    I’m 73 now and USED TO do most of the work to my cars myself. I can still relate to the satisfaction you obviously get from doing the job right. Being willing to share your techniques and tricks of the trade says a lot about who you are. And seeing Mrs. O, your little girl, and your pups just amplify your values as a person. If I were closer you’d get all my business.

    Props Mr.O!!!! I live in Northern California and I’ve only had the privilege of working on one rusted car from Washington state. The owners moved to north Cali. Worst experience ever! Has to remove the front struts on a 2006 Cadillac Deville. Broke my big snap on breaker bar. My Milwaukee 1/2 wasn’t busting the nuts lose. Lots of respect to any mechanic working on rusted cars.

    Nice video - the rust reminds me of working on ocean going crab boats - had a 100 hp electric motor to rebuild and did the entire disassembly with a cutting torch - a welder - a hammer and vice grips- put it back together with a torch and one wrench for the new end bell bolts - properly applied heat is a wonderful thing.

WeldingCity LP/Propane/Natural Gas Cutting Tip 3-GPN-00 Size 00 for Victor Torch. Something like this.nice job! oh and the propane is typically cheaper too,1 20lb propane bottle to like 2 or 3 full size oxygen bottles,cheers!

    I am in the middle of replacing ball joints on my '01 TJ, so this vid was a real treat. I got the 2 of the 3 12pt bolts off by with the impact wrench despite the crust, the third no-habla'ed the bad english, so I cut the head off using a Dremel tool with a cut-off wheel, but this did require disconnecting the steering knuckle so the knuckle would turn freely. Some of us don't have a cutting torch :-( I had no problem cutting off the bolt head, and the hub came off with a few tappy-tap-taps. That little plastic part off the axle you said was not needed - it's called an "AXLE SHAFT INNER SLINGER" at least for the TJ series. While I suspected it was useless, since it was broken, I ordered a replacement. Now waiting for it's arrival a RIDICULOUS 13 days. Since I paid for it, I'll wait a little longer and use it. I decided to 'might as well', so I'm replacing just about everything, including the badly corroded and thinned steering knuckle - doing this in particular because the caliper guides are looking scary bad. Thanks!

    I think it's very good that Eric O always tries to show us the many different ways a person can do the same job. Since not all DIYer's have all the fancy tools it gives us options as to how we can approach the same repair. I always get intimated to do U-joint repairs due to the fact that i really don't know what i'm hammering in and out. Lol. Better left to the pros for this one. Lol.

    • @candesearl
      @candesearl 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree with the first part of your observation. But I think once you do one, or two, it really is not that hard. The bottom line is to watch that the U-joint is not too tight and make sure that the C-clips are installed. I have left them out before and then the end-caps fly apart. You can do it. The U-joint is not expensive and easy to learn the process. Remember, keep your stick on the ice as we are all in this together! :-)

  • @BlindBatG34
    @BlindBatG34 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey Eric. I was going to war with Subaru ball joint pinch bolts. I took the knuckles out of the car to keep from destroying CV boots. One of the ball joints got overheated and exploded. Sounded like a shot gun going off in the garage and the ball end of the joint launched itself clear to the otherside of the garage. My ears were ringing for about an hour. The ball joint hit the torch on it's way out and bent it! I would recommend that amateurs like myself wear hearing protection when using a torch around something like a ball joint. Also, don't stand directly in front of the ball joint. Probably a good idea to take the boot off the ball joint and give it a little wiggle from time to time to make sure the grease gases aren't building up inside. Long story short, the pinch bolt came out so life is good.

  • @scottmarshall6766
    @scottmarshall6766 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Burn the zerc off 1st, no grease 'explosion' - it lets the grease out as soon as it gets hot. Just make sure the point the burned off zerc down and away from you and keep your feet back. I personally have tried about all possible approaches, and prefer the specialized screw press (the kind with the sliding hook made for the purpose). But sometimes you have to work with what's around, and the 2 socket and hammer process almost always fits that requirement.
    I like the variety of the videos, nice work.

    Eric,
    Great video and repair job! I love the use of the torch as you do - its something I will probably never have. Im curious about where the SKF U-joint was made as you usually show the part number on the box but this time you did not. I would love to see a part 2 with new the bearing install.
    BTW the underside of my 2002 Focus wagon all the bolts are the same as on that jeep. I just had to replace a rear lower control arm that rotted out. My 'torch' is a Dewalt sawzall with a carbide blade. Had to cut out the inner cam bolt and the outer bushing/bolt. PITA.

    great video, good to see how professionals work.
    I did my jeep front axle u joint at home.
    without oxy torch and big air hammer, it was a pain in the hoha. I was able to remove the bolts with 13mm 12point socket. Took a while with 3 jaw puller to remove the wheel hub, as the hub was rusted on the axle.
    first tried to hammer out the u joint, then a ball joint press, it wasn't budging (yes, I removed all the clips). I was worried I would bend the ears. So I used a grinder to cut off the u joints. and pushed the caps off with pitman arm puller.
    hope this helps someone.

    I used twist sockets. They grab good and when I replace the bolts I use cap head bolts with the Allen heads. Our dodge dealer never stocks them. Big nasty made small work of it. Great video 😎

    Some like seeing brake clean on Eric's videos, but it's the torch and Big Nasty that float my boat. :)

    I had always thought those were 1/2" heads on those bolts till I got new bolts once. Try a 1/2" socket or key, they usually work fine.

    Another great video! Hope you don't mind but I would like to offer a suggestion: Wear a face shield when you are tapping the snap rings into place. I once had one pop back in my face and it broke half of a tooth off! I was lucky it didn't hit me in the eye I guess... Love the videos, always learning!
