I paid for roadside coverage from the rental company for about $15/day. So I called them and they called the local farmer to extract me. Another vehicle that was stuck said it was going to cost them $800 to get pulled out.
Yes, very aware ;). I questioned the tires when I picked up the van as I fully expected them to be studded, as the tires have been on every other winter vehicle rental I've had in Iceland (3x). The rental companies response was not satisfactory in my opinion, basically saying that the tires perform better than studded tires once the studs wear down, but the answer to that is to change the studs or studded tires more frequently, not use an inferior summer tire. They also said "tourists don't know how to drive on ice" which is all the more reason to equip the vehicle with studded tires.
Just wondering did you call The help or the truck just pass the road to help you. Last time I called for help in Iceland, it cost a lot of money.

You know this is Iceland right? Your tires are summer tires btw.
