    One of the Bazzite maintainers here, really enjoyed the video (both as subscriber and maintainer) and i am happy that you enjoy Bazzite.
    About the issues with the kun (and other ayaneo devices)
    There are licensing issues with the speaker firmware, we cant include it with the OS itself so it has to be installed upon by the user (this is bad we know, but this was the only alternative we had).
    so sadly with ayaneo devices you will have to open the terminal and run "ujust install-speaker-firmware" which will download and install the speaker firmware for you so that it will work on next boot.
    For the rest of the buttons to work, we have to literally reverse engineer the button inputs and implement them in HHD (handheld daemon), we cannot do that without help from someone who has physical access to said device (or the manufacturer ships one to our devs).
    PS: "ujust" is a script runner that we use so that there is 1 command for all our custom scripts, you can use "ujust --choose" to see them and the source or to select/search for which one to run. or just run "ujust" to see all the commands in a normal help style and what arguments they support for skipping command line dialog boxes.

      How suitable is Bazzite as a PC desktop replacement for Windows? I do more than just game on my PC, and would like to abandon Windows before I'm forced on 11. Also, no Nvidia support? Is this a licensing issue like the above problem?

      @@bakakafka4428it's nearly perfect. The proprietary Nvidia drivers are pre-installed and pre-configured if you choose the Nvidia Bazzite image. I've put it on several Nvidia desktops, both in my house and in the homes of friends
      The one caveat is that handheld style "game mode" does not work with Nvidia cards because of their proprietary and closed source nature, however you get a very similar experience on desktop by just putting steam in big picture mode.

    • @HikariKnight
      @HikariKnight 3 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา +3

      @@bakakafka4428 there is nvidia support, however you get desktop only. you dont get the deck/htpc interface and integration due to nvidia driver issues (which nvidia has to fix).
      To answer your question, it depends on what you do. the best way to find out is to just try it on a spare disk somewhere or a spare laptop and see what you can do and what requires alternatives. If we disregard specific software needs.
      Bazzite is perfectly fine as a desktop OS like any other OS, but we cannot conjure up support for software that do not work on linux or that the developers of said software do not make work on linux (like photoshop).
      But if you rely on software that is packaged for lets say fedora, arch, ubuntu/debian, etc. You can run it on bazzite using distrobox which then just runs the software inside a container that integrates seamlessly with your system.

    The biggest problem across Linux is that there's too many people working on different but similar things
    Like you said, all the SteamOS-like spin offs should recognize the gains that Bazzite has made and just consolidate their efforts working on that
    There's so much effort and talent going to different things that you wonder what could happen if they just all came together

    • @HNedel
      @HNedel 11 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      I‘ve been using linux as a dual boot since at least the early 2000s. Have been sticking mostly to ubuntu and in recent years arch or manjaro. Not saying i am an expert, but could usually make things work. When I got an ROG Ally, Windows 11 was quite the nuisance and was replaced completely with a clean bazzite install. I had heard about Fedora and Red Hat linux, but wasn’t aware of the move to flatpacks in recent years which seems to be rolling out to all distros. To my surprise, installing software often came with its own 500mb „platform“ based on a specific version or build in order to avoid Dependancy hell. And that seems very wasteful. I read some quite heated discussions on forums with people defending and criticizing this approach. But it seems the rationale for this was the huge effort required by developers to package their software for all different distributions. Which begs the question, why didn’t they choose rpm or deb? AUR seems to have everything, as it is basically compiled from source… guess this is just something inherent with sepsrate open source projects without a centralized decision making process.

      If everybody works on the same thing, the other thing that's 10x better will never get developed. In other words: neither approach is perfect

    • @clutchboi4038
      @clutchboi4038 10 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา +8

      It's a necessity imo. These people inherently can't even work together because of conflicting personalities. Two people will be working on the same thing but have fundamentally different approaches and philosophies behind why they are coding it differently. They would never be able to put those differences aside to work together because it would consist of one side saying yea my code and approach is shit so I'm going to scrap it to work on your project. Just won't happen. We need everyone taking their own approach to the same solution to have a battle of ideas and see which one comes out on top anyway. It's good to have multiple methods of achieving the same goal so we can see the pros and cons of everything and develop further based on that. It gives us more paths to choose from.
      The real solution is to make more people developers.

    Most of the button mapping and TDP controls for other handhelds are done by the bazzite team. If you have a handheld that they have not handled yet, you can go to their forums so the community can add support.
    Also, shipping Bazzite for commercial purposes could have legal issues as it contains media codecs and drivers that are not royalty-free or patent encumbered. Its why upcoming handhelds opt for SteamOS. Still tho I think shipping with SteamOS is miles better than having Windows, and advanced users can make more of it by installing Bazzite if they want to!

    I installed bazzite first time last week on my modest htpc and the fun part is being able to swap out gpu and cpu to get it to a sweat spot for my liking. I started with a 2gb Radeon pro card with 16gb ddr4 and r5 3600. Ran great with indie games and ordered a cheap rx 480 8g for 45 euros and now its great at 1080 and plays anything really at 30 frames or above. The card has dual bios so might try to flash it to a 580 if I think its worth the bother. Best thing about it is the theatre experience and sleep mode from power button like steam deck. Great fun for someone who likes to tinker a little. I've had 2 main issues I've not yet resolved. First is that it wont copy or install games on my nvme either from the motherboard or via external usb case. Second is that I must enable the Hdmi audio output every time I boot. But hopefully with a bit of search ill figure it out. I would really recommend for those who get a kick from this kind of thing especially if you have the parts lying around. Dust off those old gpus maybe. Thanks for a great video.

    Great segment Jeff so i actually switched over form having a i9-9900k with a GTX 1660 6GB and 64GB of DDR4 to now using a Ryzen 5 5600 with a MSI AMD RX 6600 8GB with 32GB been 10 years or so since my last AMD build and have to say there been a lot of improvements and being able to use this ASUS Prime B550m-A WiFi II which funny enough came from a friend who found the parts in a burned house with no damage has been a huge benefit. I may not have a Steam Deck but I do have a NVIDIA Sheild Portable which can still use Steam Link at almost 75 (Mbps) for handheld gaming via 5Ghz as well as a used Quest 2 that is replacing my now died Rift S I used for 5 years. Do these Steam OS's support VR via Steam Link or is that only a full linux OS or Windows?

    It's great for most handhelds. The only issue I have is in regular PCs if your a Nvidia user. I like my 4060, but at this time I can only use the Desktop variant of the OS. The HTPC variant with the SteamOS functionality is not doable at this time. I know this is mostly Valve's fault breaking the compatibility while not fixing it in a timely manner, but still I would love to see Bazzite try to tackle it in their place (and succeed).
    Still Bazzite is a real game changer now. You can now build a ultra budget PC with used old parts that Microsoft will not let you use with 11 (without major caveats), and a RX480/580 for under $200 and still be able to play thousands of games on the cheap. Frankly for the income strapped gamer this makes it perfect to get into PC gaming on the cheap.

      I would recommend trying to find an RX6600 at this point, but you are spot on with your analysis. I have my now very old 6700k desktop PC in my living room, its running Arch Linux purely because Windows 11 doesn't support the hardware. I paired it with an RX6600, and I am genuinely surprised by how capable that GPU is. Though I have moved all my main systems over to Linux since recall was announced, that is a security nightmare waiting to happen. Only system that is dedicated to Windows is my workstation, and purely because I invested in Elgato PCIe capture cards and the Linux compatible alternatives are WAY too expensive. I do also have a Windows drive in my main system just for games that require invasive anti cheat solutions. I very rarely use it though.
      Ive used Linux on and off since 2005, now that gaming has become so easy on it, its a no brainer to use it on older hardware as an alternative to Windows.

    I tried Bazzite on desktop and it was really weird. I have two monitors on my PC and it treated the 2nd as if I had tiny steam deck screen. The 2nd display is 1080p, but it rendered everything super small and canted on screen, and also treated it as the main display with the task bar. My main display worked fine but no task bar. Telling bazzine which screen was primary did nothing, disconnecting the 2nd monitor also did nothing. No i wasn't using the steam deck/portable build, i was using the desktop build. Also it just felt slower than my actual steam deck connected to a 1080p monitor in desktop mode.

      It's probably something to do with switching between game mode/desktop/gamescope or maybe Wayland. Don't know, one of those probably. The system isn't really configured, out of the box, for your specific set up. Sounds like Stock Fedora Workstation KDE would be a better fit in your situation. You can just download all the gaming toys from the software store.

Meanwhile, if there's a demand a new Linux distro (or two, or three) will pop up to fill it. As right here with Bazzite and others in place of an official Steam OS by Valve.

    Chimera os looked good on paper until i tried it and realized my ROG Ally had lost access to full TDP configurations on the fly. Also, the desktop experience isn't great and for some reason chimera wouldn't let me load an ntfs external drive because ntfs-3g was blacklisted by default or something, so i couldn't transfert a keepass file i needed.
    Bazzite on the other hand is fully functionnal however, i ran into odd bugs here and there lately, one of them of which was confirmed to be a bug due to upstream fedora 41. the bug in question was when i switched to desktop, steam would fail to load what's needed to emulat a kb and mouse with the controller resulting in buttons that wouldn't work.

Tried to instal all 8 games from Cyverpunk to fallout nv and non of the games would work, Lutris failed to install any of the games. HGL on the other hand clicked install waited click run, it would run or it would need a different proton or wine, if it needed a new wine try a different version till it would work, at most it would work after 2 - 3 tries.
