    instead of taking and cutting off the pipes, you could leave them in their place and just cap/plug the other end. I think them pipes look cool! and it saves you time. All you need is set of assorted rubber caps the can be bought in most auto parts stores for under $10.

    This video is great, not just for a desmog, but as a general reference for that area with all the vacuum hoses, fuel lines, etc...
    I wish I'd discovered it back in 2016. I know that area well now, but had to learn the hard way.
    BTW I posted this on the Valkyrie Riders cruiser club site.

    Well done video. It always helps to see how a particular project is approached rather than blindly wandering into the engine with lots of energy and little info. I'll be installing that kit soon on my Valk. Thanks again.

    Thanks for posting this. You just saved me a lot of time. I have a 98 that has been on the lift waiting for me to put the tank back on, but I think I will eliminate a bunch of potential vac leaks before I do that. The info is much appreciated. Thanks again.

    Desmog my 1999 Valkyrie from Red Eye and also purchase the heat shield. Thanks for your video, it helped a lot. Did the heat shield after the desmog, which made it easier, didn't have to disconnect the air inlets, was able to work it in from the front, worst part was removing the radiator and thermostat.

    Phillips screws need JIS screw drivers to fit the phillips heads correctly. American phillips will work but will damage the heads to some degree. JIS= Japanese Industrial Standard. These screw drivers are cut different than American and will fit the heads properly.

    Great job! If I had one critique it would be to buy yourself a can of Silicone spray and use it on items like "O" rings and the airbox intake tubes. It will make reassembly much easier and will prevent chaffing of the "O" rings.

    Thanks for the instructive video Samuel. As some of the commenters suggested, I just pluged the air hoses, capped all but two carb vacuum lines and ran those lines with a "T" up to the fuel petcock vacuum connector. The only connector on the airbox I left connected and unplugged was the crankcase breather. The bike runs and idles OK but it only goes about 65mph. There is no throttle response after that. Any thoughts? Did I miss something?

    • @samuelclark8055
      @samuelclark8055  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I'd say 4-8 hours depending on tools and know how. It took me the better part of a few days but of course that included the video and interruptions, and also I have little to no mechanical background.

    Great video. :) Tell me please...why would one DeSmog the Valkyrie. Is there a performance advantage? Just wondering why it's done. Thank you. I will be doing the removal as part of a carb clean up/rebuild. I also wonder why one would not just cap the 2ndary hose coming out of the airbox and the hose coming from it and just leave all of the pretty chrome crap in place? lol

    Getting ready to do this on my GL1500 goldwing. Same engine, but only 2 carbs. Will anything else be different? I saw the kits works for Valks AND GoldWings.
    My issue is my Pair valve system has failed and or broke, causing a wicked em balance on the intakes, and a resulting knocking / detonation noise above 2200 rpm's , plus a bad lean condition

    I'm surprised you don't have an impact driver to remove screws. A must for anyone working on motorcycles.

    • @samuelclark8055
      @samuelclark8055  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have one now, and you are right, using the impact driver for screws and sometimes bolts is the right way to go, much better than stripping them with the drill.

    vacuum line to the gas petcock opens the gas line to the carbs once the engine rotates or starts. acts as a safety in case you forget to manually close your petcock, It prevents flooding to the carbs when engine is off.

    another question........once you removes the pair valve in the center.......why not just plug the 2 lines it attached to on the check valve assembly ?
    seems that way you could just leave everything attached

    What are the advantages to doing this? Any idling issues?

    • @kylestewart8049
      @kylestewart8049 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The Meister from all i’ve read there is no performance benefit from desmog the valkyrie other than reducing risk of vacuum leaks as these bikes get older. vacuum leaks can hurt your bikes carburetion tune and hurt fuel mileage etc.. OR unless you install a aftermarket exhaust like a cobra 6n6. then it is necessary to stop the deceleration back fires.

    • @boreed5734
      @boreed5734 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@kylestewart8049 I had an issue with my '99 Valk, it was making a chirping sound I couldn't figure out plus the exaust note would flutter at idle. Upon closer inspection I could see the vacumn line on the left side on the middle carburetor was collapsing going in and out with the engine time so it was evident that line from the pair valve was cooked and gone completely soft. I replaced 3 lines, 1 to both sides plus the one coming from the valve itself. Upon completion started it up and it was the vacumn leak that was fluttering the exaust. Bike sounds better and runs perfect and seems happier. Inspected all lines, checked K&N air filter and in-line fuel filter which was installed to keep carburetors cleaner. Vacuum lines was 3.00, labor was O since I did it myself. As for desmog don't think I'm going that route..

    what is the benefit of doing this de-smog?

    • @53patsfan
      @53patsfan 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I did a search and found there is no benefit to doing this. BUT as the bike ages a lot of those hoses crack and dry rot, or break off and cause vacuum leaks. The smog setup was put on to satisfy California's smog rules, and whatever other states followed. As I said there is no benefit, but it is preventive maintenance. Some people say their bike runs better, but it should't, so they may already have had hose issues. The smog stuff on the bike is a waste anyway,

    • @steeveedee8478
      @steeveedee8478 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Removing de-smog prevents the bike being forced to re-use dirty air and can result in very slight improved running. The main reason to do it is that tiny cracks and leaks in the hoses can totally screw up your carburetors. With the de-smog performed you no longer have those problems! When doing this also refurbish the petcock with a rubber service kit as the rubber perishes causing fuel leaks into carbs/ cylinders and catastrophic hydrolock when starting.

    • @samuelclark8055

      Allows the bike to run a little cleaner and with less popping. It's a California requirement that decreases certain types of pollutants at the cost of running smoother.

    That would work the same, correct?? That is......to simply seal off the pipes??
