Leaky Fibreglass Boat with a Broken Motor... Can it be fixed??

  • I saw this old Bonito craft 4.9 with a Suzuki 85hp outboard for auction, it didn't meet reserve so I made an offer and got it for $1100 NZD. These boats are $8-12k in good condition.
There is a hole in the hull, the trailer is rusty and the outboard hasn't run for 6 years. I can't resist a challenge...

What do you think of using waxes or silicons to prevent corrosion in the water jackets? Silicons reduce heat transfer and so can cause cars to boil over, but I doubt they will reduce it so much as to overheat a boat engine. actually I have tried it 2 or 3 times with no trouble.
I also do what he did, run them in a bucket, but I intentionally try to get the cooling system to suck up as much used 2 stroke oil from the bucket as possible and use it to line the water jacket.

Never trusted Suzuki outboards. My 65 hp left me stranded several times and seldom worked right. Ended up buying the CDI brain module which cost $300. Had other problems after that so gave up and sold the boat and motor. My 200hp Johnson on the other hand worked perfectly for the 20+ years I owned it and it frequently went out 30-40 miles into the ocean on fishing trips. Glad you got yours running, hope it continues to run well.

Watching Marty clean those carburetors reminds me of how much trouble I have had in the past getting carburetors cleaned, adjusted and working properly. I have alot of equipment and vehicles still using carburetors. Watched one guy on YT who uses a blast cabinet with baking soda to do the initial cleaning. Then finishes up with an ultrasonic cleaner using a degreaser. I have a sand blast cabinet and recently bought a 30 ml ultrasonic cleaner so will be doing some experimenting with those. My first victim is a Holley 4150 4 barrel from my Chevy tandem axle.

Very correct Marty. You can never have too many boats.
I just gave my Siren 17 sailboat away the other day. Just making room for the MacGregor 19 I hope to get this fall/ winter.
    Good job.

I live in the UK, if I get a problem with my Skoda Yeti engine, I am going to ship it over to Marty. It will not only be quicker to resolve but a lot cheaper as well! You right never enough boats!

I told my wife that my ideal vacation would be to spend 2 weeks helping you fix the trash treasure you buy. She rolled her eyes and said I was crazy, I told her only a doctor can make that assessment. 😁.

ok, i have to admit to being a little dissapointed when Marty breaks out the carb sync gauges. I kinda expected him to use the classic, stick a tube in your ear and tune by the level of "hiss" from each venturi method........ ;-)

Outboard is definitely something that you want to run well. Two vehicles that need reliable engines, boats and airplanes.

You can never have enough boats. N+10. Love it. My wife has the same issue with the 10 push bikes I have...the conversation always end quickly when we talk about how many shoes and handbags she has lol 😂
