I bougth this in a set. 12 bucks only for all the tools and the tester. Totally worth every cent. Edit: And without the tester it was not much cheaper. So do not save to much money, guys. There are minimum system requirements - always. ;)

@@HeartOfGermany Not using a tester is insanity. But then, not using a factory crimped cable for such a short run is already pretty crazy. Protip: if you don't do this for a living but still want to crimp your own runs, get the EZ Crimp style crimper and RJ45 connectors for a few bucks more. The four pairs of wires push through the end of the RJ45 connector so you can be CERTAIN you have the correct order before you crimp. Although, it might not have helped in this instance since he had it upside down... The key is just to consistently orient the RJ45.

    • @Thundarr665

@@semosesam the funniest part to me is I have that same Klein tools crimper he does, and i always save myself by loading the connector into and checking my orientation. That one makes it easier than the cheaper crimpers too.

@@semosesam Well, this El-Cheapo solution worked fine for me. Never got it wrong. Only had problems with ultraslim cable - these do not want to get crimped. I used a normal piece of cable and soldered it together - no other way possible without a very very fancy plug.

I remember once the screw on our new $700 lawn mower hand stripped it's threads. These screws held the handle in place. I was ticked. I said, "Honey you don't know what a pain this is. I'm going to have to disassemble the deck, take off the block after I drain the oil, and then line up and and drill out and retap the block. That's a good 4 hour job if I do it right. And being an engineer I wanted it done right.
    She said, "Can I try?"
    I was "Sure"
Three minutes later she came back and said "Fixed" She had duck taped the bolt the handle to keep it from popping out. It held for over 6 years.

I have crimped a lot of lines in my past and the best thing that I've ever done for myself is to use a dusting tool afterwards that tells you the line polarity. That measures the lines and tells you which lines are connected to what. So it's very smart. I highly recommend that you guys have that lease for your business and if you're doing anything at home. They're not expensive so you don't have to go get a real expensive module but you always have and you always use it in the future. If a network cable is in question, you can always hook it up to the tester and see if it really is good or not. Good suggestions.

Good tip for untwisting the end of the cable is to use the stripped jacket to break them apart from there you can put them in order and it shouldn’t take a lot of force but you can just move your hand up and down enough to straighten the cable then just cut them to size push them in the connector and crimp it’s not too hard honestly the hardest part for me is putting the cable in the rj-45 because I have shakey hands

In our school, we were taught to crimp ethernet cables without load bars and I didn't even know what a load bar is before you mentioned it. I searched what a load bar is and I wished that my teacher taught us what a load bar is because it would take me a good 2 - 3 minutes just making sure that I cut the wires straight so that the end of the wires are really hitting the end of the rj45 and keeping the wires from moving.

There are actually 2 pinouts for RJ 45 connectors: T-568A and T-568B, where one is with the brown side on the left and the other with the orange on the left. I've seen that old PC to PC wiring manuals suggest pinout A on one end and B on the other. Idk why... But with modern PC's it doesn't matter cuz it can apparently detect different pinouts and work regardless. But for camera or other IoT installations I guess, it does matter since PoE and bad firmware or proprietary software etc.

The variance in CPU heat is one of the reasons why I believe that thermal paste has to be tested with lab heaters/hotplates instead.
That allows for constant and specific heat loads.

RJ-45 cable testers are essential when making your own cables. It takes just a few extra seconds to plug in the tester and confirm its good. The tester would have indicated one side was backwards by saying it was a crossover cable.

Never terminated any Ethernet cable myself but I did turn an old cable into a speaker wire once when I ran a little short. Just cut the ends off, twisted the ends of the colored wires together as my positive wire, and all the striped wires together as my negative wire. Probably wasn't the highest quality audio but it did work LOL

Cat7 connectors are significantly tougher to work with them sent previous revision sure to the metal shielding required for insulation. Also I find it much easier to run at least one side to s wall plate and patch from there, that way you're only doing punch downs on the keystone Jack. You can also use keystone punch downs if you presumably are using a patch bay as well. I suppose in the case of mounting a camera you're going directly from a powered switch or dvr to the back of a camera which is worst case scenario for crimps!

Linus, Blackbox do a CAT5 connector called something like EZ Plug. the 8 wires protrude through the front of the plug so you can check they're in the right order before crimping. it also ensures that all wires are the correct length. they also do an accompanying crimp tool that trims the ends. This helps minimise the number of gash ends.

Use Pliers. Grip the sheathing with them. Then straighten the wires. While continuing to hold the wire using pliers as you’ll find they help keep the order with little effort.

As others have said, cable testers are a must, but I'll go one further and this will cost you, but it saves a lot of hassle: get a cable tester that will certify gig or better speed (I got a gig one years ago, ran $200 or so, but worth it). The reason for the recommendation is that it is very easy to turn what you think would be a gig or better speed capable cable into a 100mb one (granted this was using standard connectors, not the EZ ones). As to using the EZ connectors the one thing to note is you will use a bit more wire length. 1/4th inch is the general rule to have open, though I have found if you want to get to the wires themselves, even if you have a crimper/cutter tool, a good pair of 1/2in wide scissors (length I think was six inches, heavy things) with those blades being all metal (really old scissor design) will help get that cable sheath off (and cut the little wires too, if needed). Just be sure to be careful when cutting, go slow. I was doing this with solid CAT 6 cable which had the plastic core separator. Those scissors were also good for cutting the separator out once the inner wire ends were flattened out of the way. After that, it was just a matter of getting things straightened, in order, and pushed all the way to the end of the connector. Still took a while per cable, but the home network has run with this for a little over three years now and the cables are going strong. No issues yet. The ISP, though, that's another story.

Had the same problem awhile back, I tried to get a Ethernet cable hanging in
a living space of a basement thru its ceiling and pull the long cable through
the only door out, then throw it all over a duct for straight ceiling cabling,
then stand on a chair and carefully snake the long cable in a hole of a ceiling corner,
sandwiched between the duct, a space smaller then my hand,
and there was a little bump in the way and i had to counteract the weight of the cable somehow and it took like 15 minutes to get it finally to what was my room at the time.
Then I spent like an hour trying to crimp and get the tiny ass cables in the cat5 shelling,
and it never worked through the dozen attempts.
I probably just put the cables in backward every time and didn't notice. xD

I got a bunch of CAT6 connectors from Amazon, and the wire size for the cable (Amazon Basics CAT6 cable) I had compared to the connector's wire insert size was too small. Every time I crimped it, the wires would slip sideways and the contact pins would slip passed the cable instead of piercing the insulation. So frustrating and a waste of connectors. All I wanted to do was make some one foot patch cables from my router to my distribution wall socket for the house.

Reminds me of something that happened back in the day when 10BASE2 was still big. The company I worked for got a contract to wire up a medium sized office. A fun thing was that I built them a server running Microsoft OS/2. No that's not a typo. After MS and IBM had a fallout about the future of OS/2 they retained the right to a version of OS/2 that was the primary Outlook server platform at that time. But enough of that and back to wiring up that office.
The company I worked for was really small and I was the new guy. This being the first time I pulled network cable I took a backseat and listened to my boss who was an electrical engineer with many years of experience. Then I went through the instructions for the striping and crimping tools as well as looking over the connectors. We walked the site and drew up wiring maps, discussed placement of network outlets and then it was time to get started pulling cable. Being that it was a reasonably modern office pulling the cables wasn't a problem, but then we started terminating them.
After a couple of days we had everything installed and was for some reason I can't remember sitting around a table terminating drop cables when my boss suddenly stopped me and asked what I just did. I didn't get what he was asking about and he tole me to slowly terminate another cable. So I stripped it, put the center pin over the lead and crimped it.
"There" ha said "What did you do there?"
"I crimped the pin. What about it?"
"Why'd you do that? These networks work with frequencies in the megahertz range. That's radio wave frequencies, you don't have to crimp that pin."
"Yes, yes you do. Are you telling me you didn't crimp any of the cables you've been making sitting here?" I asked.
    "No of course not."
"Please tell me you crimped the center in the jacks?"
    "Nope" He answered.
    "Houston, we have a problem..."
As we hadn't kept record of who terminated what jack we ended up taking a day to re-do every single jack in the office.
What I took away from this was never to assume that people know what they are doing just because they are educated and should know. After that every time I've done something similar I've insisted on going through the basics with anyone I haven't worked with before. An if it was something I hadn't worked on before or if it was a long time since I did it then I took the time to read up on the correct procedure.

A cheap cable tester will save you a lot of time in the long run when trying to troubleshoot, for both Rj45 terminated cables and rj45 keystones. i've had to run several kilometres of cabling on several jobs terminating in a patch panel and directly in to rj45 connectors and it;s so much easier to test as i patch than testing at the end and having to pull out of a patch panel and re terminate. the worst part is when the issue is a tiny break somewhere in the middle. had this happen on 65M run of cat6 for an Ip Camera than spanned three floors of a building, cable had got nicked by a metal shaving - i had gone trough at least10 Rj45 connectors and i didn't have a tester with me -after wasting an hour went back to my office and got my tester and cut the cable at roughly the half way point and used the tester then to locate which half the fault was in, luckily it was in the last 30M on the ground floor which was an easy run as opposed to the other 30m which snaked through the rest of the building, up to the third floor then used a coupler to join them, took me 10 mins to rerun the last 30m as opposed to 2 hours it took to run the full 65
