I have to remember that the Ariya compensates the lack of space in the center console with the second glove box which many reviewer forget to realize.
Also, the steering wheel, mirrors, seat and sliding center console does memorize their position in the Evolve trim, is stated in the manual, and you can also have additional profiles in the infotainment and up to 4 key fobs with a setting saved inside it for each driver.
Also you can configure the resistance of the HVAC haptic buttons to requiere more or less pressure with a "secret" button combination described in the manual.
The infotainment curiously can play video files.

To me Nissan nailed what they set out to do: create a car where the focus is on what they believe will matter most in years of ownership: comfort, sense of luxury and space - and being good enough in all areas that you dont get FOMO. People tend to forget that a cars quality is not about specs : we all have tried cars where the specs are better on paper but in real life they had no soul, they were annoying, etc. What truly matters is - do you like it, do you want to drive it, do you feel happy with it. I know alot of tesla and mach-, kia ev6 and ioniq 5 owners that are happy about some things on their cars but seriously unhappy where it matters: ride comfort, slow “fast” charging, small space for passengers, super firm uncomfortable ride, inability to drive straight without constantly correcting (kia) etc. So for those reading this far try to think about what YOU have enjoyed in past cars you owned. Was it speed? Comfort? Space? Styling?

I find the statement that rear-wheel drive electric vehicles are generally better than front-wheel drive electric vehicles very bold. For example, the explanations do not mention that the front-wheel drive pulls the car, while the rear-wheel drive pushes the vehicle. An electric car with front-wheel drive can also have great advantages in snow. Front-wheel drive can also offer great advantages in terms of recuperation. Rear-wheel drive (for good drivers) can be an advantage in slippery conditions and level roads. In mountainous countries with snowy winters, I would prefer front-wheel drive even with an electric car.

I find that alot of car reviewers are very fixed on RWD being the only way to go, probably because they put too much weight on driving dynamics and wheel spin. Nissan/Renault have some very legitimate reasons for going for FWD.

According to Nissan/Renault, FWD is more optimal for regenerative breaking and results in substantial weight savings vs RWD because of less cables and cooling. In the case of atleast the Megane E-tech it also means a possibility of a very deep boot space.

Totally agree that the mid trim Ariya MSRP is cheaper than most other comparable EV's. I did my own research when placing a reservation and pre-order for an Evolve+ trim (~ $49k US) with extended-range 87kWh battery, power moonroof and shade, power and heated leatherette seat, Intelligent Around View Monitor and Rear View Mirror, HUD, ... Any other similar EV would have cost more or not available, and costs even more now with recent price increases.
Other features are opinionated - I did test drives on similar 2WD models (Engage+, EV6 Wind, Mach-E Premium, bZ4X XLE) and think they all have similar performance without quick acceleration, but the Ariya seems to be more quiet and has better interior materials and built. Ariya peak charging is less but stable curve helps for total 10-90 charging time.
With the current tax law changes in the US, the Ariya doesn't qualify for the $7500 incentive until it's built with certain % of battery materials and components in/from the US/NA.

Thanks a lot Bjorn for your honest review. I have a reservation for a Ariya 87kwh. I have been waiting for a long time for a real world test on the highway .
I have been very disappointed by the high energy consumption of the ariya on highway..
I decided to do another reservation for TmY SR. I "potentially" lose a few Km on highway. But since the battery of the TmY SR is a LFP battery it can be charged more often to 100x cent whereas the Ariya 87kwh seems it has a 10 x cent buffer and the charges should be limited to 70 x cent because of the 10 x cent buffer. The result is that it will actually end up doing less km in highway than TmY SR charged to 100..
Or maybe i arrived to this conclusion to make me believe that TmY is the right choice... Thanks a Million!!!

Hi Bjorn, I have a question about the Ariya and thought you’d be the perfect person to ask since you have taken it on long trips in all kinds of terrain and tough weather conditions. Is the front part of the car, particularly the kumiko patterned grill and other plastic parts that have sensors inside, more susceptible to road debris damage such as nicks chips or cracks? I just got my brand new Ariya ❤❤❤ deep ocean blue evolve+ loving it, and am trying to find out if the front could get damaged if unlucky and what can be done (not too expensively) to protect it. Thank you! Sorry I know this question is not related to this video.

  • @tallandhairy

If you want efficiency fwd not rwd is the way to go. Under braking weight shifts forward, more braking effect comes from the front of the car. Everyone seems to forget that under everything apart from perhaps the most gentle regen settings that the car automatically blends in friction from the undriven wheels (otherwise Evs would have horrible handling characteristics when lifting off the accelerator with lots of regen). So if you want good efficiency you want the regen going on at the front of the car. In theory 4wd should be perfect, but in reality the additional mechanical drag of 4wd under normal driving is greater than the extra efficiency under braking that they can provide (which along with the additional weight of the motors is why 4wd versions of EVs all have significantly less range than their 2wd counterparts). I also don't think the Nissan drive train is as efficient as the ones in the Korean cars. I'm 90% certain that's why Nissan chose fwd, if they went rwd their cars would have significantly less range than the Teslas and EV6 and Ioniq 5 etc which get away with being rwd by being more efficient in the first place.

Some models before the Pro Pilot could also drive on the highway but they didn´t beep at you to take your hands on the steering wheel. It´s just the safety requirements from the governments. Because now autonomous driving is more widespread. That is why there are levels.
Ride quality. Are there also bigger wheels on the 87 kwh I guess? But yeah the noise will be higher. I´m not sure if the Ariya has the new soundproofing they showed. Ariya is late yes (I won´t start with the last 20 years...) but really the Germans are late in the whole EV business.

I tested the Ariya 87 before ordering an EV6 for my wife, but there were several things I strongly disliked in that car so we dismissed all Nissans for the future, we have a Leaf today so we know that one. One is the very limited steering wheel adjustment range which is better than the Leaf but still very poor, the other is that the car was sort of insecure in holding speed, so it had a very uncomfortable and uneven speed at 70 km/h and below when the speed holding was activated. The third thing was the speed limit sign reading and remembering the last read sign. I was driving around in a shopping mall area where there are speed limits of 30, 40, 50 and 60 km/h, and where the dealer is, it is also 30, but when I started the car it showed 70. Then while driving in that area some times it managed to read right, but most of the times not. I stopped at a Biltema parking lot to check the interior and the parking assistance, but first I turned off the car, walked around and so on, but when I started it showed 70 while it should have shown 5 km/h (walking speed limit). OK, I though I'll make a new test in the same area, but once again, same results. Even the ID.3 behaved better than that, which also has a lot of erroneous readings, but not like this... So I returned the car after 10 minutes and gave back the keys. The speed limit reading works perfectly well in that area in our Leaf, so what did Nissan do in the Ariya? There were other dislikes also, but these three things made me NOT recommending the car to my wife. She would hate it. It's a huge car with a huge battery but pretty mediocre range also, compared to the i4 e40 RWD and the Kia EV6 RWD.
