DIVER LEFT STRANDED AT SEA RECORDS HIS "FINAL HOURS"

  • Jacob Childs was stranded 30 nautical miles from shore and can hear rescue helicopters looking for him but at the same time he watches helplessly the sun going down and darkness begins to fill the sky. He knows that if he's not found before night fall he might not make it through the night, so he decides to record his "final hours" with his GoPro.
At some point, after hours of floating out in the middle of the ocean he takes a moment to analyze his situation, he knows he's in a tough spot. With the camera recording he utters what can potentially be his "Final Words": "So that's it. The sun goes down they won't do nothing. That's a wrap on old Jakey".
We react to the video and discuss what can we learn from incidents such as this one in order to make diving safer.

of course he survived. He was only 30 miles off shore and he had a flotation device. The fact that he thought he was doomed is hilarious. A human can swim about 5 miles an hour. Cut that in 1/2, and that means he only had 1/2 a day of swimming to get back to shore. Unless he was right in the center of a particularly unforgiving major ocean current, he could just calmly swim and make progress even while taking breaks. I would be worried and scared for sure, but in no way would I assume to be doomed.

7 years ago, I was diving in Galapagos. I was a frequent diver and it was an amazing dive with lots of hammerheads and other sharks but unfortunately I struggled with my buoyancy, lost the group and ended up on the surface..
So there I was, in the middle of the ocean, didn’t see the boat or anything but water and had no clue what to do..
I decided to try my luck and dive back down to find the group.
Until this day, I have no clue how I found the group (and my clueless buddy) and I know for a fact they hadn’t noticed my absence..
This story gives me the chills; I was so extremely blessed to came back in one piece.
I never dived again which is bittersweet because I loved it..
    Thanks for reading ❤

I once did a dive in Italy, it was a fun dive for first-timers that was arranged by the travel organisation. There was a language barrier as the instructors didn't speak English very well. A friend of mine kept saying she didn't get air when they went under. They kept pushing her under, ignoring/not understanding what she said and she started panicking more and more, signaling she wanted to quit. She went back to shore, as we proceeded with the dive. Turns out her air tank was empty. Another girl had problems with her suit, it wouldn't inflate so she sunk straight to the bottom. The instructors went on with the dive, apparently not noticing she didn't follow. She walked all the way back to shore over the ocean floor, alone. I kept thinking: what if she also would have had the empty tank? It was a bloody mess. This reminded me. It must have been so scary to be all alone in the ocean like that!

This same thing happened to my and my friend in FL. We were left with our instructor after a check out dive for Advanced NAUI. The dive boat was also running tethered snorkelers and the anchor slipped and the boat drifted - Gulf Stream. When we surfaced the boat was on the horizon. We had a surface swim to catch-up of ~2 miles. When we reached it the instructor went to 'talk' to the skipper and we did a headcount of the snorkelers. They were short. We geared up again and conducted a search ultimately finding a couple clinging to each other. This was in the late 90's. The operator is no longer in business. We were happy to be alive.

Everyone in America who works on a boat that does anything with the public has to be on a mandatory random drug program and this guy should have been immediately tested for everything soon as he stepped onshore. This is a reason for having the random drug testing by the coast guard to prevent these types of incidents from hopefully never happening the captain of the boat could lose his license for taking paid customers and me “working” without being enrolled. My husband and I lost our diving group after a cave dive in the Belize. The visibility was horrible as the seas were extremely rough that day. We had to wait about an hour to be retrieved in huge waves. Luckily we could see the dive boat far in the distance when we were at the top of the waves so it was more an annoying situation than panic inducing. Funniest part was every single time my fin touched my husband’s leg, he’d freak out and look around for what deadly creature touched him. 😂

Since getting separated from our boat a few years back, we now carry emergency beacon locators too. We flip a latch and push a button and it signals our location on emergency broadcast. It can be used on land or in water. We also carry a flare gun with flares in the pocket of our BCs in a dryloc bag. We got separated from our boat because the dive flag floating on the surface, attached to our reel we were hand carrying underwater, came untied from the top of the rope as it floated out from the reel. We tied those knots ten years before and never checked them again and used it on many dives. It never occurred to us to check the knots securing the surface flag. Since the flag was floating on the surface, our daughter on the boat followed the flag which moved with the current. When we surfaced we were a few miles from any boat and shore. After an hour, a boat came by close enough for us to signal with our safety sausage and picked us up.

When I was a 7/8yr old kid, I learned that I’m not a fish with gills by a really close call to drowning. I took swimming lessons for several years, then figured why not be able to breathe underwater, so I became a certified diver. I wish everybody had at least one diving experience to feel how amazing it is. No matter how many times I’ve gone scuba diving, it always amazed and astonished me to look down only to see a massive steel ship or wooden vessel just sitting there below me. It’s not a normal perspective people typically have.

Also in Australia, two divers left by their dive team who did die. The two divers, an American couple, a male and female were only noticed missing by their dive crew two days later. Nothing of their remains were found. The movie Open Water is based on their story.

These group dive operations should use the systems that are used at skischools - helps them keep track of where the kids are and when they get back to a meeting area - they get scanned and checked in on a list. Should get a little tag that they scan for going in the water then scan upon entry back to the boat.

The couple weren’t newbie divers either. Scuba diving and snorkeling are huge in the US, and we have strict laws regarding scuba certification and diving safety in general.
Any American diver knows that the east coast of Australia is top tier diving, but also dangerous. It’s where all the best divers go.

I got caught in strong underwater currents on a wreck dive. Charter boat was on a mooring above and when i had all but exhausted my air fighting the ever increasing currents, I decided to be safe and surface from a depth of just over one hundred feet. Little did I realise just how far i had drifted. When I broke the surface there was no boat. I had drifted some way past it and panicked before i thought to turn back round and look behind me. It was some way off about four hundred metres away. I remember one of the crew frantically trying to communicate the 'OKAY' signal to me. I remember frantically returning it with arms high over my head!. Have to be honest. Shit myself the minute I surfaced and realised the boat wasn't where I thought it was supposed to be. Its s dreadful feeling.
