  • A quick look at what is required to install the Shifter Buddy, and a shift shaft seal on a 1999 Honda Valkyrie Interstate.
If you are interested in purchasing a shifter buddy, go to Facebook, search for the shifter buddy group, request purchase info, and they will message you with the cost and how to pay for it. you will need a PayPal, or Venmo account.
I cannot say anything but good about my interaction with them. I ordered my shifter buddy on a Sunday, had a tracking number first thing Monday morning, and received it in the mail Wednesday. The Install is super easy, no special tools are required, just a 10mm, a 12mm wrench or socket, and a 3mm allen wrench. If you replace the shift shaft seal it is a little more in depth, but not very difficult.
This is by far the biggest bang for the buck modification I have made for my Valkyrie yet.
    Thank you for watching.

Just received my Shifter Buddy and hit this vid as a sanity check before I went and did the actual installation. Nice job of showing why this is needed, how easy it is to install, and how it improves the shifting action. Can't believe I waited 145K miles to get one of these...

Wow, what a big difference in 1st to 2nd and vice versa. I added the shifter buddy after first bleeding my Valk's clutch and adding new fluid. Thanks for the upload. Appreciated.

Enjoyed the video, my 97 Bumblebee sits a lot in the garage since I started riding a GW 6 years ago. Started noticing a oil leak and it looks like the shift seal. Going to check out the shift buddy. Thanks

I turned 4mm off the spacer , the oil seal removal looked too easy!!
I hope mine is! I'll do it when the weather improves

I just watched this to see how it takes out the slop, I have 98 GL1500A with floorboards and heel toe - so my jobs going to be more of a Biotch I think. LOL still cool to see how it all goes in.

I can't believe you didn't wipe the area with a rag or something before you installed the new seal.

Nice! I went with the Jersey shifter which has a couple more parts to it than the Shifter Buddy and also requires drilling a hole in the existing shift lever. Same concept though and holds the shifter on-axis very well!

I considered the Jersey, but liked the no drill aspect of the shifter buddy better. Nothing at all against the Jersey, just personal preference.

@@davidschwartztrauber3540 I don’t know, but I bet it would work. Ask the guys in the shifter buddy Facebook group, I bet they would know for sure if it would work or not. I would think it would though.

with the lock set screw now your shaft is moving up and down and not pivoting like it should which is going to oblong your seal be better off with out the set screw

    • @JosephVollmar
      @JosephVollmar  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

On these bikes the shaft that comes out between the exhaust does not go directly in to the trans. It connects to another arm that goes to the shaft coming out of the transmission. By locking the set screw you force the shaft arm that goes to the shifter peg to move in the same radius as the inner arm going to the transmission shift shaft thus taking out the deflection caused by the length of the total shifter linkage.
It’s hard to describe unless you see it but there is about a 2” arm that attaches to the shift shaft, then the 3 1/2” rod that runs through the exhaust, then a 3” arm connected to the shifter peg. It looks like a z with the center straightened out. Puts a lot of leverage on the shift shaft.

So, you mentioned that shifting and finding neutral should be easier. Could you please share your experiences after that installation?

Look for my first ride video after major repairs, it should be one of the next videos up the list and you can hear my reaction live on camera.

Would you change the seal on a ‘98 standard with 9,500 miles when installing the Shifter Buddy?

Not right off the top of my head. Make sure you are using a good M/C oil in the engine, but right off the top of my head I’m not sure. With the bike shut off I would take a good look at the amount of slop you have in the shift linkage though.
