    So, I play the tin whistle and the flute, and one thing I think your viewers might want to know. If they make this flute, they need to do the warbla bone parts first, and then measure the holes, because you changed the length of the sound chamber when you added the bone parts. And that throws off the tuning. But other than that, awesome job.

      Thank you.I appreciate comments with the benefit of long time experience. It's been years since I played flute or recorder (Idid own and was about to learn tin whistle before I stopped) I was seriously thinking about taking it all up again, and this video is a definite incentive.

    This is incredibly awesome as there were actual Viking and saxon flutes made from animal bones (commonly sheep or goat but there were also deer and swan bone flutes). The bones couldn’t be cooked otherwise they would be brittle and have oils that would make the bone rancid over time and so the bones had to be bare of any meat which is frankly… grim. Because the bones were small there were only 3 holes in the top. There’s a TH-cam video about it with a demonstration and it’s absolutely beautiful in a weird sort of way.

    This video was awesome! Next, you should try making an ocarina out of clay. I'm not remotely a skilled clay worker, but this was a really easy project to do. Just an idea.

    • @SkillTree
      @SkillTree  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      So, I was looking into this but I would need to fire it, which I just don't have access to right no now. Maybe one outta woor though🤔

    • @titussturgeon5453
      @titussturgeon5453 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't think the firing is necessary as long as you let the ocarina dry. I just used air-dry clay, which is bad for making ocarinas because it tastes bad. But if you just put normal clay in the oven at like 400 degrees Fahrenheit, I think that would suffice. Also, what is woor?

    • @KarlRoyale
      @KarlRoyale 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      that would be awesome, and you can use scupley clay so it can be baked in a regular oven. I have only made one and would love to see clvr's take on it.

    Looks great! When you were talking about the transition from the worbla bone to the pipe, there is foam clay that works very well with both worbla and pvc. You can sculpt it into shape like normal clay, and when it dries, you can sand it smooth to make a seamless transition. Keep in mind though, it is similar to eva foam when it dries, so please remember to wear a mask when sanding it down.

    A nice 3D printing project might be little plugs that can be plugged into a standard-sized drilled hole while reducing the actual open hole size appropriately. In other words, little stoppers with holes in the center. That way one could drill the holes all the same size in the perfect places along the pipe and plug in stoppers that make each open hole the correct size. This might also allow for alternate tuning schemes using the same pipe, perhaps with an adapter to push on an extender? I can see this going so many ways to make a more flexible and yet compact instrument. Alas, I don't own a 3D printer nor have the skills to design such items.
    I have played multiple woodwinds in the past and still play concert flute and piccolo on occasion. I can see myself fooling around with this build. Thanks!

    This is awesome! Seriously great work. Only critique is the wash. I’m a miniature painter by trade, and the reason to use a wash and not watered down paint is because the wash has lower surface tension. If you use watered down paint, especially on a glossy surface, it’ll bead up.

    You're all alone, everyone you knew is dead and gone. Tomorrow is your birthday but you don't care, there's no one left to celebrate with you. Suddenly, you hear that familiar song on the wind, "Happy Birthday" seemingly played on a flute. You look out the window, there's only trees blowing in a light breeze. The doorbell rings out into the house. Through the peephole you see a figure cloaked in tattered black robes. The figure turns to face you with a ghastly visage, and that song you abhor is coming from the wind blowing through its ribcage! The door forcibly opens, the song abruptly stops as this... thing steps inside, the clockbell chimes midnight, this is it, the Reaper has come for you, the end is nigh... he's... handing you a cake. You and Death sit and chat for a bit, he gives his name, Azrael. As he departs, he lets you know all your old buddies wanted to wish you well, and he just couldn't say no. He tells you that he'll be back next year, then vanishes. You think to yourself, "Maybe Death isn't so bad after all." You proceed to come back from a near fatal stroke to find you've been in a hospital for three weeks, and that you were experiencing cardiac arrest for the past thirty minutes, exactly how long you sat talking with that deathly angel.

    I'm glad I saw this video before August!! :D I'm going to a LARP in Canada in August and I'm going as my D&D Ranger! I used to play flute in High School ages ago and still have mine at home. I wanted to take it to play as a musical instrument during the LARP but it isn't exactly decorum or go with my character's aesthetic. So seeing this and how it could tie into my character and play?? That's super dope. I just hope I can actually get it right! But it doesn't hurt to try regardless c:

    If anyone wants to do this with an even more corpse like appearance, you can add sinew or old flesh looking effects with toilet paper. Get the cheapest tissue you can find, lay it on the plastic and then drag a tongue depressor dipped in liquid latex over it. Give it a bit to dry and then use a toothpick or wooden skewer to pick up the toilet paper, you can use additional latex to smooth lines and create remnants of ligaments on the surface. Also you can take some red silk yarn and lay it on, covering with more latex to create blood vessels. Then, use wood stain to add color to the effect, a red chestnut will look pretty bloody and a darker walnut will give a more “pulled out of a grave” impression. We used to do this with medical education skeletons to make them a bit more unsettling.

      Interesting! No expert but I thing to achieve that you may need to make the instrument wider. The resonance chamber is what dictates the tone. A larger chamber means the air doesn't vibrate as fast which makes for a lower tone. I would be interested to see if a short but "fat" flute would work at all. Let me know what you find.
