something I learned on the farm. when you grease a zerk fitting, wipe it off with a rag good first. then grease but LEAVE the blob of grease that remains on the fitting after you remove the gun. That protects the fitting and bearings by being a place for dirt etc to get caught before it gets into the end of the fitting.

Thanks, Good video! I have a 2018, with central-axle-disconnect on it. I didn't know to put in 4wd first, and my axle disconnect sleeve fell out of place. Then I couldn't slide the axle back in, I could look into axle tube and see that disconnect sleeve had dropped and blocked axle from going back through.
BUT, I found you don't need to pop any diff covers off or drain any oil to fix! What I did, was reach into the end of the axle tube with a really long pry-bar (screwdriver, long rod, etc, anything would work) and carefully lift that sleeve till it looks about centered, then push it back into position (push towards driver side) There's a spring on the electric actuator fork, apparently, that lets you push that sleeve over into 4wd position, even if the truck was parked and disassembled while in 2wd. But it won't stay, the spring loaded fork pops it right back off, and it falls out of alignment if you let it go. So I held it in place with my long bar, while my son turned truck on and switched knob to 4wd, then the electric activator did its thing, and the sleeve stayed put, so axle slid right in, so easy. It was a bit tricky centering the sleeve while sliding it back, took about 60 seconds of fumbling it around, but I did it twice, (first time before I had a helper out there) so it works. Not sure what happens if one would switch truck to 4wd while that sleeve is fallen out of place? Will the actuator pull sleeve back onto shaft by itself, or jam up and break things? I didn't wanna find out the hard way, if someone else knows, comment back please.

Fantastic vid Mr. O. I am in the same boat as your customer there. My Ram 4500 needs new wheel bearings and upper ball joints. 77K +miles on it in NH so hopefully the rust isn't to bad. I do an annual undercoating of Fluid Film on the whole thing including the 11' dump body. I've done front/rear breaks, shocks and a few other things, but the bearing and ball joints (and probably the U-joints) is a bit much for me so off it goes to the "big" truck shop.
This vid give me a good idea of what it takes to do this job ... and everything on my 4500 seems to be twice as big as the 2500/3500 trucks.

Mr/Mrs O, your videos are simply the best. Honestly with all there is to watch on the YT, I find myself watching your channel MOST intently. From the charming chemistry betwixt you two to the professional solutions only years of experience can provide, this is really good stuff! I now 'toot' my brake cleaner and have recently installed a lift in my home garage.
One thing I was thinking as you were pressing out the U Joints ... could you make (weld/bolt/epoxy) a saddle in the side frame of the press where the large oval hole is? It appears that said saddle could line up perfectly with the axle shafts and prevent at least one end of them from cracking you in the coconut.

Eric- I had a ball joint that bent two removers and I heated the smutherines out of, It would not come off. I finally drilled it and hacksawed the rest of it out. My 2007 Dodge 2500 5.9. I also beat the snot out of one of the wheel bearing to get to the u joints.Think I reassembled with 5 lbs of anti seize. What a PAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Who installed these-Baby Huey!!

living in eastern Canada and more salt than anywhere I have learned to cut u joint out with zip disc first , that way you are only banging out one cap at a time instead of 2 caps at the same time , less stress and pressure needed , in theory much less chance of bending ears on axle

excellent presentation. Wish I knew these needed replacing that frequently as my son is on the side of I-40 when front end vibration sheered the studs off and wheel rolled off. He says he recently tightened lug nuts with the new digital torque wrench I bought him. So he figures the bearing is shot and a shop he found on the road is doing the replacement even tho he could do it but he doesn't have all the tools needed especially the 1 5/16" 12 point and torque wrench with him.

another reason i'm a big fan of home made guide studs- those tight fit housings. 1/2 degree off on rotation you aren't getting those bolts in. they should make a shaft extender so you can draw that axle thru the bearing.

After seeing these videos and spending time helping my brother out with his car in Rochester, I've gained a whole new respect for stainless steel. Just seeing you pound out those disc retaining clips and seeing how there's not a spec of wear on them makes me wonder why OEMs don't consider using stainless as a premium option for trucks/car frames. I know it's pricier, but I'm sure many people would pay a premium for it... especially if you're already paying something like $70k for a new truck. If a 2005 Ram Cummins 2500 weighs about 6,000 pounds and 60% of it being steel, then it's about $800 - $1200 in raw steel. It'd be $2,000 - $4,500 if it were to be in stainless. I realize there's a ton of retooling and such, but even if the cost were to be an extra $10,000 for a stainless option, I'm sure there'd be a market for it.

Bonus arm wrestling match! WOOO! 🤘😁🤘
I did pads, rotors, and ball joints on my buddy's '98 Ram 2500 - I recall having to remove the hub bearing assembly just to get the rotor off! Piss poor design. Also had to make a trip down to Tractor Supply (of all places), to grab a 3/4" drive 1-11/16" socket and breaker bar, and a deep 14mm 12-point socket that I now can't remember what for. Was a heck of a job in my crowded barn. Seems the newer models are a bit easier to deal with. Was 6°F outside that night - thankfully my homebuilt waste oil burner was melting our faces in there as we worked - 70° in an uninsulated barn. I have to keep an eye on her, as she likes to spit sparks and flame out the front. Not good in a 50 year old barn with 100 year old wood. Not exactly "EPA approved" . You really have to watch her after a new batch of oil goes in ... because you never know what's in there (water, gasoline, etc.) - makes for some interesting flare-ups. Since I'm not much of a welder/fabricator, there's alot of gaps that shouldn't be there ... 😁 Burns clean though - not a hint of smoke out the pipe when you're not running it hard. Uses an old, gutted Beckett oil burner as a supercharger. I just ran a copper tube through the center, and it drips into my old brake rotor off the Silverado that I welded "oil tight", and a couple rear rotors off a '98 Camry that I cut the faces off and welded together, to make a spool - holds ALOT of heat. 😅
Crazy those components failed so soon in that Ram you had there! I thought my Silverado was bad needing lower ball joints at 38k, and hub bearings, struts, & upper b/j's at 50k. They sure don't build 'em like they used to! I did upper and lower ball joints on our '86 Grand Marquis back in '05 - 160k miles ago! Still all good! I grease them at every oil change (so I won't forget) with Amsoil - the red stuff.
Thanks for the vid - always informative and entertaining! 👍

I have a 2008 3500 and I feel shimmy in the steering wheel. I found the bearing at the axle housing has play. The right side u joint & upper king pin have been replaced before I bought the rig. The left side looks good for original and 129,000 original miles. I've put on about 15,000. miles

I like it when Mrs. O helps out in the shop, but I heard a slap and a growl sound at 7:16! Surely that sweet woman didn't swat you!

I find the flashlight you use with the dial really is now my last choice. (I know you didn't twist my arm to buy one) The pivot point at the bottom is no good under normal cramped quarters. You barely get 45° angle if even that. I'm just glad I found this out with one of the $10 knock offs. You just can't beat the ones that fold in half for best positioning. There I got it off my chest.
