Every flood season the big old trees would catch all kinds of things from up river. boats, canoe paddles, even an entire house one year. as a kid it was great fun in the spring to canoe over and look for treasure.
    Last word I had, one flood season the whole island got washed a couple of miles down river.

    My brother and I found a boat in the same situation when we were teenagers. We were duck hunting and ran across this half flooded aluminum boat with a motor on it. We bailed it out and towed it to the launch. Same deal, owners had already submitted for insurance, so, we got to keep it. We had lots of good years on that boat afterwards. It was a beater and we used it hard on Humboldt Bay in California.

    Careful the reason why the guy didn't want the boat back is simple. Its no longer his boat once the Insurance company pays out.
    If he took it back he would have to pay the Insurance company for it. So in that kind of situation its always best to phone the old fuzz.

    If the original owner has claimed the insurance then they haven't got the legal authority to give it away to you. They may say that "they don't want it back" but it's still property of their Insurance company until they deed it to you.
    Don't put any more effort into repairing it until you report it to police and get the insurance to waive all claims to it.

    • @KubotaManDan
      @KubotaManDan 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Your correct that the insurer should have been notified of the recovery ( I have 18 yrs Insurance claims experience ) but there is a reward for the party that makes the salvage. (Marty) but that would be made by the insurance company & not necessarily by the boat owner. The language of the policy will give the details. The owner of the boat may have violated his contract with his insurance carrier & his policy could be terminated. Granted the boats a piece of crap & this accident could have been staged by the owner to get a new replacement on the Insurance carriers dime.
      Who ties a mooring with thin cotton rope? Found a NL article to back up my concerns : astrolabesailing.com/2016/02/14/all-you-ever-wanted-to-know-about-salvage/

      @@marksbikeexports5123 It's not as simple as "finders keepers" which many seem to wrongly believe. NZ law requires the authorities be notified promptly. However the relevant government body seems to be in some disarray presently as it happens.
      By all means though, go ahead and trust in cultural folklore.

    I’ve seen people coat the inside with some truck bedliner to help with some of those leaks. I’ve seen mixed results, but I think that comes down the level of prep work to make it stick. The bedliner is usually some pretty tough stuff. Great score and a very cool little boat! I would almost thing for some slow trolling and checking for mussels and traps the back troll outboard may be better than front controls.

    I used to live in that region, and I also had a 3.7m alloy boat with 9.9 hp Yamaha o/b motor. To get it planing I extended the tiller arm with a length of pvc pipe, with end slits, and a jubilee clamp to hold it on. I sat on the middle bench, and that boat fair flew along. I hope Marty uses the boat to troll for kahawai (in season). Once bled in the time-honoured tradition it makes a very tasty raw fish dish prepared in the Polynesian style.

    • @elmariachi5133
      @elmariachi5133 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I'd think it's similar to cars: The insurance paying you when the boat gets lost or stolen, probably isn't the same as the obligate insurace you need in case you hurt someone else or damage someone else's property with your boat. The later one is obligate, while the former one is optional.
