I was thinking the same thing. I grew up on an apple orchard and my grandfather and dad ran a car dealership. I didn’t know what to do first when I got out of school: play in my tree house or fiddle with old rusty cars.

It might be worth replacing the rubber mounts for the transfer case, they are known to break under heavy load! The drivetrain is going to thank you if you put on 4 of the same tires

When i was a kid, i had a childhood like this, such great memories. I was driving old tractors at the age of 6 and learnt to drive the old landrover at 8. Life on a farm was great.
I owned two of these back-to-back in the 90's as a second car. They were great for what they were, cheap transportation and fun mountain trail scrabbling. But the ride....oh, my. Terrible. I was glad when I could finally afford something better. But no real bad things to say about them. I'm afraid my standard now is too lofty to go back to that level. Nice blast from the past, though. Good memories of fun mountain climbing times. Thanks for that!
A buddy of mine had one. Another friend in college had one as well. Suzuki made good engines but little else. These things weren't very good on the road and were downright unsafe at speeds greater than 50 -- mainly due to having to make quick lane changes if necessary. But you're right: if you kept these things either as a local neighborhood or a farm/ranch vehicle, they were fine.
My first car was a suzuki like this, just another color. On 4x4 it was climbing everywhere on the mountains around my home town. I had a lot of fun with it. You have quite good helping hands growing up there. 👍

I am so glad you mentioned a scrapyard - your videos seemed to imply that everybody in NZ dumped their old vehicles in the forest somewhere for you to retrieve and get running. Your wife must be a saint to put up with the stream of things you resurrect. The skill shown would be epic in a garage but so much work seems to be done in the jungle or in the garden with minimal tools.
my brother had one on his ranch. we used it to check the fence line and check the herd and such. damm nice little truck.. id rather have one of these than a side by side any day of the week...

Install propane kit, 4.16 to 1 transfercase gears, weld the rear, locrite locker in front press on some chromoly birfield rings on front axles, and a set of revolving shackles front and rear for a few inch lift and its already a little monster… those stock carbs REALLY REALLY SUCK TO TAKE APART AND GET WORKING AGAIN.. throw them away and go for another option or go propane. It always runs and never fails on propane😎 Edit: had to come to say i also run 5.13 gears in rear ends from a geo tracker or suzuki sidekick and it take two front ends to do front and rear on sami, the tracker/sidekick rear ends are larger so you must find two fronts to slam in… or if you take a rear samurai housing apart and cut the axle tubes off and do the same to tracker rear and weld the samurai axle tubes to the tracker rear housing amd then you now have a hybrid rear end and can run the larger stronger gear set in the rear. You can also use tracker or sidekick drive shaft yokes, they take the same size u-joint but have a larger flange and larger bolts so they stop coming loose and shearing off… the list goes on and on, these little things can be made to do a lot and never break a thing. Tracker 1.6 8 valve and transmission works great too but need toyota axles so the pinion is in center for driveshaft… samurai rear is offset and tracker sidekick toyota are in the center on the rear axle… so much can be done a so much fun to be had while doing it… also if you dont offroad this thing just put the 5.13 gears in the rear ends and you will be able to use 5th gear on the highway stock is 3.73 on samurai rear ends and 2.27-1 on the transfer case, so the 5.13 gears really help.
That A12 brings back memories of a 1200 I had. The idle was the same. From memory there was a slow run emulsion tube, with very small openings, that would frequently block causing it. I only stopped fixing that when I sold the car.
Fun times with the kids, they sure are growing fast. A few years ago my son thought he'd be clever and wash his nice Impreza with my water blaster. He too used the dirt blaster, until the beautiful white pearl paint started coming off- oh no
Have you seen *the Gold Nugget?* It is an old gold prospectors Suzuki that was trapped in the woods of California for a couple of decades, until some friends decided to rescue it. Lots of TH-camrs got together and rebuilt it for the old prospector. It was a cool build. Best of luck with yours. They look like lots of fun.

I had a Suzuki Caribbean in Thailand in the late 80's. A great vehicle! I drove all over the country without issues! later I changed the engine to a 1.8 Toyota engine and boy that did the trick! So much so that I had to install a roll cage!!

She bought her new and still going strong too ! She had motor rebuilt , carb , Alternator, Starter, Choke cable knob , Clutch plate , bearings , transmission all done , transfer case , drive shafts , axles, exhaust , Rad recore to , Heater core , tires , brake all it , emergency brake cable to and bit on electrical too ! She got tons kms on hers !
grate cheap 4x4 had 4 of them over the years and still use 03 year today thats 20years old , think this will be the last one , they r a great cheap small 4x4 small track job , well done bringing back to life
I had pretty much this exact same scenario a few weeks ago with a 1985 Nissan Patrol MQ sd33t. All I did was put a battery in it and some air in the tires and it fired up near first crank! It had sat in a shed and hadn’t moved in 10 years and I drove it out like I’d put it there the day before.
The Suzuki SJ410! Had a pair of these back in the early 2000's. Proper little rot boxes, but would get you anywhere & everywhere off-road. 1000cc Billy goats🐐
These little devils seem to soldier on, pity they suffer from corrosion. Engine complete with Lucas alternator, sounded very sweet. Great to see your young ones so interested and involved. Lifelong happy memories for them and you.
You might want to look at series of videos done by some guys here in the US on one of these old suzuki's look for the "Golden Nugget" restoration by Robie Layton, Matt's off-Road Recovery and Fab Rats. It had been trapped by a land slide in remote California 30 years ago. They recovered it, even floating it down a river for some sections, and fully restored it. Was even displayed at SEMA.
Your daughter looks to be about the same age as mine was when she first sat behind the wheel of my Suzuki Samurai and started driving it. (same vehicle as yours) It took a bit, but she was able to figure out how to use the clutch. I always told them I wasn't teaching them how to drive, just operate a vehicle. That didn't make sense to them until they took driving lessons when they were 16. That's when they realized how much more they needed to know in order to drive on the street....
oh man what a joy seeing Dad and the kids working together, their childhood memories will be great, makes me miss my kids now that they're grown up and gone 😔 but I do get to spoil the grandkids every now and then, the Suzuki was just waiting.. hoping for this moment.
Retrieved a small boat with a similar Suzuki from a muddy creek, in the middle of this operation one of the universal joints on the rear drive shaft exploded. I went under it to investigate and could not believe how tiny the drive shaft and universals were. I took the drive shaft right out and we made it home in front wheel drive. The old chap who owned it got some modifications done and fitted larger drive shafts and u j's, after that it ran well for him until the engine died a couple of years later, by then it was pretty rusty anyway and it was sent to the wreckers.

I had a Sammy, 465,000 miles 2 motors, 2 transmissions, one transfer case and one rear driveshaft, it was a great value . It was blazingly slow, handled like a dump truck with 6 flat tires. Drove across the country twice over 20 years. Good little vehicle!

Of all the crusty vehicles i have worked on over the years i have never seen a pinion bearing shot like that. Mostly seals though. You might need some extra weather protection if you take it out for a drive. A sudden downpour might be a wee bit miserable😂. Maybe rebody the thing or make it into a family offroad toy. Engine sounds great, only problem I ever had over a long time of owning the 1400 engine is the carb, has a built-in pump that gets pitted from corrosion.👍
Yes it's a common problem, came across someone who fitted a sleeve in mine and it didn't fail again. The after market replacement carb I first tried didn't last so wouldn't recommend it.

I had two SJ410 Suzukis, and had a lot of adventures with them, both in 4WD club trips and trials, and private adventures. One was a long wheelbase ute that had been fitted with a Mitsubishi 1800 motor and gearbox, which went very well. I fitted a Mitsubishi 1600 to the short wheelbase one and added independent wheel brakes on the back axle, beadlock rims, a roll cage, cut the guards to allow bigger tyres etc. It was a fun and capable little truck. The only modification needed to the Mitsubishi motors was to add float bowl vent extension tubes to the carburettors so fuel didn't spill at high lean angles.. apart from that they ran well standard. Despite the larger motors and some enthusiastic driving, the transfer cases, driveshafts, diffs and axles survived (to my surprise!) although I did have to replace u-joints occasionally... If you keep the 410, I have wheel brake brackets and master cylinders, a reconditioned Mitsubishi 1760 motor I was going to put in the SWB truck but never did, pre-rolled hoops to convert standard steel wheels to beadlocks, and a few parts, here in Otaki. If any of that could be useful to you, let me know...
@@MartyT A friend had a pair of Suzuki diffs, complete with housings and brakes. Not sure whether 410 or 413. I will ask. Otherwise Dan Cowper at Turakina near Wanganui used to wreck Suzuki 4WDs and may have something.
Cool. Love to see a follow up vid. The roof would look good with box liner and would seal it up. I would watch 2 vids. One one getting it sorted mechanically with the new rims and another where it's prettied up and gone through inside. I'm jealous.

Will this be Marty's version of the "Golden Nugget"? ( a similarly modelled Suzuki restored by Utah youtubers. MORR, Fab Rats and Robby Layton Nation) From memory the Golden Nugget spent 40 years trapped by a landslide and it's initial recovery saw it dragged down a river underwater. A series of videos later (and a whole lot of dollars) It was fully restored to concourse condition. Perhaps Marty's could be the "Rusty Nugget"?😄😄 Another great find and a compliment to your skillset.
I never thought of a Datsun motor as a transplant but it's an excellent choice. A push rod motor is the best choice for one of these vehicles. Put a towing cam in it and it'll pull really well.
A decent rear diff kit for that Sammy is under a 100bux, and it only takes a few hours to r&r the diff and bearings, install the new crush sleeve,and loc tite it all down.. Sammy's are fun little off road vehicles and actually very capable with the manual transmissions often being their weak point... Never seen one with a Datsun engine in it though ,not in the USA anyhoo..
I have not watched more than 3 minutes and can say YES, it will start and drive. When I worked om mine, I used a bumper jack to lay the car on the side for easy access. I tried for a whole hour to trash and roll over my Suzuki Samurai SJ413. It kept keeping on. Until the police came.

Haha good work Marty! Geese that alternator sounds healthy, that's worth the recovery alone. Hot tip, I worked on carbys for years, rev it up and slap your hand on the top of the carby, it will often suck crap thru blocked jets (like low speed or idle jet), I'm looking for one of these Suzuki chassies to put under my 57 Morris Ute body. I like the way your kids agree with you when you are commenting. Keep up the good work mate!!

Being an early 1l model this will have the factory bolt through mounts, they're unbreakable and a much better design than the later models. :)

This is the reason my wife would not let me buy a house with a field. Every time I would get offered something, I would do the same as you.

Great work. I had a Suzuki Samari in the late 80s here in the US. Was a fun little machine but could barely reach highway speed 😂
I had a Sammy, 465,000 miles 2 motors, 2 transmissions, one transfer case and one rear driveshaft, it was a great value . It was blazingly slow, handled like a dump truck with 6 flat tires. Drove across the country twice over 20 years. Good little vehicle!

Of all the crusty vehicles i have worked on over the years i have never seen a pinion bearing shot like that. Mostly seals though.
You might need some extra weather protection if you take it out for a drive. A sudden downpour might be a wee bit miserable😂.
Maybe rebody the thing or make it into a family offroad toy. I know you will think of something 😁😎👍

The old Suzuki sounds pretty good!! Might make a pretty good transportation unit for the property!
Engine sounds great, only problem I ever had over a long time of owning the 1400 engine is the carb, has a built-in pump that gets pitted from corrosion.👍
The accelerator pump that squirts extra fuel to prevent "bog" (hesitation) under acceleration.
The one I had started to bog at 228kms (13 years old).
Yes it's a common problem, came across someone who fitted a sleeve in mine and it didn't fail again. The after market replacement carb I first tried didn't last so wouldn't recommend it.

I had two SJ410 Suzukis, and had a lot of adventures with them, both in 4WD club trips and trials, and private adventures. One was a long wheelbase ute that had been fitted with a Mitsubishi 1800 motor and gearbox, which went very well.
I fitted a Mitsubishi 1600 to the short wheelbase one and added independent wheel brakes on the back axle, beadlock rims, a roll cage, cut the guards to allow bigger tyres etc. It was a fun and capable little truck. The only modification needed to the Mitsubishi motors was to add float bowl vent extension tubes to the carburettors so fuel didn't spill at high lean angles.. apart from that they ran well standard.
Despite the larger motors and some enthusiastic driving, the transfer cases, driveshafts, diffs and axles survived (to my surprise!) although I did have to replace u-joints occasionally...
If you keep the 410, I have wheel brake brackets and master cylinders, a reconditioned Mitsubishi 1760 motor I was going to put in the SWB truck but never did, pre-rolled hoops to convert standard steel wheels to beadlocks, and a few parts, here in Otaki. If any of that could be useful to you, let me know...

@@MartyT A friend had a pair of Suzuki diffs, complete with housings and brakes. Not sure whether 410 or 413. I will ask.
Otherwise Dan Cowper at Turakina near Wanganui used to wreck Suzuki 4WDs and may have something.
Those old Suzuki’s are pretty hard to kill. Good to see kids interested, and getting involved a bit too.

Been into zooks for over 20 years. Had many samurais, and sidekicks. Even desert raced a 2 door sidekick for a bit. always wanted a 410 but they are kinda rare here in the states. thanks for saving her.

got an old Suzuki out on my property, just for tootling around and a bit of fun. Uncared-for, it just won't die. So I knew you'd get this old bucket going.
Will this be Marty's version of the "Golden Nugget"? ( a similarly modelled Suzuki restored by Utah youtubers. MORR, Fab Rats and Robby Layton Nation) From memory the Golden Nugget spent 40 years trapped by a landslide and it's initial recovery saw it dragged down a river underwater. A series of videos later (and a whole lot of dollars) It was fully restored to concourse condition.
Perhaps Marty's could be the "Rusty Nugget"?😄😄

I never thought of a Datsun motor as a transplant but it's an excellent choice. A push rod motor is the best choice for one of these vehicles. Put a towing cam in it and it'll pull really well.
A decent rear diff kit for that Sammy is under a 100bux, and it only takes a few hours to r&r the diff and bearings, install the new crush sleeve,and loc tite it all down.. Sammy's are fun little off road vehicles and actually very capable with the manual transmissions often being their weak point... Never seen one with a Datsun engine in it though ,not in the USA anyhoo..
I have not watched more than 3 minutes and can say YES, it will start and drive.
When I worked om mine, I used a bumper jack to lay the car on the side for easy access.
I tried for a whole hour to trash and roll over my Suzuki Samurai SJ413. It kept keeping on. Until the police came.

Haha good work Marty! Geese that alternator sounds healthy, that's worth the recovery alone. Hot tip, I worked on carbys for years, rev it up and slap your hand on the top of the carby, it will often suck crap thru blocked jets (like low speed or idle jet), I'm looking for one of these Suzuki chassies to put under my 57 Morris Ute body. I like the way your kids agree with you when you are commenting. Keep up the good work mate!!
