Another enjoyable video Marty. Was so beautiful seeing your son make a cameo appearance in the film. Reminded me of my son when he was that age. I don’t have the skills you possess but if ever I was doing maintenance on my vehicles or trying to make something, my son was always there wanting to help. I had a wonderful old neighbour who was a retired builder but made wooden toys and furniture for charity. He was a beautiful and tolerant man and my son would disappear for hours visiting and helping him.

I am so glad you are a fellow Kiwi who has been handed down the ability to fix things with a bit of ingenuity and number eight wire , but it is a lot easier when a great store franchise offers you a full range of their fine products to help you and deservedly so . Where I live, the city simply performs a test drive on the sirens once a month, at the exact same time. Needless to say, I'm quite used to the sound after many years. I simply assumed that was the case in this video as well, so your post opened my eyes somewhat. I guess there are places in the world where there's actual use for the sirens, haha.

Thats another great save from the scrap heap. one of my customers gave me an 1870 Kubota lawn tractor that hadn't run for over 5 years when our 316 Deere puked it's kohler motor. 3 hour on a Friday afternoon and it's been cutting grass all this season, all it needs now is a new oil pan gasket sometime this winter as it's started leaking. To be honest thats the only machine a customers given me that was actually worth the time bringing it home and fixing. The other stuffs been a free scrap removal service for them when I really get into looking at it ! Kinda thinking the people in your new home street are either going to love you fixing broken equipment and helping them out with repairs or hate you for bringing "junk" home lots of times and putting it in the driveway LO.L. I'll pass on the wasps, as well... I can deal with spiders and snakes but not the flying stingers. Nice find here... I did a similar mower back in the 80s, even replacing the tires to a tractor tread to cope with the rougher terrain on the rear reaches of the property. It was all belt-driven, as well, and I recall replacing a pulley and several guide-pins (located outboard of the pulleys) that were worn and allowing belts to jump off. It's rather satisfying to bring something like this back to life. Thanks for a nice flashback.

Great score and quick tune. Don't forget to pop top engine shroud off to make sure cooling fins are clear. Grease nipples for deck bearings are usually on bottom side and if not you can sometimes drill and tap your own in if they are coned bearing holder design. You can also lift steering rack up and jog a few teeth one way to make it turn sharper one way for almost zero turn capabilities. Just have to do that and readjust steering rods. First add on should be a drink holder.

I still have parts of that mower and the engine off one my brother had, on an 1989 model my Dad bought new and used for about 15 years. I haven't used it in about 3 years, but probably could have it working with a couple hours of tinkering.

My dad has a Kohler engine MTD (in Kansas City). It's dark green and the grass-catcher is different. He abuses the heck out of it. In his book, leaving it out in the rain counts as 'cleaning' it, so it counts as 'maintenance'. In spite of his abuse it's been a trouble free mower, supremely effective at clearing up leaves in the Fall..

The mowing deck comes off easily making the drive components easy to get at. Check under engine cowling for wasp and mason bee nests amongst the cooling fins, they build them in there and if not cleaned out the engine can overheat.

Hey Marty I just came across your channel , great job. Someone has probably mentioned this already but I'm not going back through 700 plus comments to find out.
Make sure that you clean the derbies out from behind the shields on the side of the engine at the cylinder's , as grass will build up preventing the fins from cooling. When it overheats it will seize the valves in their guides. Brigg's twins are bad for this. I know I had to learn the hard way.
    Keep up the good work

Nice repair, I had to do a lot of repairs to my old ride on mower too, very satisfying resurrecting broken stuff.

I rebuilt a 42” Cub Cadet earlier this year (made by MTD), and those blade spindle bearings are really cheap. They’re sealed bearings, so I removed the inner seals and filled the cavity between the bearings with grease so they could be degreased when needed. Easy repair and parts readily available from Amazon very cheap. OEM parts are outrageous, and I live where that MTD was made here in Cleveland, Ohio USA. Plenty of TH-cam videos available for rebuilding the deck. Good luck with your new toy!

Thanks, yeah I'll do the bearings when they start showing signs of side to side movement, theyre actually still nice and tight just had moisture in them I guess

I do not presume to teach grandma how to suck eggs, so a couple of points from experience. i) It is worth drilling a hole, tapping it and fitting a grease nipple on the blade bearing housing. Just make sure it points in the right direction when installed. ii) A larger hole on the cutter deck fitted with male hose fitting. When flushed, use your sucky-blow to dry it, then a dribble of your favourite no-rust goo, also with blade/s spinning. Wet grass clippings are almost as bad as cow shit and fertiliser for rust. You know all this, Marty, but someone else might take a tip.

You're a better man than I am...there's no way I'd put that much work into an MTD machine. :)

Yeah, I thought at first, what's Marty doing with that cordless drill, then rewatched. Every home should have one.

I used to run a small Toro rider with a hard shell leaf & grass clipping catcher very similar to this one. It was very easy to empty. I would collect a load of leaves from the lawn and then just drive through the woods and dump it on the fly without even slowing down. It was brilliant.
