Agreed. I remember a pretty successful gaming channel once saying that they wanted to promote other content makers, but it was difficult - it was like they were saying hey, this is weird territory, but we'll try to promote someone else now and then. I cold be wrong, but the way I took it was that they saw other creators in their space as competitors more than community. Just my opinion.

I will say, after years in the big surf, and getting stuck in the “washing machine” under big dumpers, the only thing experience gives is the ability to not panic. But this guys situation. I had a pretty cool but dangerous experience once while body surfing in foul bay in Barbados once. We were told not to go beyond knee depth because the undertow was very bad and three people had been lost recently who didn't obey the signs. a few girls in our group were getting too far out and I knew how to body surf pretty okay. I was doing so in waves that were crashing pretty frequent and about 5 to 6 foot tall. one girl got her foot stuck in the rushing sandy bottom and was taken under by a wave and couldn't stand up from the frequency of the waves. I was a little further out than her and was catching a wave and was able to get to her and grab her by the arm and pull her up above a wave so she could breath. when the next wave hit I threw her up ahead of me again and took the wave up to her but had to dig my feet in so I didn't lose her behind me. After about 4 waves I got her out of the surf and on the beach. We all left after that.

    • @cosmiccharlie8006
      @cosmiccharlie8006 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

He swam far, good thing hes in good shape and well trained at what he does because that situation pushed him to his limits. Im glad he persevered and overcame this scenario.
One thing is this is not 50 foot waves. It's easy for non surfers to miscalculate wave height. This is 8-12 ft face waves OR 4-6 ft hawaiian scale (in hawaii waves are measured from the back of the wave, not the face height).
For many, those waves are beyond their capabilities, but for expert surfers and watermen, the wave height aren't that big. BUT I have to say the waves are not his risk in this situation, hes well experienced in waves of consequence and this size or bigger. The current, no accessibility in or out of the water, caves, strong currents and long swim back to a safe place to exit are his biggest dangers here.
Not only did he suffer and near death ordeal after being pushed into a cave, he had to plan a way out and time it perfectly AND then swim home well over a mile.
Caves in rock shelfs and reefs are somewhat common. The most famous surfing wave and one of the most dangerous, "pipeline" in hawaii is notorious for pockets, holes and "caves" in the reef and when powerful 6-25 foot waves are pushing you into an underwater hole/cave in the reef and holding you in there, it can turn deadly fast. Many have tragically died there, although not necessarily from that scenario.
Regardless, this is an amazing video that ive watched countless times.

There's a lot of skepticism in the (online) surfing world about this video based on a few glaring holes in his story and his presentation. How is it he has a camera? How did he get in the cave? Without injury? The surges inside the cave don't correspond to the size (power) of surf in the exterior footage. How is it the person on the shore is filming his exit 2+ hours later; why were there not an emergency response crew there? Are we to believe the person on land filming sat there twiddling his thumbs for hours, lens trained on possible areas of shoreline?
The surfer is supremely impressive in what he legitimately does. But to surfers with experience in rocky shores and big waves, these are glaring questions and his comments are turned off.

There are no words.....watching this I was in awe. The Son of the Sea deserves some ultimate respect. The endurance and determination it must have taken to hold on inside that cave and not to get smashed up on the rocks for over 2 HOURS!!!... Only to have swim out of the cave not knowing when the next surge will come, then swim back out of all that intense surf for 2 km... Wow. My jaw was on the floor.
I grew up swimming in white water rapids on the Petawawa river and all over Ontario Canada and the current in some of those rivers is unbelievable and very humbling. I can't even imagine dealing with 100 foot waves. The volume of water crashing down on you would be almost immeasurable and just absolutely insane. It doesn't matter how tough you think you are or how powerful a swimmer, the power of mother nature is a constant reminder that we as humans are so unbelievably insignificant.
Gus, you need to get in touch with this guy and have a zoom chat or a Skype call and pick his brain for some crazy stories and how he trains for stuff like this. I would love to hear more about this real life Aquaman.. I've also been to Tofino on the West coast of Canada for some storm watching and the immense power of the ocean blew my mind. It was amazingly terrifying and I can't say I saw anything bigger that 30-50 feet. For this man to swim in waters like these. I'd be thrilled and honored to shake his hand.

10:33 filming from the beach sudently the camera get underwater
10:38 filming maybe the entry of the cave from another angel
10:51 note the position is safe cause he is hidden from the current stream
10:58 pause and look at the source of light !!! and it is big one .... he only talk about the small hole where water come from ...
11:20 the source is even more visible
11:25 note how the light is changing when he took the camera up to this point
11:41 he took the camera to shaded area and point it up on the rock ... normaly we will see light passing the blue water with all the source of light
11:48 you can see his body already above the water and the angle of rotation is visible if you play the video slowly...
13:15 now he direct himself to the big hole
13:22 now he can get out and just set...
13:33 look at the big hole there ...
    13:45 closer look
14:03 he didn't think about filming the dangerous moment of risking his life to get out , he just got out by teleportation or something
14:10 you can see the sea level and compar with his position and note that he film always on the safe zone
14:15 multiple camera angle or multiple shots but in different places
14:24 that was epic but risky and this is the only unsuspected real risky shot in the video in my opinion
14:33 another day ,another place ,another camera angle ... again !!!!
14:55 look at the waves guys please look at the camera angle is this the same cliff ????????????????
sorry for my poor language "english is my 4th"
all this analyses are my own opinion i can be wrong but now i'm 100% sure i'm right
please review the video ... brothers i did some sea cave exploration before and my head just touched the sealing that was painful and everything is sharpppp if the wave really pushed something inside the cave i think it's gonna hit the walls and broke to peaces ... you are cave divers you that better than me and you may know speleologists (helmets and safety gears)

I’ve done such silly things. The difference was the cave entrance was bigger. We had been in the cave before when the surf was basically flat. We had a tough time getting out, when we went in when the surf was 6ft. This guy was insane to be out there, in such big waves.

  • @AnonZapata9

I'll say this. I've been a body surfer ( never have board surfed in my life), for over 2 decades. Mostly Zipolite Mexico and the Dominican Republic. I call regular surfers "floaters" cause they miss so many good waves waiting around for waves. But you can get so many more without a board. There is nothing like it. Viva Hijo del Mar. What an incredible dude

You should watch “The 100 foot wave” it’s a six part documentary on HBO featuring Garrett McNamara and how he made Nazare (the huge wave that was surfed at the beginning of this episode)…. You’ll see tons of amazing waves and surfers.

Nazare is really special because of it's underwater canyons that jack up those swells to that level. It's hard to believe, even though you are looking right at it. Huge respect for anyone who charges in there! Yes Gus, the jet ski pilots too.

I don't dive let alone cave dive. It's far down my todo list.
That said, for some reason I really enjoy your channel and approach to demystifying the particulars and misconceptions of your hobby/profession. As a rock climber I can see so many parallels in how to mitigate potential problems to the point where it can be a very safe activity even for newbies so long as you recognize your limitations (and the limitations of your gear) and keep well back from them.
I also like the way you guys approach your videos without excess hyperbole just to try and impress everybody and are humble enough to acknowledge that there is more to learn than what you know, which is a fatal trap for experienced people who become instructors in any potentially dangerous endeavour.
Keep it up, and hope you guys get a ton of subs without resorting to appealing overtly to people's short attention spans as is the current norm.

Wow! what a risk. Fanny is that I saw this video three days ago. And just a comment: bodysurfing is AWSOME! Its so fun! Its a great sensation. Also there is something interesting, there is an apparatus that he wasnt using, a very little size board, just to put in one hand, here in Brasil we call it "palmar" in some places. This apparatus helps by adding more control to the ride. Love Dive Talks! Thank you guys! (And sorry if my english got bad 😂😂😂)

Holy crap, I didn't even know it was possible to body surf waves that big. Or just to swim in oceans that rough against a rocky shore. O_O What a beast, dang!
I am glad you guys give credit to the guy in the video. I hope this dude didn't get badly hurt, but I guess if he swam back, he was okay, just shaken. Don't know how the heck he managed to make it out with everything stacked against him!
Like the video where Gus goes into this woman's credentials, and puts emphasis on how she has tons of experience and the group she swims for, even if she had a panic moment in the reaction video.
Even pros make mistakes or suffer accidents out of their control

Man, I started to comment on how the video was edited together. But then I realized the surfers you showed were just to show the place. But I thought he was going to body surf the waves from the beginning? Those are once a decade waves. That would have been INSANE. He’s never on a hundred foot wave in any part of this video though. Not anywhere even remotely close to the waves the surfers were on. Still a cool video. Glad he’s living his best life and he got out OK. I think the way you presented the video was why I was expecting so much more. This just looks like waves guys body surf in Hawaii and other spots on the regular. Anyway? Don’t take it the wrong way. Love your guys videos and I don’t even dive. You’re making me want to try it though. Especially having grown up in the South Bay of Los Angeles. Keep up the good work guys.

these big wave surfers and body surfers are on a different planet when it comes to badass-ness. they also tend to do a TON of training in preparation for being held down for really long periods of time due to a wipe out. they’re superhuman when it comes to staying under and holding their breath.

Insane!!! So the guy filming him from the shore AND hrs later when he emerged, didn't call the Rescue Services when he got swallowed in that cave.. though even a helicopter rescue would be perilous/impossible in those conditions. Filming angles after exit 14:19 (swimming back home) imply drone footage. His film buddy wouldn't know if/when he'd emerge. So did he tell him: 'Just keep filming mate.'

In fairness, Nazareth videos are usually shot with a perspective/scaling trick. The lighthouse and camera are on a cliff overlooking the wave, therefore you can see the wave appearing "above" the lighthouse... not accurate its always lower than the lighthouse.
Furthermore the bird eye perspective allows the camera to pick up sea foam trails leading into the wave which from a level perspective would only be visible on the face(near vertical surface). These trails give the false impression that you are looking at the wave face of Nazareth when you are actually looking at the face combined with the leading trough giving the wave a much larger appearance.
That being said, it's still one of the tallest waves in the world and to know people surf that is absolutely bonkers.

I’ve timed myself and can hold my breath for 2:27, but when I get in a pool or swim in any way, that time becomes 1 minute even. It’s hard to accurately tell how hard a situation is (as far as holding breath) until you are in it. Add water, stress, and exertion, that time becomes less and less
