@@mads_in_zero Same. Especially the lines no one sees coming. Once decked out a 4 player commander pod in mono white. Been chasing that high ever since.
@@mads_in_zero it parallels a moment in the original series where Yugi does this to the big bad of the season, in which he's up against an unbeatable Egyptian god monster, which a lot of people fondly remember as being very ingenious and a testament to him being the real king of game, that even someone wielding the power of a god can't beat him. It's funny that the way they present Maxx "C" being activated is the same way they did with the Egyptian god cards, and that the win condition is the same: deck-out. And funnily enough, when this happened for the first time (in the manga? I think?) they had to change the rules of the actual OCG because it didn't originally have decking out as a loss condition, or so I hear. It's truly a highlight of the story, one of the best duels in the arc for sure, and I'm so glad this parody unironically uses the same "cool factor" of finding an unconventional way to win against what seems like an unbeatable advantage.
Actually there is something funny I saw no one point out. People mention Niburu can't be activated during the Battle Phase. But D.D. Crow could have stopped Colossal Fighter.
@@Raphael4722 That was my point. The meta hand traps like Blossom failed him where D.D. Crow would have saved him. To further this point if Joey had Blossom instead he wouldn't have been able to stop Weevil's graveyard effect.
@@phantom-ri2tg But colossal fighter activates in the damage step so you wouldn't be able to use crow Also crow is still not a terrible handtrap but ghost belle would have also done the same thing and is more "meta"

Joey learned one of the most important lessons for being a pro duelist: Your lifepoints are another resource meant to be spent. It makes no difference whether you finish with 8000 or 80 lifepoints.
You know, seeing how power creep and no "mana" mechanic ate the gams from inside out i wonder. What will be the next game mechanic that will degenerate?
It is always fun when they do these gimmick duels in the anime. I know Jaden had a pretty entertaining one as well in GX Season 2, fighting against a guy who's whole strategy was to cause a deck out, and then reversing it if I recall correctly.
Unironically the best Traptrix tutorial I've ever seen. Every other creator I've seen plays too fast. I realize the game makes you do this to set up a half decent end board in the time allotted, but then I'm caught trying to take notes from a lecture.
For anyone wondering if what Joey did was possible here's the math because I was bored Assuming Weevil was running a standard 40 card deck he did the following Opening hand -5 (35) Pot of desires -10 (25) Draw 2 from desires -2 (23) Added field spell -1 (22) Added bottomless trap hole -1 (21) Set holeutea from deck -1 (20) Special summoned arachnocampa from deck -1 (19) Maxx draw for special summon of kaiju, FS, and first Colossal Fighter -3 (16) Joey would have to crash 16 times to deck him out with CF taking 300 (or 100 since CF gains 100 for every warrior in the graveyards in this case he is at 3200 vs 3300 kaiju) out of his remaining 7000 life points and after looping Joey is left with 2200 life points to deck him out (or 5400 if CF effect was taken into account) And if you're wondering why Weevil didn't Nibiru its because you can't during the battle phase
Thank you I was wondering about Nibiru I thought maybe it was because he was summoning the same monster every time and there was some weird wording that precludes it from working, never ran into that situation so I didn't know it didn't work during the battle phase.
@@ItsConnerKing True, but I'm just disappointed his modern deck is still trash. It fits Joey though I guess. At least he didn't pull a Yusei where he summons cards from thin air to place on top of his deck mid-duel.
@joelww2501 Traptrix actually IS an insect/plant archetype funny enough (maxx c is also insect). Kaiba is just updating "anime meta" (big attack go brrrr) to real meta so pretty much in character, he is the only one relying on skill and intellect in the anime and not heart of the cards BS.
I mean it's funny (and useful to keep you updated if you don't play meta), but thematically it's kinda shit. (That's why this video is good: Joey actually used some of his cards). Zoomers' cards like Traptrix would NOT fit into Yugioh first series. Not even remotely. While updated version of legendary decks like Kaiba, Yugi, Joey, Jaden, etc. could fit well. But I see it's not as funny or "4th wall breaking" like contemporary audience like.
@@TiomesTheOne You mean anime bait archetypes with long card effects like Traptrix would not fit into the original series which, surely unlike modern cards, includes waifu bait decks like Harpie Ladys (especially OCG uncensored art, that is legit BDSM gear the deck), waifu staples like Dark Magician Girl and convoluted card texts like the Winged Dragon of Ra. Right?
@mcmisterhd1920 sure, but there was only 1 Harpie Lady deck. There was only 1 Dark Magi Girl. And only one Ra. They were white flies. Og cards were mainly ugly monsters and or spiritual/esoteric being imbued in heavy religious/occult symbolism, with ONLY occasional little comic relief.
@@datstift610 Um... How? This is based on Joey' 4Kids Dub. And 4Kids gave Joey a Brooklyn accent which pretty much became a stable of English staple of Joey at this point.
I wasn’t that surprised- though I would have preferred to see him run Beetrooper or Battlewasp, it still somewhat fits him as it is an insect deck and this is a more modern reimagining of Yugioh. I wonder what Mako and Rex will run? Ghoti? White Aura? Transcendosaurus??
@@pvzbronygodgaming8476 & that's a good point, Beetroopers are a fairly modern & very fun deck, but also... the bit was just too good to pass on, you get that right?
Joey: Sorry Yuge I wasn't able to get your cards. Yugi: Its fine, between you jumping in and being rescued they got limited to 1, banned, put back to 1, banned again and errata'd to be dumpster tier cards so now I'm chasing the new meta.
I also really like that he used flame swordsman, a card he did have, and comrade swordsman of landstar, a retrain of one of his old cards which he used against weevil
Bring on some experts in the modern meta that could come up with some creative duals with lots of twists. Then you just get some good voice actors and writers for the overall anime, and it could definitely be good!
There already is Yugioh OCG Structures which is a manga which is based on the actual game and uses actual meta decks. Like there is legitimately a real climatic battle in that based on the protagonist having to overcome Maxx C.
@@interdimensionalcommunicat9750 that manga is fun, but it also stars kids in elementary-middle school age (though they JUST turned old enough to be high school freshmen) and it's targeted at the same demographic, so while it's cool to see real modern cards, the rest of what's going on is kiddie in a very vapid way. Like yeah sure the anime we grew up with was made for teenagers too, and 4Kids unironically did make it more kiddie and dumb, but it also knew to have real stakes and big emotional character arcs. OCG Structures' character arcs are mostly just about the protag being a ball of sunshine and helping mend dysfunctions in the character relationships between those around him, all of which he solves within the course of 1-2 duels. Well that and the Tour Guide from the Underworld getting a better paying job. They'd have to do better than OCG Structures to make an actually hype anime, but sure, the building blocks ARE there.
I've said for years that a Yugioh anime (or, really, any TCG-based anime) could be really interesting with "real" duels. Literally just make each character a canonical deck, have AI play their decks against each other, pick a good duel and dramatize the events. Slap a story around it, enjoy your 95 academy awards.

@@H3y_Im_Rob he does. starting at 7k LP he can crash 23, and special summon back, times before running out of LP. With the kaiju and FS special summons, that comes out to 25 draws. Weevil started with 5 cards in hand, used PoD to draw 2 and banish 10, then searched 4 cards from his deck during his turn, so his deck should only have (assuming 40 to start) 19 cards in it when Joey's turn starts. (I actually thought this was impossible too until I remembered he opened with Desires. That card is unironically a -9.)
@@flaming_water8603 I did some quick math and yeah, it's plausible for Joey to survive if Weevil's deck is between 40 to 42 cards. He starts with 5 cards, banishes 10, and searches his deck for 4 cards so there would be 21 to 23 cards left in his deck.
FOR ANYONE HAVING TROUBLE WITH MATH: assume weevil has a 40-card deck. weevil has 5 cards in hand to start ( 35 in deck ). pot of desires banishes 10 to draw 2 ( 23 in deck ). pudica adds 1 field spell from deck to hand ( 22 in deck ). myrmeleo adds 1 hole trap from deck to hand ( 21 in deck ). sera's special ability sends one trap from deck to field ( 20 in deck ). sera's special ability summons arachnocampa from deck to field ( 19 in deck ). activation of maxx c. kaijuu summon draws 1 ( 18 in deck ). joey activates instant fusion for -1000 LP ( 7000 LP ). flame swordsman summon causes draw 1 ( 17 in deck ). colossal fighter initial summon causes draw 1 ( 16 in deck ). every attack from colossal fighter causes joey's LP -300. weevil needs to draw 17 more times ( as you lose when you need to draw but deck empty ). 17 x -300 = -5100. 7000 - 5100 = joey wins with 1900 LP. ( also you can't activate nibiru in battle phase ). thank you for coming to math class. ( edited for traptrix spelling )
Gotta point out my personal favorite thing, since its totally a deep cut for a Yu-Gi-Oh audience, but the Hisoutensoku music at the start being used exactly how it was in the game makes me so incredibly happy. It's such a minor detail, but that kind of effort is what really makes these videos shine. Love the content!
People say that you can't make a Yu-Gi-Oh anime with modern gameplay because of the long combos but Weevil's turn definitely didn't feel boring or slow to watch.
@@Honest_Mids_Masher Weren't all the shows played by the somewhat modern style of their era? This is an incredibly made video. This played out exactly like a Yugioh episode but with modern cards and rules, I can only imagine how difficult this must have been to script. You have earned yourself both a like and subscription my good man.
This was amazing! It started as an obvious parody of the differences between the anime and the actual card game, yet it still feels like watching an episode of the anime, including everything anime fans ever loved about the original series and it's crazy comebacks! The callback to Yugi decking out Strings was just... MWAHH *chef's kiss*! And Joey did it with a relatively old-school deck with one of the old-school Synchro monsters! Another callback to various protags winning with seemingly weak cards against an otherwise busted lock!
This is actually peak. The writing feels just like the show (save the subject matter/references lol), the VA/impressions are super good, the editing is *insane*. And all that for a nearly an actual episode's length? Yeah, I played the game about 3 years ago. It fell down hill unfortunately, and their attempt to digitalise was a complete flop. The game is great fun to play but there's just too many issues like FTKs (death before enemies first turn) and Floodgates (cards that disable an entire mechanic, such as spells)
@@ProcuredHatit quite literally has the best online sim out of any card game that has tried it. Ftk’s are gimmicky and inconsistent. The game has changed a lot since it first came out- and every card game has stun cards, it’s not a great point for why the game is bad. It’s just a really hard game.
@@monarchy028 FTKs aren't gimmicky and inconsistent, they've been meta defining and at times tier 0 across the games lifespan. Turns can take 30+ minutes and the game runs with a mishmash banlist that allows Maxx "C". Honestly I haven’t watched Yugioh since GX/5Ds or played in over a decade but this video and Joey’s speech about Change and taking time to learn. Got me abit interested in yugioh again, gonna give Master Duel a look. Haven’t been this interested since I was a kid, Thanks!
I don't know if they're still doing the promo now, but there was/is a promo where if you have a friend who already plays give you a referral code, you get a Swordsoul structure deck for free (not enough to build a properly constructed deck, but it saves you a ton of resources and you can easily look up a list to figure out how to finish filling the deck out.) If you're checking it out, see if that promo is still going on, and see if you can find a friend to give you a referral code. I quickly peeked online and I didn't see any definite confirmation that it's still running, so you might have missed the bus, but hopefully not since Swordsoul is a REALLY good starter archetype: it's powerful but its combo lines are relatively straightforward, the effects on its monsters are pretty easy to understand but are a step up in complexity from the 5D's era, and it's a synchro deck so if you're familiar with 5D's era mechanics then you should have little problem piloting it, and even if not, synchros are easy to learn and the Master Duel tutorials show how they work.
@@RedMufflerMan I really hope Joey's speech gets turned into a short on your channel at some point. A lot of people need to hear it and it's delivered really well.

The unspoken social contract in IRL YGO is that you get one summoning chant per match if you don't make it too long and I love that it was just the right length here too

I lost track of Yu-Gi-Oh after GX, and every time I look at modern Yu-Gi-Oh it makes me want the sick with its complexity. This is really good. I wonder if I watch all the anime I'd be sufficiently caught up.
Basically there's a mini event going on rn where everyone is given a code to give to new/returning players so both the code giver and user receives a swordsoul deck swordsoul is a deck that is extremely easy for newcomers while also being good enough to get you to max rank if you combine them with Tenyi's which you'd have literally no trouble getting so if you're gonna start I'd think it's best to do it before the event ends.
I'd definitely recommend watching some videos about modern yugioh. Get some basic familiarity with how the game has evolved before you get into it. Because the game is VERY different and the learning curve is kinda brutal. The game is fun, don't get me wrong, but there's decent odds that if you just load in blindly, you're gonna get stomped by fourteen different decks with no clue what happened or why you lost. And that can be frustrating.
I picked it up back in November. Take you’re time, stick to solo and save those gems up (you can easily rack up 10 to 20k in solo alone) then splash out for a competitive deck that’s fun to play like Branded or Rescue-Ace. It took me ages to get to grips with the new mechanics as someone who checked out back in the XYZ days. But it’s genuinely a fun game. You will no doubt be overwhelmed at first but like anything once you’ve got to grips with it it’s really rewarding to play. Also plenty of videos out there to learn from. Good luck dude 👍
I don't know much about modern Yu-Gi-Oh!, just the mere basics, like what XYZ and link summons are, and that Maxx C is a famous OP card. But that is more than enough to understand how great this video is. Thank you for everything, thank you for explaining all the stuff happening, and thank you for recreating that episode of Battle City when Yugi beat Strings by decking him out, which was one of my favourite moments as a child.
This really sounds like a line that they might say in the show.

The fact that he misplayed bugs me a lot
It's enough Internet for me
For anyone wondering if what Joey did was possible here's the math because I was bored
Assuming Weevil was running a standard 40 card deck he did the following
Opening hand -5 (35)
Pot of desires -10 (25)
Draw 2 from desires -2 (23)
Added field spell -1 (22)
Added bottomless trap hole -1 (21)
Set holeutea from deck -1 (20)
Special summoned arachnocampa from deck -1 (19)
Maxx draw for special summon of kaiju, FS, and first Colossal Fighter -3 (16)
Joey would have to crash 16 times to deck him out with CF taking 300 (or 100 since CF gains 100 for every warrior in the graveyards in this case he is at 3200 vs 3300 kaiju) out of his remaining 7000 life points and after looping Joey is left with 2200 life points to deck him out (or 5400 if CF effect was taken into account)
And if you're wondering why Weevil didn't Nibiru its because you can't during the battle phase
Thank you I was wondering about Nibiru I thought maybe it was because he was summoning the same monster every time and there was some weird wording that precludes it from working, never ran into that situation so I didn't know it didn't work during the battle phase.
Colossal fighter's effect was taken into account, CF starts out with 2800 atk. Joey only had 2 warriors in the grave, which made it 3000 on summon.
Ah damn I misremembered it being 3k baseline
so basically weevil using pot of desires lost him the duel

@joelww2501 yeah, but now blue eyes got new cards, so strong to break the meta.
I also really like that he used flame swordsman, a card he did have, and comrade swordsman of landstar, a retrain of one of his old cards which he used against weevil
This is literally like a proof of concept that a TCG anime that follows the modern meta would be amazing
Vrains or even Arc-V have many anime decks that made it into the meta. It is indeed very possible.

activation of maxx c. kaijuu summon draws 1 ( 18 in deck ).
joey activates instant fusion for -1000 LP ( 7000 LP ).
flame swordsman summon causes draw 1 ( 17 in deck ).
colossal fighter initial summon causes draw 1 ( 16 in deck ).
every attack from colossal fighter causes joey's LP -300.
weevil needs to draw 17 more times ( as you lose when you need to draw but deck empty ).
17 x -300 = -5100.
7000 - 5100 = joey wins with 1900 LP.

I've never learned so much about modern yugioh than from these parodies.
As an OCG player, the bit about maxx c made me laugh specially the "We live in japan" part
as someone who has absolutely no idea about yugioh as its played today, this was quite the well written video.
I played TCG for several years competetively and enjoyed it but I moved and I was unavailable locally. if you actually want to play Yu-Gi-Oh online competetively then play dueling book.
Bad take. @@ProcuredHat
@@dungeonpastor I mean the entire competetive scene of the TCG would agree
Honestly I haven’t watched Yugioh since GX/5Ds or played in over a decade but this video and Joey’s speech about Change and taking time to learn. Got me abit interested in yugioh again, gonna give Master Duel a look. Haven’t been this interested since I was a kid, Thanks!
This is honestly a big reason I make these videos, to show how cool modern Yu-Gi-Oh can be so this has made my day, thank you 😭
I don't know if they're still doing the promo now, but there was/is a promo where if you have a friend who already plays give you a referral code, you get a Swordsoul structure deck for free (not enough to build a properly constructed deck, but it saves you a ton of resources and you can easily look up a list to figure out how to finish filling the deck out.) If you're checking it out, see if that promo is still going on, and see if you can find a friend to give you a referral code.
I'm gonna warn you that MD might be really frustrating if you don't do some research. Watch some videos about the game, try to find some friends willing to play low power, and for the love of Ra get ready get ready for some of the BS decks that exist right now.
The game's fun, but the learning curve is brutal.
@@MercuryA2000 Thanks I’ll look into researching. Any recommendations for other yugioh games to get me started?
2:13 Hella funny , you should be running an ant farm, not a pre school.
Bro out here making actual full length YGO episodes
The JP summoning chant was so fuckin' HYPE. They're one of my favorite parts of watching Yugioh tbh
The unspoken social contract in IRL YGO is that you get one summoning chant per match if you don't make it too long and I love that it was just the right length here too
The fact that Maxx C is regarded as a god card is hilarious 😂. “After 5000 years…”
Very creative and it is potentially powerful like the real TCG gods can only dream about. 😂
Atleast in this anime verse maxx c is too powerful to be regularly played😂
The amount of effort that went into this brought a tear to my eye. References and easter eggs, irl rule matching, accurate anime pacing, the modern character portrayals, the voice acting, EVERYTHING was just beautiful! Excellent work fam, ggs.
The perfect mix between anime theatrics and genuine dueling
"jokes on you weevil red-eyes fusion only lets me special summon 1 time"
Imagine Joey just pulls out Dark Dragoon right away and Weevil didn't have Ash in the hand to negate, lol.
@@RandoGrunt I mean here he wouldnt as he drew nib then ash
In this situation, I was expecting either dark ruler into dark hole + harpies, or evenly matched into Imperm, followed by REF into Dragoon.

I clicked on this expecting a master duel match between two people with themed decks. Boy was this video 100 times better than that. 10/10 would watch this again over a theme duel.
I love the fact that this only worked because Pot of Desires banished 10.
It really is a -9 effect
I mean ... Not in TrapTrix tbh
I completely forgot about that. I was like "wait a minute does this actually kill I think he's a bit short"
But yea I completely forgot that pot desires made him effectively lose 12 cards from deck which takes way within kill range.
Nice touch tbh
@@flameking2178 Yeah I was doing the math in my head and was about to comment "wait, he can only get 23 cards with this before taking 7k damage" and then I remembered the Pot of Desires.
No one gonna talk about how good weevils "during the draw phase" line? That goes hard.
That Joey JP chant was fucking awesome! You sound almost exactly like a Super Robot pilot's VA with that IKUZE, specifically
I HATE HOW ACURATE THIS IS. I DO NOT WEAR A AHEGAO SHIRT WHILE DUELING WITH TRAPTRIX THOUGH. ONLY WHEN I AM OM MASTER DUEL THEN NOBODY CAN SEE ME.

Except most of red eyes support is pretty garbage
@@Honest_Mids_Masher You can combine it pretty well with dragonlink and kashtira.
@@nickmaster3886 That's about the best application you can make of it unfortunately
I lost track of Yu-Gi-Oh after GX, and every time I look at modern Yu-Gi-Oh it makes me want the sick with its complexity. This is really good. I wonder if I watch all the anime I'd be sufficiently caught up.

By the way, the moving pattern in Weevils coat is also a Monogatari reference
Showing that I've never run Nibiru before: this video is how I learned it can only activate during the Main Phase.
Woah the voice acting is really good, made me laugh way too many times even if I don't understand the game at all
The fact you actually showed Joe during the Maxx C bit is top shelf.
Honestly, ngl... Joeys speech about just try and enjoy the game genuinely makes me want to pick up master duel.. How screwed am i?
As long as you go in with an open mind and are willing to learn I think you can have a good time
Basically there's a mini event going on rn where everyone is given a code to give to new/returning players so both the code giver and user receives a swordsoul deck
swordsoul is a deck that is extremely easy for newcomers while also being good enough to get you to max rank if you combine them with Tenyi's which you'd have literally no trouble getting so if you're gonna start I'd think it's best to do it before the event ends.
Take you’re time, stick to solo and save those gems up
(you can easily rack up 10 to 20k in solo alone)
then splash out for a competitive deck that’s fun to play like Branded or Rescue-Ace.
I tried deckbuilding but the UI is super unhelpful on my phone. I just quit because i didnt want to wiki every single card.
This was amazing. Never seen your channel before but this first impression was S++
The junk warrior fanbase is not gonna appreciate that insult 😂
@@axillaryclinical it's a synchro structure decks we know better 😭
Literal junk deck.
It’s literally the synchro starter deck, 43 of singles and I have a hard time remembering 10 of them for the life of me.
Is it really that bad?
It is like that for a lot of starter/structure decks. There is a reason why most people recommend to buy three.
How did this abridged show escape my notice? Truly a masterpiece. Perfect in every way.
Is really “abridged” when at 19 min it is basically the length of your average TV show?
@@jamesfirecat6652 Abridged: a step up from dubbed because the content is changed.
@@jamesfirecat6652in the original show this was a 2 parter.

I mean inside of your heart and ask, Is Waifu is not really part of SRW?
Heck, both a in a comic and some replaiy, I seen smaler xyzs rank up into a lazy waifu to man the mecha with extra ammo
As an old, vanilla player I can say this video is beautifully written and one of the best fanmade Yu-Gi-Oh! content out there (apart from the abridged series of course).
memes aside, the message about enjoying the game was actually really strong, and something I feel a big chunk of the community needed
also joey using d.d. crow was hype as fuck
amazing job
Yeah I love this game despite its flaws. Got back into it thanks to MD releasing and it was fine. The game isn't different now, its just more intense.
I love D.D. Crow. Peak card design lol
16:55 I think Joey accidentally opened the door of darkness for Weevil here...
Weevil has Skill issue
When Joey played too good, he mindcrushed the poor lad
Joey accidentally left Weevil brain dead standing in a park. Imagine losing a Duel so traumatic that it left you brain dead.
The whole joke with the Traptrix archetype, is that they are ravenous bugs/plants, that lure victims to their death by cosplaying as anime girls.
It took me way to long to realize that that was the idea behind their design
@@Emily12471 yeah you should look at the card artwork look behind the questionably aged anime girl. There's usually a carnivorous plant or a giant bug hidden. That's also why their effects revolve around trap holes. They lure their victims into a trap hole and eat them.
Either that or murderous lolis that lure victims in for their ravenous familiar.
@@nightshroud9671 A lot of the anime girls are actually a part of the plant or bug. Its pretty subtle, best example is Atypus, if you look closely you'll notice, she is part of the spider, and the spider is mimicking someone who is trapped and distressed. I don't think that detail is too important, though. I think its a really fun archetype, because traptrix artwork is very deceptive, even a lot of yugioh players don't realize.
@@dizz6340 Most of the Traptrix monsters look like they're playing their victim like a fool and enjoying every minute of it. Sera seems to be an outlier for me, but I think that's because her tactic to lure victims in is to appear naive and harmless.
this is officially my head canon for this dual in the original series so good

I'm a few minutes in and I love how creative this is. You didn't stop at just the cards being different you leaned into the theme of it all and everything. Mad respect.
