    I actually really like the edit in "Do not resuscitate", its just so sudden and intense and it works with revealing Janice's desires to the audience. Also i just love weird, out-there, creative decisions. Most of the edits here are just kinda bad, but dont really affect my enjoyment at all

    David Chase, the creator of the show, said he personally edited every single episode of the Sopranos and never let anyone else edit anything. It bums me out that one of my favorite shows of all time has this many glaring mistakes, I like to think of them not as mistakes but as deliberate choices by Chase to incorporate a surrealist feel in some scenes, but that's probably wishful thinking. Great video!

    • @cygnustsp
      @cygnustsp ปีที่แล้ว +25

      You're right, that's definitely what Chase was doing. So much of the show is about disorienting the audience.

      Chase is a liar. He didn't. If u watch any interviews with him, especially the...maybe bad maybe ok imperioli shirripa podcast interview with chase, he admits over and over again that he doesn't remember this or that.

      People give Chase too much credit sometimes, they forget the awesome directors, writers and actors who gave it their all and they write it off as everything being Chase's deliberate choices. Yeah, he had the last word but it's more like he just recognized what worked. Not that he was personally responsible for every single thing the show did right.

    Nice vid. About the Luxury Lounge scene, the point of showing Tony in that weird sped-up shot after he drops the anchor, is that it's reminding him of dumping Big Pussy's body the same exact way. The footage is sped up to show that he feels uneasy and anxious.

    I really loved this video, what a joy, I knew you were coming to the slow-mo Carmella clip. It's such a cringe, unworthy of such a great show. You know what. The only thing I dislike about the Cold Cuts edit is the swipe afterwards. I don’t think the slowdown is for the shot composition or anything but for her facial expression. She’s breaking it off with this guy to go back to Tony and my read in her face was regret that she did that, and the slow down was that realization. The swipe is insane though.

      Her feeling regret or some other negative emotion actually makes sense when you remember that she wasn’t actually going back to Tony. At that point they hadn’t even discussed reconciling in fact later when she’s retelling the story to Rosalie and Ro asks her if she was going back to Tony…she says no and that she doesn’t know why she said it. So she definitely felt something negative which would explain the freeze frame on an apprehensive looking face!

    I completely understand the choppy slow down and swipe edit with Carmela. The effect is actually perfect. It displays the awkwardness and tension with him glooming at her from behind. Then the slow down and….swipe, goodbye. That chapter of her life over and on to the next chapter. It’s as almost as if we are flipping an actual page of a book. In the slow down we, the audience, are thinking oooh awwwwkward…and then…swipe! Or Flip the page! And we’re like pheeew ok that’s done, thank god. So, basically, the edit style is supposed to be conveying exactly how she is feeling right then….an awkward moment that is lasting way too long and she wants to quickly turn that page and be done with him

    There was only one bad edit I ever noticed in the series. Maybe more of poor directors choice for a segue than a bad edit though. It was from season 6 episode 9, in a flashback scene where Christopher recounts how Tony helped him with the problem of Adriana being a rat. It starts with Christopher saying, "like that day I came to the house" and the flashback begins. This segue always came off as forced and amateurish, almost like a comedy skit set up.

    I like the weird editing, because it makes the show feel like a direct product of its creator’s mind and hands. It makes the show feel that much more personal to David Chase, seeing effects and edit choices that a professional editor would not go with. Because they’re editing someone else’s work, and aren’t going to experiment or do anything more than the most straightforward conventional moves.
    An auteur director who’s actively learning the craft *would* think these choices are interesting or narratively fitting, though. Which gives them a sort of charming naivety.

    • @Luschan
      @Luschan 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Also, I’m convinced that David got hung up on editing the bit with Janice looking at the wall sign, and couldn’t get it to work so he got help from someone with editing experience.
      The jumpy flash effect and stylized shot of her eye is classic mid-late ‘90s editing, it was everywhere in commercials and tv so he was either emulating the trend, or a pro editor used it to salvage awkward footage and imagery that works better in your head and on the page than in reality.

    I think the full glass/empty glass is a case of "When you're a hammer, everything starts to look like a nail". It could be a continuity error - but we are also well aware that Tony (and most if not all of the others) are substance abusers. If your niche wasn't editing, but rather storytelling/directing/writing you could just as easily be sitting here telling us this once scene both reinforces our image of Tony as a substance abuser (in this case alcohol), but also as a very subtle note of his reaction to stress and his growing inability to separate 'work' and life - perhaps he was initially going to take a small sip, but the simple act of Meadow complaining [I think that's what she's doing here anyway] is enough for Tony to say "f it" and neck the glass.

    The series’ ending (the infamous cut to black) really put a lot of the weird edits in perspective for me. Every time I saw a strange or bad edit (like the Carmella scene from Cold Cuts) it took me out of the moment and reminded me that I was watching a TV show (it’s a TV progrum, a movie). The ending, which for many people watching it when it first aired made them think the cable went out, is the ultimate jarring edit of the entire series. Carmella’s scene in particular feels like the whole show was falling apart at the seams and then it swipes into another scene altogether. Clearly done on purpose despite how awkward the execution was. Then there’s all the dream sequences with all the elaborate editing, sound design and surreal imagery that could only be pulled off in a TV show or movie. Before things got too real or too immersive, there’s a weird moment to remind you that none of it is real (just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in.) David Chase really enjoyed messing with the show’s viewers

    For me the weird edits that stood out were when the show would cut to a shot, sometimes even a wide shot, and hold on it for half a second before cutting to something else. Very strange, why even have the shot, you can't even register whats happening before it cuts away. Strange.

    I actually think they reedited the scene where they add Nancy's head to the stand-in cause I feel like the first time I watched it it was incredibly creepy and later versions were a little better.
    I know they did that with quite a few things through the years so unless ya bought a DVD as they came out they're nearly impossible to find. Which makes some of the flaws seem strange lol
    Still the best TV show of all time though!

    I might be mistaken, but I don't believe they intentionally created that haze edit. I've noticed the same gradient in other movies from the 90s, so perhaps they were just trying to reduce the sun glare or something.

    Anchor scene needs to be kept intact because it reminds Tony of Pussy right after a conflict with Arty. It reminds the audience too. Cutting that so it's not so "jarring" is destroying essential meaning in the scene.
    Chase comes from a school where film has a psychological language. Technical today pedantry is what has replaced psychological and emotional truth for today's directors. Directors don't know how to tell stories with images nowadays because they think the only meaning is in the spoken script.
    The odd wipes are references to soap operas. They are added visual jokes. The Sopranos is in part thematically a commentary on sitcoms and soap operas...

    - I like the Boca freeze.
    - Boca audio is just an obvious dub, they do it a couple times in the Sopranos, I've actually never noticed it
    - I like the do not resuscitate one, it fits with The Soprano's goofy/comedy vibe that it occasionally has
    - Big girls don't cry hazy sky isn't really super noticeable, I think it fits the dirty industrial vibe of Jersey
    - Proshai Livushka CGI wasn't bad for the time, I recall my parents being impressed
    - Luxury lounge isn't super noticable and doesn't take anything away when you do notice it
    - Home movies directional blur fits
    - Fake smoke didn't really stand out to me
    I would say the Cold Cuts one is the " worst " and definitely most jarring. I've had friends and girlfriends who normally don't pick up on anything get completely taken aback by that transition, even my Mother whose in her late 60s had a " wtf " when she saw it as we were watching the show last year.

    For me the worst shots were when Vito shot Jackie jr, the close up of the gun going off there is no slide movement or recoil and obviously a toy.
    Also when Benny shot the gang members that were hired to whack someone else. Then the guns are going off, it’s so obviously oil smoke and just looks like a high school video project.

  • @randomuploaderguy

    The Boca one, I would have keyed up a gradual increasing slow-mo at the apex of the dip that would fade transition into the next scene and keep the overall timing of the transition the same. Less jarring I think.

      What do you mean by looped lines? Examples?

    • @opaljk4835
      @opaljk4835 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@couchbumkino5423 just ADR’d lines that are not part of the original dialogue. There’s the “he was my best Buddy in the can” that Angelo says to Tony about Tony B (I believe during the scene where Carmine Sr has a stroke) and another crazy one where Charmaine is talking to Arty about the girl who got SA’d by the soccer coach. She says something like “the fathers in Europe, nobody can reach him” and the tone and timbre are just wildly different from the last line. Not to mention it doesn’t sync up with her lips. It may be called something else, but there definitely are weirdly overdubbed lines everywhere in the series.

      @@opaljk4835I think that’s just called a dub. Sometimes parts of the original audio are poor quality so they have them re-record them in a sound room because they can’t redo the scene weeks or months after wrapping

      @opaljk4835 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@peteyprimo7173 no, these are lines added that the actors didn’t originally say on set, for whatever reason. “Looped lines” is old terminology for something they call ADR now. It can mean more than one thing. There’s a lot of choppy stuff in the sopranos that you can hear multiple fidelities in one scene, from line to line. I usually watch it once or twice a year, so the next time I’ll make notes of all these weirdo lines.
