Yu-Gi-Oh need a Pokemon-like smogon balance. Limit/unlimit which power cards can be added to archetypes. Restrict handtraps from tier 1 archetypes, allow power cards like Pot of Greed in 'fun' archetypes, and balance anything in between. Banning, limiting, semi-limiting works fine in a card pool under 500, not over 15,000.

It's gone too far. I've been playing Yugioh for 23 years, and it doesn't even seem like Yugioh anymore. Look at Call of Duty for reference; they kept adding more and more tech to the game, to the point of making the game set in the literal future with mechs and power suits, and people hated it. Some things work they work. I'm not saying innovation is bad, but if that innovation breaks away from what drew in the majority of fans, then it becomes a shadow of its former self, just to try and seem all shiny to newer players

They need to implement “seasons” in the TCG. Each season they should create a new ban list and introduce new cards at the beginning of the season.

This isn't power creep. In the last 1-2 years, Yugioh has gone through 3 (maybe 4*) Tier 0 formats. That is more of a "Power Jump" than it is a small power creep.

The best part of Yu-Gi-Oh is the interactions on both players turn. However, it becomes a problem when it goes beyond interaction and becomes your opponent playing on your turn. It's annoying going second when you just sat through their ten minute combo, just for them to do another ten minute combo during ''your turn''.

Ecclesia the Virtuous for example is a fully playable starter card going first but if you go second she gets a bonus effect by summoning herself for free. Archetypes should be designed with more cards like this which are good going first but better going second. Mulchummy already showed how a handtrap can be designed to be only usable going second so there's nothing stopping in-archetype handtraps from doing the same, locking their handtrap mode behind going second while being a starter or extender going first. This type of design can be done right

Their own design is to blame. They introduced nibiru to curb combo decks. Then they make decks rhat can stop nib before 5 summons. Then they made quick play spells that beat droll and lock bird. The only ones that are hurt are those who play older decks. They are basically forcing you to play modern decks which are often short printed and expensive.

But because Kaiju’s exist decks needed to put out boss monsters that can do more for less. Then we go back to not running as many Kaiju’s. Which brings me to my actual prime example of power creep, “Underworld Goddess of the Closed World”. This card answers towers like monsters while being a semi towers monster in being immune to non targeting removal because non targeting removal seems to get printed on every other card nowadays. On top of it having an anti monster reborn effect because odds are the monster you linked away to summon her has some form of recursion.

I have noticed over time cards designed in such a way that plays around pre-existing ones, it is kind of annoying. Because by doing this they kind of put us in a box where they make a problem, give a solution, then make a new problem that can't be fixed with the solution, only to sell a new solution. It's like how nibiru is only good if they don't put a negate on field before you can use it, and in comes Kurikara that just does not care and then punishes for the opponent using a boss monster specifically so you can take it.

Yep, and even other cards like Rose Fairy too which was clearly intended archetype design since Witch of the Black Rose synergizes with it and then they went even further with Ruddy Rose Witch which literally allows you to set them up exactly for it by allowing you to add WotBR, stack the deck, normal summon WotBR and then grab it using the effect.
Watapon I can understand since it's not an integral part of any deck, but Rose Fairy should be pretty hard to forget.

These days I only play competitively with meta/rogue decks and have a passive interest in trying out time-wizard formats. At least competitive is easy to define:just bring the best cards that are legal. I think the bigger picture problem is not the just competitive scene. Since it's always going to be the strongest decks. It's the local/casual scene that gets demolished because the power levels have increased so much. No matter what the meta was in the past you could always bring your deck to locals and have fun. But in the past 5 years things have gotten to the point where you can't do that anymore. Everyone's decks are so powerful now you will probably get blown out if you bring a tier 3 or lower deck.

Turn 1 is always so miserable now if I don't go first and I'm really starting to contemplate quitting for good. I see SnAsh or bonfire and I just want to scoop. I don't want to even sit through it. Having a few hand traps is not "interactive gameplay". I really don't think ishizu-tear style "turn 0" play is a good remedy to that either. It just makes it all the more worse. It's the reason why everyone I know quit, and even if you get new players up to speed, I don't think many of them can tolerate tolerate modern yugioh. If 40 minutes isn't enough time to finish a best of 3, that's a huge problem.

The overloaded design of so many cards is what gets to me. Cards are never "dead," and while that's great for the decks that use them, I feel like it's bad design for the game overall. Cards special summon themselves for free, do at least one thing on the field, then do something else from the GY (possibly even returning themselves to hand for re-use). There are no windows for counterplay in there unless you just so happen to have the exact hand trap you need, and it's a one-card gameplay loop for the opponent that just feeds into itself to enable even more plays. It really does lend to the joke of "just compare opening hands and decide the winner," which to me is such a shame because I actually do like playing the game! There just needs to be a game in there somewhere to be played.

That felt funny and at least somewhat unique in how it was playing around the problem, on the other hand just being able to play searches in the phases you cannot droll, or like snake eyes playing to field so it just NATURALLY plays around hand traps is annoying.

  • @Em-fq9gw
    @Em-fq9gw 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

"It's not your turn, it's *our* turn", is the only way YGO can be interactive with how powerful it is and it leads to a lot of very nuanced interactions when done correctly, ie. the disruptions happen in ways that are more interesting than negates. Using quickplays to dodge effects and summon stuff on the opponent's turn is a neat dynamic, and I think getting pissy about the opponent playing on your turn is kind of a goofy line to draw, as if yugioh has adhered to such rigid rules as that for the past 10 years. The games where you're more or less playing simultaneously but the turn changing the nuances of priority/breadth of effects that can be used are absolutely the most interactive the games can get. I also think decks need some kind of resource loop to allow them to play the game if their initial board is compromised otherwise the game becomes hand comparison and resolving a board breaker (of which there are several preposterous examples) becomes an idiot mode checkmate. Yugioh doesn't have a large natural influx of resource because you start with few cards and you only get 1 card per turn, and we obviously don't like when the game is decided in one turn. Granted, single cards do a ton on their own, but not enough to continue playing the game if your board gets broken and they counter-establish on you. With how many cards go into generating a board, the only way for it to *sometimes* not devolve into single turn shootouts is if you can maintain and re-establish board if the opponent doesn't manage to kill you through your opening. Obviously this works a lot better when you're not generating The Board of All Time FTK-tier layered negation lockouts and shit, but when it works I think it works very well and it's the dynamic that I think makes modern YGO, in spite of all of its massive design failings, compelling. Branded is dope is what I'm saying.

Also like we are now seeing most of the decks in this meta being reliant on different engine pieces to get their combo’s going like Tear using Horus or Lightsworn, Rescue ace/ fire king using snake eye, Snake eye using kashtira, Thunder dragon using bystials/ melodious/
The wanted engine, the adventure engine, Punk Engine, Fiendsmith the millenium engine, unchained engine, runick engine. Instead of a deck just being consisted of primarily one archetype its a mesh of one or many engines to be reliant on playing. Forcing out many interrutions and making the choke points harder to detect. I think its not a problem but i do think the amount of resources these engines gives players is insane esp with little restrictions. Power creep ftw

    @jeremyranger4260 หลายเดือนก่อน

A lot of what you stated were simply facts. What I would add is that I feel 95% of decks/archetypes released before 2020 needs 2-3 cards with updated mechanics to keep up, most of them would have to be replacing the core engine of the deck itself to make them viable.

  • @omegaelement
    @omegaelement 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

Power and Feature Creep combined, and I deal with it by playing decks that aren't part of the meta/competitive scene. Konami has dug themselves into a hole, and aren't smart or creative enough to dig themselves out of it, so we're just going to keep seeing this trend escalating. I had a thought while listening to the video though, regarding the whole Poplar thing with it skipping a step by being able to summon itself after being searched. I think a lot of issues started with the whole 40 card deck meta!
With the option of having a small total deck size, the game quickly became about keeping as small a deck as possible to maximise efficiency, and that mind set from players has leaked into the design of the game as a whole. A big chunk of the power creep has been in the form of making things more efficient, having to use less and less cards to achieve a stable end-board as fast as possible. The result of this being things such as Poplar's effect, one card combos in general, the vastly generic requirements on Link summoning, and the gradual replacement of trap cards by low/no cost monster effects and spell cards that do what trap cards used to do!
It really makes me wonder what the state of the game would be like if it had a strict 50 or 60 card deck size like every other card game?

@@ducky36F The problem with your point is that it only works when talking about competitive Yu-Gi-Oh, and on that front I agree with you, if you want to play competitive games you can't really complain about not wanting to figure out ways to tank negation.
The thing is that this is a Yu-Gi-Oh problem, not a Competitive Yu-Gi-Oh problem. You can be at an official tournament, locals or casual play at the local game store, the match is usually decided by turn 2 or 3, because hand traps are required even at the for fun level since otherwise your opponent will probably combo for 8 minutes and bust out some boss monster that can't be removed by anything short of a Kaiju or a massive beatstick, and then the game is decided by who went first.

Personally I super like modern YGO philosophy, because a lot of new archetypes have been learned lessons of previous experimented game plans to expand and improve what made a lot of them cool.
But YGO also would benefit from more frequent utilization of alt formats as a form of experimentation, as it is a game that is increasingly leaving players in the dust, even if they're making more efforts to extend the olive branch of staples and whatnot to newer players. If there's anything learned from Master Duel's event formats, there's some strong potential for creativity and diversity in curated banlists/card pools.

    This Monster:
    Lv 10
    Atk: ? Def:?!
Effect: (Quick Effect): If your opponent has cards in his or her hand, you can Special Summon this card from your hand. If your opponent has Life Points, this effect can be activated while this card is in your Graveyard. When this monster is Special summoned, Special Summon 1 "That Monster" from your Hand, Deck, Graveyard, or Banished.
    That Monster:
    Lv 10
    Atk 69420 Def: 9001
When this card is Special Summoned, you can Tribute this card to Special Summon 1 "Wtf" from your Extra Deck or Graveyard. Your opponent cannot activate cards in response to this card's effect if he or she has cards in his or her Hand or Field.
    Wtf:
    Atk: 90210 Def: 8675309
Once per Turn, during either player's turn, you can Special summon as many "This Monster" and or "That Monster" to your field as possible, from your Hand, Deck, Graveyard, or Banished, then Draw 1 card for every Monster Special Summoned by this effect. If you opponent has vowels in their name, Banish 1 card from his or her Hand, Field, or Graveyard Face Down for every card drawn by this Effect, then deal 1000 damage to your opponent for every card Banished by this Effect. If your opponent hasn't Surrendered during this Duel, you can activate this effect 1 additional time per turn for every card in your opponent's Hand, Deck, Field, Extra Deck, and/or Banished.

Personally I think that the straw that broke the camel's back was the Ishizu support for Tearlament. Tear was already strong on its own but letting it build a full board on the opponent's turn in their draw phase was sickening. Kash wasn't any better with the 9 zone lock, but that was a byproduct of cards working together to be good, and had nothing to do with the overall speed of the game in the same way that Tear did.
Remember back in 2016~17 when Zoodiac was at full power and we thought that the game was basically over? Remember when Master Peace was THE boss monster? Remember when ABC was a tier 1 deck? Nowadays nobody would play those other than as splashable engine cards to get link material on the field and Master Peace would be considered a brick. Full power ABC is a joke by today's standards. Its actually insanity how high Konami has jumped the shark when you really examine the way the game was being played just a handful of formats ago. Gate Guardian support was considered a rogue pet deck at best, but pre-Link era having 2 quick effect negates on a single monster with decent stats would be seen in every single deck in the top cut. The power creep problem is getting out of hand in every possible way.
Some other commenters have mentioned about how the next step is "if you have this card in your deck, you can special summon it from the deck" but like.. we kinda already have that, the cards just suck. The Charmer cards' Awakening companions do that for the elemental types as long as you have cards on the field already. Like I said, they suck, but power creep will find them soon enough.
On your segment toward the end about older decks not being able to keep up, a great example is Dark World. The new structure deck came out and it was middling at best, again seeing rogue play and very little success overall. A competent deck without the tools to deal with what was strong at the time. Meanwhile if those cards had come out 10 years ago, Dark Would would be in the history books as one of the most insanely one sided formats of all time. A similar argument could be made with many of the new Blackwing cards. The new support they release for older decks is never very good, but it's built that way on purpose because they want to push product and force players to spend money. In the most recent set Lightsworn got a bunch of new cards that do a LOT for the archetype, but they don't provide nearly as much value as say Kashtira Fenrir. If they did happen to be as good as Fenrir, why would players buy the new, expensive cards to power up an already expensive deck, when they can just buy a handful of the new Lightsworn support cards and dig the rest out of their bulk, and still hang with the big boys? Konami knows exactly what they're doing. Everyone has 800 Lightsworn cards just laying around in their bulk, so there's no money to be had in making them meta again. The same applies for every older archetype. Konami won't make them good because they know it costs them, so their solution is to make ~okay~ support for old decks and make the new decks so over-the-top that there's no excuse to play anything else if you want to actually play to win.
On that same note, I'm a little worried about the state of the game regarding Tenpai Dragons. An entire archetype that can go toe to toe with Fire King Snake Eyes, and printed in common, is concerning because that means that the next set they release will have to be even stronger than Tenpai while being near the same price point to get people away from it. The only saving grace would be a ban list but I don't think Tenpai is making big enough waves in the current meta to really justify a ban for anything. Maybe a limit or a semi but I don't think they'd nuke the strategy completely, though I am admittedly a little out of touch.
TLDR Konami is focused on money first and it shows more and more with every decision they make (or don't).

I see a lot of comments calling it "power leap", but if it's such a case, it's more like a "hard reset". They either printed new cards for EVERYONE that catches them up, or they print a wave of new decks, but there's no other choice outside of those options.
There's META, and then there's OTRR (only tactics remaining relevant), when the META has become so diluted, you may as well be asked "choose 1" with only 3 options.

There were two points that really jumped at me as I was watching.
1.- Playing in your opponent's turn: Yu-Gi-Oh, like many other card games, is built on that idea. Yu-Gi-Oh has arguably the most iconic way of doing it in trap cards.
I think the issue is that with power creep making the speed of the game what it is, games are slow in real time but extremely fast in game turns, it leads to a bad game feel when it happens and to the extend that it does.
2.- The recursion talk really made me look back and think about how decks that had very powerful recursion used to be unique and usually focused around it. But now it feels like power creep is making it a generic trait for new-ish decks, and I think beyond how it takes old decks out of contention, it makes new decks less differentiated from one another.
I wish the game could support more variety in play styles but unique tends to equal bad, especially so in the current state of the game.

I think Konami is learning to make archetypes that trade vs standard hand traps more fluidly than the t2 and rogue decks out there.

One power creep thing I've noticed and hate is when a card says 'if this card leaves the field from your opponents card'. This triggers basically all the time and it's hard to play around it. The weaker version would specify how it left the field or if it is sent to the grave. This power crept version is too strong.

i don't think they can keep this up forever, but it doesn't seem like that's a problem to Konami until they reach that point
the interruption vs combo arms race will keep getting out of hand until they literally can't, with a lot of rouge decks suffering collateral damages
right now combo is ahead with Poplar and the rest dodging already existing interruption
next Konami will start printing hand traps that counter Poplar and the rest

i definitely think the power creep is a bit annoying.. mostly just due to the time consumption, i feel like my opponents turn takes 10 minutes, and then when they pass it to me i play 1 card (or just draw lol) and then they start playing again (on my turn!) for another 10 minutes, and often end on a board i cant play a single card into, and due to how little resources are required to do those combos, they often have a ton of hand traps for my turn, it makes me feel like i lose before i even start :( and i just want to play some cards too!

SE Poplar is not unique. Machina Unclaspare has a similar set of effects to Poplar, it summons itself if added to hand and it pitches a Machina from deck to grave on normal/special summon. The big difference between them is that Unclaspare locks you into Machine type special summons if you use his self summon effect. Machina Gearframe into Unclaspare predates SE Ash into SE Poplar. The big difference is the lack of a lock with SE and their ability to extend beyond their initial search effect. Machina can be shut down much more easily compared to SE, Ashing an Ash doesn't immediately invalidate their combo line as they can still use his effect to special a SE from deck.

I don't mind powercreep because like you said, a lot of games do this. But like a lot of ppl in the comments already said; it should not be a power JUMP.
I also believe Konami should make more and better support for older archetypes. Lots of old school players are turned off because of the boring snake eye meta that has been going on for a while now. I think new support will keep the community satisfied and genuinly will make the game more fun.
Also maybe the gap in power between archetypes will be made smaller that way

The problem with tier 0 decks Isn’t the power of the decks it’s the price. Most people can’t afford the top decks, which focuses players to buy the top deck or either drop the game until they balance or get crushed at every tournament

"The cheat" is by far my feast favorite piece of power creep that has been introduced lately. Stuff like "our turn" is certainly up to personal preference, it has its pros and cons. But the cheat is just stupid. There's nothing interesting about it, it just says "you can't interact with this." Playing around stuff like Droll and Ash is a big part of what makes modern Yugioh interesting and the cheat just ignores it in favor of ignorance and giving Konami an easy way out. Want a new deck to be better than the old ones? Just make it immune to Ash/Nibiru/Droll/whatever.
