The best way to learn to paint is to follow a step by step tutorial for the model you’re trying to paint. Being able to use the same color the artist used and compare your results in real time is invaluable.
It's all about the content. When I subscribe to my favorite youtube minis painter I really don't care about thumbnail. Notification bell is the most important thing.
I really enjoy your videos. That being said, do you think thumbnail importance will remain high enough for a profession to emerge of graphic artists who just make thumbnails for TH-cam videos?
I've made far more videos than are just on my channel and I agree that making thumbnails is the worst part. I hate it. I'm always relieved when i finish the edit and excited to upload and then my heart drops when i realise i still have to do the thumbnail
Trying to copy art styles is how many artists learn various techniques and figure out their own style. Mimicking is how almost all animals learn. Everything is built off that which came before.
I can empathise entirely with the thumbnail anxiety. I have two videos sitting ready to publish that I can’t think of a suitable thumbnail for. It drives me mad knowing that if I don’t knock the thumbnail out of the park, nobody is watching the video I have spent hours working on.
Unfortunately we're really new to streaming and aren't really comfortable with having whole vods up, so we always unlist streams. On our discord it should still be linked though:)
Here's a fun thought experiment. Imagine anything drawn or written onto sheet music or a movie/tv/play script could only be used by that person. I drew a still life of pears, you better find something else. I painted a dark hair woman, that's off the table. I used a C, G, C chord structure, find your own. LUL Artists build on what came before them, it's been like that for a thousand years. The first humans to get out of the storms and draw on cave walls wanted others to do the same, and it became a part of our language. And I'm glad everybody is kind of having fun with this, and really lampshading their own iterations of the weird thumbnail algorithm.
I like this because it requires a lot of self awareness to make a joke about yourself but also know that yeah the jokes are warranted. Squidmar is great with those and he knows how make others know that the jokes are complements if that makes sense
The real question is “Who gives a crap?” When I’m looking at videos the thumbnail plays no part in whether I’ll be drawn to watch that video or not. I’m much more drawn to the title and who is presenting it. I have certain hobby people I like and others that I don’t. If I don’t like your content or personality then I’m not going to view videos on your channel. Let’s be completely honest. Civilisation has been around for quite awhile at this point. Everything is derivative these days. There are no original thoughts in this modern age. Especially in the hobby sphere.
No idea how you would go about it but if it's something that gives you significant anxiety have you considered just outsourcing that part of the process? That way you can focus more on what you enjoy and leave it to someone who is more focused on the art of TH-cam than the art of minis
someone that doesn't know the nieche will produce thumbnails that are going to perform even worse. It's not as easy as to pay a professional designer and automatically receive a thumbnail that your nieche audience will be drawn to, if that makes sense? Also I don't make enough money to outsource.
I don't know about others, but generally when Im looking at thumbnails, I just want to see "what does the mini look like?" And "am I interested in seeing this miniature painted?" Its a shame that it takes so much of your time needing to do more for the thumbnails when it would be better for the miniature painting community if you could spend your time making more videos and painting instead
@@regorminiatures8059 I especially hate the "blurred out" things. I am NOT going to watch something that is blurred out. I want to know what the end-result was, to see if something in there is worth copying, or that I can see an effect and wonder if I know how to do it.
If you are spending so much time for creating a TN maybe you should contemplate hiring a Graphic Designer to do the job or let a GD create several easy to use templates for your future TN. Glad to see that this is not real drama BS.

When you have an "unsuccessful" thumbnail and you take it down, do you just change the thumbnail or republish the whole video again? I've read deleting/or editing something like an IG pic and then reloading it can effect the performance.
At first I wrote a longer comment that just called Squidmar I wanna-be dickhead, but I didn't want to stoop that low. Trov man your videos and content are invaluable and props to you for being a class act
I sympathize with the struggle of making good thumbnails. I will say for me the thumbnail isn't reaaaally part of it unless it is excessively youtubery in which case it does put me off. When I decide to watch a video it is typically because I read the title and it seemed interesting enough to hover over and see what the first few seconds were like and decided to click. Anything that is too youtubery "YOU'LL NEVER BELIEVE... etc." I'm out (except Wizards With Guns because their videos never have to really do with the title). Anything that seems like BS, I'm out. Not sure if that's helpful since I am probably not representative.
Hey, love your stuff. Totally inspirational. And your content is presented in such a different way than Squidmar, who I also really like. I was a small business owner in a sub-culture once, very small and focused. I know their video and your response is all in good fun, but don't let the politics and business marketing side ever wear you down. Remember there are people like me who connect with your style better than theirs. On the flip side, I know this video leads to more views for you and actually becomes a symbiotic TH-cam relationship for your followers and theirs. So as long as it is all positive awesome! I'm guessing it is.
I wonder if a big reason why you have to spend so much time perfecting your thumbnails is because you're catering to an audience of Warhammer enthusiasts who are all about awesome painting and visual stimulation. It makes me want to know how creating thumbnails is different for other audiences.
Is it possible to create your thumbnails in seconds instead of hours with AI? Upload a photograph of your painted miniature with the prompt "create a miniature painting thumbnail for TH-cam in the style of squidmar"
You do you Trovarion - great videos and style so please don’t change. Cribbing from some of the most successful channels is just a sensible business approach!
Personally I don't even look at thumbnails that much cause they don't really make a lot of sense. I just see whose video it is and if the title gets me interested, I click on it.
I Personally like the netflix approach to thumbnails, change it up for the first week of the video and then after that change it once a quarter to bump views
@@thatsheresy oh yeah because youtube is only about pure talent and nothing else matters lol thats why no one watches videos for entertainment, people only do it while actively painting whatever is presented

I've made far more videos than are just on my channel and I agree that making thumbnails is the worst part. I hate it. I'm always relieved when i finish the edit and excited to upload and then my heart drops when i realise i still have to do the thumbnail
Just use AI
It's not like stealing jokes or making a song with the same 3 chords which are worse than genocide.
Trying to copy art styles is how many artists learn various techniques and figure out their own style. Mimicking is how almost all animals learn. Everything is built off that which came before.
this is so incredibly inside baseball.
oh....100%
It's hard not to love Squidmar, he's pushing a little more for entertainment vs teaching...different vibes.
I can empathise entirely with the thumbnail anxiety. I have two videos sitting ready to publish that I can’t think of a suitable thumbnail for. It drives me mad knowing that if I don’t knock the thumbnail out of the park, nobody is watching the video I have spent hours working on.
Seek out the Bill Hicks segment "Coca Cola's future advert", take the advice from it.
Sorry completely unrelated question, but what kind of magnifying glasses are you wearing?
most of the thumbnails look like unbox therapy and there old thumbnails
Dropping this vid so soon is S tier 😅
Where is the original stream video?
Unfortunately we're really new to streaming and aren't really comfortable with having whole vods up, so we always unlist streams. On our discord it should still be linked though:)
Thanks for the heads up Emil!
Here's a fun thought experiment. Imagine anything drawn or written onto sheet music or a movie/tv/play script could only be used by that person. I drew a still life of pears, you better find something else. I painted a dark hair woman, that's off the table. I used a C, G, C chord structure, find your own. LUL
Artists build on what came before them, it's been like that for a thousand years. The first humans to get out of the storms and draw on cave walls wanted others to do the same, and it became a part of our language. And I'm glad everybody is kind of having fun with this, and really lampshading their own iterations of the weird thumbnail algorithm.
did squidmar take down the original video? i can't find it anywhere..
Actually the only one who was trolled by Squidmar was Majorkill for his minibeef with Weshammer
Your thumbnail is hilarious!🤣 Love your humor.😂
I like this because it requires a lot of self awareness to make a joke about yourself but also know that yeah the jokes are warranted.
Squidmar is great with those and he knows how make others know that the jokes are complements if that makes sense
Gosh I hate youtube thumbnails. So trashy.
Except, well except Vince doesn't stoop low like this!
Fun to see Tumbnails are just like old fashion windowdressing. same principal.
I never thought of it like that, but it's so obvious!
I unsubscribed Squidmar a long time ago.
Thanks for confirming that I was right.
You don't like friendly banter and humor?
I don't know about others, but generally when Im looking at thumbnails, I just want to see "what does the mini look like?" And "am I interested in seeing this miniature painted?" Its a shame that it takes so much of your time needing to do more for the thumbnails when it would be better for the miniature painting community if you could spend your time making more videos and painting instead
Exactly the mini is was is interesting, not the dumb faces or idiotic shocking lie titles
I'm pretty sure the whole platform is based on "stealing" others work or we wouldn't be in the position we are in now. It's is the same principle in music, there are only so many notes.
Is Squidmar related to Majorkill?
yes, they are mother and daughter.
Calling em Mommy Majorkill from now on@@trovarion
@@trovarionI had no idea Majorkill was a mother!
@@JoeFlamenco single mother too, hardships everywhere...
This is very ill informed. Major kill is clearly his estranged step sister
I find that this hobby seems to bring the Trolls out to play so it's really great to see some of the big names in the hobby having a laugh and showing appreciation for one another. Excellent video. We're all sneaky thieving Hobbitses at heart :P
I never really look at thumbnails, but I know I'm an outlier
You’ve been thinking of ideas on how to Emilate it? Mmm
I see what you did there.
When you have an "unsuccessful" thumbnail and you take it down, do you just change the thumbnail or republish the whole video again? I've read deleting/or editing something like an IG pic and then reloading it can effect the performance.
You just change the thumbnail. I even explained it in this video.
If only Majorakill had seen this last week....
What's funny is MK is on track to overtake SM's subscriber count.
Great video, and a really fair take on a fun topic
At first I wrote a longer comment that just called Squidmar I wanna-be dickhead, but I didn't want to stoop that low.
Trov man your videos and content are invaluable and props to you for being a class act
I guess you didn't watch the video then
I sympathize with the struggle of making good thumbnails.
It’s funny coz I totally thought this was a squidmar video from the thumbnail 😅
We all stand on the shoulders of the giants that came before.
I disagree with you. In this case S is actually good. They said you did Squidmar better than Squidmar. Congrats!
Hundo P, good art is always good art! Not like we have copyright on a thumbnail style! 😊
Trovarion Miniatures is much BETTER chanel!
Specialy for professional noobs like me.
Is it possible to create your thumbnails in seconds instead of hours with AI?
Upload a photograph of your painted miniature with the prompt "create a miniature painting thumbnail for TH-cam in the style of squidmar"
You do you Trovarion - great videos and style so please don’t change. Cribbing from some of the most successful channels is just a sensible business approach!
never knew how much thought goes into thumbnails - very informative Trov - sorry you need to use your talent for needed thumbnails!
Personally I don't even look at thumbnails that much cause they don't really make a lot of sense. I just see whose video it is and if the title gets me interested, I click on it.
I Personally like the netflix approach to thumbnails, change it up for the first week of the video and then after that change it once a quarter to bump views
@@thatsheresy oh yeah because youtube is only about pure talent and nothing else matters lol
thats why no one watches videos for entertainment, people only do it while actively painting whatever is presented
Your videos are inspiring more in any way 😊 Definitely S tier 😎
I'll do your thumbnails if you don't want to do them!
Got a portfolio?
All art starts with imitation ^^
To be exact: imitation of nature
I wonder if their video was a dig on Majorkill lmao
So meta! I am living in a meta world, but I am material boi.
Is it just me but does the squidmar team resemble James and Harry potter?
Thumbnails must suck to make for the reasons you mentioned. Its 3 hours invested into making something that has a major impact on click-through but doesn't actually contribute to the video itself at all or the content.
inspiration and replication leads to innovation. in the art world a "master copy" is a term that exists for a reason. who better to learn from than those who do things the best?
The thumbnail to this video surely picked itself!
Took 15 minutes instead of 6 hours. Very refreshing!
I watch a lot of your stuff and I'm mostly a fan so there's no shade thrown here but I remember your old logo looking nothing like mine :D
Using Squidmar in your thumbnail that is for a video about Squidmar reviewing you using his style of thumbnail is very meta. Trivarion fan boy here as well.
lol. If I found myself even thinking about bitching about who's thumbnails looked like mine I would... oh, no... I wouldn't even care. Thumbnails are thumbnails. It's all just marketing.
With Thumbnails, I actually notice the odd ones when scrolling, I don't really notice the white circles one, there is s Nerf guy that just uses crazy fluorescent bright colours for the image in a filter, and it really stands out, or M
XR who just uses Bewbs 😂
It s youtube😂 , maybe I ll stop watch their video if they claim this is copying. I discovered em through another TH-cam channel 😂
I love your thumbnails, I wouldn't care about their comments
