Like many of us Australians, the first time I saw Southern River Band live was at your gig at the Enmore Theatre last year. I was totally blown away by this band and I've seen them play several times since. They instantly brought to the mind the classic rock and roll I grew up on (many decades ago). I'm old enough to be their grandma, but every time they play near me you will find me in the front row dancing my Docs off. Thank you so much for bringing this wonderful band to my attention.
This has Thin Lizzy absolutely written all over it at the beginning of the song - Are you ready (to rock)?? Also shades of Zeppelin's Rock And Roll. Then it moves into that bluesy groove. Pure class. Been a long lonely time for a band like this for sure! Love it!
Check out The Angels' Take a Long Line for the opening riff, or Marseille off the same album (Face to Face),.which predates the release of Are You Ready? by two years and were staples of rock radio in Australia for decades.
@@aaronleverton4221Lizzy were playing Are You Ready on tour in '77, the recordings of which were released on Live and Dangerous in '78, the same month as the The Angels album seemingly. Now we'd just need to find out if they went to see Lizzy on tour...
@@johnny88sunday Lizzy toured Australia in 1978 and played the steps of the Opera House a few months after the release of both Live and Dangerous and Face to Face. 1980 was the earliest release I could see for Are You Ready. then I saw that it was part of the Opera House set I do learn something new every day. Anyway, the Angels came up with that sound in Alberts' Sydney studio with producer Mark Opitz, their previous (debut) album had been produced by Vanda and Young
@@aaronleverton4221 Not the same riff at all. Great band tho, what memories of listening to Take the Long Line in 78'-80' in a club we used to frequent in Lekeitio, a small fishing village in the Basque Country. Young sailors used to bring all sorts of great albums when they came back home after months at sea, that was one of them.
@@xebio6 Didn't way it was the same riff and it's close enough that it is what I immediately thought of and given where the Southern River Band comes from it is far more likely to be the inspiration than Thin Lizzy.
Man….i was listening my rock n roll playlists on youtube last week, and then, this band comes to my sight. It was almost 2 a.m, I was falling asleep and start to see and listening to them. I not specialist or musician, but I have almost 50 years and I’ve listening everything you imagine. I had the same feeling about the band: AC DC from 70’s with Bon Scott, blues like Steve Ray Vaughan and the insane guitars from Status Quo. This guys are extremely fucking good. My mate and I stood at the back in front of the sound desk and the EODM set finished with the frontmen of both bands coming down the back to us and doing a guitar solo play off arms reach distance from us. It was a very memorable moment indeed.
This episode is a perfect example of why I love this channel...was introduced to some new amazing music, learned something and laughed along the way. I also heard some ZZ Topish elements which is never bad! You are a gem!!!
This is the best rock and roll song i have heard in years. Getting some peter green fm vibes in the blues breakdown with that heavy 2nd guitar coming up during the blues solo.
Yep, my ears heard that too! Quite a lot of early 70's Status Quo influence in there as well. Have a listen to an old Quo song called Unspoken Words. If that's not Peter Green playing the solo its somebody (and I'm pretty sure it ain't Francis Rossi) doing a fantastic job of sounding like Peter Green.
Thank you for bringing this wonderfulness to my ears - I had sadly not heard of them before. Really enjoyed your reaction too. The hairstyle actually reminds me of Eddie Van Halen in the early 90's. Rock on!
I was blown away by these guys at The Darkness gig in the Tivoli in Brisbane last year. These guys will be huge if they keep the momentum. Just proper rock n roll.
Thank you, Justin, for bringing SRB to your channel. I've been a fan since I saw them with The Darkness in Brisbane in 2022. I have since seen them twice more when they come to Brissie and I tell ya - Stan Qualen slaps hard when they are live. I always manage to find myself hard up against the stage and just about lose my head every time. They should be headlining stadiums and when that day comes, I hope the be that old bitch on the barrier that goes to all their Aussie shows. They are on repeat on my Spotify, I've lost track of all the SRB shirts I have... My kids know exactly who SRB are and I have two under 2!! It should be mentioned the chemistry between Cal and all his band mates on stage is nothing short of electrifying, captivating and soul grabbing. They are true entertainers and I'm proud that they are ours. 🇦🇺 Thank you for choosing them in 2022. Thank you for introducing the world to SRB. And thank you for bringing them to JHRA. ❤❤❤
What a voice! And the band play as one, using phrases we’ve heard thousands use, but very rarely with such impeccable meter. ACDC made a career out of doing what virtually everyone who aped them utterly failed at. Nailing the tempo, leaving holes you could drive a truck thru. These guys are right there.

Cal is a pretty good guitarist and singer for a drummer. Cal is a freak can play every instrument at a super high level and also one of the funniest people in the world. live this band crush every time
I was going to say pretty much the same thing (not only can Cal sing and play guitar, he's a pretty mean little drummer too, although a little un-orthodox with his technique)🤣 I had the privilege to jam with him a couple of times about 12-14yrs ago at his place. Me and a few of my band members went there for his parents weekly Tues night blues club jams. Cal also came to plenty of our gigs before he had a band, under age of course, I think we were a bad influence😁. At the time, Cal was already super talented and a fkn funny dude, still in high school, same age as my nephew, both went to the same school. Great to see him out there kicking ass and rocking the planet nowadays👍👌🤘🇦🇺
Australia has one of the greatest music cultures on the planet, I swear. So many absolutely phenomenal bands have come outta there and I'm so glad you shared this kickass band :D
I think our community radio scene deserves a shout out on this front, we’re very fortunate in as much as we still have stations that are curated by folks that actually love music, and not plotted by SaaS executives who love nothing but money. A lot of great ‘smaller’ acts can make a living here due to the exposure they get thanks to these ‘smaller’, community sponsored stations.
Very Airborne, very Jackyl. Not complaining, all bands should sound this good. I will definitely look into this band. Love Aussie rock. love The Chats, The Angels. Kings of the Sun's Full Frontal Attack is a classic album all rock fans should know.
Hi Justin. Thank you for sharing the music of this band. I've never heard of them and I was blown away! Australia has some of my favorite groups: AC DC, Airbourne, Midnight Oil and Wolfmother. And now I can had these guys to the list. Well done mate, cheers!
First time i saw them was in Brisbane with of course The Darkness. Been hooked ever since. Seen them 4 times now. Their shows are bloody awesome. Such a fun talented band to see. Such a hard working band too. They definitely deserve massive success.
Yeah, they sound like a lot of awesome bands… but they mostly sound like the Southern River Band and they rock!! Thanks for introducing them to Sydney a few Darkness tours ago, Justin! I’ve caught them many times since, because as you say, they work A LOT! And they’re even better live.
@simonilett998 I don't even listen to BB ..I remember hearing you shook me all night long for the first time and hating it coz it just didn't seem right. Never bought 1 album from the brian years
Totally smitten how good this band is. Justin, you are a man of taste. Now seen them twice and they deserve to be huge. Will be touring Europe soon so I hope enough people bother to check them out as essentially it’s by word of mouth here in Australia as the rock radio stations are not playing them which is a crime. I hope they get to do a festival or a support like AC/DC as they deserve the recognition. I’m spreading the word as much as I can.
Absolute banger. Australia is really pissing out solid and hard bands within the rock and metal sphere. Amyl and the Sniffers, Portal, King Parrot etc.
I am SO stoked that you’ve reacted to SRB at last! The bromance between you and Cal on tour was palpable. Such great mateship and camaraderie. It’s great to see your support of these guys. They deserve to be internationally recognised ❤

Hi Justin, this is Giorgia from Turin, Italy. Since following your channel I've discovered lots of great bands and musicians, so thank you! I have a question for comments day (possibly?). I can only guess that touring as extensively as you've been doing lately must eventually take a toll on all of you, both physically and mentally. Do you ever feel bothered/anxious when after a gig you know you will find fans waiting for you outside the venue for autographs and photos? Or do you look forward to that? (I was at your show in Milan a couple of days ago and you kindly stopped to take a picture with me even though you were so tired! Thanks, it meant a lot!)

I first saw SRB supporting The Darkness in Melbourne and I was blown away. I have since seen them doing their own tour of Australia and holy shit, what fun they are! Rocked out so hard. Definitely worth spending your money on
There's something lovely about seeing someone from your older favourite band say nice things about your newest favourite band. These videos bring me proper joy ❤
Right! More of the good stuff, no rivalry! 🙂
@@MariaFrancescaand also, the 'arse baton'. No one else seems to have mentioned it! 😂
@@ZuzuTheLemon Everybody must have just been busy envisioning it 😀 I mean... that could stop you dead for a few days, at least 😀
@@MariaFrancesca😂
@@ZuzuTheLemon I am voting for that relay running with arse baton exchanges will be included in the Olympics 🙂 The runners will all be rock stars in flared trousers! We all know it would be a success! 🙂
"Blending Stevie Ray Vaughn and AC/DC" , YES! THAT IS THE VIBE! Thank you for sharing.
Awesome of you to showcase these guys again! Loved seeing them at your Sydney concert! Thanks for sharing this brilliant Aussie band to the world! 🎸🎸
Seen these guys live at Mitchel creek music festival.. the rock hard took over the festival and stayed on stage till the power was cut. (They informed me they are not welcomed back they made the festival...) Then again at Caloundra music festival.. They absolutely are true legends. The mixes they play are sensational.
Justin Fucking Hawkins Rides Againnnnnnn!!!!! 🎶🎶🎶🎶
I love what I see of this band. So exciting, bold, dynamic and sleazy rock ‘n roll fun! Thanks, Justin, for sharing them with the world! Bravo!🤘🏻
Cal is a pretty good guitarist and singer for a drummer. Cal is a freak can play every instrument at a super high level and also one of the funniest people in the world. live this band crush every time
I was going to say pretty much the same thing (not only can Cal sing and play guitar, he's a pretty mean little drummer too, although a little un-orthodox with his technique)🤣
I had the privilege to jam with him a couple of times about 12-14yrs ago at his place.
Saw this band last Saturday night and they rocked the hell out of the joint! They are keeping the boogie/hard rock flame alive.
Their live stuff is ass kicking! They carry on the grand tradition of great Aussie rock bands that none of us Americans have ever heard of.
the grand tradition including men at work and inxs?
That intro on snare ,my mind screamed Sweet !
Australia has one of the greatest music cultures on the planet, I swear. So many absolutely phenomenal bands have come outta there and I'm so glad you shared this kickass band :D
Most came from the UK via Oz though.
Yea, The Chats and Amyl and the Sniffers are really good as well. I really like Split Enz as well
I think our community radio scene deserves a shout out on this front, we’re very fortunate in as much as we still have stations that are curated by folks that actually love music, and not plotted by SaaS executives who love nothing but money. A lot of great ‘smaller’ acts can make a living here due to the exposure they get thanks to these ‘smaller’, community sponsored stations.
@@King_Flippy_NipsSplit Enz were my favourite band when I was a kid
Really? Australia?😂
Yes yes yes, this is a PROPER rockband.
This is what Iv'e been wanting to listen to for so many years
Very Airborne, very Jackyl. Not complaining, all bands should sound this good. I will definitely look into this band. Love Aussie rock. love The Chats, The Angels. Kings of the Sun's Full Frontal Attack is a classic album all rock fans should know.
Yeah, they rock fine. You see rock is here to stay.
It’s the “ALBERT’S SOUND” influence. I can hear a lot more than AC-DC. Both Brewster brothers are all over this, for a start. LOVE IT.
The intro totally had a Brewster Bros feel, and the solo was straight out of live The Jack. Best of the best from down under.
Ugh, the music world needs more of THAT right there 😍😍
I love bands that play with this degree of bombast and joyful lack of holding back! They're kicking it.
Great rock! Searched comments to see if anyone else noticed the “Rock-n-Roll Hoochie Coo” Rick Derringer connection. These guys did it proud.
One of the many who heard these guys because of their touring with The Darkness. Absolutely blown away hearing them live. Rock is not dead
This is great, I had no idea that this was a thing anymore, thank God they do it right.
Hi Justin. Thank you for sharing the music of this band. I've never heard of them and I was blown away! Australia has some of my favorite groups: AC DC, Airbourne, Midnight Oil and Wolfmother. And now I can had these guys to the list. Well done mate, cheers!
What about Rose Tattoo?
And Kings of the Sun… and The Screaming Jets….
This is first time I’m hearing of them and they definitely rock ! I’m a fan ! Thanks Justin 🎼🎵❤
First time i saw them was in Brisbane with of course The Darkness. Been hooked ever since. Seen them 4 times now. Their shows are bloody awesome. Such a fun talented band to see. Such a hard working band too. They definitely deserve massive success.
Justin, you absolutely need to hear The Starbenders if you haven't yet. Best Rock band I've seen in years.
That’s for putting me onto this band. I love them!
All the best Australian bands come from Perth Western Australia
Inxs were Perth boys. Farris brothers, hudoo gurus were born out of Perth, tame impala ,psychedelic porn crumpets, eurogliders heaps more
@@ACDZ123 And don't forget, Bon Scott was a Freo boy😁👍🇦🇺
@simonilett998 you bet. Without Bon there would be no AC/DC like we know it 👍
@@ACDZ123 100%. As far as I'm concerned, the Bon years are the only AC/DC years. Before and after Bon are a mere shadow of their greatest years🤘
@simonilett998 I don't even listen to BB ..I remember hearing you shook me all night long for the first time and hating it coz it just didn't seem right.
Amyl and the Sniffers, Portal, King Parrot etc.
this rocks hard man, thanks for this discovery, love you justin.
I am SO stoked that you’ve reacted to SRB at last! The bromance between you and Cal on tour was palpable. Such great mateship and camaraderie. It’s great to see your support of these guys. They deserve to be internationally recognised ❤
Great stuff! Such energy, really rockin. Loved that, thanks.
I spend a shitload of time scouring the Spotifies for music like this and don't always find what I need. Thanks, Mr. Hawkins! You've saved me some serious searching!
Seen them twice and love them. One of my favourite bands. Lucky enough to meet them also. Great bunch of blokes.
So great to see you talk about the Southern River Band, love this band. If anyone has the opportunity to see them live please do. Their set is incredible 😍
wow, coincidently, Justin and I started whistling the tune at the exact same part. haha
Great band I’m glad Justin just introduced me to them , I love it . Very AC/DC Inspired with some 70’s glam rock thrown in which is great , I’ve found a new band. Thanks Justin.
So glad you made this.
Thanks Justin to make me discover this band ! A good mix of Status Quo, Angel City and Thin Lizzy with ACDC sound with their own attitude and groove. Great !!! Love that ! Rock'n'Roll will never die!
Cheers from France !🤘
*The Angels. Yes I know, that's what they were called in other parts of the world. But The Angels is their proper name. One of our greatest ever bands. "Take me away to Marseilles" 🇫🇷
@@SuperRoo_22 You're right ! A long time ago, we made a cover of "Take a long line" with my band 🤘
Holy guacamole !!! Had never heard of these fellas but man oh manskie!! I CANT STOP LISTENING!! Been in my ear holes for hours!! I want merch I want a live show please bless us in the states with your glorious presence!!
There isn't enough long hair in music these days!
The leader has to bring enough for the whole band.
@@natevanek2785 He's doing a good job 🙂
Now that's a f'n Rock and Roll band! I'll check 'em out. Thanks Justin!
I'm Australian and haven't heard of these guys. Wow! It's like going back to the late 70's early 80's rock music.
Get to a concert. stat.
Thank you so much for that very nice discovery
Never heard of them, but love it, i wanna hear more. The thing i love most abour this channel is Justins humility, a rock star that remains one of the people. Hes not threatened by up and comers, no transparent envy, he admires, and promotes others talent, and lives to share it. Justin loves the art of rock n roll and is every bit as much a fan as the rest of us. He remains one of the people...
The spirit of Rock n Roll will never die as long as bands like this exist.
There's a definite Saxon Hungry Years vibe when the blues vibe kicks in
Yeah!!! The Southern River Band!🤘❤
Thk you that’s so fckn awesome , I haven’t heard that freedom since a long time
Aussie Aussie Aussie! Oi! Oi! Oi! F&@k yeah! Thankyou for once more introducing me to new music which I otherwise don’t get the chance to hear about. I’m Aussie but have obviously been living under a rock, I’ve learned about so many great rock bands from your channel, Thankyou for your impeccable service as usual! Brilliant 🙌🏻😊 …And yeah I wouldn’t want to play with Coldplay either 😂
Thank you, Justin, for discovering these incredible guys for me! Another proof that real rock n' roll never dies!
Awesome stuff Justin-I also only saw these guys when they supported you in Oz & was instantly blown away! Not just amazing music but totally infectious & made us bloody proud of Oz rock being well n truly still alive!🥳🤟
🎸⚡️ ⚡️⚡️
Ballroom Blitz vibe to it!
Loved that thank you for bring this to my attention 🤘
Another underrated Aussie band that not many people know about is Airbourne. Fkn fantastic rock band.
I'll be checking out more of these guys tho....they are great 🤟
Thanks for promoting our wonderful aussie artists. Cheers
Hi, Justin! You're the best! I am a singer with classical training and I love singing your " Justin Hawkins Rides Again" theme. It's so cool! And The Darkness Rocks!!! You've saved Rock!!! Cheers from Brazil!
Having grown up during the Golden Age of Aussie Pub Rock, it thrills my ancient rocking heart that real rock is coming back and no one does it better than Australia.
Loved the energy of this song and the fact that this lad can't half play a guitar,he rocks.🎸 What gets me though is that you always seem to put yourself down as a singer and guitar player compared to others. Always remember this lad you have got an amazing voice, are so talented at playing that guitar, wrote numerous songs that kick ass and make me smile. You're fucking awesome as a person and I thank you from the bottom of my heart for your music, which has kept me going and helped me through some dark times lately.♥️♥️
This song is one I’d say is made for playing live. Sure it sounds great on the album but it’s got that punch and groove for moving asses. Love it.
This is like the music of my teens. I can hear AC/DC, Status Quo, Thin Lizzy, Ted Mulry Gang, The Angels, Rose Tattoo all rolled into one. Love it.
💯
Man I need to get to Australia at a time when I can catch both The Southern River Band and The Chats. The Aussies are fucking killing it! Keep it up boys! Love from Detroit!
The opening was almost straight Ballroom Blitz. Very much a sample track of great 70's rock. Be a whole lotta fun to see them live.
Saw them playing at Bridgetown Blues a few years backhand never heard of them before..loved them straight away..and I am an old lady lol...Instantly loved their music and Callum got his Mum up to play with them...they sure do Rock..took me back in time :)
