I'm starting to think that David Chase is some kind of self-hating Italian. He changed his surname, portrayed Italians as Gavones, especially in The Many Saints of Newark. And I saw that 2 part interview with David Chase that HBO released a few weeks ago. In it Chase even talks about incest going on in Italian families. His words were something to the extant of "These men from Southern Italy could really have their demons" or something like that.
I dunno, not self hating. He’s been able to portray a range of Italians, it’s just that he’s clearly insecure about his place in the industry. He’s always been going on about how he never thought he’d be a TV writer. Because of that, I think he’s trying too hard to be profound when his greatest strength was always the nuance of his characters. He outta clear his head, realize he doesn’t need to be shocking
@kitb9504 You seem obsessed with the word "woke" or "woke agenda" to the point it seems your mind is completely clouded by this apparant boogeyman. How is David Chase "woke"? People use this term when it doesnt fit at all like some kind of buzzword.
Thankfully it didn't happen. Imagine destroying one of the best characters, in arguably the greatest TV show of all time for a plot in a trash movie? Crazy to think smh.
It would be perfect. Shows how hypocritical it is for this to cross the line for fans, but the other characters aren't ruined for even more heineous crimes like killing pregnant women.
@OWlsfordshire Then you don't know the show. Ralph was painted as a horrible human being from jump, so thats a TERRIBLE comparison. They were all bad guys but they were older mobsters that had honor and codes, which was a big theme in the series. Was it not? Richie, Feech, Uncle Junior? Totally changing Junior's character where there was no weirdness between him a Janice, nor did Janice use this information to her benefit, which she was one of the most manipulative people on the show would make ZERO SENSE. But it would be perfect, right? Never a single hint of that for years in the series.. Then you completely twist it in a bad prequel? Stop.
@@OWlsfordshire Uh.... Did you miss the part about you really don't know the show? Just be quiet. Watch the video again and see how terrible of an idea it would be. Trust me.. This channel creator and I forgot more about this show the you'll ever know.
One of the things I dont like about the movie is how much worse it made alot of the show characters. Yes they were bad guys but most of them had some kind of redeemable qualities and were relatable. Johnny Boy in the show was shown as charismatic and Junior was still pretty intelligent and had wisdom despite his insecurities. In the movie, Johnny Boy is just a grumpy asshole and Junior is already senile in his 30's. The writers probably don't like that there's fans who supposedly idolize these characters but at the same time being likeable and charming is literally part of what they do.
The way I read it is that the flashbacks we see of characters in The Sopranos are just flashbacks, they're people's memories which are bound to be biased whereas MSON shows all these characters for what they really are
@@tony_dogsyeah but now you’re doing the writers job for ‘em. I didn’t think that until after I left the theater, when I had to rationalize what I just watched.
Go back and watch the show, something that no one ever seems to comment on(except me apparently) is that the show loved to show an innocent person killed by a character before the character is killed. Christopher his writer friend, Vito the guy whose car he hit, Bobby the guy in a custody fight, Ralph killed Tracee(and the horse) Jackie Junior killed Sunshine, Bobby Senior Carlos(the guy with Mustang Sally) as far as the show shows was only guilty of being Mustang Sally's friend. Probably missing some.
I just saw that scene recently, and it was a perfect deflection away from Richie trying to get support to assassinate Tony. And Junior's delivery was real like he was mad about the 10$ still, so we really don't need this filth to corrupt the original series, which is far from clean with Johnnycakes, the half-jew half-black taking Tony's daughter's body and self-worth, and tony saying it's ok to be gay in prison.
@@Pezint I think you are all just pissed because it wouldn't fit with your view on how these things happen because that is informed solely by movies and tv. Realistically its pretty accurate. This idea of "Noble Mafia" is moronic, and entirely fictional.

Deleted scenes are deleted for a reason. And in this case it was deleted because it would have changed everything and nothing needed to be changed. Thankfully they recognized that and avoid ruining Junior's and the Soprano's Legacy for everyone
The story says she completely repressed it to the point that it took hallucinogenic drugs for her to unintentionally remember. If the story had remained, then it's likely she would've repressed them again, after her talk with Dickie, as it could be explained that she was still under the influence of the drugs when she told him. Also, childhood abuse is not as easy to overcome, as you make it seem. I'm no psychiatrist, but that much is easy to understand. There's a difference between experiencing abuse as a helpless child who can't begin to fathom why something like that is happening vs. experiencing abuse as an adult who can understand things like that.
@TheHarbingerofAutism Who said anything about overcoming the trauma? It's her psychological makeup that made Janice pull out a weapon. I'm saying within the framework that Janice, as a character, is depicted in the show, it is hard to believe she would let Junior live happily in front of her face. If not, with her own hands, she would have gotten someone to do it. It would be hard for me to reconcile that idea with Janice from the show. Also, repression is not, as matter of fact, an idea in psychology like it is in TV shows and movies. To add double repression (full repression again after recovering the memory) is a dubious prospect.
Chase wanted to redeem the Janice character by inserting psychological trauma into her childhood, he chose Junior because he was unmarried without kids and wasn't shown to be a ladies man and had those glasses. Could you imagine what this would do to those glasses? He definitely made that movie under the direction to kill the sanctity and masculinity of the franchise. I know it's a crime show but it's counter-culture in it's portrayal of race, sex, and women etc. all the manipulations of our current day.
@@kitb9504 It's about destroying the integrity and legacy of the show and by extension any message people can glean from it today. The Adriana actress just did an interview last month saying how a recently documentary made James gandofini out to be a really bad guy for no reason. Sopranos was already woke with johnncakes, the "black jew" at college having sex and treating tony's daughter like an afterthought. And Tony saying it's ok to be gay in prison.
@@villiannewyork The undertone of Junior ordering the hit on Chris father's and Paulie or that cop Chris killed not being the one who did it also changes the tone of the series. And chase said, "I should have watched the series again before writing the movie". You can't add something into the canon that doesn't even remember or account for what came before. I mean you can do it but the integrity of the show is severely damaged from the chaotic tone shifts, retcons, and implications.
Jr being a pedophile would be ridiculous. Now, if they had the missing brother, Heracles Soprano, the one with mental health issues in the film saying him being caught with a kid, that would be something.
And these reactions are why people are so traumatized by sex crimes. It breaks people's brains and they victim shame. I dated a woman who's cousin was raped , in the 90s!!! And her family had to leave Naples for rome because this 13 year old "brought her family shamed" by being raped. In the 1990s! You don't own these scumbag characters, you'll have to write your own story where they are all grandfatherly wise killers like don Corleone. Who were good people! I mean, you gotta kill a few horses and prostitutes to make an omelet. But otherwise good people.
If I were Italian I would find this joke of a film HIGHLY offensive! Now Chase was going to make JR a Peado on top of Jr ordered Dickie killed which was never hinted in the Series!
the worst part is how good the scene actually is. The dialogue really fits the characters, the tone is just right. But good lord, they should tell this kind of story with new original characters. I feel like they’re shoving it in there just because they *had* to make a sopranos movie
Cutting this was a good decision not just because it feels like out-of-nowhere shock value, but also because what happened in the finished cut not only feels so much like what Junior would do, but it was the ONE part of the movie that felt true to the spirit of The Sopranos. Junior has Dickie whacked for nothing more than a slight against his ego. And this coming from a series where 90% of the tragedy and conflict that happens is a result of gossip, hearsay, bruised egos, or the ever-treacherous "breakin' balls".
It would have completely destroyed the Uncle Junior character and peppered future viewings and rewatches of The Sopranos with the disturbing negativity
Dude, I normally love your videos. However, you're cracking me up on this one. You're actually mad, disgusted about a part of the movie that you're glad they didn't add. This should be a video about how great of a choice that was. Also, as movies are being written, all kinds of odd ideas are explored.
Hold up. Janice is 8 years old in this scenario? This is at the end of the movie? Janice is older than Tony and Tony is a teenager in the latter half of the movie. And she really did acid at 8 years old? Makes no sense to me even as an early draft.
🤦🤦🤦that happened in the past.... is that so hard to understand? The acid unlocked here suppressed memory and triggered here PTSD. Janice tells Montisanto what happened WHEN she was 8 years old.
Yes, thank you everyone. I misunderstood. I thought he touched her both some time ago and then again when she was doing the acid. Next time I won't play minesweeper as I watch the video.
I think Chase wanted to redeem Livia and Janice in the film. And that's fine as an idea, they were presented too much like one-dimensional villains on the show. And both of their behavior could actually be the result of trauma. But if THAT was route he wanted to take, he should've introduced a whole new character as the molester. Maybe Livia's father and Janice's grandfather (it would explain Janice's and Livia's complex relationship as well to have them be bonded by this shared trauma). But NOT completely destroy an already established and generally well-liked character. That's the worst idea I've ever heard. Plus, none of Janice's and Junior's interactions on the show would make any sense if this were true.
I think there is a knee jerk reaction among some people to make any evil done by women to be the result of athe woman being victimized by a man. Are there any female villains in pop culture who are just evil?
The prequel Junior looked more like a classic "one of those" than the one in the show. Any, this is a horrible plot. David Chase is getting the "George Lucas" side eye from me, now.
More proof that The Sopranos directors never watched the show before writing The Many Saints of Newark. It wouldn't have made sense both plot and character arc wise. Timeline got fucked up.
David Chase, the creator of The Sopranos never watched The Sopranos before writing The Many Saints of Newark? Note: writers write, directors director, sometimes it is the same person. Chase directed two episodes and wrote 24. Konner, the cowriter of The Many Saints wrote two episodes and directed none.
It does not feel like Janice’s character at all to bring her step children around the man that abused her as a child. She attacks a woman at a children’s soccer game because the woman’s child was too rough with Sofia. And we’re supposed to believe she would then bring that same child around Junior for Sunday dinner? The same woman that gunned down Richie and pushed Ralph down a flight of stairs is too scared to cut junior out of her and her Children’s lives?
This screams "updated for modern audiences" and likely a younger generation writer's idea that thankfully was scrapped last minute. Probably part of the reason for all the reshoots too.
Chase is JUDAS! He trashed his own, considerable legacy, on the alter of woke, leftist-liberal propaganda - I've come to despise him, and his ilk!!!!!!!!
What a nonsensical garbage plot line. Thank God they didn’t put that in the movie. It would’ve turned that movie from a misfire into legitimately one of the worst ever made.
The movie was an abomination. A trash piece of shit waste of time. They butchered the characters & background stories. Made a bullshit DEI plot which made no fuckin sense. Woke Joked the whole story. Going from having the mob get smashed by low level black st hoods. Which would never have happened in the 70s. They wouldn't have dared. Especially during the height of the mobs power. Then a Black riot that had absolutely nothing to do with the mob. No I'll will towards the cast though. Alessandro Nivolo was fantastic as Dickie. Thank God they didn't do that to Juniors character. The whole movie was a shit show. Chase needs to redeem himself. He lost his touch by GAF about what people think. Instead he should have gone his old way by not GAF. Never compromising his characters & stories. For cheap studio propaganda agenda's.
Chase should've made "Cleaver" instead of the awful prequal.

Yeah but you gotta get over it
He's become a woke grifter. It's like he's trying too hard to be "unique" that just ends up pretentious and degenerate at the same time.

Stop.
@@machomusprime50 Uh, did you miss the part where Jr already tried to kill his own family?

Might be a fake script. Chase did this for the original Sopranos show. I think it was mentioned in the "The Wise Guys" doc.
Yeah, but I dont know if this is the fake script Id want getting leaked out...
You mean the episode where the US Navy contacts Tony and has him serve aboard a nuclear sub where he eventually takes part in a mutiny?
@@dougfraser77No spoilers!
Ohhh, that's the boss of this family you're talkin' about!
Johnny being that way makes sense

That has nothing to do with this filthy but CANCELLED script!!!
Damn, Livio, still have a CD from way back. 🫡

@kitb9504 yeah he especially has a wild hair across his ass in those interviews
Seems disrespectful to me. Like he didn't try to have fun with fans about mysteries like the Russian interior decorator; he insulted people who kept asking and gave a really sarcastic answer lol. I get it, after years it's probably annoying but people just really like his show.
David Chase: "I want to make a movie about the Jersey race riots"
Studio: "Hmm - how about you make a Sopranos movie instead?"
Chase: "Eh, no, I want to make a movie about the race riots"
Studio: "How about this - you should make a movie about both? You can make your race riot movie, but we can call it a 'Sopranos movie'? Just rename the characters!"
Chase: "Brilliant idea!"
Deleted scenes are deleted for a reason. And in this case it was deleted because it would have changed everything and nothing needed to be changed. Thankfully they recognized that and avoid ruining Junior's and the Soprano's Legacy for everyone
Out of respect for the show and the opinions of real fans like Cineranter, I have never watched the Many Saints and don't plan to.
David Chase remarked the ones that he should have watched the movie before writing the show making it non-canon

Janice took acid once. She looked over at her Uncle June and laser beams were shooting out of his eyes,
Then she ate mushrooms. Stuffed mushrooms. A whole platter.
Junior by name, Junior by predilection.
Quasimodo could’ve never predicted this.
Many saints catches not pitches. David chase too...definitely a fanuke. My estimation of him as a man started and stayed on the bottom, like Chase 😂
His recent Sopranos documentary's take on Gandolfini was also shameless.
@kitb9504 I didn't see it but I believe you and I won't be watching it lol
I would have found it hard to believe Janice would blast someone for hitting her, but she would let Uncle Junior make it that long into old age.
Janice tried to kill him when she was young. She didn’t put the gas out in his kitchen. Junior caught her putting the flame out
@TheHarbingerofAutism Who said anything about overcoming the trauma? It's her psychological makeup that made Janice pull out a weapon. I'm saying within the framework that Janice, as a character, is depicted in the show, it is hard to believe she would let Junior live happily in front of her face. If not, with her own hands, she would have gotten someone to do it. It would be hard for me to reconcile that idea with Janice from the show. Also, repression is not, as matter of fact, an idea in psychology like it is in TV shows and movies. To add double repression (full repression again after recovering the memory) is a dubious prospect.
This would've completely ruined a great character. It shouldn't have even been considered.
Credit to Cineranter for a fascinating episode. Thank F it didn't happen.
Thank god they realized how ridiculous this idea was and cut it. Thank God they didn’t ruin the character
“Little boys and eggs? Why didn’t I order that”
Cut line from uncle june
This feels like it came out of a different movie, and not something made *for* the Sopranos universe.
He's been to priests about it. He could probably get a letter from his church.
In other words, he went woke and backfired. Worse, it's gone degenerate.
If you wanna add that element to it whatever I guess, not that I think it adds much. But to have it be Uncle Jun is just insane and disgusting.
In the 1990s!

this was probably HBO's idea
These writers--they even suggested Junior and kids... TFOOO! That motherless...
Such motherless motherf*ckery, and slander, if you ask me...
Was probably a fake script like they did with Season 6
That would out of character for Junior.
I can’t even watch the movie and don’t even consider it apart of the Sopranos.. however… the fact that Uncle Joey Diaz is init, does crack me up lol
"Ever hear the joke about the Italian-American screenwriter? He gave them a script they couldn't understand."
It would have completely destroyed the Uncle Junior character and peppered future viewings and rewatches of The Sopranos with the disturbing negativity
This would be a fine plot if this was a standalone mob movie, but its disgusting to retroactively destroy Uncle jun's character.
6 seasons on hbo and then this pygmy thing in theaters
It’s so horrible it’s not canon in my mind
Damn it. I was trying to figure out how to phrase that joke, and you nailed it.
The acid unlocked suppressed memories
It would've taken place later in the timeline I'm sure
🤦🤦🤦that happened in the past.... is that so hard to understand? The acid unlocked here suppressed memory and triggered here PTSD. Janice tells Montisanto what happened WHEN she was 8 years old.
No. Janice would’ve been a teen, but she recalled the abuse from when she was 8.
Yes, thank you everyone. I misunderstood. I thought he touched her both some time ago and then again when she was doing the acid. Next time I won't play minesweeper as I watch the video.
Many scenes in Newark felt unnecessary
@@tonytoes0 That's a fair point.
The prequel Junior looked more like a classic "one of those" than the one in the show.
Any, this is a horrible plot. David Chase is getting the "George Lucas" side eye from me, now.
Junior didn't have the making of a windowless van owner😂
Like Chris Rock said, there’s drunk uncle a drug uncle and **** uncle….
Theres nothing in the show to suggest Junior is a weirdo?? Ok buddy.
Sounds more like Hollywood trying to make a confession.
Yep, you've nailed it!!!!!!!!
Janice was always a scammer , im hoping this was her lying for attention... like someone on steve wilcos
I like it, it gives Junior an arc like Noah.
Noah ? 🤦♂️
@@sean5558 Noah. He had an arc. The dinosaurs didn't fit on it so now they're extinct.
I feel like I have been stabbed in the heart.
This screams "updated for modern audiences" and likely a younger generation writer's idea that thankfully was scrapped last minute. Probably part of the reason for all the reshoots too.
