@Nice Brain It's the difference between _knowing_ that fact and _feeling_ it. We aren't really mentally wired for anonymity in that way. Having a piece critiqued in front of your peers can be extremely uncomfortable, like you've been stripped naked and everyone is poking and examining your every inch. While the artists in this case do have the separation of the Internet to insulate them somewhat, our ape brains can only conceptualize that intellectually; it still _feels_ like you're being hauled in front of the class to be peeled and scrutinized like a dissected frog.
@@nicebrain6962 it's scary to post something that took you potentially 10 or 20 hours to make online knowing someone will critique your paint job and point out all your mistakes.
This video is amazing. It really goes to show the difference between what an amateur (myself) sees in a miniature and what a way more experienced person sees. There were several models where I thought "hey that looks pretty dang good!" and once you started explaining the criticisms I was actually able to pick it out with my own eyes and understand more of what was going on during the painting process. You see things that I would have never picked up on. Great video, I learned a lot!
I'm currently a quarter way in and this is intimidating to even watch, but at the same time it's probably the healthiest thing I've ever watched when it comes to the hobby. We need more of this. Thank you.

You gave some great advice in this video. I was worreid by people in the comments saying it's brutal, but at no point are you mean or disparaging. Sometimes people seem to forget that being a goodteacher/critic means being possitive and supportive so I'm glad you aren't just ruthless for the sake of seeming superior

The moment you started talking about how the next section would be different because it's a bit pretentious to say what is right or wrong based on creative artistic choices, I subbed. You're not only a legend of a painter, but you're a good human; with a lot of perspective. Not just about painting but life in general, that much is clear.
I think it's kind of funny how much your helpful suggestions sound like the advice I heard in the aquarell class I took. 1) Never use the pur colours you bought. Always mix. 2) Shadows and highlights are a different colour than your base. 3) look out for your focus point. What's your composition? 4) where does the light come from and what does it touch. I like that minis and pictures are from a working perspective so similar. I think beginner's could learn also a lot from looking at other art. Some big portraits in oil for example. I know, I picked up a lot from going to a museum. Even Bob Ross thought me a thing or two. Thanks for the video. I think, I will try something with clothe next. You sparked some ideas in my brain. 😊

For me it was fascinating seeing you just talk through the very advanced painters, highlighting their stylistic choices vs. your preference, it helped me appreciate the models even more and also understand better what details you see as standing out most

This was great; your use of Photoshop to explain your points is exceptionally helpful. I'd like to see hear more about how to paint Tiamat (five-headed chromatic dragon); using multiple (in this case five different colors - and pulling them together in a compelling way. Thanks for the video!
I could be wrong, but my understanding of colours would mean you would need a brown/black body to draw all the colours in to. Not saying it's impossible, but the more colours to put together the harder to do it smoothly. I could be wrong though, it's happened before

This was BRUTAL..... but nobody can feel bad if they are all bad. This was no nonsense criticism and probably one of the most helpful videos about painting i have ever seen. Brilliant. 10/10 will watch again.
I think that we should have the information about their AGE and also since how long they have been painting. Being Honnest isn't bad at all but it can also hurting some painter who maybe just started in this universe. From adult position i think is faire but from youngster i think it's a little bit harsh. My opinion for sure.

I agree with your comment on contrast or speed paints, I've started to use them like I use to use washes. Then I use dry brushing to get layering and highlights.
Its so helpful being shown what the changes you suggest do in real time. Particularly with more extreme gradients, which is something I struggle with myself!
I thought it was going to be hilarious ripping on awful paint jobs. You understand painting from the bottom up and can relate and articulate the most useful information across the entire spectrum. Awesome, and thank you for the video.

I'm enjoying this. Not sure how much I'd have listened personally though, when I first started painting. I was around 6 and it took me like 2 years to thin my paints, despite being told constantly by older hobbyists. I think it's great to do this though, and help the new painters. I feel the level in general has gone up so much since the internet though. I see so many nice armies by new guys.
As I get to the last 1/3 - 1/4 of this critique, I'm getting VERY IMPRESSED with the lovely job many of your followers are achieving! Far better than most of the "pro mini" painters on TH-cam. Are they as good as yours, or a couple other elite professional painters? No...but for hobbyists, OMG, they are REALLY GOOD. Makes me think as long as I keep practicing & learning from sources like Trovarian & Kujo Painting, I'll be able to make some I can be very proud of, too!!🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
As a new painter, i must say, seeing some of these models really makes me feel good about my level of painting, lol.. Glad i found this channel last night. I watched most the video on your orc skin and you really seem to paint very similar to how i paint, i like how you call it "sketch" style, i had been watching other videos and was worried about my style, the time it was taking me to put on layers, ect. I painted for a while a couple years ago but it was just a base coat, dry brush and wash. When i started to paint again a few months ago i started to do more shading, wet blending and got a wet pallet, i learned i like my paints watered down a lot and put more coats. Will be coming back to this channel a lot. Thank you.
I loved this vid! Using photoshop to help show where an artist can improved is a great teaching tool - often these style videos are like "do better" , "contrast contrast", "saturation" however your explanations are of great quality.
I actually really loved the Gold Necron. The one where the brush strokes are a bit rough but I think it looks really great. If the painter sees this - I see you! Good job :D
This is so informational, love the photoshopping to show what you are talking about. one thing I would say is if you do another of these, maybe put up the comparison of your photoshop next to the original picture to show how much of an affect it makes. Thanks for the hard work!

omg this is the best video, i have seen in a long time!!! Super helpfull tips for shading, contrast. The tip for the red cloak, to shade with black color and use a red for a highlight opend my eyes!!! I always use a Pink or Yellow and dont like the outcome xD BIg Thank YOU !!!

That dragon is a miniature of the Dragon Queen Tiamat in Dungeons and Dragons, she literally looks like that.

@@PureCellx fair enough hoenstly, black and white don't need to be the pure colour, I find that a very light blue can often be a great base of white.

As I get to the last 1/3 - 1/4 of this critique, I'm getting VERY IMPRESSED with the lovely job many of your followers are achieving! Far better than most of the "pro mini" painters on TH-cam.
Are they as good as yours, or a couple other elite professional painters? No...but for hobbyists, OMG, they are REALLY GOOD. Makes me think as long as I keep practicing & learning from sources like Trovarian & Kujo Painting, I'll be able to make some I can be very proud of, too!!🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥

Glad i found this channel last night. I watched most the video on your orc skin and you really seem to paint very similar to how i paint, i like how you call it "sketch" style, i had been watching other videos and was worried about my style, the time it was taking me to put on layers, ect. I painted for a while a couple years ago but it was just a base coat, dry brush and wash. When i started to paint again a few months ago i started to do more shading, wet blending and got a wet pallet, i learned i like my paints watered down a lot and put more coats. Will be coming back to this channel a lot. Thank you.
I loved this vid! Using photoshop to help show where an artist can improved is a great teaching tool - often these style videos are like "do better" , "contrast contrast", "saturation" however your explanations are of great quality.
The photoshop is what makes this video. Kujo did the same thing and it's really effective at backing up your critique. Hope to see more of this

I actually really loved the Gold Necron. The one where the brush strokes are a bit rough but I think it looks really great. If the painter sees this - I see you! Good job :D

This is so informational, love the photoshopping to show what you are talking about. one thing I would say is if you do another of these, maybe put up the comparison of your photoshop next to the original picture to show how much of an affect it makes. Thanks for the hard work!

omg this is the best video, i have seen in a long time!!! Super helpfull tips for shading, contrast. The tip for the red cloak, to shade with black color and use a red for a highlight opend my eyes!!! I always use a Pink or Yellow and dont like the outcome xD BIg Thank YOU !!!
