The newgen faces in FM23 are... not great. So I've been updated mine in my Almeria DOF save by generating new ones using AI and midjourney. Today's video tutorial shows you how I've been doing this and how to add them to your game.

Remove the background from an image here: remove.bg/
1. Ensure you can see Player IDs in game preferences
2. Generate the player face on midjourney. My prompt:
"85mm DSLR colour photography of a very detailed headshot fitting all of head and hair in frame. [age] year old [nationality] soccer player, with [hair colour] hair and [facial hair or other features] with a small smile, grey background"
3. Remove background of the player face using Remove.bg
4. Save as a PNG as the Player ID (e.g. 200232323) in Football Manager 2023 - Graphics Folder - Faces
5. Update config file / use FMXML to update config file
6. Clear cache in game and reload skin in preferences

STEP-BY-STEP GUIDE:
1. Ensure you can see Player IDs in game preferences
2. Generate the player face on midjourney. My prompt:

Also - I've been putting all of the player faces that I have generated on my patreon if you want to use any of them yourselves
God I wish someone would make a newgan manager facepack full of midjourney faces
While this doesn't seem difficult, and is really cool, I can't see myself really using this in my own saves, mostly because doing this for all the players would likely take a long long time
Hopefully FM gets a better way of generating inside the game...
This was never a method to replace a facepack, but a way to get way better faces, bespoke to how the players actually look but lifelike.
I don’t want to replace every single newgen in my save with random people.

Yeah I think if I did this I'd never sell the players as I wouldn't want to do the process too often but it definitely looks much better and can understand why someone doing TH-cam videos or streaming might take the time to do it as, like I said, it does look a lot better
It took me half an hour to do 10 faces, these are the super high grade youth players I’d build my team around going forward. Thanks for doing this Clayts. Just wish I could get ride of the shoulders on the images
Just want to say, thanks Clayts. This is a brill video and I’ve now got my top 4 youth players with real faces. I thought it would be super hard to do, but it’s so easy, and the free sites are so good.

Hot take, I kind of like terrible faces because I can quickly see who is a newgen 😂 Ideally they could use some other visual to signal that and actually make proper faces.
Yeah I know what you mean. I don’t even really hate the newgen faces and certainly couldn’t get behind doing this for every save. But it’s a nice option.
There are certain versions of the Newgan that let you figure out which players are newgens. For instance, the SAGKRZealand Facepack allows you to choose a facepack in which you can choose your newgens to e wearing a blue Hummel shirt

Maybe FM will incorporate something like this in the future. If it'd then be able to take the information from the player such as age etc we may get dynamically changing portraits as the players age.

Spent last night watching this and looking at my newgens and thinking, they need some tlc. Followed your steps and it's awesome, did take a little while but worth it as for the midjourney creation and bringing them to life!!
Love the idea, but I wish there was a way to apply this to every newgen players in my save 😂
Is there a reason I’m not getting the config file? It comes up as the face in file but I don’t have the face in game. I’ve followed every step
The in game regens are quite ugly to look at with unibrows and stupid squares as beards so this is useful. Also you kind of remind me of James Allcott the way you talk and look. You're like if he ditched the 90s nice guy in the boy band look for a more dark indie solo artist in the late 2000s.

I'm a year late, but thanks a million! This really helped me get my RC Celta youth academy players some faces and it really improves the imersion of the game.

thaught i was the only one having this problem. i assumed it was because i didnt put the r- that is on all my regens ID but that didnt seem to fix the problem

I had the same problem and worked out how to fix it. Open the 'config' file that the FM XML created.
If given a choice choose to open it in Notepad.
Scroll down and you will see some long numbers, they're the player IDs. Each line on the config should have the player ID listed twice but, if you're having the same issue as I did, the righthand side of the line says "0" instead of the real player ID.
Just copy and paste the player ID from the left and on the right where it says "0" replace it with the player ID
Once this is done save the file and close notepad. Clear cache in game and refresh skin.
Done. This works.
Just open the config and ensure each line repeats the player ID twice, instead of once and then 0.
Please keep in mind your player ID probably starts "r-" followed by a number.
I am copying and pasting this and sending to people who have struggled.
FmXML doesn't work for me neither. But if you edit the config file yourself, it works. You just have to paste the id twice for each player:
(in this line it might be different if you didn't use FMXML)

Clayts, Quick question. I've been playing around alot and had an idea to start creating faces for FM when women football drops in 25. but all faces midjourney generates of women are....well too attractive. did you come up with any prompts to...delude the results a bit to make them more...rough? or average looking?
Could you use the NewGAN mod thingy for a new save like you can use the normal sortoitousi cutout mega facepack and use this for the newgens?

The thing is that if you want your squad to be realistic you need to update their faces every season or so otherwise you will have a 30 year old player looking like 17
@clayts is there a way on mid journey to get the head shot without the shoulders and have a slightly larger image… also do you put in the specific name of the beard and hair cut type thanks

Hey @Clayts great video but do have a question. I play my fm on the Console version linked to my Xbox and for some reason my Preferences screen doesn't have any of the same options you have, and no tickbox whatsoever regarding 'showing player ID's.' Do you know why this may be and if there's a way round it?

I think there are much cheaper and easier ways to do it, such as newGAN manager which does it for all regens at once
But they look…. Not good.

@@Clayts Using view from the touchline free face pack is faster and looks almost as good. Not as good granted but free, cheaper and using newGAN can apply them to all newgens makes it more worth it IMO. But, your method quality pictures are a little better so its personal preference
@@Clayts i understand its preference but to say they look "not good" is a bit of a stretch, me personally i think these look clearly ai made and not entirely realistic on top of being an extremly tedious process, marked improvement over the base faces for sure
@@Clayts This is objectively wrong. I find that the faces are all too handsome, because they cut all non-symmetric generated faces. Your method is OK if you only want to do a couple of faces, but is not good for doing all the newgens.

hi, in fm24 if i put a picture with a real player id it works but if i put an regen id, didn't work , any help?
There is no reason for fm 24 to not have much better newgen faces - I’ll be super disappointed if it’s still the same shit

Not sure why but config file just wont show up in my Custom Faces File. But its there in my faces file that i already have is there a way to generate this file?
How did you get it to make the images of Eidur Gudjonsen etc?
e.g. I'm sending a picture then making the request afterwards like it looks as though you have, but I'm getting completely unrelated pictures back

I can generate and change players fine, but when trying to change my manager face its appearing as blank, ive tried chaging the sizes of the image but with no luck, have you managed to change yours?
Yeah - are you changing your manager face through preferences > change profile picture?
Didnt know the option was there thank you. I was using my ID and following the normal steps for a player. Ive subscribed as the lowest member on MidJourney, is there a limit per month do you know?

Hey Clayts, I don't have a midjourney subscription and it states you can't DM the bot with a imagine prompt in the free trial version, unless I'm doing something wrong...v

you need to add "r-" to them in the config file. Newgen's individual IDs got changed this year to begin with r-

How hard is it to edit the config file with notepad if you can't use FMXML editor?
Pretty straightforward, just copy one of the other lines and then adjust the ID numbers
once you have the pictures is there any way to age them up as the players get older?
I wonder if you could use prompts to adjust the age of a photo in midjourney - I’ll try it

2 things about why I didn't do this after all (I don't mean to be rude or negative, just my opinion). I don't like the fact that every generated AI face has a different shirt, and second that these nice faces don't actually show up in the 3D match highlights...
You can add a line to the prompt about the shirt - and what do you mean they don’t show up in 3D highlights 😂 how big is your monitor? Cinema size? How are you seeing their faces? I’ve lost my mind at this
@@Clayts I tried to add some lines to the prompt but it didn't work for me...Maybe I did something wrong! I can't see their faces on 3D but I can see their haircuts for example...But again, my way of playing the game...
Try just “in a red kit” and it works great for me. Ah yeah, I see what you mean. That’s not an issue for me because I create the faces based on their in game newgen face anyway.
A lot of faffing around to do just one face though!
Yeah - that’s sort of the point though. Actually turning them into real people, I’m not a fan of just sticking a newgen face pack on suddenly having a bunch of random people suddenly.
But yeah, definitely not a quick fix.
Sorry dude, But Why not just use de Zealand New gan face pack? It does this on mass and in much less time
