PC Mode 4:4:4 LG CX for PS5 / Xbox Series X and why you do not need it.

  • You don't need to use the PC mode on your TV to get a good picture quality. The PS5 is not even capable of doing 4:4:4 in HDR and 120hz. But to make this clear: 4:4:4 is the best signal what you can choose! BUT the difference between 4:4:4 and 4:2:2 in games is not worth mentioning!

    What I forgot to mention in my video (shame on me) . The TV will always use 4:2:2 regardless what setting you are using on the Xbox/PS5. That is why you have to set you TV to PC Mode if you want to use 4:4:4 .

      i thought the only benefit of hdmi 2.1 (if i do not care about performance mode in games and only play at 4k/60) is that the game will run in 4k/60 RGB 10bit HDR. So even if the console renders the game at rgb, the tv will compress the data to 4.2.2 anyway on 60hz mode? Does this apply to every tv or only the CX? I am about to purchase a new tv and the hdmi 2.1 stuff just makes it harder...should i go for something with hdmi 2.1 or get a decent tv like the Sony x950h but without 2.1 features...

    Finally someone said it! I see so many people being angry over the lack of 4:4:4 @4k120hz on the ps5 without realizing that most movies are 4:2:2 or 4:2:0, and that you won't notice much difference anyway.

      You are right, I’ve been switching for some time between game console mode and PC mode and that I also notice something happening with the brightness and clarity. You lose more detail in PC mode, and you get black crush, I noticed it when playing Last of Us 2, dark areas get way more darker than the game console mode so I think that game console mode is the way to go because that is probably what the game developers had in mind and you can also see more details when you engage in game console mode for the LG CX + PS5 (with HGIG enabled. Stick with game console mode. I think you’ll get a more accurate picture with game console, as it was intended to be like.

    Interesting stuff.
    Another factor to consider (at least as pertains to the C9) is 4:4:4 in combination with 4K120hz VRR etc introduces visual artifacts on the screen. They manifest as red and blue glitching. This can be mitigated somewhat by turning off features in general settings (Live Plus for example), but it doesn’t totally eliminate them. The aberrations seemingly appear randomly.

Thanks for the clear info, this topic has been confusing to me. I’m going to leave my XSX at 60HZ, unless I’m specifically playing a game that supports 120HZ. Late to the party, but I have to disagree. For me, the jump frpm 422 to 444 is very noticeable. If you are sensitive enough to sharpness, it's inmeadiatly evident how it increases from one mode to the other. Finally. Took a German guy to address the misconceptions. Another drawback for setting ps5 in pc mode is that you have to connect your ps5 directly to TV and then sur an earc port to output audio to receiver. That way you get a lossy signal from the TV and you are better off using a hdmi 2.1 receiver directly connected to ps5

    • @sawyerc.6033
      @sawyerc.6033 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      If you have an HDMI 2.1 receiver, you should definitely be connecting your XBOX Series X and/or PS5 to that receiver. Now, if you own a receiver that is not HDMI 2.1 capable, and does not have that bandwidth, then for sure, you connect your console to the TV, and let the TV passthrough the audio to the receiver via its ARC connection. Now in the case of the latter, yes, you are going to experience "lossy" audio. You'll be able to use Dolby Digital 7.1 or DTS with an older receiver. You won't have the ability to utilize the Dolby Atmos or DTS:X audio features available for use on the latest gaming consoles, which does kind of suck. However, I've got my XBOX Series X and PS5 consoles both connected to HDMI 2.1 switches, which enables me to switch either of their signals from being sent to either my home theater system - which consists of my 65" LG C2 OLED display, connected to my Pioneer Elite VSX LX505 receiver, which is setup in a 5.1.4 Atmos configuration - or to my desktop system - which consists of my HP PC, and my 42" LG C3 OLED display, (which is used as a PC monitor most of the time) connected to my much more dated Onkyo TX NR929 receiver, which I use to power what is the most killer desktop audio system I've ever had, which is in it's entirety, that receiver and a 3.1 speaker setup. I just recently connected everything to my desktop up this way, just because I had upgraded our home theater, and I'm always looking for an excuse to mess around with some speakers, and I had the older receiver sitting around doing nothing, as well as our old 10" powered subwoofer sitting and collecting dust as well. So I just decided to hook it all up, so that whenever I do end up playing on the 42" C3, I could still have some killer sound. All that aside, I'm not going to sit here and say that there is no big difference between the two, because not having audio which would otherwise be coming at you from 6 whole other channels, well, that's a significant enough difference I believe, to call a "big" one. However, the quality of the audio coming from my smaller desktop system is still amazing, high quality audio. I can crank it WAY up, and hear things crisp and clear, and detailed, so much more than I could ever hear if I were using just the speakers on my television. And my televisions both, are LG OLEDs, one, barely a year old, and the other, is only about a month old, so both of them are Dolby Atmos capable HDMI 2.1 televisions. Even so, the audio from my older Onkyo TX NR929 receiver is still worlds better, and far more detailed than anything that either of the TVs could ever produce. So if any of you out there are worried about the quality of your audio, because you are using a more dated ARC receiver, as opposed to an eARC capable receiver, to the point that you are considering upgrading to a newer eARC capable HDMI 2.1 receiver, I would encourage you not to worry about it too too much. Unless your receiver is considerably old, it should have the ability to match the audio to the screen in terms of allowing you to experience your audio without the first bit of noticeable delay. Most will even do this automatically, but even the few that don't, still provide the ability for you to go in their settings and adjust the delay for yourselves, and you can get it pretty exact when you are using by the millisecond adjustments. Put it this way, if your receiver is ARC capable, and actually shakes hands with your tv ok, then you shouldn't have anything to worry about at all. Now, if you are interested in Dolby Atmos and DTS:X specifically, because you are actually a "home theater enthusiast", and you would like to experience object based audio/surround sound, then by all means, upgrade. It absolutely IS awesome, and one hell of an experience to be able to have in your own home when streaming content, or watching movies, tv, and playing games. But you don't NEED an Atmos/DTS:X capable receiver in order to enjoy your audio. It IS an improvement in terms of the additional channels, but the QUALITY of my audio, in regard to my desktop setup, is just as detailed and clear as the audio from my home theater system. Just figured I'd mention my experience here, on the off chance it might help someone.

    Modern TVs SHOULD be using 4:4:4 chroma out of the box for hdmi devices, ESPECIALLY if they detect a PS5 or XBX. But they still make us set the label as PC. Why? And why should correct text and uncompressed color only be for PC users? Who made up that rule in the first place? The first time I ever used 444 "PC Mode" on my PS4 slim it totally shocked me at how much a difference it made in games. There was extra sharpness and texture detail everywhere, but also a nice soft anti aliasing effect on everything as well. Colors had more pop, there was less banding, and there was less input lag. There were literally no downsides.

    Yeah i get it i don't need 4:4:4 in 4k 120hz, yet PS5 output 4:4:4 in 4k 60hz instead of 4:2:0. Why? Because it's capable of being BETTER in 4k 60hz mode and not capable in 120hz mode. You keep saying that it doesn't matter if it's 444 or 420. At the end of the day, when the technology is there to support 4:4:4 in 4k 120hz mode, what will be the output format? 4:4:4. Period.

    Hello @Amok4All , thank you for your videos already, I have my PS5 connected to a lg C1 and I agree with you in principle, I tried the PC mode and the Console mode and it is quite difficult to the eye to see a difference especially when playing 3m from the TV. However, are there any disadvantages to activating PC mode compared to console mode? If there is no inconvenience and it brings a "plus" (enable 4: 4: 4) why not do it?
    Thank you for your attention.

    • @TJ.85
      @TJ.85 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The "negative" of using it is that your TV disables almost all processing of the image and while this may seem like a good thing you lose access to things like color correction motion smoothing and a number of other picture "enhancements" provided by your TV's processing.
      Effectively there is no benefit whatsoever to using it that's discernable and there are ACTUAL very discernable negatives depending on how your TV settings are configured.
      Basically you'll get the same or better image quality by just sticking to non pc mode options and using your displays built in image processing.

    I understand what you say but personally I'm pretty sure I will spot the difference between 4:4:4 and 4:2:2 because I'm really close to my TV. But in any case there isn't many 120 fps games on the PS5, what I'm more curious is if the VRR will allow game to get closer to 90 fps while maintaining 4:4:4. If 4K 60 4:4:4 10b-HDR is 22.28Gbps then we should be able to get a bit higher than 60 to reach the 32 gbps. For me 90 fps is the sweet spot for framerate.

    48 Gbps from Series X to Sony XE70, how? Please explain. Good luck because you're going to need it.
    No, Series X|S does not send 4:2:2 automatically if bandwidth is not enough (for example 2160p/60hz/10bit through HDMI 2.0) because depending on how well your display handles it 4:2:2 can produce unwanted artifacts.

      Hi. I noticed this also that in some games the PC mode is better in terms of banding. BUT I also noticed that in HDR in The Last of Us Banding in PC Mode is worse then in game mode. I think that has also to do with the calibration of the greyscale. I will look more into this because when I did this video I was not able to see ANY difference in terms of banding between PC and game mode. BUT I calibrated since then my TV a couple of times and also there is a brandnew FW Update which can also cause a new issue or make things better. Before I got my nanocell 99 people were complaining that it didn't have 4:4:4 8k 60hz. I would always explain its not going to be necessary for 8k console content or movies. Sometimes most of these TH-camrs send misinformation and people go with it. You actually know what you're talking about. I believe Playstation will update the firmware, so the system can output the full bandwidth. I think they're waiting for VRR stability across all TVs and 8k textures/content in future games. I believe once UE5 is officially released and devs start using the tools. PS5 will be able to take advantage of those high res textures due to its ssd.

    You just took a thorn off my side.
    I was hesitating between 2 TV models Sony XH90 and XH95 because hdmi 2.0 cannot output 4K 60hz 10-bit 4: 4: 4, but only 4K 60hz 10-bit 4: 2: 2.
    I'll take the 55XH95: better HDR, better processing. I don't need to play at 4K 120 fps. Playing in 4K60 or 1080p120 is enough for me.
    A big thank you for your video, finally someone who explains well this option which we do not know if we should need it or not on the consoles.

      The LG 48 CX OLED has excellent low input lag, but it's not as low as some other 120Hz monitors, like the Dell Alienware AW3420DW. It only slightly increases at 60Hz or with VRR enabled, which is great. We measured this in 'Game' mode with the input label set to 'PC', which are the settings required to achieve the lowest input lag possible. Outside of 'Game' mode in the 'Expert (Dark Room)' Picture Mode with the input lag set to 'PC', we measured an input lag of 15.2 ms at 4k @ 120Hz.

    On my LG B9 the pc mode as auto color gamut available also has auto black level options and I think its best to us on PS5 as it lets you turn off hdr in the PS5 settings without the need to do the extra step in the tv settings changing the black levels back and forth when going from HDR to SDR

    • @GamingTech-YouTube
      @GamingTech-YouTube  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Why do you have to change the black level all the time ? Set it on auto and all good. Again the PS5 does NOT support 4:4:4 in HDR 4K anyway. So again in my pinon no need for PC Mode at all. Anyway it is interesting that you still have the option to change the color gamut. Are you in the gaming picture settings?

      @@GamingTech-TH-cam so I’ve been using game mode but on the b9, and I only have black level low and high on the black level options, there’s no auto unless you use pc mode then it becomes available.
      So before PS5, I’ve been treating SDR as being full RGB 444 on PS4 PRO, so for that you need black level high and then RGB range set to automatic on PS4 pro, then when it switches to HDR on the old PS4 pro it’s ycc422 hdr so you need limited range and black level low. So if I needed to switch black levels over on the tv, when I’m in normal game mode does not have an auto black level option on game mode just high and low, but now with pc mode it has auto black level option. I still don’t know which is best to use as I’ve tried both full range RGB hdr and limited hdr and see no difference on the PS5.
