Sony PS5 HDMI 2.1 Bandwidth is Capped at 32Gbps (vs Xbox Series X 40Gbps)

  • We analysed the HDMI 2.1 output from the Sony PS5 (Playstation 5) console, and found that the maximum bandwidth it can deliver either at 4K@60Hz or 4K@120Hz is currently 32Gbps, which is lower than the 40Gbps HDMI 2.1 bandwidth on the Xbox Series X.
    Calculations: 4K@60Hz at 12-bit RGB = 32Gbps (8Gbps at 4 Lanes)
    4K@120Hz at 12-bit 4:2:2 = 32Gbps (8Gbps at 4 Lanes)
    Japanese teardown of Sony PS5, revealing HDMI 2.1 chipset from Panasonic Semiconductor Solutions/ Nuvoton Technology (MN864739):
    www.4gamer.net/games/990/G999...
    We are not sure if this Panasonic chipset is capable of 40Gbps or 48Gbps.

      I could be mistaken, but this is probably due to the bandwidth bottleneck that is discussed in this video. Resolution, color depth, refresh rate, HDR, etc.. all these factors stack and multiply the amount of information needed to be passed.. So if you are only capable of passing 32gbps, you have to pick and choose which criteria you have enabled. There's another video here on the channel that speaks about this. Probably not the TV, but the Ps5 that's limiting you.

      PlayStation has way more exclusive games than just Spider-Man and Demon's Souls.
      Plus, the PS5 controller is considered to be revolutionary, in terms of its haptic feedback and responsive triggers.
      The Xbox controller hasn't changed and still uses ancient batteries to power it.
      The online capabilities of the PS5 are exactly the same as on Xbox.
      Game-pass is, indeed, a nice feature.
      Though, it's also available on PC if you like to rent your games, which I don't.

      TBH, it is probably 10-bit with zeroed out last two least significant bits (LSBs). HDMI YCC422 packing can contain between 8 to 12bpc depending on what the encoder IP is configured to output. Many sink devices often report incorrect color depth when YCC422 is utilized because of this. This is probably why the LG TV incorrectly reports 8bpc. The PS5 uses HDR10 for games and that profile is defined for 10-bpc / 30-bpp. You can still be happy about seeing the 12-bit indication on the AVR, but it's not really 12 bit. :)

      He's basically saying the PS5 has a smaller pipe to push data through. HDMI 2.1 maxes out at 48GB, allowing for full uncompressed colour data and audio at 4k 120. Having less bandwidth means data must be either compressed or reduced to fit the 32GB for the PS5, and 40GB for the XboxSX.
      Below is a link to a full explanation of 4.4.4, so you can understand why it's always mentioned Terence. I PC Game on a C9 Oled using 4.2.2 10bit 4K@60 and it's stunning, so I doubt 99% of people will ever notice or care:

      Just Google "chroma subsampling"; PC GAMING discusses this since it's an issue with Displayport bandwidth to 4K monitors. In a lot of video it's not obvious (4:2:2 vs 4:4:4) but in some video it affects the quality in obvious ways. It can also make some things like TEXT occasionally look horrible. In general it's hard to tell the difference. But sometimes it's obviously worse to have only 4:2:2.

      32gb/s bandwith or 40gb/s or the full 48gb/s what is the difference since the video says the PS5 is doing 32gb/s bandwith but it is STILL doing 4K, HDR, 120hz so why do you need 40gb/s or 48gb/s bandwith ?

    • @SickplayaM
      @SickplayaM 3 ปีที่แล้ว +29

      @@RossMalagarie The story is more complex than that. If you have 4K 120, but also less color depth) 8bit vs 10/12 bit) and more compression (chroma subsampling 4:2:0 vs 4:2:2/4:4:4) you will lose picture Quality.
      For full picture Quality you want 4K/120HZ/12bit/4:4:4= 48Gbit/s
      So the PS5 outputting only 32Gbit/s means more compression and less color depth at 120Hz (Xbox Series X can handle 40 Gbit/s)

      @HaouasLeDocteur 3 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      @@RossMalagarie did you miss the part about it not being able to do YCbCr 4:4:4 at 120 Hz? 32Gbps means the PS5 will have to downgrade colors in order to accommodante 4K120. You need 40Gbps for 4K120 4:4:4 10 bit.

    @VINCENT You can force 120FPS at the system level, it just that it's not called "120fps" in the menu . To do it you go to Settings', navigate to the 'Save Data and Game/App Settings' option. Within 'Game Presets' you'll see all the various options, the second in the list is the ability to choose between 'Performance Mode', 'Resolution Mode' or 'Game Default'. Select 'Performance Mode' and you have 4k120 all the time. The PS5 will force that performance on games that support it, you won't have to change it in the games menu anymore
