    Awesome build, downside I feel like I can smell the bone dust lol

      TRUE. The bone dust has a….. smell. That being said the ring doesn’t smell so it’s a short lived problem.

    Another thing you can do if youre looking for an antique look is leave your ring in coffee for like 2 minutes. You can leave it in shorter or longer and it will stain it more. You can then sand back the high points and get contrast too.

    Dumb question: How durable is dried out bone? Like if you wore this daily would it survive?

    • @SkillTree
      @SkillTree  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It would indeed! Bone is super durable. It can crack and chip, sure, but in general it seems to have the resilience or a hard plastic

    • @stevehanek6978
      @stevehanek6978 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I made a ring from whitetail antler. I've worn it daily for a month now. No problems with it . I even wear it working in my shop. If you don't seal it with a clear coat you can soak it overnight in 3% hydrogen peroxide to bring back the clean bone look . Just don't make it a habit. H.P. will eventually weaken bones.

  • @nearlyheadlessbrick2735

    Another fun (and useful) thing to try is using this to make a thimble ring for sewing, just carve or drill a series of tiny divets along the ring to catch and push your needles with, i made one from antler for my larp ranger kit

  • @andrewmize823
    @andrewmize823 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Bone is porous and fairly brittle, so it's also a good idea to use a stabilizing agent. It'll be a lot less delicate that way.

    (Sandi) Ck3ver, you did a version of an ancient technique called skrimshaw. Skrimswaw can be shallow etchings in bone or horn to carved pieces like what was made with the skull. Thought you would like to know what it was called in case you didn't know, When you do the "etching" version, how deep and/or wide the cut is made is how darkk the mark is. Early skrimshaw as done with a sharpened nail, a knife's point, or a sharpened pike. Some skrimshaw was used to decorate boxes, flat pieces, make bone maps, or ven a "clacker" books. All sorts of interresting things. I hop down so many rabbit holes, they're starting to call me 'Alice'.

    When I first saw this I was wondering how you made the inside of the bone, whatever the marrow channel is called, smaller to fit a finger. It makes me feel a bit of the fool to not properly think in three dimensions.
    Great build btw, I will have to try this one soon.

  • @tehsquirreldude

    Love this build, but I feel like having a shopvac nearby to sweep up the dust would be a better option, making that stuff airborne seems like a bad idea, even if you wear a mask.

  • @lukasvoncanal2047

    I’m glad you chose to do a nice sturdy material, because most of the time, I use wood to make my rings, and after about a month, they break.

  • @jarekmace1536
    @jarekmace1536 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Another weathering idea would be to thin down some brown antiquing gel and wipe that over or dip the ring in it. Wiping afterward and buffing would keep the dye in the deep crevasses in the bone.

    That was awesome! No drink or ring on today? I love some other places with DIY but yours is super cool stuff and just listening and watching you is fun and very nice on the eyes. Love that work shop. Ever do anything with WEREWOLVES? Last Halloween I had a prop that turned on with movement detection. I eyes on the plastic poster lit up and it growled. This Halloween I took out the lights and sound mechanism from the poster and put it in a super cute text bear. That should be fun. I'm truly wicked. Birthday 11-6-66

      Thank you! And yes, I am married to my shorter, more intelligent half 😄. I just didn’t wear the ring because I used it to measure out the project and forgot to put it back on. That being said, some days I just don’t wear it in general, depending on what I am working on. Thank you, as always, for watching! Always nice to see you in the comment section.
