For most people the ONLY way it works is if you use it often. Otherwise you'd be like Brian, "I saw this 10 years ago but..." Luckily, it's easy to re-learn, too!
It's funny how counterintuitive this trick is. 'You can remember these things better by adding a whole new bunch of stuff to remember'. But it really works.
@@waynerussell6401 You can use the same phenomena for long term memory though. If you associate more vivid/funny/emotional images/stories/events together, you can remember them much more easily. I remember in high school only remembering the history on the same pages as pictures in my textbooks. I remembered the pictures and could then recall information nearby. Everything else, a wash.
The way the mind reading works is: When he initially grabs the paper from her he puts some distance in between him and the paper saying "Look I can't see through it" and giving the impression that he's keeping his distance. Next he asks about her zodiac sign. She's caught off guard because it's a seemingly random question and takes a brief second to look up to the left as we often do when sifting through our memory, during this scene the camera is zoomed in on her but this is when he has the opportunity to switch the paper with another piece of paper. The reason he's using business cards is because they're all the same so it wouldn't cause immediate suspicion if the card was folded slightly different. The reason he has her write her zodiac sign on the outside and then says "So you can tell it's yours without the need to open it" that's because at this point in time the paper has already been switched, if she were to open it, then it would be blank. With some sleight of hand, he now has hers in his palm, and she believes she still has her original piece of paper. As he's saying "Without us having to see what you've written" he is mimicking the action of someone opening a piece of paper creating the illusion that he's simply using body language to convey his message, but it's at the moment in time that he is actually reading her piece of paper that's been in his hand. Just like earlier this part is hard to analyze because the camera zooms in on her. How does he get it back into her hand for the reveal? Something happened in the cut at 12:03. He must have switched it during that cut. Probably did some more handling of the paper and swapped it back. If you look at the jump cut between 12:03 and 12:05, the pen on the table is moved so anything could have happened during this time. Then with a bit more flare and theatrics he finishes the trick off. It's all clever and I'm sure anyone would be easily deceived in person because he's a professional, it's also hard to analyze the moment things happen on here because they used some well timed camera zooms to keep those moments out of the video.

On a side note as I'm analyzing this again, I wouldn't doubt if the guy took the position of the sun into account and purposely had them sit on that side of the table so it's harder for them to see. I know that part sounds a bit out there, but to sell a trick like this you really want to utilize any advantage you can.
I don't think there is a second card. He's the one that folds the card and there is stuff written on it that forces her to write the name in the right bottom corner. And since he folded it he knows (if he holds open side facing him eg the fold is away from him and to the left) the name is at the bottom 'page' and just has a peak at 11:46 and because he's been already been folding the paper multiple times beforehand and she's busy thinking of her star sign, nobody notices. I guess an easy way to peak is (as the name is written in right bottom corner) you make a thumb break in the bottom fold as you pretend to straighten the whole pack (so you just have 3 corners between your index finger and thumb, while your thumb opens up the 4th (which will have the name).
There is also a method called "Journey Method" where you can put items in a particular place known to you for example : sand in your bedroom, oil in your kitchen, mint plant in your garden and so on, and then you can create a story in your head while you are doing that, for e.g you just came from beach with sand in your shoes and entered in your bedroom first(you can picture sand on your bedroom floor), then you went to your kitchen to prepare chicken or anything with oil and then you went to your garden to pick mint leaves to prepare a mint sauce and so on and this way you can remember the list and it would work even for more than 10 items as long as you have enough places you know you can travel in your mind.
The last trick just reminded me that Joe isn't allowed at Josie's halloween parties because of his magic. If he peeked, I didn't see any moment when it could have happened.
This method is really cool and different from the one I learned which is more based in sequential memorising. The technique I learned was that you create an image between the two consecutive entries on the list. So for sand and oil, I would have thought of an oil spill on a beach, but if you asked me what they were out of order, I would struggle. Having all these images ready to connect to numbers makes it seem so much more impressive!
I use the anchoring principle from one of Harry Lorayne's books to memorize names of people (students, mostly) so that I have their names down cold by the end of the second class meeting.
I once had a teacher with a bad memory. He took a picture of the whole class and spend time at home memorizing our names. That was before smartphones were invented (yes, the wheel and the smartphone were invented by the same guy.)

That gets you to twenty items just for fun. Note how from 11 to 20 the same letters are used for the final letters. (Tea...Tot,(t) Noah...Tin(n), May Tam (m) etc.

If I remember correctly, in the first few effects there’s a method to do the same kind of effect as the final trick shown in the video, minus the ‘I feel it’ when Joe puts his hands near hers. The method used in the book is not exactly the same method used here but they both rely on the same principle

I'm glad Brian remembers doing this before, because I do too (I'll tell you why) and have been looking for (and failing to find) the Scam School episode where he did this before with someone else, which was legitimately almost 10 years ago. Except he didn't give them a list of things to associate with each number, just told them to think of the first thing that came to mind for each number, which ended up being most of the things on that list. The reason I remember? Because when he did it, I tried it with most of the numbers from 1-10, picked at random by me and my brother and things I actually wanted to remember at the time (but only needed for like 2 minutes). *And I've been trying to forget those things ever since. They're still in my mind! It plagues me!!* They're finally fading after almost 10 years since memorizing them, but I'll recite them for you. 1. Hot Cross Buns 2. Marry had a Little Lamb 3. Amazing Grace (I needed to remember those three things for our group when we went to a different room to practice playing them on recorder. It ended up being unnecessary anyway because someone else remembered them) 4. Convection currents (Needed to remember that for a science test) 5. The Impossible Game or 5. Herobrine (Just random things to test the trick and see if I could put multiple things on a single number) 7. Dark Magician 8. Blue Eyes White Dragon (Suggested by my brother to test it. We were very into Yu-Gi-Oh) And nothing for 6, 9, or 10. Hey Joe! I think I figured out the secret behind your second trick. I am wondering if it had to do with something that you did here at 11:46 as you asked her to write down her Zodiac?
i believe they thaught the 2nd trick already, im not sure, anyhow i know how it works: at exeactly 11:46 he fold the bottom flap of the paper down to read it, where he shows her where to write her star sign. thats why the paper has this weird text on it, so she writes it only on the bottom right of the paper
My teacher in middle school used this to help us remember our Roman numerals and to this day I remember 4 is IV because poison ivy but that has three leaves. He told me it wouldn't work but hey look at me now I remember one number and the goofy way our brain can remember stuff
I would always use mnemonic devices like that, and at one job I would tell new hires some of the ones I used when I first worked there. For example, we had a phone system that had a different series of buttons to log into them versus logging out of them, and people would often mix up the two. For logging out of the phones, you had to press the "feature" button which was labelled "FEAT", and I would tell people "Just think, when you leave, you use your *feet*! Just ... don't try to think about how you get here." Even though it was ridiculous, I had multiple people tell me that they still think of that example several years later every single time they log out of the phones.
Love some good memory stuff! Surely a numeric alphabet for learning large numbers is next. Can do phone numbers at the same speed as this list for long term recall
Oh wow! And you got looong telephone numbers if you're an American! Here in Denmark we only have 8 numbers. 8️⃣📳 But no need to remember them since our phone does it for us. 🤷🏻♂️
My phone does it too but I've found it pretty enjoyable to just learn most of my contacts list, plus it means if my phone is out of battery or any other unexpected situation I'm still covered

i remember the original list from 10 years ago that was 1gun, 2shoe, 3tree, 4door, 5hive, 6tricks, 7heaven, 8bate, 9wine, 10pen and i added 5 more which are 11(twin towers) 12(olympian gods, 13(jason from 13th) 14(heart of valentines day) and 15(a cake for my birthday). @@scamschool body list is a fantastic addition, thank you! I have aphantasia and cannot form mental images, so a mental palace is not really a trick that works great for me. But being used to thinking in concepts the rhymes and little stories worked a charme. I might try incorporating that in a routine at one point. thanks :D
@@scamschool The list I use is from Dr. Bruno Furst. His words lend themselves to constructing other words up to 100 items, using the first letter of the 10 key words. They are tea, Noah, May, ray, law, jaw, key, fee, pea, zero. 11 would be tot. 12 would be tan. 22 would be nun. 65 would be jail. etc.

Anyway, have you tried the bear on rollerskates or the "think of a tool and a color" (red hammer) for anyone or are those tricks to widely known? My phone does it too but I've found it pretty enjoyable to just learn most of my contacts list, plus it means if my phone is out of battery or any other unexpected situation I'm still covered

i remember the original list from 10 years ago that was 1gun, 2shoe, 3tree, 4door, 5hive, 6tricks, 7heaven, 8bate, 9wine, 10pen and i added 5 more which are 11(twin towers) 12(olympian gods, 13(jason from 13th) 14(heart of valentines day) and 15(a cake for my birthday). I feel like the images Joe uses are a little too fill-in-the-gaps to work with a lot more than ten objects. Like that hen could be fighting anything at all. Maybe that’s just me? Still a good trick though!
This is just regular memory techniques. The list itself is not even needed if you use a memory palace but the idea he uses is thesame.

I have aphantasia and cannot form mental images, so a mental palace is not really a trick that works great for me. But being used to thinking in concepts the rhymes and little stories worked a charme.

@@scamschool The list I use is from Dr. Bruno Furst. His words lend themselves to constructing other words up to 100 items, using the first letter of the 10 key words. They are tea, Noah, May, ray, law, jaw, key, fee, pea, zero. 11 would be tot. 12 would be tan. 22 would be nun. 65 would be jail. etc.
One mistake, he pointed to the guy when he said vase, but he chose base! Hah!

I did something like this for the ten general rules - moving my fingers ever so slightly to point at the ground for "take charge of this post", and other things like that - they changed them O_o; now there are 11 and they are slightly different.
Anyway, have you tried the bear on rollerskates or the "think of a tool and a color" (red hammer) for anyone or are those tricks to widely known?
