Playtron is such a confusing project. Some of the devs that were brought on to work on it seem like nice people, but it's funded and owned by incredibly shady corporations and crypto bros who were lying in their initial marketing. Like, it would be cool if this was a real competitor to other distributions, but I just don't think I can comfortably trust any of this. Not with the corpo/crypto angel that they're coming from.
True, since it's open source someone could fork it if it goes under or someone can fork it and remove the crap that they have in it, unless the licence is stupid or something and they're not allowed to do that
Next time you should test with a controller that has a guide/home button. Steam uses that as the button to open it's menus/QAM so it'd be good to test if playtron handles that case similarly. It sucks that their UI doesn't seem as well integrated in directly controlling gamescope like Steam does.
Yeah I agree, if they can make it more feature complete and fix more bugs and bring more devices supported+ desktop mode it will be a competitor for sure, I do think the crypto is an odd decision but haven't seen anything actually sketchy go down yet like if they sell their assets and get rich quick skeem or a ponzie skeem, so will see how it goes
i would say its because playtron is trying to be something thats not steamos, bazzite is great but you also need a competitor that gives users choice, when this ui gets better it will be compelling for some users, playtron is on fedora also so when it comes to updates its similar to bazzite, just do you want a steamos interface or a playtron interface? the decision is yours, and with the user being able to connect multiple accounts right into the interface directly makes it easy to start gaming right away
basically, expect their not forking steamos big picture and instead making their own ui ontop of immutable fedora pretty sure and no desktop mode just yet
It looks promising it has potential, but we can clearly see it's alpha software, a lot of bugs, missing features, a weird barebones installer, but I think if they put effort in it, it can become a good gaming os but they have to change those sounds in the main interface they are so not fitting for a gaming os and annoying
I thought at first Playtron would be really good. But not only does it sound like PlayStation as a name, crypto is thrown into the mix and you can't even use Steam cloud saves. This is starting to look like a shady crypto riddled get rich quick scheme. I'm going to stay well clear of this, I won't be buying or using one of their devices even if they are giving them away for free.
Well steam cloud saves seemed to be working in some games, I think that issue I was having was just a bug But I can understand why you would want to stay clear of it
In the Steam launch options for the game, you can input --launcher-skip to, well, skip the launcher and open the gane immediately. Idk how many games that launch option works on, but it works with Cyberpunk, and I believe Baulder's Gate 3. Why do so many companies need so many launchers that no one will ever use -_-
@oliverdowning1543 I have both CP2077 and Witcher3 and both start with the "redprelauncher" by default in GOG Galaxy or Launch Game shortcut. If I run the game exe, it runs directly.
What is this garbage ? Both the hardware and the software screams techbro scam. Playtron just steals the hard work from valve (proton) and puts it in a different linux distro.
If those distros are gaming distorts and use proton then yes. I thought they might have implemented their own translation layer but nah, they’re tech bros
@gigelfranaru ah yes, they're gonna create a whole new translation layer from scratch, that would take a decade to get running on the same level as proton, proton is allowed to be used just about by anyone so I don't see why you are mad about these people wanting to use it for their own project, they are creating their own UI for everything and supporting devices which costs money, other Distros like bazzite or nobara etc fork steamos UI which is not creating your own UI from scratch and this playtron UI is fully open source so again I don't see why you are mad that their using proton when others are forking much more then what playtron is doing lol And they have many developers from different open source projects helping like from lutris or heroic
Look. If you're interested in *gaming* do you really want the performance hit of OS-level pre-installed Crypto stuff running on it? If you want Crypto performance, build a Crypto rig. If you want a gaming rig, get Bazzite. If you want a machine learning box, you're probably gonna be renting a cloud. And if you are looking for a "Web3" box... Good luck. Don't become a "I lost my life savings!!!!" victim.
@@linuxnext Might be just me and my perspective but it seems as soon as Nobara gained some attention everyone is making a gaming OS now. Probably just me. I feel like every "gaming" distro is just doing it cause GE showed it could be done and was marketable.
@@SecretlySeven i see yeah, i think for playtron tho there actually trying to get into the market that steam os is in right now, playtron os is unique as its using its own ui for the game mode so i dont think it's a nobara copy, other distros like cachy os, pika os, chimeraos, i would say are more like nobara
By the way playtron os is fully open source so you can have a look at what there doing on their github :)

This is a really good deep dive! We find out who the fourth Playtron founder is: Jacko Jackson. 🤣
Ah yes a Australian football ambassador 😭
Perfect choice for Linux gaming lol

Mine has a home button, it didn't have any UI for that when I clicked it :P
@@linuxnext Ah, couldn't tell. That sucks. Between that, and the gamescope integration, they have a ways to go. At least it's just an Alpha

Healthy concern over Steam having as much sway as it does for gaming on Linux is good but wowww. A little concerning.
If you're going to have an operating system be bloated you may as well be compensated for it .
Wdym?
Are they contributing to Proton? Why is Playtron better than Bazzite that already exists?

I did not know steam users had to deal with using a launcher for the Witcher 3. That kinda sucks for you. (GOG for the win tho)
