that front. Fantastic comparison video too!!
I remember when Phoenix first came out Maz at Transformers Square One took some pictures of it in alt mode next to some World's Smallest Transformers figures, I made the suggestion to use that front panel as a ramp with them which he did, it looked great with WST Prowl driving up it.
Great comparison! I like how the official has the option to be "like" the G1 toy as well. Jetfire/ Skyfire has always been in my top 5 favorite Transformers, and I really like the inclusion of the mini figures to mimic his mass shifting.
My patience paid off. I just got him from the sale over the weekend at TFSOURCE. Like you, I've been waiting for a MP Sky fire since forever. So I really had to hold back until a sudden sale came up on him. Love the figure and the review!!! -Hastyle Prime
Fair review. Im not sure if its entirely fair that Takara gets effectively 2pts for Gimmicks (you tied the jets because of the gimmicks). The Takara jet also does not look aerodynamic at all. Takara wins because of articulation, but the ratchets hinder it. Tho one could make the case that due to inflation, price is effectively tied. Both are great for different things -But I think its pretty telling that FT wins the Fan Vote absolutely.
Takara definitely looks very Sunbow accurate. I feel like Phoenix is kinda what he'd have looked like if Skyfire had been a character in Victory or Zone, with more heroic anime-like proportions. They're both good figures, but I'm definitely sticking with FT Phoenix.
This is a fair comparison. If I were to switch the points around to factors that matter the most to me, FT would win. But I can't deny that Takara met their target with a decent price on this one. Also, you forgot that the fingers for FT can be splayed. Wouldn't matter in terms of points, but it's still there anyway.
Phoenix actually does have a hip swivel if you unlatch the two parts above the Hip - if you take a look at EmGo's review of this one, he demonstrates how it works based on instruction he got from FansToys
Thank you for the VS Sony. Looking at both sides by side, my heart registered FTs as what was in the Cartoon eventhough I know TT is more accurate. I agree with your assessment that TT takes this VS, but I also believe we are looking at apples to oranges here. TT is a VW Golf R as FT is an older 911, for 70% of the Community TT will take it, for the other 30% (including you and I) it will always be FTs...Conclusion, TT wins the Mind, FT wins the Heart...as Bobby always says, "If you like it, You win."
Great review, brother(per usual). It would be awesome if you added an extra point section for “toon accuracy” in alt mode as well. (before the “build” point section). Cheers!
One thing that stands out hugely that wasn't even touched on in the monologue, but is evident in the shot being used in the last 2 minutes - FT has _so_ many more screw holes. Looks like he's been hit with buckshot! 3 on the kneecap, 3 on the thigh, 3 on the lower leg... _5_ on the forearm and even more on the upper arm, shoulder, etc.? MP-57 robot mode is _impressively_ clean by comparison with just 5 _in total_ visible across all those areas. Wow.
I don't agree with giving alt mode a tie. You already gave Takara the point for gimmicks, which I think are the same as play features. The FTs kills it in the alt mode. The gappy-ness of the Takara takes it out of the running in my opinion. Otherwise I agree with the assessment. Overall, I still prefer Phoenix, but will also be keeping both. Thanks Sony.
I had MP Skyfire on pre-order and it would have been my first non-Diaclone repaint MP since Ironhide, but I had to cancel due to my current finances unfortunately. I really want the mini-figures at some point. That said if I had to only have one it would be Phoenix, which is fortunate since that is my current situation.
Since both are different in height for bot mode. I was interested in seeing which scales better and also wondered if scale is a factor in your versus. IMO the ft-10X would of at least tied with TT. I’m keeping my ft but also have a desire to grab the TT. Thanks for another great video review comparison!
@@TMReviews I was thinking more about the aesthetics - I personally find Phoenix to be a little roided up, whereas MP57 is ever so slightly derpy (think Eligos and Quietus), and I find the face on Phoenix a little too chiselled and MP57's slightly on the simple side.
I'm bothered by all the screw holes on the Fans Toys figure. I don't have either toy, but I would buy the Takara for the gimmicks and accessories alone.
I like minifigs to stand next to the bots if they're the right scale, so you get a good idea of just how big they're supposed to be. Prime in particular is an easy one to measure actual scale in vehicle mode, because the cab section of an FL-84 truck is allegedly exactly 8 feet wide, so the Spike that comes with MP Hound is pretty dang close to being the right size (about 3 quarters as long as the cab's width) to place next to him in either mode. The minifigs from other toys go well with other figures, too, you just have to find the right scaling.
The biggest flaw of Phoenix in my opinion, has always been the non matching red metallic paint on the legs on the original version. Like, why? Why didn't they just use a red that looks like the rest? It's clearly a conscious design decision they made and I've never been able to figure out the point of it.
What's probably not a big deal to most, but drives me crazy is the X version doesn't have the metallic eyes, but the regular version does. X is supposed to be more premium, so it should come with the premium eyes.
Thanks for doing this vs. they both really hit the goal for what they are trying to do. I prefer fts heroic look and will stick with phoenix. Great options for everyone’s preference. Are you planning to look at the siege oversized ko?
Well, that's where Fans Toys is headed as all their latest Transformers are very, very toon accurate. The only reason Phoenix isn't, is because it came out years ago. I, 100%, think that if they were to make Phoenix 2.0, it'll be 10000000% toon accurate and almost untransformable. Some of their transformation sequences are freaking complex and way over engineered. To this day, I still can't get Astrotrain's booster to peg in when in shuttle mode. I just have it sit there on top as they look just fine. I don't even want to talk about Springer as it's overly complex but still very doable.
Maybe I’m the only one but I wish they would include far less accessories and offer a cheaper figure. Sure they’re nice, but I don’t need all that stuff and won’t change the display weekly to show them all off. Give me the figure and a gun and that’s all. That said, your comparison reviews are fantastic and logical where as some others that do these seem to have a lot of attitude, aggression, and more subjective than objective. So keep it up.
Either figure works in any collection. Simular to the new magic Square prime vs the mp 54. Either figure works. Of course, toon accuracy is the deal breaker
Honestly both great figures. FT Phoenix definitely fits well in the older MP aesthetic like MP-08, MP-10, and MP-13. Takara fits better with the newer aesthetic like MP-44, Robot Paradise Acoustic Wave, MP-45. I’m personally a toon guy so it’s Takara for me. My favorite part was how they engineered the wings. Most Skyfire/Jetfire toys have the wing tips folded back along the rest of the wing and I prefer Tamara’s take here.
For some reason the goofy face of the Takara Skyfire reminds me of Buzz Lightyear. I'd have liked an extra face that really has a menacing expression, but sadly the al is even more dopey
Landing gear seems to have always been a problem for Takara, MP24 Starsaber's V-Star front landing gears can and will collapse under the weight almost immediately out the box. And the gaptastic jet mode combined with that should easily enable the FT to take the jet mode. (Takara's jet mode features really should've been wrapped in under the gimmicks) Outside of the gimmicks, I'm still struggling to see what MP57 Skyfire does that Siege Jetfire and FT10 Phoenix didn't already do and/or do better. Especially when there's an oversized KO of Siege Jetfire on the way that's less than half the price of both MP57 Skyfire and FT10 Phoenix...
This is my subjective opinion, but TT allows you to display in g1 jet mode with split backpack and mounted gun, for me this is like two figures in one and kept them in the running for alt mode
@@TMReviews Ahhh, that's a great point. (Don't the NewAge & Magic Square ones do that, too?) Hopefully Takara can take a chance and do a MP57+ toy color repaint with the the G1 face already in place over the smiling face.
It has been almost 40 years of transformers but for some reason the guys couldnt figure out how to give mp skyfire a waist swivel. I'm still trying to wrap my mind around the fact that the legends versions of skyfire would absolutely wipe the floor with any of the mp versions.
Only thing I can't agree with is the price win for FT , it should go to takara because of all that you get for that $270 the overall package, but great comparison
The saggy wings on the Takara really bother me. There had to have been a more robust way to do the joint or foldability. The Fanstoys' wings are nice and straight.
I was thinking getting the Takara for plane mode as FT looks better as a bot. But the Takara doesn’t look to good as a plane also. Especially from the front the part that should look the best. What FT won at cost. Lol
Agreed, especially the materials being so solid. Maybe they just lowered our expectations so much that now we are surprised when they make something this good 😂
I have Phoenix, and for me, its best mode is the Alt Mode. that massive jet just looks beautiful. I'm getting MP-57 for the robot mode. I just love the way the chest curves upward. It gives it more dimension and personality. The one knock I have it no hip swivel and those thighs are just straight sticks with no sculpt to them. Similar to the seekers.
I'm going with MP-57 Skyfire but if it were just a bit taller with better faceplates, it'd be pretty much ideal in my eyes. I'm also pleasantly surprised by the price even though it would've cost more if it had been fully-painted.
Phoenix is too boxy and bulky looking, and all those screw holes are off putting. MP-57 looks very clean and much more G1 accurate. Like Skyfire before hitting the PED's.
yeah cartoon accuracy is a weird category when both arent gonig for the cartoon look. it actually penalizes (in this case fanstoys) non-toon aesthetic. good comp though
sorry but the masterpiece looks horrible. the original g1 art was silly and goofy. A G1 transformers MP figure should look cartoon accurate but not at the expense of the aesthetic and look of the figure. for example optimus primal is a really dumb goofy-looking figure, but the masterpiece optimus primal looks amazing, and not so cartoon accurate that it jeopardized the look of the figure this one easily goes to fans' toys for me. another Takara L
I couldn’t agree more in every single category. I really think these two figures hit what they are striving to be. Robot mode goes to Takara..., alt mode goes to FansToys! Bot mode is what I care about most, so I'm glad I waited for the Takara version.
If you averaged the characteristics of both figures, I think that would be the ideal figure.
Agreed, I think if FT had the added articulation and maybe a good flight stand it would be the ultimate
