@@LBv666 "Don’t take yourself seriously, but take the music seriously " that's a quote way older than vulfpeck. think i read it in a josh homme interview in the early 2000s and it's probably way older.
I worked in a local club in Örebro, Sweden called Rock Bar and we actualy booked Viagra Boys back in 2015 as one of their first gigs. We didnt have a scene and we could maybe fit 60 people so they just played on the floor in the middle of the audience and literaly trashed the place. From there on I knew these guys were gonna take over the world.
The live version recently- The video on here is 'Viagra boys live lowlands 2023' the open the show with it and its absolutely brilliant, better than the recorded.
Best band ever. I’ve been around the Sun more than 60 times these boys have changed my life. Got to see them two nights ago and I’ll never be the same. Been absorbing their music for the past six months since I discovered them . Such great fortune they happened to be playing within a hundred miles from me.
I'll be honest, I despise that version. I like John Prine and Iris Dement's version, if you cover something you gotta do something better or not at all. That was a huge fail. Harmonizing ain't all that. Ugh
Viagra boys are the most excited I've been about a band in 20+ years... They're just incredible, every song is a dark and unique journey, simply stunning work!
This song in particular is very reminiscent of Devo, but if you listen to Cave World front to back what you'll notice is what seems to be a very deliberate playlist of homage to one predecessor or another. A track called The Cognitive Trade-Off Hypothesis has a Gorillaz vibe, Big Boy leans into Odelay-era Beck, and I'm sure there are probably bands they are winking at on other tracks I just don't recognize.
Just saw them at Riot Fest in Chicago, incredible performance! Such a great and fresh band. They are hilarious and their frontman has undeniable charisma and is also a total weirdo at the same time, I love it.
Viagra Boys are what happens when jazz enthusiasts make punk rock that you can dance to on ecstasy. I saw them at Metro in Chicago the night before their set at Riot Fest (which I also saw), and it was one of the best shows I've ever seen. Almost got crushed by the modest sea of people, and it was absolutely worth it. I also got to help deliver the synth player back to the stage after a surf session.
@@nadiamccall4311 live.. it's definitely jazz. Perhaps not so much on record. Sax all over the place when I saw them yesterday. Musical comparison for me was like the intro scene from Babylon combined with the Velvet Underground and Joy Division.
Saw Viagra Boys open for QotSA a couple nights ago. I don't think many in the crowd were aware of VB and the crowd seemed indifferent at first. However, by the last couple songs of their set they had totally won the place over and everybody was on their feet and moving. I had never seen them live before and was only aware of them after seeing their set from Glastonbury here on YT. As soon as I watched that set, I purchased all the albums they have released to date. Now that I've seen them live in person I'm aware of just how good they are.
You should absolutely try seeing them in a smaller venue too. They are awesome with QOTSA but they have even another layer of intelligent insanity and showmanship in more intimate venues.
@@gbutch21 I'm definitely going to keep my eyes on their touring schedule and hope I get the opportunity to see them in a smaller venue. I don't know, I might have missed my chance given the positive attention and new fans they're gaining lately.
UPDATE: SHOW WAS KILLER. They did a 6 min atonal saxophone solo from a guy in booty shorts just so Sebastian could smoke a cigarette in the middle of the show.
Viagra Boys are one of ther best modern live bands, blending their punk sensibilities with jazz and electronics, they give maximum energy and have a knack for feeling like everything might fall apart at any second and descend into chaos, but they perfectly harness that energy in a really organic and authentic way.
The first song I listened to by VB was Research Chemicals and I just loved how chaotic and amazing it is, I followed them since. I was lucky enough to see them live, the show was just as amazing. Just as chaotic 😅
The singer is so cool in his moving on stage, something very dynamic and quiet/sensual. His deep low voice (speaking voice also concerned) adds to a tremendous punk loose attitude. Sensuality combined with such powerful music (not messy, sophisticated) AND a large amount of humour: saw Sebastian singing, passing the microphone from hand right to left.+++....and the micro falls down. Fortunately, long wire helps! Great opprtunity to discover his spontaneous smiling at himself. This band is wonderfully PHYSICAL, a great experience ON STAGE: Moves, Voice, Short shorts, Music that drives your own body in a pogo, or a non choregraphic dance, or in a long lasting and painful for the belly laugh, and surely everyting in the same time! A physical band at every point is a rage. French comment. VB has become my new favorite band for almost 2 years. Have a beautiful evening. MERCI POUR LA VIDEO, BELLE SOIREE.
Been a Viagra Boys fan since 2018 when Josh Homme played them on the Alligator Hour, thought even then they would make the perfect opener for QOTSA. Seen them twice, once when they opened for QOTSA and again the next night headlining their own show. The attitude and energy they bring to the stage is contagious, they know how to get the crowd moving. Everyone in the band brings something profound and unique to the stage. Absolutely one of the best bands to grace this planet. My wife and I ran into Sebastian on the street before the show, nice guy, wish I could have grabbed a beer with him.
Always wonderful as a Swede to see other Swedes getting the recognition they deserve. I've been listening to VB for quite some time now, and I *love* that they are touring with Queens of The Stone Age - that's a match made in heaven! There's always a very special pride when you come from such a small country as I am, when you see that one of the _(in my humble opinion)_ best bands right now from that same country are starting to get a lot of recognition around the world. It just does something to me. We have such a vibrant and amazing music scene in Sweden _(and in Norway too, where I live for the moment)_ and I really hope now that Viagra Boys are getting more and more attention, that it will lead to people looking into other bands from Sweden. Because we may be a small country, but we have *a looot* of talent per capita :)
Viagra boys are just the fuckin best. The humor, the subtle but amazing musicianship, the raw post punk aesthetic, I just can’t get enough. I’m going to the QOTSA show to see them open. QOTSA is ok too :). I’m partial to the song “Worms.” Just absolutely love It.
Absolutely love these guys Justin, been following these for a good while, what I like the most about them is their song writing and structures are so simple, but crafted perfectly and Sebs vocals are brilliant and really different, also he talks sense.
Finally got to see VB live in Sydney and the version of this was a meandering, 10 minute long rinse out that dissolved into house and eventually some super mathy time signature shit that went over my head. Sebastian walked off stage midway through the chaos and came back refreshed. They are the best live band I've seen in years!
I saw them opening for Qotsa a few months ago having no clue who they were. They were AMAZING live and now one of my favorite bands. When i was in college i lived in a house filled with about a dozen punk rock musicians where we partied pretty much every day. These guys really took me back to the good ole days
I didn’t catch on till late either. I discovered them from JH reviewing their Glastonbury performance and have been absolutely hooked since. Thanks for helping spread good music!
The album and this song have been out over a year. The *video* is new, though. Not hating though - SO GLAD you are covering them again! They truly are my favorite band of the last couple years.
I have seen them live 3 times now and its always such a fun energetic show! They have really sky rocketed up near the top of my favorite artists. Their set at Riot last weekend was amazing!
I'm amazed you still find the time for new vlog material with all the tour prep going on. Clearly the hardest working man in rock n roll. See you in Arizona!
Absolutely love them, there’s so much life in their music that I feel has been lost in a lot of the modern songs, has the same stripped back vibes as the early 2000’s garage bands I love it
Just saw them in Des Moines on a sold out Monday night show. Absolutely wild. The crowd kept trying to mosh, but the dance beats thwarted any of that. They just ended up bouncing up and down to the beat and dancing. During "Return To Monke", they could have started a riot if they wanted to. Very charismatic.
LOVE LOVE LOVE your show Justin! It would be amazing if you all came to Canada soon! I dont see any dates for any shows in Vancouver!!! Please come play here soon!!!
I saw them in Glasgow at the start of the year at Barrowlands, what a show they put on. The bassist is solid, Seb is such a character and the saxophonist wild!! Such a tight live band.
Loving the content👍. I saw VB at Rock City (Nottingham, UK) in January 2023. They were excellent, a perfect blend of chaos, talent and humour. Just marvellous 👍
Saw VBs in Detroit (Majestic Theater) and absolutely loved the entire experience (including the opening band.) Super nice fans throughout the diverse crowd, all ages and backgrounds represented. VBs create a super psychedelic vibe, can’t say enough good things about it and absolutely can’t wait to see them again.
Saw these guys play in London & at Glastonbury - they are on of the best live bands I’ve ever seen. So much energy, really gets the whole place & crowd moving.
I was sceptical of Viagra boys until I saw a live video and gut curious. So I went and saw them this summer on a festival in Gothenburg Sweden and it was great. Every one in the crowd was enthralled young and old. It was this really special feeling of sharing this weird experience. They really are something special.
Saw them this past winter. Unbelievable. Sebastian was like seeing Jim Morrison or Iggy Pop in their prime. The band is incredibly tight. So much fun!!!
I just saw them two day ago, and it was awesome!! Such a strange and fun energy and highly entertaining. Their music has a way of just sticking with you.
I saw them open for qotsa just last month. It was really cool to see them when over a crown like that! No body was standing at the beginning and by the end of their set everyone was a fan!
Absolutely love these guys, by far my favourite band. Saw them in Cardiff earlier in the year. Managed to get front row and it was the best live performance I've seen ever.
I discovered Viagra Boys on The Alligator Hour on Beats 1 where Homme had played “Sports”. As soon as I heard the sax and the lyrical content I was hooked. I’ve noticed a lot of their songs have the same bass line all of the way through and then they will layer the chorus and take the vocals up an octave. I got to see them open for Queens in KC on Wednesday and they were great. I had tickets to see them in NC headlining their own tour but, they cancelled it for some reason. I’d love to see them do a full set one day. I hope to catch you on the US tour coming up Justin. I hope you are well!
There is something so authentic about them and raw, yet there is also a lot of musicality and talent there. I CANNOT stop listening to their back catalogue atm. Just puts you in a feel good mood. And Seb is a brilliant frontman.
Saw them open for queens in kc last year . I was one of a handfull that had heard them before the show . The crowd was seated when they hit the stage and on their feet cheering by the end. Love this band They should do a tour with idles :)
Saw them at Record Junkie in Sheffield a few years back with their original guitarist before he sadly passed away. The PA stack on the right hand side of the stage nearly toppled over into the crowd, some old punk bloke caught it as it was going and just held it for the rest of the gig. Saw them again at Albert Hall in Manchester on the most recent album, someone lobbed a full pint from the balcony which landed on the sound desk and cut the sound out for 20/30 minutes. Seb the singer just stripped down to his pants and vamped the whole time whilst every crew member in the building ran here, there, and everywhere trying to sort it. Amazing band and always, always eventful live.
Love this band!!! Their guitar solos give me solace that I truly can be a proper musician at my local jam night. I've used the one note solo to good effect on more than one occasion.☺☺☺
greetings friend of freedom. Japanese rock music continues to push boundaries as it is still the number one, most listened to genre in Japan, as opposed to rap or pop, and i highly recommend you review the band GEZAN. I have never seen a band musically more united in rhythm, soul, and garb.
Didn't know them. Just saw them, my new favorite band. Seeing them again in a couple days. Best live band on the planet right now and I've seen hundreds of shows. Pure magic!
What a great little track. Love what sounds like a flute dropping in and out all through. Nice touch. Also, the computer generated keys/percussion part is reminiscent of some mid era Depeche Mode (in my head anyway) but can't think which track in particular. But it never stands still and keeps evolving all the way through. Deffo will be investigating these guys some more. Nice one Justin
This is why I watch because, right . . . well . . . I'm old and I'd never even think of listening to a band called viagra boys - their name sounds a bit like a weird version of Venga boys to an old person like me but I love them they are really great, so once again, I thank you for bringing music (that I like) to my ears. I listened to Punk Rock Loser too and your analysis of it (cool cowboy hat with headphones too). Now I'm going to watch lots more Veng - no, Viagra boys. Oh yeah and Dans music recording complex looks nice too - does he have a sauna in there? - that wood definitelyreminiscent of a Swedish sauna. 🤣🎸🎶
I always learn a lot when I watch your videos. The foremost thing I learn is I am not good at "hearing music". I generally have no idea what key something is in until someone tells me, then can maybe figure the rest out over hours, days, or even weeks 😂
@@JustinHawkinsRidesAgain I do practice playing after someone figures it out for me. Then I rely on solid memory. Ear training has always been like a job for me and takes away the fun. Which is probably why I play on my basement vs you and others that actually make money doing it. Well it’s that plus I hate going out at night
Found them via TH-cam during Covid…and said I can’t wait to see them live. I saw them this year in NYC….just as I expected…high energy and very entertaining. Someone in the crowd yelled ‘Freebird!’ Sebastian said, ‘hey that’s a great song, but we’re not a cover band.’ Just what I like about him…can’t wait to here this new album and see them again. Check out the duet with Amy Taylor from Amyl and the Sniffers…’In spite of ourselves’ cover. And ‘Sports’…‘ain’t nice’.
Please add sunny Madrid to your tour. I know it's in the middle of nowhere but you can pop to Lisbon after. La Sala Riviera awaits! It has palm trees in there and everything.

I enjoyed Justin’s guitar playing of the Viagra Boys music better than their video. Not a horrible band but they sound like a cross between Electric Six and Queens of the Stone Age.
I saw them in Oklahoma City with QOTSA it was top tier all around. I had heard of them, but never listened to their songs before. So hearing them live and for the first time was pretty cool. Definitely a fan now.
Just went to see QOTSA last night and i was blown away by their stage presence, they were loose and played so well together. They gained a new fan for sure!
Today at exactly 11.00am AEST, I clicked ‘Buy tickets’… See you in Adelaide early next year. I cant wait, and same with my boss who’s never been to a Darkness show! 😊
Being from Sweden I was lucky to discover Viagra Boys early and see them play some really small rooms here in Malmö. I tried spreading the gospel but convincing people to listen to a band called Viagra Boys isn't easy haha. Such a great band, and awesome live. I'm happy for their success, I love that people outside of Sweden have discovered them and that they're playing all over the world now
I randomly stumbled across Viagra Boys a few years back, their original shrimp session video. The main thing I enjoy about their band as a whole is how they obviously don't take themselves too seriously. Lots of humor in their music, Inside jokes and recurring themes.
Brilliant band! I was fortunate enough to see them play on the Park Stage, safe to say that was the highlight of my Glastonbury this year. (Even better than QOTSA, Foo's and Manics!)
👍have a nice day Justin, i hope your tour goes really well, i was telling my daughter i follow this fabulous guy who gives great music reviews, she asked who you were, i said i didn't think you would know him, that he was from the band Darkness, she said i love that band and she went on to say one of her favourites songs was on of yours, so there you go. I’ve been hooked since you put me on. They’re an authentic band doing it for real. Love ‘em.
They're awesome man. Glad you're covering them.
Saw Viagra Boys in Minneapolis and holy sh!t the crowd was hype. Honestly best show I've seen in a minute
This could be a great supporting act for your Europe Tour this year! Looking forward to seeing you in Hamburg in November!
A new feeling of punk, and I'm all for it. Swedish bands, they always have a way to reinventing a genre to make it just that much cooler....
Oh My God I want to make it to see you guys in Los Angeles this year Justin!!!! I’m trying!!!😍👍🏼❤️
Definitely love to see them live as all the live shows available watched they are awesome crazy and totally entertaining
I have never seen a band musically more united in rhythm, soul, and garb.
particularly their songs wasted youth, body odd, tokyo, or DNA

Just saw them last night as the opener for queens of the Stone Age. They absolutely rocked!!! The lead singers stage presence is unmatched!
Seeing them with Qotsa on October 6th. Two of my favorite bands together. Can’t wait!
Check out the song "into the sun" by them
My favorite band from recent years. I saw them live three times (all great), but their set at Desert Daze in 2022 was AMAZING!!!
I always learn a lot when I watch your videos. The foremost thing I learn is I am not good at "hearing music". I generally have no idea what key something is in until someone tells me, then can maybe figure the rest out over hours, days, or even weeks 😂
You can practice!
I saw them a couple weeks ago and they were amazing! So gritty and fun and refreshing!
Such a good band. They really bring something new and interesting
I'm going to see them twice this upcoming weekend and can. not. WAIT!
Had not heard them- loved it! Thanks for sharing Justin!
Please add sunny Madrid to your tour. I know it's in the middle of nowhere but you can pop to Lisbon after. La Sala Riviera awaits! It has palm trees in there and everything.
Absolutely love your channel and music and all you post about keep up the great work and best of luck with your tour!👏👌🤗😘💗👍🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
Love your guitar playing
Thanks!
I enjoyed Justin’s guitar playing of the Viagra Boys music better than their video.
Not a horrible band but they sound like a cross between Electric Six and Queens of the Stone Age.
There’s a great version of this in studio recorded live on KEXP. Also reminds me of early Gang of Four, Armalite Rifle, re: biting guitar.
Kexp really needs to release all their stuff, whoever does the sound engineering there is a wizard, normally sounds better than the studio versions.
I saw them in Oklahoma City with QOTSA it was top tier all around. I had heard of them, but never listened to their songs before. So hearing them live and for the first time was pretty cool. Definitely a fan now.
I might be raving mad with this thought, but their sound/vibe reminds me so much of Ian Dury and The Blockheads. Fantastic stuff.
Just went to see QOTSA last night and i was blown away by their stage presence, they were loose and played so well together. They gained a new fan for sure!
Cool song. You always turn me onto some great stuff I never heard of before. Thanks man!
Today at exactly 11.00am AEST, I clicked ‘Buy tickets’…
See you in Adelaide early next year. I cant wait, and same with my boss who’s never been to a Darkness show! 😊
Got our tickets today for The Darkness Auckland show in NZ. Can't wait!!! 🎸
Being from Sweden I was lucky to discover Viagra Boys early and see them play some really small rooms here in Malmö. I tried spreading the gospel but convincing people to listen to a band called Viagra Boys isn't easy haha. Such a great band, and awesome live. I'm happy for their success, I love that people outside of Sweden have discovered them and that they're playing all over the world now
I think the stop animated synth is made to looks like a KORG MS20. Which could certainly made those sounds! Love your videos!❤️🤘🤙🖖
I had tickets to see them in Dublin last year, but couldn’t get over there. I was so bummed. I love them so much.❤🍤
I seen them live at RiotFest 23 in Chicago about 2 months ago. They definitely kept the crowd going till the end. Been a fan of them ever since.
Saw them a few years ago at birthdays in London and it was one of the funnest gigs I've ever been to
Caught them in London at start of this year. Best gig atmosphere I’ve ever experienced.
Great summary! They ROCK - just found them!
The synth is a Korg MS20 (with dials and patch cables). Not sure if it's an original from the 70's or a reissue but it definitely sounds cool.
I randomly stumbled across Viagra Boys a few years back, their original shrimp session video.
The main thing I enjoy about their band as a whole is how they obviously don't take themselves too seriously.
Lots of humor in their music, Inside jokes and recurring themes.
Saw them this year at Sziget Festival. Really great show.
Cheers.😊
So glad and privileged to seen them live at barras best experience ever
