    I was really stuck on things I do on the fly, like brush control, deciding when to tone something down or up. But I realize that the biggest point is all the preparation. Deciding which colors go where, where the light should go in which gradients, thinking about how to reach the spots with your brush beforehand.
    There is no use in overthinking, but with stuff like this clear in your mind you can take a few steps back and actually watch what you are doing to get valuable experience

    Love the vid man. Im kinda new to this mini painting business and this one gave me a lot of tips. I feel like most videos for newbies lack the detail. For example my 1st screwup was applying the shade "all over" just to see it look awful but no video ever goes into that detail because advanced people take some things as obvious.
    18:40 the problem with inner fire is that it can look like a dollar store figurine. Vince Venturella has a good vid explaining how to avoid it but i still feel its very hard to sell as "fire".

    The key for drybrushing without the texture is to make sure the brush isn't actually dry, but moist. This helps spread the paint and it isn't dry, but damp.

    • @trovarion
      @trovarion  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That's smudging and not drybrushing.

    • @mcspiffington
      @mcspiffington ปีที่แล้ว

      @@trovarion He is right though. You do need a minute degree of moisture on the brush. My opinion is, there is a definite difference between an absolutely bone dry brush and one with the SLIGHTEST bit of moisture. For one i don't notice the graining as much and i can get much more control with layers and blending.
      Many people get it all wrong; you should wet the brush and remove all the moisture with kitchen roll first. Apply the paint to the brush and wick off the excuse on a drybrushing palette (piece of primed chipboard or even cardboard) as not to remove the moisture and medium from the paint (thats why you get the weird grainy texture)
      I scream every time I see someone using paper towels to remove excess paint when dry brushing. I wish more people listened to byron, they buy his brushes but ignore his advice lmao.
      I know you have won many many many many awards, thats just my input as an avid dry brusher after 'it all clicked'.

    Regarding the space marine around the 24 minute mark... it is important to understand what is creating a glowing affect. There are essentially two things happening with glows. The first is light catching surfaces around the light source. The second is a halo effect that is caused by the bright light hitting lens of the viewer (whether it's a camera lens , glasses or even the lens of your eye) so it does indeed spill over areas that aren't catching the light. It is an optical artifact that doesn't usually work well when painted onto a 3d miniature because it isn't created at the light source. It is possible to get it to work but most attempts just don't look natural imho.

    @35:00 something we do in the historical scene for this situation where you have all these panels at different angles is mix up 3 different sets of tri tones but all the same color. IE red, triad 1: black, dark red brown, red brown (also consider mixing in some ground color), triad 2: Dark red, dark medium red, red, triad 3: dark medium red, red, red highlight. You can cool or warm each triad as needed. To use the triads: Triad 1 is an panel that faces the ground, mix in ground tones to warm or cool the red, triad 2: an angled plate facing up, triad 3: any panel near horizontal (cool for a sunny sky with some point highlights). It gives you a unified theme but lots of variation in the pannels.

    I'm just imaging the people who would complain that the example of eye glow made using LEDs are not a good example of how you should paint OSL. I think there's a bad habit that exists in all graphic arts where people don't look at references. So much NMM is some painter's interpretation of some painter's interpretation of some painter's interpretation of metal. People look at painted NMM and try to make rules for why it's effective but not at actual references of real metal in the appropriate conditions.

There are a few really good tutorials around, you just need to do a pallet swap for the colors you're using. The concepts are actually pretty simple to wrap your brain around, too.

    Sorry for my english french syntax

    • @Lilliathi
      @Lilliathi ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Colors are influenced by ambient light. If your bright red and blue figure is standing in a green forest, both red and blue will be pulled towards green. This is how normally clashing colors can still look good together. Another option is simply to pick a color scheme that already looks good together. There's no real trick to it, but there are websites that can help you pick color schemes.
      Value has nothing to do with color, it's simply the shades and lights that imply form. If your values are bad, the figure will be less readable. To check your values, make a picture and apply a black and white filter, or look at your figure through a piece of tinted glass/plastic. If your model still has nice contrast without color, you're doing a good job.

      Indeed, desaturation is one way to create cohesion, because you pull all the colors to grey. But there's no reason you can't pull them all towards a color of your choice instead. This is exactly what happens in real life environments.

It's always a pleasure to get the professional take of someone much more talented than I am at painting minis. I never comment on youtube videos, but this time I made an exception to explain why I won't watch this video, whose quality I don't question. The reason is the title : I realize, obviously, that as a content creator you have to balance doing what you love and attracting viewership. And I also realize that "DESTROYING viewers Miniatures in SAVAGE feedback video" is much more eye-catching than "pro painter thoughtfully explores areas of improvement for his viewership's minis". But still, this level of clickbait is absolutely ridiculous, in my humble opinion. And let me say for the record that it is clearly a widespread problem, and not only yours. The reason I posted this message is that the upside of clickbaity titles, for content creators, is clear, but I wanted to point out that there is also a downside to clickbait, which generates frustration in viewers like myself, potentially leading to straight-out loss of viewership. I am aware that it is important for you to have engaging titles for your videos, I'm just convinced that there is a better balance to be found between engaging your viewers and not getting into this kind of shameful clickbait. Thanks anyway for your hard work !

      No clicks no content my friend. Which do you prefer? Getting 10.000 views on a video I worked 50 hours is not justifyable. What do you want me to do? Stop making youtube videos? Because that's what will happen.

      I see comments like this, and I have no idea what the angle is. Just seems like entitled nonsense; clickbait is proven to work at generating new interest, and is thus an essential tool for a content creator growing their fanbase. I don’t see what the problem is, it takes all of 30s to establish whether a video is worth your time, one is able to navigate through it at will and one is able to leave at any moment. How entitled do you have to be to find access to master-level teaching and knowledge at no immediate cost to oneself frustrating?!
