I went into this record blind, hadn't heard of him or his band. The musicianship, detail, song writing, humour, scope & ambition....this is such a refreshing album.
This seriously is one of the best albums of the year. Geordie Greep takes what he was doing on Black Midi and leans even further into the Jazz Fusion aspects of it. This is a truly batshit album, but such a rewarding one too, you need to listen to it if you haven't
I was listening to "The New Sound" for like the 100th time yesterday and wondered "has Justin heard this yet? What would he think?" And a few hours later, he answered my thought
There's a definite Donald Fagen/Steely Dan vibe in "Holy, Holy" and I think it's purposeful. They share an aesthetic of being both serious about music and flippant an irreverent at the same time, and it works because it's honest. That said, I'm convinced Geordie is is own man, and has a crystal clear vision of what he wants in his music. Great!
Steely Dan's Peg is real simple chords, just with Jazz Modulation, which is the Modes which are just the same 7 notes of the scale but that you can play all of the scales/keys to any of the others. Just have to KNOW the scales to make it work. Black Sabbath can find their way to Phrygian's min2nds, and Lydian sharp 4ths, they just don't know they're using the Modes or that the Modes are what's going to make it sound strong. Elton John does. Brian Wilson finds his way to them, The High Llamas managed to find how Brian Wilson found them. But it's basic stuff. It's just not Rock and you're not gonna find them by trying to Rock, even though Modal Interchange is the Blues that makes Jazz sound like Jazz, letting Duke Ellington bring Jazz to Classical, and George Gershwin bring ... Jazz to Classical. Duke Ellington made Jazz Symphonic. Lalo Shifrin and Quincy Jones, Burt Bacharach, they know the modes. Rogers and Hammerstein TEACH them "Do, Re, Me, Fa, So, La, ti, Do".
@@christeuma Fascinating information. I saw a video where Donald Fagen explained how he used some 4ths and major 7ths to change the flavor of a gospel or blues chord progression into something different, but that's rather far afield from this video, which is fine, so I'd like to emphasize that while I might hear some connection to Steely Dan, that's just my initial reaction as a die hard fan of theirs. What he's doing harmonically is way beyond anything that I can begin to understand technically, and I am enjoying it immensely, and always appreciate something new and different, which this achieves in spades.
I've been waiting for this!!! I was missing black midi then he came out with this gem and I've been obsessed with it since. My album of the year for sure
Absolutely astounding musician. I saw him with Black Midi early last year. The drummer and he were probably two of the most accomplished musicians I've seen for a fucking long time.
Musically it’s great! Lyrically it’s hilarious! It’s almost like a Monty Python bit but it’s actually technically complicated and interesting. (Which Python routines frequently also were) And everyone probably knows about an individual who thinks about themselves like this without irony. I love it!
Love how psyched you are for this one Justin! Now that you’re on a new music spree, Man Man has a really awesome, deep, and varied catalouge. They put out an album this year that rips, sort of Zappa/ Waites but poppier surf rock.
I’d say the guitar playing itself is very Mahavishnu era John McLaughlin. And the Latin Jazz fusion style stuff reminds me of Gato Barbieri. Im sure they were both influences.
10:55 It's The Kinks: Picture book, pictures of your mama Taken by your papa, a long time ago Picture book of people with each other To prove they love each other, a long time ago
Johnny Nash and Neil Diamond tributes at the start of the video mark new musical high points for the JHRA. Well done. Clearly, the loss of Black Midi is a devastating blow for the Windmill pub scene in London, but perhaps Geordie Greep's solo career might fill that void in the London pub rock scene, though it may never trouble the UK top 50 album charts. However, the single "Holy, Holy" has split opinion in the BM fandom, and could possibly prove to be a messy misstep in Greep's solo career.
Tou should do a show about a late Canadian band, the Tragically Hip. Unknown mostly outside of Canada but they had a massive impact on us. Sadly, Their singer Gord Downey died of brain cancer. A great loss.
Elizabeth (The Charismatic Voice) said in one of her videos that you and The Darkness should do a cover of "In the Meantime" by Space Hog. I think that you guys would rock that song.
The chorus sounds like the same chord progression as "I'm Free" by The Who. This is weird and off and the rhythm section IS really fekkin' good. This is buck wild and all over the place like a litter of kittens! Hot damn! Love the lyrics, they're pithy and hilarious. This is why I get a bit peevish when people tell me that nobody makes good music anymore. What a crock o' crap! Danke
And 20 minutes felt like 4 only! 😁 Not one word about his dancing in the video although he tried so very hard on doing unusual, interesting and elegant dance moves... 👀😂 Gripping bass line that sounds familiar! First I thought Rick James, but who knows? 😅🤷♀️
Just watched "Holy holy" live in the studio. It's eccentric, tongue in cheek but is an antidote to the blandness of chart music. It's not technically difficult but has a niche. Think Zappa meets Santana. "The Darkness" in some ways were/are flirting with a unique take on the rock/prog genre.
Love the shout out to A Short Album About Love - an incredible and kinda forgotten album, similar stories about weird lust (not about folk as creepy as the characters Greep draws tho) - well worth a listen
@dddgtsd Brel permeates the album and his performances. It's likely that he got to Brel through Scott Walker (as most english-speakers have), but the inspiration is unquestionably from Brel himself as opposed to the covers
@@rafaeltheraven yeah cos I was thinking Scott Walker but the version of Walker that I hear in this song is Walker when he covers Brel. Agree with you.
00:18😂😂😂 04:30😏😙😏😙😅 12:51 I couldn't have described it better🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 you're the f***ing master at doing song reviews🙌🙌🙌🙌😆❤ The part of reading the lyrics has been so hilarious too😂👏👏👏👏👏
_The New Sound_ is a reflection of modern masculinity, that's my thesis. The character Greep builds throughout the album describes someone who builds an image that's more for other people than himself, his portrayal is a self-assured scumbag but reveals an oddly sweet, sensitive side that's still rather pathetic and lonely, but it's heartfelt at the same time for how honest it is.
Earth, Wind and Fire? George Benson? Yesss.. There's no such thing as 'new', though, unless you're capable of escaping the space time thingy. Everything gets recombined. "Let's Groove" by Earth, Wind & Fire.
Wow. I'm watching one person trying to exist in the conflict between whether another person is adopting a persona or not. And, Geordie Greep (along with all the rest of us, I think) might not always know whether his is a character or not. I don't think we're fixed in place. This is watching two separate psychological moving parts trying to negotiate the reality they share. It's fascinating.
Well,if calypso music was accosted in a bowling alley by some tasty funkadelic bass lines and they had a baby(still in the bowling alley) this is what it sounds like!😜
I went into this record blind, hadn't heard of him or his band. The musicianship, detail, song writing, humour, scope & ambition....this is such a refreshing album.
Same!

This was honestly my song of 2024.
oh hey walter, funny to see you here! same, probvably song of the 2020s so far if i'm honest
Same tbh. Its by far my favorite off the album too, everything about it is perfect, its up there with the greats.
walterooski nation represent!
Finally! Greepers rise up!
Btw the bassline is probably inspired by Earth, Wind & Fire - Let's Groove
It's also reminiscent of The RAH Band's Messages from the Stars.
@@richardpierce1559 Good catch! Its like an amalgamation of the 2
Was literally gonna say the same thing. Brought Let’s Groove to mind straight away!
It is for sure
I saw him live recently at Pitchfork festival and I absolutely loved him. Already got tickets to see him next year. My favourite artist currently.
You are introducing me to so much wonderful new music. Thank you, Justin!!
Please keep spotlighting these lesser known artists. Fantastic!
Watching this blow Justin’s mind is very satisfying - I’ve been waiting for him to cover this one

The first thought that came into my mind
Second half of this song is so beautiful
he owes you a pint Justin never heard of him or Black Midi before but now I'm hooked bonkers brilliant great stuff

The New Sound album is brilliant. Every track commands your attention and musically, it’s expertly done 🔥🔥 one to watch live for sure
obsessed with this tune in a way i haven't been obsessed for a while, outrageous stuff
what an album is love greep a true artist
Earth Wind and Fire, Let’s GROOVE
Yep 👍
I got that immediately. Such a recognizeable bassline
I LOVE GEORDIE GREEP
Absolutely astounding musician. I saw him with Black Midi early last year. The drummer and he were probably two of the most accomplished musicians I've seen for a fucking long time.
Desperation, ambition, striving and strife.
This was so different but amazing, the lyrics were hysterical, nice one 😆
one of the few things this year that I am genuinely impressed with
“Let’s groove tonight “ by Earth wind and fire “. First record I ever bought. Primarily because it has a robot voice at the start.☺️
Earth wind and fire.lets groove is the music
Very original - I love it - I am going to listen to more of him.
The album is wild.
Musically it’s great! Lyrically it’s hilarious! It’s almost like a Monty Python bit but it’s actually technically complicated and interesting. (Which Python routines frequently also were) And everyone probably knows about an individual who thinks about themselves like this without irony. I love it!
Album of the year. No contest.
What an amazing song! Would love to hear this live. Great video too. Off to watch the Big Lebowski now 👀
Loved your song about the smudge , classic ❤😂
Lyrically, it's a bit 'Swiss Toni', cracked me up 😂
Love how psyched you are for this one Justin! Now that you’re on a new music spree, Man Man has a really awesome, deep, and varied catalouge.

That vocal style and melody really gives me the vibe of one of the songs from Jesus Christ Superstar
Live he is incredible… like Zappa , AlDi meola , Mark E Smith , a genius
You should check out the band, Raketkanon, if you're not already aware of them.
I’d say the guitar playing itself is very Mahavishnu era John McLaughlin. And the Latin Jazz fusion style stuff reminds me of Gato Barbieri. Im sure they were both influences.
The New Sound has all the makings of album of the year, Geordie Greep (and the rest of black midi) dont seem to miss
Album of the Year.
Earlier this year I considered myself well and truly Greeped.
11:20 I think 'Let's groove tonight' EW&F is pretty close. Same key too.
Jazzy 💃reminds me of a song Tarantino would pick for one of his movies 👍
10:55 It's The Kinks:
Picture book, pictures of your mama
Taken by your papa, a long time ago
Picture book of people with each other
To prove they love each other, a long time ago
Also Green Day Warning who shamelessly ripped off The Kinks.
Excited about the new Darkness album!
Justin you must try catch him live, truly awe inspiring
this song is even better live as well

I liked it very much!
You should do the live version of "Blues" on Greep's channel.
Tou should do a show about a late Canadian band, the Tragically Hip. Unknown mostly outside of Canada but they had a massive impact on us. Sadly, Their singer Gord Downey died of brain cancer. A great loss.
Just recently discovered them by chance. Awesome band.

That one melody is EWF "Let's Groove"
It's looking like my album of the year.
This track is great, but The Magician is easily the best track of the year
WONDER WOMAN!!!
instant classic

Well. This is completely new to me, Thanks. I don't know what to think, which is nice.
You know you don’t have to stop after every line
Until now my favorite 2024 album, just edging Romance by Fontaines DC. It's a strangely attractive and exciting collection of songs.
It's a i-iimin7b5-V7 progression. Basic Jazz progression but awesome edgy instrumentation, great lyrics and great insanity.

If Boogie Nights had been written by Jacques Brel.
I compared it to Scott Walker but it's def more the Brel written tracks so Brel is definitely more apt.

He talks about it in his interview with Fantano.
Did you get to see Jonathan Hultén supporting The Cult!? He's my new favourite Goth 🖤
Worthy of a Rides Again reaction?
Song of the year
Reminds me of Be Prepared by Scar (Jeremy Irons) in The Lion King
Justin Fucking Hawkins Rides Againnnnnnn 🎶🎶
interesting song... starting with a fast 70s disco-funky style; then the latins percussions 😁
Earth, Wind and Fire? George Benson? Yesss.. There's no such thing as 'new', though, unless you're capable of escaping the space time thingy. Everything gets recombined.
"Let's Groove" by Earth, Wind & Fire.

Truism, yes indeed!
I know you're a big Scott Walker fan, do you get shades of Scott in this song? The storytelling, the theatrical voice. Musically maybe not so much.
"Holy" be an allusion to Ginsberg and the Beats!
I also hear that bass line in The Who "I'm Free" from Tommy
The lyrics are inspired.
That and sweat on the lenses been wearing glasses since 1971
New to me, very cool. Voice reminds me of Feargal Sharkey a bit.
Let's groove by Earth Wind and Fire...that's what it reminds you of
You should tell Rick about this
So funny 😂 today !
It's all a bit Frank Zappa, don't ya fink?
Hey Hawk BTW:)
Please react to The Magician. Its Greep's magnum opus, even in comparison to Holy Holy.
You’ve gotta check out Opus Kink very interesting band and incredible live the front man has charisma for days
It reminds me of The Associates and their ability to skew certain song styles. Nice.
Ok. I just got the SM7B placement relative to the human cutout. 😂😂😂
The bass line reminds me of 'I can't wait" by Nu Shooz
He need to do a reaction to The Magician
This is post rock/Disco Steely Dan
