There is a big part of Wonderkid development on Football Manager that I have ignored for years. I didn’t just ignore this helpful tidbit for videos, I wasn’t using it myself for along time. I finally shifted on my save with Floridsdorfer to doing the right thing for my hot prospects and it has started paying dividends. So, naturally, I found a way to amplify this helpful development trick to make it viable on a large scale.
For years I missed the old version of mentoring. It was more intuitive to me and made sense to pair your wonderkids one-on-one with a senior member of the team to have them look after them. Mentoring is just as useful though, it has just become more perilous to pursue, just like transfers and everything else in recent versions of Football Manager. It’s a good thing I finally figured it out!

Can I ratio you Zealand?
My "200 IQ play" was just searching Spanish 15-19 (I'm in Spain) with "Model Citizen" or "Model Professional" (Resolute/Perfectionist/Professional to a lesser extent) personality and scouting every single one for 1 week. Took most of the summer but every 4+ potential player was signed (I know stars are irrelevant). My youth team have won back to back Spanish youth titles and now the majority of the team are takin on the good personalities and their development is FAR better.

@@boomdibam9823 They are irrelevant for 15-16 olds, this was pointed out at the previous release where they said the scouts will be less precise until a player is around 18 (to try and keep a degree of reality into the scouting). Also, they are nothing more than a guidline because I've had a RW who's now 21 that's always had 5* potential despite having ~140PA, when 4 players in my squad have >180CA and they're 4.5* and the rest of my starting XI are >160CA which is 3 and 4 stars. This is with the best best staff in Spain (by a long distance) and a team that has won 3 back-to-back titles.
This year its a lot less nailed on, by design, which is a good thing as the game becomes more realistic.
real life equivalent of things like Liverpool bringing back Jay Spearing to play for the U23s at 33 years old, so he can mentor the yoofs. Another way FM is like real life!!
Remember in the older FM's where you could get an individual player to mentor another one? I think that'll be handy again.

I'm proud of Zealand for pointing at the correct side multiple times today
I really needed this video! I have a 5 star potential LB come through my academy (he's 2 star at the moment). He's now 17, last season as my main LB got a long term injury I promoted him to the 1st team as a back up to my remaining LB. He got sent off 4 times in the 6 matches he started! So this season I sent him on loan and he's been permanently unhappy, first I got a message from the loan manager that he was unhappy as he wasn't getting the playing time agreed on (OK he was coming on a as a sub when he was promised regular starter) so I talked to the manager and he started. Then he was unhappy he was being played as a wing back rather than a LB so again I talked to the other manager and it's been sorted. Now he's unhappy as he thinks he's better than the other players at the club he's on loan at. On the plus side he seems to have only been sent off once while on loan.
He was in a mentoring group with one of my resolute players and didn't seem to get any benefits from it so maybe I need to buy some model citizens (hadn't thought about that) to help my youngsters and in particular this very angry 17 year old LB. All this drama is made even worse by how happy I was to have him, as LB is always my problem area to find players for.
Your kid makes Balotelli look like a saint. Btw, did the mentoring work?
The only problem I had testing this: When I only had 2 goalkeepers, that group is often suggested to be disbanded in staff meetings.
if its possible, you could loan in a free 3rd choice young keeper, or a non-contract guy just to keep the group going
You need min of 3 per group. I just throw GKs in with outfielders. I'd love do understand what the downside to this might be. Maybe they get an influence boost by being in the same positing/training unit? Or maybe it's just recommended because the traits will be more applicable.
As above, you need minimum 3 players per group. I normally promote a keeper from my youth teams, then make them available for 90 mins for the U18's/21's.

Zealand, a tip. Alot (most) of the faces in your facepack have a little bright green spot at the top (Biver included). Maybe you already know this,, but you can find the .png, open it in Paint 3D, erase that little spot, touch up the hair a bit if necessary, save it, reload skin. I do that almost all my faces that have that problem. Biver deserves a clean face!
biver’s development will be interesting to watch. no matter how technical a player is i’ve never been able to get any development or production out of them when they have such low composure, concentration, and other mentals like that.

You can repeat the same trick at the different age levels (they'll have hierarchies too). You can also move a player up to whichever group you want them to train with while making them available for the lower group. Just be careful of your coaching workloads.

Keep in mind that that the mentor has higher or atleast equal determination as the mentees or else a young player's determination will go down if he is being mentored by a player who has low determination
This is also an effective way of moulding not just players that could play for your team but players who you could sell. In my saves I always give chance to majority of the intake players and some of them are never good enough to play for my team but by a bit of moulding I can make them good enough to be sold for 15+ mil pounds. That way you can keep on earning money for your club to spend somewhere else

In my current save I have totally brought in 35+yo players just to be mentors to my squad of wonderkids. I didn't know about traits transferring though, I'm gonna use that!

Zealand, I heard you say on a podcast you struggle to get people to subscribe: I think that if 1. You announce future videos currently in production (that are obviously interesting) and 2. If you make a page where fans can request videos on specific content, this could help.

Also, the inconsistency in content doesn’t help much either. A reason I didn’t subscribe and won’t. Cuz I just don’t care about most of the videos.
I can honestly say that having a bad personality or media attitude wouldn’t put me off signing someone like that!

So what do you do when your whole team is Balanced/Media friendly and you have limited resources like at a Sky Bet League Two club?
Question for you Z, if you have a young player in you U19s who has a bad personality with amazing, is it worth calling him up into the main squad just for the mentoring and making him available for the U19s?
i have tried this and it didnt change unambitious at all for a season in a group with resolute mentor. if others have had success, please share but it didnt work for me. the only time i have gotten a player to change was a midfielder who was fickle but then became resolute while in the first team mentors. but that took seasons.

Well that made me 😁 hehehe I always again always check the personality...it's definitely one of the most important attributes even if the player does not have a lot high 12s, 15s and 20s the personality makes a difference.
Zealand calling 25 year-old players "old" just about made me feel ancient as I'm approaching 30.

I swear by this approach. I spend my first 2 seasons on any save purging older players with weak personalities. And refusing (except on very rare occasions) to sign older players _without_ good personalities. It typically kicks off a chain reaction within the club.
*Random thought:* What if you flood your under-age teams with wise old men from the lower leagues? As a quick experiment, I moved my sub GK (33 y/o) down to the U23s. He went straight to the top of the Team Hierarchy, but only had _light_ influence when added to an U23 mentoring group.
Influence of older players in the U23s is bugged, it never shows anything but light. I always have 1 or 2 older players in my U23/B squad as mentors and get great results even though they are listed as only having light influence. You just have to judge it by the estimated effect from group of the younger players instead.

9:15 goddamn u hit it straight at me, my right winger scored 28 goals in the premier league and he picked up 'comes deep to receive the ball' trait in the summer, now i am working on removing it but it just won't happen and he's not scoring at all. He is absolutely rapid (19 pace) with 17 finishing and he used to run in behind between the full back and the centre back - now looks to create and is not making that sort of runs
Any idea any despite selecting to control all training every time I select your training programs for my reserves and under 23s it doesn’t save and then removes the one week I have selected for my main team? I’m using your training programs from steam workshop.

To develop wonderkid much better then you need to find a reputable player with model citizens and model professionals in it. But sometimes a perfectionist trait can sometimes increase controversy so be careful who you mentor. This video really heps a lot and thanks for that.
So why not just put all ur players into their 3 units then remove the players who get no effect? In the end u have same results right? Then u can add more groups based on which players respond n have an effect
it seems kinda unrealistic that an up anc coming barcelona prospect like gavi would even pay attention to some mentor who never even player at the top level
My best CB with an average of 7.23 rating has no “Inconsistent” nor “Consistent” in his report even though he only got 7 “Consistency hidden attribute”.

Does your coaches personality ever play any role here? I mean, your U18 coaches should probably make an impact on your young players like a mentor does. Because you don't want all your young squads in your a-team training group, right? But when training in U20/U18/Reserves, they can't be mentored by a-team players. But in reality your coaches, specialy when you are like 15-18 years old, makes a big impact on your personality development as well as your playing development.
In my youth system I got a kid with the model citizen tab. Would he be good to be a mentor in the mentor group or should he be a mentee ?
I think you just have to wait until he ages up & becomes more influential. Then he can start mentoring. If you put him in a mentoring group now, he can only get worse.
if you hand set up your youth mentoring groups and he is influential in that group, then he could become the mentor. youth team age spacing is less profound in my experience than in senior teams.

I think you need to increase the reputation of your club to get rid of release clauses in contracts generally. Big talents are always going to ask for release clauses from smaller clubs.
Maybe once a season try to offer a new contract to your wonderkids and see if you can negotiate the release clause out of it.

Can someone tell me why whenever I do mentoring, almost all my players go down in determination, granted they are increasing in other areas, but why does determination so regularly go down
new contract or complacency is usually the cause. also it may be due to the pa vs ca rebalancing that reduces one trait to increase others to get back to a ca/pa tier. that was my understanding.
also your mentor may have low determination for some reason?

i think the wonderkid hasn't arrived at the club yet. this is like the thesis to what he will do, but we dont know how long the dorfers save goes for with fm 23 release soonish.

Inconsistency doesnt mean anything, i had players who were very consistent but couldnt play above a 6,7. Also i have the best striker in the world, he just scored 60 goals for me in 44 games and guess what, he is inconsistent
Inconsistent is relative to the player.. if he’s the best striker in the world then sometimes he is only world class meaning he will play as if his attributes are slightly lower.. but since he is so good it’s still at an elite level, that’s what it means.
@@SimersFM well the player that were very consistant in my team had high stats everywhere, i'm talking 16 to 18 and still couldn't perform at a decent level, stuggeled to reach 6.7 or 6.8, while some others with lower stats performed better in those position eventhough they didnt have 'consistent' in their report. i since then don't give much importance to the consistency attribute.
