  • I saw an old David Brown 30c with multiple issues on marketplace so I grabbed it for $200 for parts. The rims will fit my db25 and are in much better condition, before I strip it for parts I'll see if I can get it running.

    The oil draining hurt my soul.. That's one of those instances I would fill it up with diesel let it sit and drain it then fill it again with diesel and run it for 2-3 minutes. Clear all that crud out of it. And before any one jumps on me I am a mechanic for over 30 years and do this regularly on equipment in the Alaskan bush.

    It must be very satisfying to bring an old girl like that back to working condition, well done.
    That JB weld stuff is legend.
    With the regular high heat two-part stuff I once fixed a crack and a gouge on the clutch side cover of a buddy's sportbike after he dropped it in a corner on a mountain road, oil puking out of the gouge and crack. We were miles from the nearest town out in Western Japan. I laid the bike on its side, clutch side cover up, and used a file and a rock to scrape the paint off and rough the surface up, mixed up the two-part JB High heat stuff, quick-drying, and patched the side cover. He bet me dinner that it would not hold.
    Two or three years later when he sold the bike he had still not replaced the side cover, it never did leak. That JB weld is always in my roadside repair bag of tricks.
    Cheers from Tokyo!

    64 this year and this certainly brings back memories.. I’ve always been mechanically enclined. I loved working on old discarded engines, lawn mowers, and tractors. My opus was an old Johndeere B that apparently hadn’t run in years. As a 14 year old I worked on it every chance I got. Easter morning, dressed in a powder blue leisure suit for church, couldn’t stay away from the tractor... I spun the flywheel and the engine popped and another, I was so excited I forgot myself and what I was wearing. After another spins the engine started... as it started dirt and soot spat out of the exhaust pipe all over my suit.. I was dead meat.

Above all, the parts are usually glued together into a hopeless plastic package, which doesn't help that you know it's only a ten-cent part that needs to be replaced, but you are forced to buy the whole package plus get the computer to accept the replacement! Just to get the remote locking to work on the keys after changing the battery costs an idiotic lot!!!

    your on to it my man. the old girl has lots of life yet. change the engine oil and filter at 2hrs then into normal oil/filter change time regimes.Check your tappets now, then at +100hrs.. about the worst issue is burnt valves and you know how to avoid that, a good find well done As a young fella I used to swing spanners on these and others. Good to see what your doing.

      Regular exhaust valve clearance settings are a must, depending on
      usage /hrs done, in your case, perhaps once a year,
      Secondly lubricate the exhaust valves by putting SAE 10- engine oil in with your petrol say 10-15 ml per tankful of petrol (experiment till you get it right)
      If the old girl is a bit smokey, it wont do any harm but too much may foul the plugs, so drop the additive amount back. These old girls are built like a brick shithouse, and so with regular TLC she will see you long service..I enjoy watching what you are doing having done it myself, so I can both appreciate and understand why and what you doing -good stuff keep it up cheers Barry

      @barryansell5981 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@petefrench4198 Im not sure whether or not I`ve replied. 1st: always run an upper cylinder lubricant in the petrol 2nd.Most important: Check regularly, say to book value or 100hrs +or -, exhaust valve tappet clearances -if you have one, to book value, or it could be stamped on the rocker cover.Last but not least where possible make sure you have the correct heat range spark plugs and set at the correct gap-Plus or minus "030" (thou)
