Punk was all about inclusivity and fighting for a more equal world. It was about repsecting and highliting the plight of the oppressed. So changing their name is the most punk thing they could do.
The word "slavery" has been used to describe the conditions that victims of state and capitalist oppression face for more than a hundred years. By ignoring that, they just proved that their understanding of systemic injustice doesn't go beyond "chattel slavery was bad and racist", completely out of touch middle class bullshit...
Played a bunch of festivals over the last five years or so with these guys. Not really my bag but hats off to the noise they create. Really dreadful name change.... pandering to the cause isn't exactly punk is it.
What's punk has to change with the times, the establishment you're raging against isn't the same as it was 30 years ago and if the establishment is racist, fighting racism is punk. And hey, if it's pandering, why is everyone so up in arms about it? Doesn't sound much like taking the easy option to me.
They are an incredible band, the gigs are epic. The Slaves was originally meant as we are all slaves to the wage, the 9 til 5 etc. not the historical slave trade, they realised it was misconstrued and causing offence so changed it. Personally I'm not sure about the new name, but couldn't really give a monkeys!
@@Hejon25 Yeah because of caring what the general public finds offensive. You can twist it any way you want, they bent over to society's demands which is basically the opposite punk supposed to be.
Good day to you mate. Did you record this episode right after a gig in US??? If yes, Chapeau for your dedication to this channel and to your fans. I always thought you were a big hearted man... that would be the proof....- 39 to Milan gig!!!!!🤘🤘🤘
Oh,Creaming Jesus.I remember they had this brilliant Cover Version of The Cure 's "A Forest". The Dancefloor was always full of Pogo dancing Goths and Punks. That was great fun.
I think one thing this shows is what a wide umbrella of styles punk has, even to someone like me who is old and thinks it sounds more like a fusion of metal and English rap than punk.
Screw premium, I'm fond of the way you comment on the adverts when they pop up; and you have the neck end of half a million subscribers, TH-cam should be paying you :D. Not sure they needed to change their name: the concept of slavery pre-dates the Transatlantic Slave Trade, (and all the other modern forms,) by tens of thousands of years. We are all descended from slaves and from slave-owners. That's just a universal part of the human condition; just as we are all descended from cannibals. Okay, so they felt the need to change the name, (and I do respect that,) what a fabulous way to go about it. Firstly, what a great name they've picked instead. It's completely incongruous with what they do. Nice one lads, it's a better name than Slaves anyway. Secondly, I love that they've released a song addressing the flak they got for it. Start as you mean to go on and take no prisoners. I love it. And thirdly, what a f'kin' great song. I spend far too much of my life browsing TH-cam and that's the best thing I've heard in weeks. Right that's enough, (nay too much,) from me! I'm off to see if they've got a channel, so I can subscribe to it.
Soft Play are fucking amazing. Any band that cites Rancid as an influence are bound to be banging. This song is a proper middle finger to all the arseholes. Love it.
This song is aimed at me because they really leaned into "the message" after the first album and they missed the mark with the songs. So it was a double wammy. They got preachy at the same time thier music started to suck. But this is a great comeback.
This happened with a handful of bands around the same time. Slaves (UK) changed to Soft Play. Slaves (US) changed to Rain City Drive. Eskimo Callboy changed to Electric Callboy. I mean, the Dixie Chicks changed to just Chicks.
As much as it's nice Slaves (US) changed their name in memory of their Manchester show and I liked not having to explain it wasn't Slaves (UK) who still had their name then I don't get the need to change it for reasons outside of wanting a change since they changed lead singer. I mean, there was a valid reason for being called Slaves and no one complained. I don't get it with some of the bands that jumped on the trend to rename.
@Void-Realm Fear of cancelation, I guess. Even though I'm fairly certain that most bands or companies actually gain a following when they publicly refuse to bend the knee. 🤷♂️
Just wondering whether "Soft Play" is a fusion between the Doors' album "The Soft Parade" and the rock band "Coldplay". After just this videos listen I also wonder whether the song "Punk's Dead" is in E minor. Anyway, I have been enjoying listening to Code Orange's "The Above" this year, so it would appear that hardcore punk is still alive and pogo dancing this year. There are also loads of pop punk bands touring the UK (Fall Out Boy, Blink-182 and others) this year.
"Soft play is an activity for children that involves playing in a specially designed area with soft surfaces and equipment" almost seems like a bit of f*ck you to people who criticized the original name but was all the more strange when they decided to keep the name permanently
I did love a right good mosh at the mighty Cardiacs 'back in the day', but having just watched the live version from Reading of this rather awesome song, I'd be concerned I'd lose my varifocals in the general maelstrom. (And my knees might give out)
Yes they are woke for changing their name!! What's wrong with the name Slave? It's even a verb for crying out loud! How many bands took their names from Nazi origins ... Joy Division, (the sexual slavery wing of a Nazi concentration camp) U2 (after the German U Boat), Spandau Ballet (named after the Spandau concentration camp). At least those bands weren't formed during the Woke era.
So... you give them a bit of shit, then they put what they heard though their amplifiers to send your shit right back only louder, so it's all evened out and you lads can go back to being friendsie again. Is that about right?..
Punk will never die. Every country will be touched and changed and leave its mark. I would suggest that Japan's Otoboke Beaver hold punk dearest check them out, then there's South Africa's Soap Girls, Kazakhstan's Adaptatsiya, West coast USA's Starcrawler & Australia's Amyl & the Sniffers. Justin's reacted to the last two why not give the Beaver's a bit of promotion too? Band's changing their names..? Has Justin heard Eskimo... sorry Electric Callboy? He should.
Punk is dead i grew up durring the 3rd wave of punk, everyone wanted to be an individual we made alot of our own clothes to react to the styles we liked. It was all about being yourself and being able to talk and share ideas whether troublesome or not. So much of it was about being yourself. Now it's all band wagon jumping all the kids out there pretending to be gay and transgender for the like or views it's so disrespectful to my friends who were out being themselves while the rest of society was making fun of them or putting them down and they were still out and openly being themselves. All the hard work they did to live they're own life and supporting others. Kids and punks today have no idivuality everyone copies what ever happens to be popular everyone is afraid to state they're real feelings about anything because it might now be how the other 90% think. Thank goodness I never claimed for be a punk just a rock and roller. The punk scene aside from some old school bands is just lame as all hell.
@@jonnyhafer936 Punk is all about being yourself so people should.... not talk about being gay or trans? I live in one of the most progressive cities in the world and my gay and trans friends are still regularly threatened and attacked for being who they are in public. It's not a fun little bandwagon, it's spitting in the face of the establishment, a new frontier. You claim there's no individuality and yet you want everyone to just go back to the way they were 30 years ago. Talk about being a conformist.

Something about it reminds me of Killing in the Name. Can’t be a bad thing. Think this kind of passionate rage & aggression have been missing from the punk scene for years. Nice to see it return.
Don’t get TH-cam Premium or an ad blocker, Justin! Start a series of ad music criticism instead! 😂 Is funny how annoyed you get at the ads! 😆
It’s never gone away, you just haven’t heard the bands..
@@tobyb1018 Yup, probably true. So I’ll rephrase; nice to see it becoming more available to people who aren’t deeply invested in the punk scene but who still enjoy punk rock and have been missing it due to it’s underground nature over the last 2-3 decades. That better? 😂
Reacting to the music in bad ads would be classic 😅👌
I was fortunate enough to see them in LA opening for Kasabian in 2017. The energy was unlike anything I'd experienced. Magnificent show.
Thank you to Justin's prlrlrlrlrlodiucer for adding this to the JHRA ooooovrlrlrlre. Absolute face smacker. Subsequent thanks to Justin for pointing out it was Robbie in the video. I thought it was Goldie 😂
Punk was all about inclusivity and fighting for a more equal world. It was about repsecting and highliting the plight of the oppressed. So changing their name is the most punk thing they could do.
and soft play sounds like foreplay, guessing that's the joke
The word "slavery" has been used to describe the conditions that victims of state and capitalist oppression face for more than a hundred years. By ignoring that, they just proved that their understanding of systemic injustice doesn't go beyond "chattel slavery was bad and racist", completely out of touch middle class bullshit...
Cringe
@@GolovaPomidor What's cringe?
@@tonycowin didn't know the most punk thing is being a pussy
Played a bunch of festivals over the last five years or so with these guys. Not really my bag but hats off to the noise they create. Really dreadful name change.... pandering to the cause isn't exactly punk is it.
What's punk has to change with the times, the establishment you're raging against isn't the same as it was 30 years ago and if the establishment is racist, fighting racism is punk. And hey, if it's pandering, why is everyone so up in arms about it? Doesn't sound much like taking the easy option to me.
Yassssss!! LOVE Soft Play!! 🔥🔥🔥
Very punk to change a band name because it's causing offence 😂
@@rkk578 The punk thing is not really caring that your audience will care, which they did, and they dedicated a song to it
@@Hejon25 Yeah because of caring what the general public finds offensive. You can twist it any way you want, they bent over to society's demands which is basically the opposite punk supposed to be.
@@rkk578 Nah, they did what they wanted to do, that's what punk is.
Talking of changing names, what’s your thoughts on Sleezy Jet versus Leicester band Easy Life?
Firstly, it’s good to hear Billy Childish is still influencing people (not that he cares). And secondly, get an ad blocker-they’re free.
Good day to you mate. Did you record this episode right after a gig in US??? If yes, Chapeau for your dedication to this channel and to your fans. I always thought you were a big hearted man... that would be the proof....- 39 to Milan gig!!!!!🤘🤘🤘
Recorded inadvance to US tour. Currently only on 3 rd show, LA, in the US. Still weeks to go
Oh,Creaming Jesus.I remember they had this brilliant Cover Version of The Cure 's "A Forest". The Dancefloor was always full of Pogo dancing Goths and Punks. That was great fun.
I think one thing this shows is what a wide umbrella of styles punk has, even to someone like me who is old and thinks it sounds more like a fusion of metal and English rap than punk.
Best song I have heard all year, thats for talking about it :) P.S. Subed and Liked, whoop whoops! keep up the great work.
What a tune. Fucking adore this band, one of the best about today that’s for sure. Surreal to see you covering them haha
Their band name is racist towards the millions of white slaves of Africa and Arabia. 💯 Agree xx
I really like the song. Never got any Talking Heads influence though and the Robbie slot wasn't a high point
Heavy Jelly gonna be awesome
I have been waiting for this yeahhh mannn
Seen this band 37 times over the years & I can confirm, every single time it goes off
Screw premium, I'm fond of the way you comment on the adverts when they pop up; and you have the neck end of half a million subscribers, TH-cam should be paying you :D.
Changing the name of the band was probably the most Punk thing anyone has done in the scene in years.
Hi Justin, have you reviewed Mclusky's unpopular parts of a pig yet? Thanks in advance!
This was probably a fckn blast to compose and it sounds so good too, the "punk's dead cuz of you" line is hilarious
This happened with a handful of bands around the same time. Slaves (UK) changed to Soft Play. Slaves (US) changed to Rain City Drive. Eskimo Callboy changed to Electric Callboy. I mean, the Dixie Chicks changed to just Chicks.
Girl Band became Gilla Band and Scalping became Scaler too.
Viet Cong also changed their name to Preoccupations. A little longer ago
@@stittastuttaGilla Band are awesome ❤
As much as it's nice Slaves (US) changed their name in memory of their Manchester show and I liked not having to explain it wasn't Slaves (UK) who still had their name then I don't get the need to change it for reasons outside of wanting a change since they changed lead singer. I mean, there was a valid reason for being called Slaves and no one complained. I don't get it with some of the bands that jumped on the trend to rename.
@Void-Realm Fear of cancelation, I guess. Even though I'm fairly certain that most bands or companies actually gain a following when they publicly refuse to bend the knee. 🤷♂️
If they want to change their name then that's entirely their choice. If others don't like it they can always go listen to Ed Sheeran instead.
(And my knees might give out)
Justin you are proof that beautiful people❤ are real
Had the pleasure of meeting Punk at a charity do once. It was surprisingly down to earth, and VERY funny.

Robbie Williams is like the Teletubbies sun, but the dark version.
I saw Hurricane Party at a gig years back and they were incredible!
I feel like we overlooked Robbie William's head in a cloud with just a mere mention of him and nothing more
By definition they are in fact woke for changing their band name.
Going from a hardcore name to literally having the word 'soft' in the name instead is so hysterically stupid and of this era lmao. All bark, no bite
yes please do it without the ads !
Justin Fucking Hawkins Rides Againnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn!!! 🎸🎵🎶
I was totally one of the people deriding the name change. This is a proper, proper response I love it.
So... you give them a bit of shit, then they put what they heard though their amplifiers to send your shit right back only louder, so it's all evened out and you lads can go back to being friendsie again.
I love this song. Great energy
