    Slightly more expensive than work gloves, but Harbor Freight also has leather welding gauntlets. Those almost look perfect for LARP or Renfair with a dye job.

    Simple, and effective! Can't ask for more. One time as a youth I tried for something similar, got some leather gloves off mum, snipped the fingers off... and they basically came apart over the course of the day because I had no idea about securing the stitches I'd just severed. Anyway, good news was, they were a rather expensive pair of kid leather gloves, mum didn't know I was going to destroy them let alone keep them, and some valuable lessons were learn'd that day.

    • @SkillTree
      @SkillTree  2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      For sure need to stitch the fingers I can see that happening eventually. Thanks for the heads up.

  • @M4st3r0fN0n3
    @M4st3r0fN0n3 2 ปีที่แล้ว +11

    I used a $10 pair of work gloves similar to that for an archery glove and matching left hand glove. I had to restitch certain parts to get the fit i wanted and also had to remove the elastic from the cuffs. After adding a couple hooks and eyes for closure, it was a perfect fit and looked great....shouldve sealed the dye though.....
    As a note, you may want to lock stitch just the end of the fingers where you cut so they dont come undone mid larp

    • @SkillTree
      @SkillTree  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Good call! On the sealing too. Don't wanna dye your hands lol

  • @jarekmace1536

    Looks great! And on the cheap, which is every LARPers's goal... As Taurusus mentioned in their comment, you may want to put some locking stitches in the seams at the end of the fingers. They WILL split apart over time. Also, more of an aesthetic than a necessity, most archer bracers are slick to the inside so that the string doesn't catch. What you have would be more of a Rogue thing. You may find that you have to hold the bow with your wrist rotated inwards to keep the string from catching, much as you would if you were shooting with bare arms.

    • @SkillTree
      @SkillTree  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      For sure on the stitching. It is funny, I have been shooting bare armed for my whole life so I think I didn't notice an issue with these because it is just how I shoot 😅

  • @craigbryant9925

    I've been pondering a similar project and definitely picked up a couple of ideas here that I'll include.
    Generally I don't use an arm guard for archery but if you try actually shooting with those you may find that the straps become a bit of a nuisance. I'll likely go the route of using a piece of leather that is laced at the top so that if a bow string does happen to hit forearm, it's a smooth piece of leather with nothing to catch on.
    These look really cool though but maybe more rogue (or maybe even monk) than ranger , to me.

    If you're considering making a cloak may I suggest a shortish one. I had a long flowy cloak at my LARP and to be honest it really got in the way more than I would like. I think a shorter one would be dope for a ranger too.
    Any chance you can look into making footwear of some kind? Even some ideas on turning an old pair of boots more medieval-y. That seems to be the one bit of kit that I have a hard time with due to having big feet.

    • @SkillTree
      @SkillTree  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    • @johnbatty5055
      @johnbatty5055 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Trick I found with long cloaks is to wrap your belt around it. It takes a bit of arranging to get that cloaked feel without the problem of having it too tight to move your shoulders and arms but it literally ties the thing together quite nicely for running around the bush and trees :) It's a bit of a hassel to undo if you find the need but worth it I find. Nothing like a long cloak to keep warm in the cold rainy night :P

    • @xfgnjsdfn
      @xfgnjsdfn 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've found that the best cloak length is just at/below the knees. Still gets full "swoosh" factor and protection without the tripping hazard and dragging through the mud.

    The purpose of gloves is to protect your hand. Removing the fingers “look cool”. (Tastes vary) but greatly diminish the protection they offer. If you’re worried about dexterity, go a size smaller on your gloves.

  • @carthius
    @carthius 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Nice nice but heres one issue i see with your dominate hand glove. You cut the pointer and middle finger knuckles off where as yes this will give a uniform look. If you do decide to try a Bow you will quickly learn why that was bad idea. The string from the Bow is going to dig into your fingers like A LOT. At first it wont be so bad but the more you use the bow especially for posing for pictures since youll have to hold the position its going to start hurting.
    I would suggest either making a specific glove for your draw hand or make another cheap glove with pointer and middle finger not cut. Also i made my own (first project i actually finished lol) and even with the Thin leather like that that glove is made out of it will still start to hurt after a lot of use but thats where you want to figure Mobility of fingers vs Comfort of fingers

    • @SkillTree
      @SkillTree  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good thought! I have actually been an archer (hobbyists not professionally lol) for a long time now. I think my fingers/forearm are used tobit as I have never taken to using gloves or guards. The only real bother for me has been the fletching cutting me in the space between my thumb and forefinger. It is still a solid tip though.

  • @killerpeachy
    @killerpeachy 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    If you make a cloak arm holes are a really good idea or make a half cloak and you will be all set. I've been larping for 10+ years now and love seeing the things on your channel. I am making a war horn inspired by your drinking horn!!!!

    • @SkillTree
      @SkillTree  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sweet! Have you seen the war horn project I made? They are such fun projects.

  • @mariemacfhionghuin11
    @mariemacfhionghuin11 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    If you ever redo this project you should leave the index, middle, and ring fingers as they are on the main hand, that'll save your fingertips when draw and fire the bow. Those wraps are okay in leu of an actual guard, but my recommendation is a separate glove and a dedicated vambrace on the offhand, preferably one with a brace plate on the backside if melee is to be considered. And remember, hip quivers are superior to back quivers, if not for anything but looking cooler.

      @@SkillTree Wow! I come from a history of 10 years of Dagorhir (feel free to look that up). It's less role play and more about the combat, so it's almost just a sport. No magic, no voices/accents, and certainly no leveling makes it to the Dagorhir battlefield. Whatever you have personally, your own skill, is what you bring to the table (much like, say, a basketball game). That said, outside the field, people love playing roles and making up lore. But this "sport" is full of college kids with no money, so most of their gear is the simplest of the simple, except for those of us who have been in for years. I probably made the mistake of thinking that most larps were the same. But, well, that's my experience. Hey, maybe you should target the Dagorhir folks up get them to up their game?

      @@SkillTree don’t forget to do some sewing the fingers of your gloves now. The severed edges are going to need to be tacked down.

    Anyone happen to know what dye or varnish he used to tint the leather light/dark brown?

  • @mcuprys

    Are you using a alcohol based dye for these? I’m using the dye you recommended for the pauldrons and it’s just not taking.
    I assume these gloves are chrome tanned so that’s the issue ?

    Did the color change at the very end come naturally or is there something missing here?

    👍👍👍👍👍You might need to cut more off from the fingers, once you use them for a while.
